The 100 Best Places to Eat and Drink in Toronto

The best places to eat and drink in Toronto, according to the experts: Difford's Guide, Michelin Guide, and AAA have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Alo comes out on top.

More Less

Bar Pompette and DaNico hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA close behind.

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. Rank 1. Alo

    French

The chef's counter overlooking the kitchen is the seat to book at this sleek, third-floor tasting menu restaurant from Patrick Kriss. Six or ten courses move between European and Asian sensibilities without announcing the pivot each time. The bar takes walk-ins and treats them accordingly. A Michelin star sits on the shelf. Somehow the room, all burgundy and diffused light, never tips into solemnity.

  2. Rank 1. Bar Pompette

    French Cocktail Bar

Bentwood chairs, a marble bar, and jazz on Sundays give this College Street cocktail bar the plausible deniability of a Parisian café. The drinks are where things get interesting: curry leaf and rum, cognac stirred with masala chai, combinations that sound like a dare and drink like they were inevitable. North America's 50 Best Bars places it at number eight, and the hospitality matches the ambition. The garden patio fills up fast.

  3. Rank 1. DaNico

    Italian

The dining room occupies a former bank, and the high ceilings and long linen tablecloths suggest the space hasn't entirely forgotten its past grandeur. This is fine dining Italian, with a tasting menu or prix fixe built around Ontario produce and serious technique. Irreverent artwork keeps the mood from tipping into solemnity. The wine list leans deep Italian with growing Ontario representation. DaNico holds a Michelin star and placed third on 50 Top Italy's global list.

  4. Rank 1. Quetzal

    Mexican

A ten-metre open fire pit runs the length of this sleek College Street Mexican restaurant, and nearly every dish on the menu answers to it. The undulating ceiling, designed to echo the tarp-covered stalls of Mexican markets, sets the mood before the food does. Tortillas are pressed to order from heirloom corn nixtamalized in-house, and the mezcal and tequila cocktail program keeps pace with the kitchen. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best Restaurants.

  5. The four-seat chef's counter at the back is the seat everyone wants, close enough to watch Eric Chong's kitchen turn a dim sum memory or a single oyster into something quietly astonishing. This is a Michelin-starred fine dining room on Colborne Street doing a modern Asian tasting menu, gold-leaf finishes and strategic low light included. The crowd came dressed for it. Cocktails downstairs carry their own ambition before the ten courses begin.

  6. Thirty-eight floors above Toronto Harbour, this fine-dining room does Modern Italian without the baroque excess, letting clean Mediterranean technique do the work. The tasting menu is the move, with pasta given the same seriousness as anything else on the plate. A Michelin star and a spot on the 50 Top Italy world list follow from somewhere, and the room knows it, carrying itself with a professionalism that feels earned rather than performed.

  7. Rank 5. Edulis

    Spanish Mediterranean

The menu isn't printed, because by the time you sit down it's already changed. Edulis is a tiny tasting-menu restaurant behind a candy-striped awning on Niagara Street, run by a husband-and-wife team whose culinary frame of reference is the old Michelin-starred dining rooms of Spain and France, framed posters of which line the walls. Phones away, table yours for the night. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best.

  8. Rank 5. Linny’s

    Steakhouse

Steaks seared under an overfired broiler, then brushed with pastrami tallow butter: that's the move at Linny's, David Schwartz's fine-dining Jewish American steakhouse on Ossington. The mid-century dining room runs to white linen, golden light, and banquettes comfortable enough to make you order another round. The bar's eight seats have their own scene, with cocktails that fold deli ingredients into the classics in ways that are more clever than they sound.

  9. Rank 9. Library Bar

    Cocktail Bar

Tableside martinis have been a feature of this jewel-toned, Art Deco cocktail bar inside the Fairmont Royal York for longer than most regulars have been alive. The cocktail menu takes its plot points from Michael Ondaatje's Toronto novel "In the Skin of a Lion," so drinks arrive with actual literary backstory, which is either charming or a lot, depending on your mood. North America's 50 Best Bars ranked it nineteenth on the 2026 list.

  10. Rank 9. Mhel

    Korean-Japanese

The name means "anchovy" in a Jeju dialect, and a little fish decal above the door is the only signage you'll notice. Inside this 30-seat Korean-Japanese small plates spot on a quiet Bloor West residential street, the menu rotates daily around seasonal Ontario produce and carefully sourced imports, with a sake list doing most of the heavy lifting on drinks. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on North America's 50 Best.

  11. Rank 9. Restaurant 20 Victoria

    Contemporary Mexican

The open kitchen anchors this 24-seat contemporary Mexican tasting menu restaurant in the financial district, where cooks often carry their own plates to the table. The chef, Rafa Covarrubias, brought his team over from a Michelin-starred Oakville room to focus entirely on one menu, and the flavors here are vivid and precise in a way that a 70-seat operation rarely allows. The room is calm and dimly lit, the service warm without fuss.

  12. Rank 12. KAPPO SATO

    Japanese

The counter wraps the open kitchen, and the room is in constant motion, a young team pivoting between courses while Chef Takeshi Sato moves through it all with the calm of someone who has nothing to prove. This is a Japanese kappo omakase, freestyle and personal, with most ingredients flown in from Japan. It holds a Michelin star, and the dashi alone explains a good portion of why.

  13. Candlelight bouncing off cream walls and blond-oak tables sets the tone at Rob Rossi's luxe Italian restaurant, which holds a Michelin star and zeroes in on the seafood-forward cooking of Liguria rather than the usual Italian greatest-hits tour. The staff runs things with a quiet confidence that's either very reassuring or slightly unnerving, depending on your mood. A deep Italian wine list and a serious cocktail program mean there's no weak link in the evening.

  14. Eight courses from an open kitchen in a room that manages to feel welcoming rather than ceremonial. This is a contemporary tasting-menu restaurant in Yorkville, where the chef, an Alo alumnus, keeps plates to three or four ingredients and lets them do the talking. The wine list is small and well-chosen. A Michelin star. Bar seats offer à la carte for anyone who finds the full commitment a bit much on a Tuesday.

  15. A 200-year-old hinoki counter anchors this intimate omakase room on Avenue Road, where Chef Masaki Saito flies his fish exclusively from Japan and keeps the atmosphere warm enough that laughter genuinely competes with reverence. The room itself is a statement, all traditional woodwork and quiet ceremony, and the price is serious. It holds a Michelin star. Come prepared to surrender the evening and let the chef decide everything.

  16. Fifty-four floors up in the TD Bank Tower, the city spreads out below you like a very expensive map. Canoe is a long-running fine-dining institution where lunch belongs to Bay Street and dinner slows to something more ambitious, the kitchen turning out contemporary Canadian cooking with serious technique. The tarte au sucre has become something of a fixture on the dessert menu, and the room knows how to move a table along or let it breathe.

  17. Rank 16. Civil Works

    Cocktail Bar

The cocktail menu arrives as a fabric-swatch book, sourced from a textile shop up the street, which tells you exactly the kind of cocktail bar this is. Each drink comes tethered to a chapter of Toronto history, wars and labour movements and immigration woven into the tasting notes. It lands on North America's 50 Best Bars list, and the ambition never crowds out the fun: they also do craft-cocktail Jell-O shots, which is the right call.

  18. Follow the smell of barbecue down an alley stacked with firewood and you'll find the front door. Inside, Matty Matheson's steakhouse is all maple slats, a domed ceiling, and salmon-pink booths, which sounds like a lot until you're sitting in it. The menu moves from Sicilian crudo and tartares through big dry-aged cuts cooked on the grill, with vegetable sides that quietly refuse to be an afterthought. Krug by the glass, if you're in the mood.

  19. Down a Kensington Market hallway that looks like it leads nowhere, a door opens onto a loud, packed room doing serious Sichuan-inflected Chinese cooking. Chili oil, cumin smoke, and the char on silver needle noodles do most of the talking. The Hong Kong French toast with black sesame jam and oolong condensed milk is the kind of dessert that makes you forget you had a plan. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  20. Tucked behind Hong Shing on Dundas, Yan is a micro-restaurant running three nights a week for 28 guests at a time. Chef Eva Chin strikes a gong before each course, then narrates the food with warmth and disarming candour, connecting Cantonese tradition, Singaporean memory, and Hawai'ian upbringing into what she calls neo-Chinese cooking. The monthly tasting menu ends with guests leaving clutching bags of leftovers, which tells you something about the spirit of the host.

  21. Rank 21. Conejo Negro

    Caribbean

The backyard patio at this Caribbean-Creole-Latin restaurant on College Street has wood planks, warm lighting, and enough greenery to make you forget there's a city out there. Inside, the room is a cozy nook built for sharing plates and lingering. The menu moves through fried chicken with smoked hot honey and braised beef over cheddar grits without losing momentum. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and it earned a finalist nod from Air Canada's Best New Restaurants list.

  22. Rank 21. Giulietta

    Italian

The pizza comes out charred and puffy, the kind that makes you rethink your original plan to order pasta instead. Giulietta is a classic Italian restaurant on College Street that somehow manages to feel both polished and genuinely neighbourhood, the sort of room where the team treats first-timers like regulars they just hadn't met yet. The Michelin Guide lists it, and Canada's 100 Best has it in the top 100.

  24. Rank 21. SAMMARCO

    Italian Steakhouse

Oxblood leather banquettes, marble everywhere, and a cocktail trolley that arrives tableside bearing elaborate Martinis: Sammarco is Toronto's Italian steakhouse at full volume. The five Ontario dry-aged cuts are the backbone, sourced from Cumbrae's and treated simply, but the menu wanders into grilled sweetbreads and snow crab risotto for those who came for more than beef. The wine list runs long and expensive. Dress accordingly.

  25. The city skyline arrives like a third course at this long-running fine dining room tucked into the South Hill neighbourhood. Chef Keith Froggett has kept the kitchen classically French for decades, which means foie gras terrine and rabbit loin without apology or quotation marks. The coconut cream pie has its own fan club among regulars who have been making the reservation since before you were born.

  26. Rank 21. Suite 115

    Cocktail Bar

The password is posted on the door, which is either charming or cheating depending on how much you needed the walk. Inside this cocktail speakeasy on College Street, warm amber tones and a bar stocked long enough to require a second look set the scene. The team runs food-forward cocktails, occasionally served with homemade lollipops or mango rice cake, which raises fewer eyebrows than it should. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars.

  27. Rank 21. Takja BBQ House

    Korean Barbecue

The ssämjang is fermented in-house, which is either a signal that the kitchen takes Korean barbecue seriously or that it has too much time on its hands, probably both. This upscale Korean BBQ spot on College Street dry-ages an international roster of proteins and has servers manage the grill so you don't have to. The banchan rotates with the seasons, and the cocktail list leans Korean. Canada's 100 Best landed it at number 46.

  28. Rank 28. Bar Prima

    Italian

  29. Rank 28. Civil Liberties

    Cocktail Bar

There's no menu at this Bloor West cocktail bar, which is either the most liberating or the most anxiety-inducing news you'll get all evening. The bartenders build something custom around what you're after, or they'll walk you through the house-made liqueurs until the right one finds you. The room shifts from low-key spirits conversation to full party depending on the hour, so arrive accordingly.

  30. Rank 28. Dreyfus

    French

The front door is frosted top to bottom, the curtains are drawn, and there's no signage to speak of, which is a choice for a French bistro on Harbord. Inside, the narrow townhouse room runs on dim lighting and Italo-disco, and the cooking is smart, seasonal, and indulgent in the way that only a chef with Joe Beef on his résumé can pull off. Pommes dauphines are a fixture; everything else shifts with the microseason. Listed in Canada's 100 Best and the Michelin Guide.

  31. Rank 28. Mother

    Cocktail Bar

Barrel-aged Negronis rest along a minimalist backbar while the kitchen, so to speak, runs on kombucha, lacto-ferments, and house-brewed potions. Mother is a fermentation-focused cocktail bar on Queen West where the drinks lean more mad-scientist than mixologist, in a good way. The chiaroscuro lighting keeps things moody and polished. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars, which tracks for a room this quietly serious about what's in the glass.

  32. Rank 33. Aburi Hana

    Kyō-Kaiseki Japanese

Handmade Arita pottery lands on the table before the food does, and that sets the tone for this Michelin-starred Kyō-kaiseki room tucked below Yorkville. The chef's multi-course menu is intricate and personal, each dish built from layered techniques rather than straightforward ingredients. The minimalist room keeps things quiet so the plates can do the talking, which, given the cooking, turns out to be a reasonable arrangement.

  33. Rank 33. Bar Mordecai

    Cocktail Bar

The soft-serve ice cream comes spiked, which tells you something about how Bar Mordecai runs its cocktail program. This lively Dundas West bar spans a hotel-lobby-feeling main floor and a karaoke basement, with an events calendar that fits bachata classes, tarot readings, and drag-hosted bingo into the same week. The fizzy wine list runs from Champagne to sparkling sake to non-alc. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars.

  35. A tasting menu restaurant tucked into a small house on Clinton Street, where the kitchen channels years spent in Majorca and Venice into Spanish and Venetian cooking that leans heavily on seafood. The wine list chases obscure regions with evident purpose, and Sunday service slows down for family-style paella rounds. A spot on Canada's 100 Best keeps the room full of people who booked weeks ago and are pleased with themselves for doing so.

  36. Rank 33. Cocktail Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The worn white cabinets behind the bar hold the spirits like a well-organized medicine cabinet, which feels right for a cocktail bar that started as somewhere to wait for a table across the street and quietly became a destination of its own. Up a short flight of stairs on Dundas West, the room is tiny, warm in winter, breezy in summer, and usually full of people who knew exactly where they were going.

  37. Rank 33. Cry Baby Gallery

    Cocktail Bar

A whitewashed-brick gallery on Dundas West that turns into a cocktail bar once you push past the dark curtain at the back. The curved bar glows, curated art lines the walls, and the menu reads like a love letter to Toronto, organized like a Yellow Pages from another dimension. The drinks are serious enough that combinations which look alarming on paper arrive exactly as they should. North America's 50 Best Bars ranked it 69th in 2026.

  38. The house bread changes with whatever the chef has on hand, garlic scapes one week, sundried tomatoes the next, and it arrives crusty and worth slowing down for. FK is a neighborhood restaurant with a sun-filled room that reads more tearoom than bistro, and a market-driven menu that follows the season without making a fuss about it. Service moves at its own pace, but the kitchen's unhurried honesty tends to make that forgivable.

  40. Rank 33. Harbour 60

    Steakhouse

  41. A wrap-around terrace and sliding patio doors make this fine dining room in downtown Oakville feel more like a smart summer evening than a white-tablecloth ordeal. The menu reads straightforward, beef tartare, oysters, pasta, but the kitchen turns each into something careful and considered. A Michelin star hangs over the whole thing, and the optional tasting menu is where the chef's ambitions come through most clearly.

    The awards

  42. A kaiseki restaurant tucked inside the Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre, reached through corridors that feel less like a hallway and more like a border crossing. Guests eat in fully private rooms, so the vibe is intimate rather than performative. The seasonal menu follows traditional kaiseki form with real conviction, and the sake list gets the same care as the food. It holds a Michelin star.

    The awards

  43. Rank 33. MIMI Chinese

    Regional Chinese

Lipstick-red banquettes and white tablecloths in Yorkville signal a Chinese restaurant with more polish than your usual regional spot. MIMI is the fancier sibling in its family of restaurants, leaning into refined technique and good ingredients rather than homestyle comfort. The menu moves across regional Chinese classics, and the four-foot belt noodles have a way of commanding the table. Groups do well here; portions are built for sharing.

  44. Rank 33. Shoushin

    Edomae Sushi

The hinoki counter running the length of the room sets the tone before anyone's poured water. This is Edomae omakase, so settle in and let the chef lead, whether that's the shorter introduction menu or the longer, more personal progression. The nigiri moves from delicate silvery kohada up through richer cuts in a deliberate arc. The rice blend is left uncolored, its acidity calibrated to the fish. A Michelin star for those keeping score.

  45. Rank 33. Simpl Things

    Cocktail Bar

A pastel-washed Parkdale cocktail bar where the martinis come topped with a little caviar and the daiquiris are built around caramelized banana. The cocktail menu tends toward the nostalgic and playful, but there's enough craft underneath to keep things interesting. Come evening, the kitchen pivots to Asian comfort food, udon carbonara and stuffed bāo among them. Half-pours served in vintage glassware solve the problem of wanting everything.

  46. A seven-course tasting menu that shifts with the season and the whims of local farmers makes Actinolite one of those fine-dining rooms where you genuinely don't know what's coming until it lands. The chef grew up foraging and hunting in rural Ontario, and that instinct runs through the cooking, which has a Nordic quietness to it. The garden out back supplies herbs in summer. Chefs often bring the plates out themselves, which either charms you or makes you feel mildly observed.

Exposed brick and mid-century furniture bathed in warm amber light make this Ossington cocktail bar feel like someone's very cool living room, if that someone also happened to know a lot about Japanese whisky. The drinks program leans Japanese-inspired, the zero-proof options are taken as seriously as everything else, and the food is good enough that you'll order more than you planned. 49. The door says printing shop; the door is lying. Past a psychedelic mirrored hallway, this speakeasy opens into red velvet banquettes and warm rods of light, somewhere between a 1970s supper club and a set from a film that hasn't been made yet. The basement runs centrifuges and rotary evaporators, which is not how most bars do it, and the cocktail menu makes that fairly obvious.

  52. Rank 52. N.L. Ginzburg

    Italo-Jewish Italian

Tagliatelle gets rolled fresh daily, and the menu drifts between English and Italian, but N.L. Ginzburg is doing something more specific than a trattoria. Named after anti-fascist Italian intellectuals, this College Street spot threads Italo-Jewish culinary history through hyper-seasonal Canadian ingredients: a liver toast that nods to both Tuscan fegatini and Jewish chopped liver, rugelach at dessert. Italian movie posters and terrazzo floors do the decorating.

The pasta shop itself opens for lunch only, for a few hours, with two or so pasta dishes on offer that day and not much else. Maven is a warm, sunlit Polish-Jewish restaurant on Harbord where chef Shauna Godfrey, a Momofuku Kōjin alum, cooks from her grandmother's legacy and her own technique in equal measure. The Pickletini arrives briny and composed, and the chicken schnitzel is brined, fried, and completely serious about itself.

  61. Dim sum that never stayed in its lane sits at the center of this fusion restaurant on Spadina, where MasterChef Canada winner Eric Chong and his mentor Alvin Leung run a menu that pulls from French, Korean, and Chinese kitchens in the same breath. Bao stuffed with kimchi and galbi, flaky pastry hiding foie gras, butter-poached lobster over dashi, the whole thing feels like a cooking competition that nobody stopped. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  62. Rank 59. XXX

    Cocktail Bar

Twenty seats below a Dutch-Indo restaurant, this subterranean speakeasy is decorated with 1970s Nederlandse kitsch, Funko Pop dolls, and enough knick-knacks to make a flea market blush. The cocktails lean toward the unexpected, carrot-cake-infused whisky being the kind of thing that shows up without apology. The barman runs the room with a reputation for bespoke pours and a soft spot for single malts. Canada's 100 Best ranks it among the country's top bars.

  63. Rank 65. Bar Raval

    Spanish

The sinuous cocoon of curved South African mahogany is the first thing you clock, and it's enough to make you forget you're on College Street. Bar Raval is a pintxos bar and all-day Spanish hangout with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, pouring daytime cava, serious vermouth, and sharp cocktails from a tight modern program. The food runs from conservas to late-night snacks, and the room is designed to make leaving feel like a personal failure.

  64. Rank 65. BarChef

    Modern Cocktail Bar

A single word above a heavy black door on Queen West is all the signposting BarChef bothers with. Inside, brick walls, dark wood, and dimmed lighting pull every eye toward the bar, which is exactly where Frankie Solarik wants you. The specialty is what the menu calls modernist cocktails, and the theatrical production values are not incidental to the drink. Aged bottled cocktails and punch bowls round out a list that takes itself seriously, and somehow gets away with it.

  65. Rank 65. Black Dice Cafe

    Japanese Coffee Shop

A vintage pinball machine throws just enough light to appreciate the chromium-and-formica bar stools at this Japanese rockabilly cocktail bar on Dundas West. Sake cocktails, Sapporo pints, and whisky highballs are the move, with Asahi served at a temperature the bar takes personally. The owner fronts a rockabilly band around town, which explains why the ephemera on the walls feels curated rather than accumulated.

  67. Hand-folded dumplings that change with the seasons set the tone at DaiLo, Nick Liu's New Asian-French restaurant on College Street. The menu is built around sharing, with dishes that are generous, boldly seasoned, and clearly personal. Whole fried trout with nam jim and Hainanese chicken with black truffle under the skin suggest the kitchen's register. The cocktails are taken seriously, and the wines are well-chosen. Come with people you like feeding.

  69. Rank 65. The Ace

    American

A slim vintage diner on Roncesvalles that's been around forever, The Ace holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for doing brunch better than most restaurants do dinner. The sourdough hits the griddle in the morning and the smell makes the lineup feel shorter than it is. The French toast, a thick brioche square with caramelized pears and whipped ricotta, is the kind of thing that makes people rearrange their Sundays.

  70. The "no cutlery" rule wasn't an accident, it was the whole point. 416 Snack Bar is a candlelit neighborhood bar on Bathurst where the industry crowd figured things out fast and never really left. There's no cocktail list to speak of, just a well-stocked bar happy to make the drinks people kept asking for. Ranked among Canada's 100 Best Bars, it lands its vibe by knowing exactly what it is and quietly ignoring everything it isn't.

  71. Rank 74. 915 Dupont

    Japanese

Vintage amps and speakers from the '70s and '80s line the walls of this Japanese kissaten-style bar on Dupont, which pulls double duty as a daytime café before DJs take over at dusk. The cocktail list leans on yuzu, oolong, sake, and Japanese teas, with signatures drawn from famous albums. Rice paper Noguchi lamps and koinobori streamers hang overhead, and the mid-century furniture makes clear that nobody here is in a hurry to leave.

  72. Rank 74. Alma

    Chinese

Red lanterns and a ceramic lucky cat set the tone, but scallion bao filled with stracciatella cheese does the explaining. This tiny Bloordale Village restaurant lands a Michelin Bib Gourmand for cooking that defies easy labeling, pairing pan-fried radish cakes and pork wonton noodles with miso cheesecake and Parmesan tapioca fritters. Servers pour natural wines throughout, cheerfully, as if the bottle might run out.

  73. Rank 74. Aloette

    Diner

Patrick Kriss runs the tasting-menu temple ALO one floor up, and Aloette is what he does when he loosens his collar. The room is barely wider than a train car, the menu reads like a diner, and the cheddar brioche arrives complimentary before you've even decided anything. Everyone orders the burger; everyone ends with the lemon meringue pie, which is tall enough to cause a scene. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  74. Heirloom corn from Mexico, pressed and griddled into tortillas daily, is the entire argument for this taco shop on Adelaide. The room is white kitchen tile and worn wood, the menu is short, and everything arrives fast and hot before the meal is suddenly, almost rudely, over. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place you're already planning to revisit before you've finished chewing.

  75. The Martini "My Way" lets you spec your gin or vodka, then choose from olives, twists, caper berries, cocktail onions, or the ominously listed "Monster Munch," for which the menu offers only: Trust Us. This Junction cocktail bar and cafe runs all day, moving from breakfast sandwiches in the morning to caviar and chips after dark, with a deep natural wine cellar and a serious ice program keeping the evening crowd honest. It landed at number 25 on Canada's Best Bars list.

  76. Rank 74. Gift Shop

    Cocktail Bar

The entrance is through a barbershop on Ossington, which should tell you everything about the vibe before you order a thing. Gift Shop is a compact cocktail bar that runs on classic inspiration, with originals built from combinations that have no business working as well as they do. The Lycheese Martini, which is exactly what it sounds like, rehabilitates the lychee martini with Parmigiano Reggiano. Ranked on Canada's 100 Best Bars list.

  77. Reclaimed wood panels and colorful murals set the tone at this Indian street food spot on a busy stretch of Bayview, where the menu roams across regions rather than settling into one corner of the subcontinent. Chaats arrive lashed in chutney, thalis land as genuinely oversized platters, and the deep-fried cauliflower in sweet chili glaze has its own following. Servers talk you down from over-ordering, which is kind of them. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  78. Rank 74. Jacobs & Co

    Steakhouse

Aged white cheddar popovers land on your table minutes after you sit down, and coffee cake muffins follow you home. That's the bookend philosophy at this sleek, upscale steakhouse in CIBC Square, where the real business is a dry-ageing programme serious enough to earn a spot on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list. Cuts come from Canada, Japan, Australia, and beyond, and the Burgundy-heavy wine list is ready to make any of them expensive.

  79. The long counter and vintage wallpaper say diner; the cocktail list politely disagrees. This College Street bar leans into the greasy-spoon aesthetic while the kitchen sends out cod with Osetra caviar and the bartenders fold Szechuan peppercorn into a White Negroni. Cold beers are always an option, of course. Regulars fill the stools early and stay a while, which tracks for a place that ranked on Canada's 100 Best Bars.

  81. Frankie Solarik's follow-up to BarChef trades smoke machines for herb jars, mortar and pestle, and a chemist's storefront you walk through to reach the bar. The cocktail menu on West Queen West reads like a compendium of house-made bitters, hydrosols, and foraged botanicals, with drinks built to order from vintage apothecary vessels. The showmanship didn't go anywhere, though, and neither did the '90s hip-hop.

  82. Eight seats tucked at the back of the main room, twice nightly, all ingredients flown in from Japan. Sushi Yūgen is a kaiseki-influenced omakase counter where the chef builds around 18 courses and occasionally lands something like okoze, the devil scorpionfish, which is either thrilling or alarming depending on your disposition. The wine list leans toward white Burgundy, and the Japanese whisky selection includes bottles that don't surface anywhere else in the country.

  83. Rank 74. Sweaty Betty's

    Cocktail Bar

Red lights, mismatched furniture, and a name that does not promise elegance: Sweaty Betty's is an anarchic dive bar on Ossington that predates the neighborhood's cool-kid era by a solid stretch. It reads like a stumble-in-at-last-call situation, which is exactly the cover it's working. The cocktails are made with care, classics alongside house originals, most under eighteen dollars, plus a solid beer list for anyone keeping it simple.

  85. Jen Agg's Kensington Market restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tells you something about the short, shape-shifting menu: it changes often, leans on raw bar, house-made pasta, and whatever the kitchen feels like doing, and it overdelivers quietly. The room is loud and good-looking, the wine list is serious, and the crowd arrives dressed like they knew about this street before you did. Cash in your pocket optional; attitude is the currency here.

  86. Rank 91. Bar Goa

    Indian

The appam arrives loaded with fresh white crab meat, which sets the tone for what Bar Goa is doing: a Goan Indian cocktail bar on Toronto Street that takes the food as seriously as the drinks. The menu leans toward Goa's coastal cooking but wanders happily into Punjabi territory too, and the kitchen has a light enough touch to pull off the occasional whimsical plate without losing the plot. A seven-course tasting menu is available for the committed.

  88. A red brick building on Queen East houses this upscale contemporary bistro, where the room mixes industrial bones with enough warmth that the patio fills up the moment the weather cooperates. The chef composes tasting menus of five, seven, or ten courses on the fly, which is either reassuring or terrifying depending on your temperament. Half-pour cocktails and small wine pours keep things measured for anyone pacing themselves.

  94. The carrot plate arrives topped with bay leaf ice cream over melted brie, and the menu doesn't apologize for it. This creative neighbourhood restaurant on Queen East has a whimsical, eclectic room and dishes that quietly wink at other spots around town. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
