  1. A sliding door off Sushi Azabu's dining room inside the Stanton Hotel opens onto a pale Hinoki cypress counter where an omakase menu moves between hot and cold courses with a few quiet surprises along the way. Most of the fish is handpicked at Japanese markets and flown in weekly, and the itamae are the kind who actually enjoy questions. For Ocean Drive, the whole setup is notably low on attitude.

  2. You receive an electronic letter with a coded cipher before you even find the door, which sets the mood for this East Village omakase counter built around the fictionalized office of a 19th-century world traveler. The fish runs from crowd-pleasing shima aji to less common black throat sea perch, and after the last bite, the downstairs library is there for a drink if you're willing to stay in character.

  3. Rank 172. Tomo

    Sushi

Floor-to-ceiling windows anchor the dining room of this contemporary sushi restaurant tucked into the Ritz-Carlton Residences on Peachtree. The menu leans slightly American in sensibility, running through eight plated courses before the sushi sequence begins. Four seats are reserved for omakase only, booked well ahead, while the rest of the room moves at a quieter pace that suits the address.

  4. Rank 172. Utzutzu

    Sushi

No sign on the building, a steep staircase to climb, and eight seats at the counter once you get there. This omakase spot in Alameda runs a set menu that moves through composed dishes and precise nigiri, with the cooked courses pulling as much weight as the fish. The Michelin Guide has taken notice. Bring cash, bring patience for the stairs, and don't be surprised if the eggplant is the thing you're still thinking about later.

  5. The counter runs the show at this handroll shop on East 3rd Street, a stretch that's become one of the better reasons to venture east of downtown. The room is dark and pared-down, the kind of place that hums without trying. The menu skips the usual handroll playbook, leaning into combinations that read strange on paper and make sense in your hands. Regulars fill that counter fast, so arriving early is its own form of planning.

  6. A steak-and-sushi restaurant inside Scottsdale Fashion Square, which tells you exactly who the room is built for. The menu runs from raw fish and specialty rolls through wagyu and pasta, so you can arrive with shopping bags and leave with a bill to match. The herb-roasted branzino, served over lemon rice, has drawn particular attention from local critics. Not cheap, but the kitchen takes the food more seriously than the setting might suggest.

  7. This is the West Coast outpost of a London izakaya chain, a pricey, dressed-up dinner spot inside the Guild Hotel with a boulder wall that does not mind being photographed. There's a sushi counter, a robata grill, a palm-ringed courtyard, and two bars stocked with more than 40 sakes. Expect expense-account energy and a dessert display that makes sharing feel like a negotiation.

  9. A doorbell on an unassuming Chinatown hallway lined with charred cedar is your only cue you've found this ten-seat omakase counter. Inside, chef Kunihide Nakajima runs an Edomae-style sushi experience that leans hard into traditional Japanese rhythms, from the tsumami courses to the seasonal fruit that closes the meal. The seafood comes from Japan, the aesthetic is spare, and the room does not reward fidgeting.

  10. Rank 210. Honor Bar

    Osaka-style Sushi

Honor Bar is a Hillstone-run American restaurant on the Del Mar stretch of the coast highway, where the old Bully's North held court for decades. It took nine years to open, so the underground parking garage feels earned. Expect booths, a long bar, a patio, a burger, a pressed-sushi counter, and a gin-and-Sauvignon Blanc martini. The smart casual dress code is enforced, so leave the board shorts in the car.

  11. A low-key sushi bar in SoMa where the omakase swings from spicy tuna rolls to herb-crusted lamb chops, which tells you something about the kitchen's ambitions. The menu covers crowd-pleasing maki and rice bowls for the neighborhood regulars, but the longer tasting format is where things get interesting. The service is warm enough that people treat it like their local, and apparently that's exactly what it is.

  12. Ichifuji is a ten-seat sushi bar in a Linda Vista strip mall, where two veteran itamae work a seasonal omakase that comes in a nigiri-heavy version if you'd rather skip the cooked courses. The bar is sleek and quiet, so plan on whispering reverently over your tuna. The heated patio is dog-friendly and more relaxed, which is handy if your dining companion has opinions about fish and four legs.

  20. Rank 223. Amakara Sushi

    Contemporary Sushi

A sumo wrestler mural runs the length of the wall at this sleek, sprawling contemporary sushi spot in downtown Dublin. The 188-seat room feels casual despite its size, with granite counters and deep slouchy chairs built for a long night. Weekend crowds come for creative rolls and ramen alongside a full cocktail list, and the clam ramen in butter-enriched broth tends to slow people down mid-conversation. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's top Japanese restaurants.

  21. Rank 223. Delage

    Omakase Japanese

A tiny counter next to Swan's Market in Old Oakland, Delage runs an omakase-only format that mixes high-quality nigiri with kaiseki-style courses built around whatever local produce is at its peak. The chef, Mikiko Ando, treats a summer tomato with the same care usually given to imported delicacies. Eight courses, two seatings a night, and reservations that require more foresight than most people expect from a casual-looking room.

  22. Rank 223. Gi-Jin

    Sushi

A giant dragon mural looms over a small room built around sashimi, handrolls, and an unusually serious gin list, sorted by style so you actually learn something. The kitchen pairs fatty toro with yuzu salt and tucks pomegranate jam into a hamachi roll without it feeling like a stunt. The bar seats more people than the tables do, which tells you something about the vibe. Better for two than for six.

    Edomae Sushi

Free jazz plays while you eat aged fish at an eight-seat bar, which tells you everything about the vibe before the first course lands. This is an Edomae-style omakase counter in Mountain View where the chef, a veteran named in the restaurant's own title, treats restraint as a philosophy: a piece of ikura arrives with zero seasoning, letting the ocean do the talking. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's best sushi restaurants.

  25. Rank 223. Mujiri

    Sushi

Each day's fish selection goes up on Instagram before you order, which is either the future of sushi or just a very good system. Mujiri is a takeout-only sushi shop in Oakland where the fish comes in from Japan and arrives in a wooden box arranged on bamboo leaves. The nigiri combo is a tight, concise menu done with real care, and the squid is cut to look like a feather boa, which sounds absurd until you see it.

  28. The omakase counter seats just two parties a night, each with a dedicated chef and a spread of peak-season seafood arranged in lacquered boxes you pick from yourself. It's a full Japanese restaurant in Dupont Circle that runs from handmade udon to grilled black cod, but the nigiri is the point, along with a specials list that turns up geoduck and cod milt when the season cooperates.

  29. Tomato nigiri, marinated and roasted until it snaps like fish, is probably the argument you'd make to a skeptic. Tane is a vegan izakaya and sushi spot in Berkeley, a sibling to San Francisco's Shizen, where the rice is taken seriously and the plant-based fills lean toward smoked beets and pickled fruit rather than an avocado-forward shrug. The crowd skews Berkeley in all the ways you'd expect, but the food is doing something more interesting than the neighborhood cliché suggests.

  30. Rank 223. Tekka

    Sushi

An 11-seat sushi bar in the Inner Richmond where the nigiri run thick enough to make you reconsider everything you thought you knew about portion sizes. There's no menu to study; you sit down and eat what the kitchen sends out. The hand-written notes covering the walls suggest regulars have feelings about this. A line forms well before the 6 p.m. seating, so arriving early is less a tip than a requirement.

  31. The open-air food court inside Ala Moana Center does a better job representing Honolulu's eating habits than most sit-down restaurants. Musubi Cafe Iyasume turns out around 20 varieties of Spam musubi, Ahi & Vegetable draws lines for its poke bowls and cheap nigiri, and the Hokkaido-based Brug Bakery sells pillowy breads including a curry-filled doughnut that sounds wrong and tastes right. Tables spill outside, and Palme D'Or Patisserie is steps away for Japanese cakes by the slice.

  32. Rank 223. Yuzu

    Sushi

A sushi spot in San Mateo where the non-sushi menu quietly steals the show. Regulars fill the seats and rarely need to look at a menu, and the chef keeps them coming back with rice dishes worth the trip on their own: hitsumamushi arrives in a hot stone vessel, the grains scorched and crackly, folded with salmon and yellowtail and finished with a kelp and green tea broth. Five variations of chirashi round things out, and lunch brings a chicken curry worth knowing about.

  33. An upside-down bonsai tree hangs from the ceiling while a crab butter candle drips tableside, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe here. Haii Keii is a futuristic sushi lounge where the design channels Blade Runner and the menu channels ambition, with inventive rolls, vegetarian nigiri that fools the table, and ube espresso martinis in a shade of purple that has no business being that pretty.

    Sushi

A horseshoe sushi bar anchors this grotto-like den tucked beneath Dante Boccuzzi's namesake bistro on Professor Ave. Boccuzzi came up at Nobu, and the sourcing at this intimate omakase and a la carte spot reflects that pedigree without the midtown price tag. A couple of shabu-shabu tables break up the raw-fish monotony, and the sake list is long enough to require its own homework. Go hungry and leave the decision-making to the kitchen.

  35. Rank 242. Kyojin

Tucked into Cady's Alley, Kyojin is the flashier sibling of an Arlington raw fish staple, with a full kitchen that lets the Bangkok-born chef push into hot izakaya territory alongside the maki. Truffle wasabi and torched wagyu over uni are the kinds of details that either excite you or make you very tired, depending on the day.

    Sushi

  37. Half Japanese grocery, half sushi bar, Noble Fish has been a Detroit-area institution for long enough that regulars have probably watched the dining room expand around them. The sushi counter is the draw: chefs assembling nigiri and sashimi with the kind of focus that makes you stop talking mid-sentence. Rolls run large, prices run reasonable, and the shelves of Japanese snacks and bottled teas make it hard to leave empty-handed.

  41. Rank 249. Doko

    Sushi

Doko is a Japanese restaurant that does sushi and yakitori under one roof, which is a bit like having a good opinion on both sides of an argument. The kitchen leans on charcoal, fermenting, and dry rubs, and the chicken fat rice with a slow-cooked egg on top is the dish people bring up. 44. Handies Douzo is a counter-service hand roll spot where the whole idea is that the nori is crisp for roughly ninety seconds, so you eat the temaki the moment it lands in your hand. 45. Rank 254. Sushi Nakano

    Edo-style Sushi

The rice gets as much attention as the fish, which tells you something about how seriously this strip-mall sushi spot takes its craft. Tucked into an Ahwatukee shopping center, Sushi Nakano turns out Edo-style nigiri and sashimi with meticulous sourcing and clean technique. American-style maki are on the list too, but catch the chef on a quiet night and ask what he's feeling, and the room rewards the curiosity.

  46. Six seats at the omakase counter is all you get, so book ahead. This intimate sushi shop in a north Phoenix strip mall, wedged between a frozen custard chain and a hearing aid center, runs a 12-to-14-piece nigiri tasting menu six nights a week. The chef, Osaka-born, keeps the fish list tight and seasonal. Walk-ins can still order nigiri and rolls at the surrounding tables, or take the omakase home packed into a bento box.

  48. Aya Sushi is a Bellaire sushi restaurant where a Tokyo-trained chef runs an omakase that costs $159 before the sake pairing adds $85. That is a real dinner out, so dress like you meant it. Eater lists it among Houston's best sushi spots.

  49. Rank 261. Casa Kenji

    Latin American

Casa Kenji is a Japanese-Latin sushi restaurant on Allen Parkway where the crudo arrives with stonefruit and coconut, and the ponzu has clearly been spending time with chimichurri. Expect aguachile, grilled octopus under mojo verde, and maki that flirts with caviar. The bar leans on sake, Japanese whisky, and cocktails heavy on yuzu and lychee. It's a dressed-up-a-little dinner, not a sushi-counter hush.

  50. Hando is a hand roll counter in the Heights where you perch on a stool and eat with your fingers, which is the correct way to eat a hand roll anyway. The sets come in three, four, or five rolls, the spicy tuna one carries real heat, and robata and small plates fill the gaps. Happy hour runs daily with $7 cocktails, and the speakeasy next door handles the nightcap, because Houston apparently needs a hidden bar for everything.

  51. Rank 261. Himari

    Sushi

A sushi restaurant just outside the Heights where the bar seats fill up with people who already know what they're ordering. The menu moves from cold sashimi plates through specialty maki and into nigiri and tempura, so there's room to graze or commit to a full spread. The patio exists for the handful of Houston evenings cool enough to justify it, which locals treat as a minor holiday.

  53. Rank 261. Izakaya-Wa

    Japanese

Izakaya-style dining in Memorial Village means shareable skewers, cold Kirin, and a sushi menu that does most of the heavy lifting. The gyu kushiyaki, beef tenderloin on a stick, and the Cowboy Roll, seared beef with avocado and eel sauce, give you a sense of the register: Japanese comfort food leaning playful. The crowd fills in after work and doesn't rush out. A second location exists in River Oaks, though the menus differ.

  54. Kaito is a small sushi counter on El Camino Real in Encinitas, where the menu is whatever the fish and the chef's standards agree on that day. Some days a favorite is simply absent, and nobody apologizes. Most people hand over the decision and order the omakase, which saves you from pretending you know what you're doing. It's a sit-down, pay-attention kind of meal, so dress like you plan to be watched.

  55. Rank 261. Kinme Omakase

  56. Rank 261. Koi

    Modern Sushi

Koi is a Montrose sushi restaurant that has settled into a sleek-but-comfortable groove, the kind of room where you can wear a nice shirt without feeling like you've been summoned to a tasting. The menu leans modern while keeping one foot in traditional technique, with fish flown in from Japan and hand rolls wrapped to order. Eat them quickly, since they're built to be unsealed right before the first bite, and finish with a carajillo.

  57. Kokoro is a quiet, minimalist kappo counter tucked into a Serra Mesa shopping plaza, the sort of address where you park between a dry cleaner and a vape shop and then walk into something hushed and serious. The chef works behind the bar in traditional wooden sandals, which tells you how the evening will go. Weekday lunch combos are the easy way in, and the miso soup can be swapped for udon for a couple of bucks.

  58. Rank 261. KOMO

    Sushi

The design riffs on the 1930s luxury steamship that once ran between the Hawaiian Islands, all sleek curves and amber light, which is a lot of scene-setting for a sushi bar but somehow earns it. Chef Kiyo Ikeda works the counter with fresh-grated wasabi and Hokkaido scallops topped with caviar. Dessert arrives in a Jewel Box, and you leave with a daruma doll for good luck, because of course you do.

  59. Rank 261. Kuu

    Modern Japanese

The chef trained under Nobu Matsuhisa, and the menu reflects it: modern Japanese fine dining where sashimi and nigiri share space with contemporary technique and a few ideas that nudge the tradition sideways. The room is polished and the patio offers an escape from it. It's the kind of place where people dress up a little without being told to, which says something about the neighborhood's ambitions.

Nobu's Coronado outpost is the upscale Japanese lounge you'd expect from a name that has its own fan club, set inside the Hotel del Coronado's renovated grounds. The room runs about 150 seats, indoors and out, and the menu leans on Peruvian-tinged sushi, skewers, tempura, and the famous miso black cod. Prices can make you do some quiet math, so dress for a dinner where the tab is a plot point. Eater lists it among San Diego's best sushi spots.

  66. Norigami is a hand roll and crudo bar in West U that began as a pop-up and now has a theme to maintain. That theme is origami, so the menu doubles as a craft project, with neon wall graphics that coach you through the folding. 67. Rank 261. Oao

    Stylish Sushi

  68. Rank 261. Oheya

    Sushi

Oheya is a 12-seat omakase counter tucked behind Uchi, which makes it the sushi equivalent of a speakeasy with better knife work. The name means "the room" in Japanese, and the room is small enough that you'll know your neighbors by the third course. A rotating chef rewrites the menu every couple of months, so the nontraditional ideas change often. The happy hour tasting is the cheaper way in.

  69. Oru is a sleek little sushi counter in the Heights from the Kira team, and the pitch is that nobody makes you sign up for a full omakase. You order a la carte, mixing nigiri, crudos, and a few composed plates as the mood strikes. The rice is served warm and deliberately textured, and dessert is banana ice cream topped with caviar, which is either a joke or a flex. Dress nicely, bring an appetite, and plan on more nigiri than you first think.

    Sushi

A neighborhood sushi restaurant on Westheimer where the menu covers enough ground that nobody at the table argues, from rolls and sashimi to noodles and donburi bowls. The kitchen leans into consistency, which is its own kind of promise. Portions are generous, the room stays calm, and the regulars clearly know it. A second location sits on Bellaire Boulevard if this one's busy.

  71. This is a strip-mall Japanese restaurant on Bellaire Boulevard, where the sushi bar shares the menu with noodles and donburi bowls, so nobody at the table has to lose an argument. The room is calm, the portions are generous, and the kitchen aims for dependable over dazzling. Edamame, fried gyoza, shrimp tempura, and a negi toro roll are the order of a person who knows exactly what they came for. It's a quiet, unshowy neighborhood regular.

  73. Sushi Ota is a sushi bar tucked into a Mission Bay strip mall, the kind of setting that suggests tacos or taxes, not omakase. It's been around forever and trained half the sushi chefs in town, and the founder has since handed the knives to a longtime chef. Lunch leans teriyaki and karaage, while dinner at the bar means nigiri combinations. Come casual and unwind, like everyone else hiding in plain sight.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
