  1. Rank 2073. Le Presbytère

    Brasserie

A converted presbytery with red-brick walls and a kitchen garden that feeds the menu the same morning it's picked. This is a modern French restaurant where the chef draws on time in serious kitchens to produce food that feels rooted in the surrounding countryside rather than showing off about it. The dining room keeps things simple, letting the plates do the talking, and the garden terrace in season makes the drive out to Lecelles feel entirely logical.

A young chef running his own small restaurant in the Gard countryside, cooking everything from scratch, including the sauces and ice creams, and changing the lunch menu every week to follow the markets. The more ambitious monthly menu shows where he trained, in kitchens that took both technique and seasons seriously. The room is modest; the cooking has ambitions that go well beyond the postcode.

  12. A small bridge over the Massane river leads to this regional restaurant in a stone-and-brick building on the edge of town, where the menu runs on Mediterranean fish, locally caught anchovies, and citrus from nearby groves. The cooking is rooted in Catalan tradition, with contemporary touches that stop short of fuss. Order the anchovies and you'll understand why this corner of Occitania takes them so seriously.

  13. Rank 2073. Le Relais de Saint Ser

    Provençal Mediterranean

The terrace faces the same ridge of Sainte-Victoire that Cézanne painted obsessively, which either means the view is extraordinary or it comes with a lot of artistic baggage, likely both. This is a renovated Provençal farmhouse turned modern restaurant, where the chef, a Paris fine-dining veteran, ages cuts of beef on site and plates the surrounding terroir with evident care. Lunch on the shaded terrace, with the valley below, is a strong argument for a long afternoon in Provence.

    The awards

  14. Rank 2073. Le Relais de Saulx

    Modern French

White-washed rafters and orange bench seating set the tone at this rustic restaurant a short walk from the Hospices de Beaune. The chef, who came up through a respected Paris kitchen, keeps the cooking seasonal and unfussy, letting market ingredients do the talking. The wine list leans heavily Burgundian, with a good showing of organic and biodynamic bottles for the terroir-curious.

An old stone house on the edge of town, the kind where the flagstone floors have been worn smooth by centuries of good dinners. This is a classic French restaurant with a seasonal menu rooted in the surrounding region, free-range poultry from Ain, foraged mushrooms, and tarts that hit the right balance of sharp and sweet. On warm evenings, the terrace opens onto the garden. Guestrooms are available if the drive back feels less appealing than another glass of wine.

  20. A modern restaurant steps from Annecy's centre, where the chef cut his teeth in Michelin-starred kitchens before going solo. The light-filled room leans heavily on local produce, and the kitchen turns it out with genuine care. A deli and wine shop share the space, with tapas available in the evening, which makes this one of those rare spots where a quick stop can quietly turn into a longer one.

  21. An old stone house that glows blue at night, with a courtyard terrace that earns its keep for a long summer dinner. This is a fine dining restaurant in a small market town near Roanne, where the chef builds modern French plates that put vegetables front and center, presented with some care. The cheese trolley is the kind that slows everything down, pleasantly. His partner runs the floor with the ease of someone who actually wants you there.

Exposed stone and brick walls frame a snug dining room in the Rothéneuf corner of Saint-Malo, where the chef runs a set daily menu with no choices to agonize over. The cooking is confident and unfussy, the kind that makes a poached egg feel like a considered decision. A modern bistro doing one thing at a time and doing it cleanly, with a terrace when the Breton weather cooperates.

  28. A winding mountain road through the Bauges leads to this country inn, where the dining room is all warm wood and valley views wide enough to distract you mid-bite. The chef keeps the menu close to the land, leaning vegetable-forward while pulling in lake fish and local lamb. Surprise tasting menus mean you hand over the wheel entirely, which is either liberating or alarming depending on your relationship with control.

A chef who came up under Éric Guérin at La Mare aux Oiseaux returned to his hometown on the Atlantic coast and quietly took over his parents' brasserie. The room is stripped-back and light-filled, and the cooking is creative without making you work for it, market-driven plates that feel at home somewhere this small. His wife runs the floor with the kind of unhurried attentiveness that most restaurants promise and few deliver.

  33. Rank 2073. Le Saint-Martial

    Modern French

A modest dining room in a quiet Black Périgord village, Le Saint-Martial has been serving modern French cooking with deep regional roots for ages. The chef pairs seasonal produce with punchy, well-reduced sauces and quietly unexpected combinations, the kind of place where sautéed snails feel completely inevitable. An extensive wine cellar and a genuinely warm reception round things out.

    Basque

The terrace faces the right direction, the decor leans into a confident 1970s retro look, and the kitchen leans into the Basque pantry: local trout, hake from Ciboure, cooperative-raised Basque meat. This is a relaxed modern restaurant where the cooking runs on seasonal produce and slow braises, the kind of place where the food is more considered than the room suggests.

  39. A converted mill overlooking the Somme Valley, this is a rural auberge where the chef runs a surprise tasting menu built entirely around local producers and independent fishermen he knows by name. The cooking is unfussy in the best sense, flavors clear and unhurried, the kind of meal that makes you realize simplicity is a skill. The wine cellar runs to over 300 bottles, and the terrace earns its reputation on a good day.

A bistro tucked into the old town with butter-yellow walls and light wood, the kind of room that makes you want to linger. The chef couple behind Le Seize runs a set menu built around herbs and flowers from their kitchen garden, so the cooking lands somewhere between Provençal and quietly personal. A small regional wine list keeps things local. Upstairs handles groups when the occasion calls for it.

  44. Rank 2073. Le Sénéchal

    Modern French

A half-timbered restaurant tucked into an arcaded medieval square in a very remote corner of the Aveyron, which is itself a very remote corner of France. The current family, originally from Normandy, took over from a long-standing predecessor and kept the focus on serious local ingredients, including Vieux Rodez cheese, the region's answer to Parmesan. A handful of guestrooms upstairs means you don't have to navigate dark country roads afterward.

  46. The facade still looks like it belongs to the spa-town glory days, and inside Le Sens Unique leans into that, pairing a wine bar and a shaded rear terrace with cooking that stays grounded, bistro-style with a seasonal nudge toward something a little finer. The chef has a habit of leaving the kitchen to check in on the room, which gives the whole thing an easy, neighborhood-restaurant energy that the polished surroundings don't usually promise.

  50. Rank 2073. Le Serghi

    Traditional French

A terrace on the old port of Saint-Martin-de-Ré is what draws you in, but Philippe Tredgeu, who ran Parisian bistros before making the island move, is the reason to stay. This is a proper sit-down restaurant with a decidedly Parisian sensibility, built around seasonal ingredients and the kind of indulgent, classical recipes that feel slightly rebellious on a sleepy Atlantic island. One of the few spots here that keeps the lights on year-round.

  51. Rank 2073. Le Servan

    Modern French

The period frescoes on the walls feel slightly at odds with the cooking, which is sharp, French-based, and quietly inflected with Southeast Asian heat. This Oberkampf bistro is run by two Filipino-born sisters, one of whom trained under Alain Passard and Pascal Barbot before bringing that pedigree somewhere more relaxed. The sauces are the thing: complex, precise, and never quite what you expect. Book ahead or simply don't go.

    Sardinian

A Sardinian transplant in a Provençal beach town, this compact modern restaurant in the middle of Bandol plays it straight: the décor, the ingredients, and the cooking all point south toward the island. The menu changes monthly, pulling in local seafood alongside Sardinian staples, and the wine list keeps mostly to Italian and regional bottles. The front of house runs with the kind of warmth that makes a short menu feel like a long evening.

The name nods to the chef's great-grandmother and to the sonnet, which explains the fourteen-course tasting menu shaped like a poem. This intimate modern restaurant near Place de Jaude is run by a couple who built the recycled-material decor themselves, bake their own bread, and churn their own ice cream. The cooking draws on Auvergne terroir and family memory, which sounds precious until you taste how grounded it is.

  60. Rank 2073. Le Sourire

    Modern French

A Japanese chef cooking pâté en croûte and duck pithiviers with more conviction than most French chefs can muster sets the tone at this fine dining room in La Doutre. The menu reads like a love letter to classical French cooking, with the occasional quiet aside, foie gras marinated in sake, beef over binchotan, that remind you who's actually in the kitchen. Evenings lean more ambitious, but the warm room is a constant.

The kitchen does contemporary French fine dining, the kind of menu that moves through courses with quiet confidence. A long corridor washed in red light, a thumping sound system, and a counter facing the open kitchen set the mood before anything arrives from it. This creative small-plates spot in Lyon's first arrondissement takes its name from the satiety hormone, which doubles as a promise. Modern French

A husband-and-wife team runs this Modern French country restaurant in the Isère foothills, with the kitchen split neatly in half: she handles the savory courses and he owns desserts. The patio under exposed rafters is the place to be when the weather cooperates. The cooking sits comfortably between classic French instincts and something a little fresher, and Franck's desserts betray a serious past in more formal kitchens.

  95. Rank 2073. Les 5 Bouchons

    Seasonal French

Lunch under the arcades of Place Nationale, Montauban's grand central square. This is a family-run modern bistro where the menu rotates every two weeks to follow what's local and seasonal. The room stretches back with a vaulted ceiling that opens onto the kitchen, and the terrace is an obvious draw. The name is a nod to the five family members who run it, which is either charming or the kind of thing that ends up on a chalkboard.

    Modern French

Waxed concrete floors under exposed beams set the tone at this former village café, now a quietly confident modern restaurant run by a duo who trained together at one of the Landes region's most storied tables. The cooking takes traditional foundations and tilts them sideways, with seasonal produce doing most of the talking. On warm days, there are two terraces, one facing the street and one tucked into the courtyard for those who prefer their lunch without an audience.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
