The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. Period lanterns, glossy windows, and varicolored brickwork set the tone before you even walk in. The Spectator is a boutique hotel where the French Quarter and Market Street meet, wearing its Roaring Twenties bones lightly, with Modernist awnings keeping things from tipping into full costume drama. Four floors, a debonair bearing, and a Michelin Key make it a natural base for Charleston at its most photogenic.

    The awards

  2. Set on a working organic farm and historic inn, this refined New Mexico restaurant builds its menu around what's growing nearby, from the blue corn hominy and green chile on the plate to the lavender in your margarita. The kitchen makes its own bread, charcuterie, and pickles, and the cocktail list leans on Los Poblanos' own gin. A James Beard semifinalist, it's the kind of place where the farm outside the window is also the reason dinner tastes the way it does.

  3. Rows of towering palms line the drive up to this Spanish colonial resort sitting at the base of Camelback Mountain, and the inside follows through: Oriental rugs, deep saturated colors, and none of the beige Southwestern pastels you'll find everywhere else in Phoenix. Stone paths wind through orange groves and tucked-away courtyards. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. It reads less like a hotel than like a very grand private home someone forgot to lock.

  4. A wine bar in Middleburg horse country with over 70 pours by the glass, though the food holds its own against the list. Snacks lean indulgent, and the bigger plates, duck confit, lobster curry, hanger steak au poivre, are serious enough that calling this a wine bar starts to feel like underselling it. The chef's cocktail policy runs "no fru fru," which apparently still leaves room for mezcal, Chartreuse, and Aperol in one glass.

  5. Vineyards press right up to the guest room windows at this lodge and spa tucked into Carmel Valley, which sets the tone for everything: limestone fireplaces, marble soaking tubs for two, Italian linens, and a spa that works with wine grapes and lavender grown on the property. The pool anchors the center of the resort, and the restaurant draws its own crowd. It holds a Forbes Four Star and two Michelin Keys.

  6. Eastsound, on Orcas Island, is not where you expect to find a restaurant that landed on the New York Times's restaurant list, but here we are. Matia Kitchen (say "may-shah") is a small, ingredient-driven restaurant where local produce gets the kind of careful treatment that earned a James Beard nomination. The menu shifts with the season, and the cooking has a quiet confidence that the room itself, unpretentious as it is, seems entirely unbothered by.

  7. Rank 1407. Anjin

    Japanese

At Anjin, guests choose their own sake cup from a wall of them before settling in around a 20-seat bar wrapped around an open cooking area. It's a Japanese izakaya where the kitchen leans on local and seasonal ingredients, turning out skewers, seared eel, and a tempura walleye sandwich on housemade milk bread that's hard to stop thinking about. A 2026 James Beard nominee and on the New York Times Restaurant List the same year.

  8. The complimentary cocktail hour is hosted by your personal valet, who already knows your name before you've set down your bags. Casa Palmero is a boutique resort at Pebble Beach built around a Spanish Colonial manor house, all fountains and courtyard and lush Mediterranean landscaping. It holds a Forbes Four Star. With only a handful of rooms, it operates less like a hotel and more like borrowing a wealthy friend's estate, assuming that friend also pre-books your tee times.

    The awards

  9. The lobby frames the 18th hole and Stillwater Cove behind it, which tells you immediately what kind of resort this is. Golfers do make pilgrimages here, but the Forbes Four Star property also has a beach and tennis club with a heated pool, horseback trails on the same grounds where National Velvet was filmed, and rooms with big windows or private patios pointed squarely at the Big Sur coastline.

    The awards

  10. A sweeping spiral staircase and a towering wine cellar greet you in the lobby, which sets the tone for this 234-room luxury hotel on West End. Champalimaud designed the interiors, and the result lands somewhere between art hotel and serious whiskey destination. Three in-house dining and drinking spots lean into Southern fare, and the rooftop pool deck has skyline views that make Nashville's reputation for a good time feel like an understatement.

    The awards

  11. A boutique hotel built around the fact that Boise sits on the 43rd parallel in the 43rd state, which is either charming or a lot, depending on your tolerance for a theme. Rooms are contemporary with local artwork and a gem-toned palette, and the staff runs an arts passport program with access to the city's ballet, philharmonic, and opera. Chandlers, the onsite restaurant, doubles as a martini bar with live jazz most nights.

    The awards

  12. A hidden inn spread across a cluster of restored adobe houses in what locals call the oldest neighborhood in the country. The owners spent a lifetime collecting, and it shows: Persian rugs, Tibetan furniture, carved Indian doors, and bathrooms tiled in onyx and lapis. Wood-burning fireplaces, quiet courtyards, and a spa rooted in Silk Road rituals round it out. A passageway off the patio leads to the Dragon Room bar, where Georgia O'Keeffe used to drink.

  13. Rank 1410. Sudova

    Eastern European

Stained-glass windows were the starting point for the entire bar design, which tells you something about how deliberately this Eastern European restaurant was built. The menu pulls from the chef's grandmother's recipes, pierogi and pelmeni and khachapuri landing hot, and the medovik changes flavors every few months just to keep you coming back. A James Beard nominee, and Cincinnati Magazine's number-five restaurant.

  14. Sommelier Brent Braun runs the cellar here, with a wine list heavy on Riesling, Oregon producers, and natural bottles, plus small-batch collaborations with local winemakers usually poured by the glass. The kitchen leans seasonal and vegetable-forward, the kind of room where the food earns its place alongside the wine rather than playing second fiddle. A James Beard Semifinalist for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program, this chic Hawthorne wine restaurant draws the crowd that actually reads the back label.

  15. The moles here travel by region, Oaxacan one night, Yucatecan the next, because the chef grew up in Zacatecas and cooks like he has something to prove about how wide Mexican cuisine actually runs. This is a proper sit-down restaurant with plated ambitions and a menu that resists the Southwestern shorthand most of Santa Fe defaults to. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Southwest in 2024.

  16. A Romanesque Revival house on Piedmont Avenue, Stonehurst Place is a Midtown B&B where eight rooms sit inside a building that has been around forever, with two tucked into the carriage house out back. Rooms range from cozy attic retreats to suite-sized quarters with spa bathrooms. A screened porch handles the slow-morning reading crowd, and a sleeping porch moonlights as a TV lounge. Gourmet breakfast is included. It holds a Michelin Key and AAA Four Diamonds.

    The awards

  17. The pasta here is why Mike Easton built a cult following at his old Seattle spot, Il Corvo, and it's why people now drive 20 miles north of Walla Walla to a tiny Italian dinner restaurant in a historic Main Street building. Eighteen seats, no minors, and reservations that go fast. The menu leans into nearby farms and changes with the seasons, with Italian wine and cocktails keeping pace. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant in 2024.

  18. Rank 1420. Le Pigeon

    Modern French

The foie gras profiteroles have been on the dessert menu so long they've become a Portland landmark in their own right. Gabriel Rucker's modern French tasting spot on East Burnside has been doing ambitious, slightly unhinged prix fixe since forever, the kind of cooking where sturgeon pastrami with caviar shows up next to a vegetarian finger sandwich and both feel inevitable. A James Beard semifinalist, and still the room where Portland chefs go to be impressed.

  19. Rank 1421. Mesa Provisions

    Southwestern American

Duck fat tortillas arrive alongside a smoked half chicken dressed in red chile and pepita crema, which tells you what kind of American cooking this Nob Hill restaurant is doing. The chef draws on Southwestern flavors without turning the menu into a tourism brochure, and a James Beard nomination for Best Chef: Southwest followed accordingly. The room is quiet enough that you can hear yourself change your order after the food arrives at the next table.

  21. Ten seats, one seating, everyone served together: Chef's Table runs like a dinner party where the host happens to have a Michelin listing and a thing for caviar. It sits inside the private Astor Club on the Gold Coast, though non-members can book a spot. The tasting menu leans luxe, with ingredients that suit the hushed, gilded setting. Forbes Four Star. Jacket-and-a-good-story territory.

  22. Rank 1422. Caviar Russe

    Contemporary French

A marble staircase leads to this fine dining jewel box above Madison Avenue, where the whole point is caviar and the menu makes no apologies about it. Tins range from a modest Pacific Sturgeon scoop to Osetra by the 500 gram, priced accordingly. The French-inflected menu runs prix fixe or à la carte, with dishes like Dover sole in curry cream that somehow feel restrained given everything else going on.

  23. Down a flight of stairs inside the Monterey Plaza Hotel, this fine dining room opens onto an unobstructed view of the bay, which does a lot of the work before the food even arrives. The tasting menu leans on local catch and regional produce, then pulls in global flavors, wood-fired techniques, and miso-cured fish to keep things from feeling like a postcard. Forbes Four Star, and the wine pairing is well matched to the format.

  30. Beets buried under coals for eight hours is either an act of patience or a personality disorder, and at Francis Mallmann's open-fire Argentine steakhouse inside the Faena Hotel, it reads as both. The asado is serious, the proteins are large, and the bar at the far end fills with people dressed for exactly this kind of place.

  31. The kitchen garden outside supplies much of what lands on the table at this elegant tasting and à la carte restaurant inside Bernardus Lodge, and the kitchen treats it as a point of pride rather than a talking point. New American cooking with a seasonal, vegetable-forward lean, though the lamb has its admirers. A stone fireplace, muted tones, and a patio overlooking the Carmel Valley vineyards keep the room from feeling like a hotel obligation. Forbes Four Star.

The tenth floor of a downtown hotel turns out to be a fine place to stare at Walt Disney Concert Hall while José Andrés's team works through a menu of modern Californian cooking with a Spanish lean. The facade opens fully, making the room feel more rooftop than restaurant. A Forbes Four Star. 41. The fireplace and rough-hewn beams set the mood before the menu even arrives. This is fine dining inside a historic stone cottage on the San Ysidro Ranch grounds, where the kitchen leans hard on herbs, fruit, and vegetables grown on the property. Patio regulars tend to order the burger; others work through a prix-fixe that runs toward hamachi and Meyer lemon. The wine list is wide and considered, and the servers know it cold.

  63. A glass-encased walkway with water cascading around you is the first thing that happens, which sets the tone for a hotel that seems determined to pretend Times Square isn't happening outside. The seventh-floor lobby is all-white and calm, a minor act of defiance against the chaos below. It's still a W in the middle of the tourist vortex, but the interior makes a reasonable case for ignoring that entirely.

  65. Rows of labeled spice jars line the walls, which tells you something about how seriously this contemporary Indian restaurant takes its pantry. The chef sources ingredients from his own farm and runs a tight menu that swings between fiery naan and delicate tuna bhel without losing focus. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed on the New York Times' Miami list. The suburban strip-mall setting is the only thing that doesn't match the ambition.

  66. Chancho King started as a food truck wedged into Murray Hill block parties and now has a proper casual dining room serving Ecuadorian street food, which is rare enough in Jacksonville that people drive across town for the pork sandwich. The chef is a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: South. Birthdays get a steak with candles in it, a holdover from the oven-less years, and Sundays are for build-your-own ceviche.

  67. Rank 1469. Dolores

    Mexican

Dolores is a bright blue Mexican restaurant on Hope Street, cooking dishes from Puebla and Oaxaca, which is a lot of sunshine to commit to in a New England February. The bar goes well past tequila and mezcal into sotol and Oaxacan rum, and the sangria arrives by the pitcher, so bring people. The chef was a James Beard Best Chef: Northeast nominee, and you can also just sit down for tostadas and a drink.

  68. Rank 1469. Mesa Provisions

    Southern South Indian

Mesa is a casual Indian restaurant where the chef still walks over to greet every table, which is rarer than the marigolds. The menu pairs South Indian cooking with Southern comfort, so shrimp and basmati grits share a page with something called naanchos. There's no liquor license, so the drinks lean on port, sake, and vermouth, and the saffron-and-jaggery Manhattan has no interest in apologizing for it. 74. Sage Lodge sits on the banks of the Yellowstone River in Paradise Valley, which is either the most on-the-nose name in Montana or earned by the view, probably both. This Michelin three-key resort pairs modern-rustic rooms with a spa and two restaurants drawing from local ranches and farms. The northern entrance to the park puts you away from the crowds, which is the whole point.

  75. Rank 1478. Talulla

    American

A small, unfussy room on Observatory Hill where Italian fine dining quietly bends the rules, folding kimchi and fried garlic into ricotta-parsnip ravioli without making a scene about it. 76. Ski-in/ski-out access at the base of the Tetons, with a dedicated ski concierge to handle the lift tickets so you never have to queue at a kiosk like a civilian. This is a full-service mountain resort, which means gas fireplaces in the rooms, Western-leaning decor, and the general sense that someone is always around to solve your problems. Forbes Four Star. Summer fly-fishing trips replace the ski crowds, but the unhurried pace stays year-round.

  77. Rooms at this 64-room adults-only hotel look directly onto the Beringer Estate vineyards, which sets the tone before you've unpacked. The Indonesian-born Alila brand usually goes modernist, but St. Helena softened it into something with Arts and Crafts warmth. The spa is lavish, the restaurant sits in a separate Georgian farmhouse that reads as an intentional counterpoint to the rest, and downtown St. Helena is just outside. A Forbes Four Star property.

  78. Rough Oklahoma sandstone cut into a hillside at 7,000 feet, with suites that look straight out over the Tetons, describes this Aman resort well enough to explain why Wyoming made sense for a brand that started in Bali. Fewer than 40 suites means the whole place feels private, each room with a fireplace and a soaking tub angled toward the mountains. A Forbes Four Star property, and genuinely unlike anything else in the Rockies.

  79. Six rooms in a residential house a few blocks from the Danforth Street sibling, this Lark Hotels guest house holds a Michelin Key and wears its size lightly. Vintage furnishings and local artwork give it the feel of staying with someone who has better taste than you do. The neighborhood is quiet, walkable, and genuinely residential, which means you'll pass actual Portlanders on the way to breakfast.

  80. Rank 1482. Brennan's

This is the old-line Creole dining room on Royal Street where bananas foster was invented, and the servers still set it on fire at your table without losing track of your questions. 82. The rooftop radio tower sign still blinks over Ponce de Leon, and the Clermont Lounge still does its thing in the basement, which means this 94-room boutique hotel exists, rather perfectly, as the respectable middle of a very Atlanta sandwich. 84. Shinola, the brand that sells you a handsome watch and a bicycle you'll never ride, also runs this downtown Detroit hotel, and it lands with the Michelin Guide's one Key designation. The rooms carry the same crafted-in-America aesthetic the brand trades on, and the address on Woodward puts you squarely in a neighborhood that has visibly decided it isn't done yet. A stay here feels less like a hotel booking and more like a small wager on the city.

  86. The multicolored lights wrapping the 16-story tower make the resort hard to miss in the low-slung Coachella Valley skyline. This is a full-service casino resort with 71,000 square feet of gaming floor, two outdoor pools, a spa, a concert venue, and a sports bar with screens big enough to cause a mild panic. Las Vegas is four hours away, which the resort is clearly fine with. Forbes Four Star.

  87. Every room has a Juliet balcony and an electric fireplace, which tells you something about what Mirbeau is selling. This Forbes Four Star inn and spa in Rhinebeck takes its aesthetic cues from French Impressionism, soft palettes and all, though the Hudson Valley does most of the heavy lifting. The 12,000-square-foot spa is the main event: a Himalayan salt sauna, eucalyptus steam room, and a heated outdoor whirlpool with its own bar for anyone who needs a rosé with their jets.

  88. Ocean Drive is all neon and bass drops, which makes The Betsy's quietly art-forward lobby feel like a different city entirely. This boutique hotel holds a Michelin Key and earns it through restrained, gallery-like interiors and a pace that has no interest in competing with the clubs next door. Guests who want South Beach energy but need somewhere civilized to recover from it tend to find their way here.

  89. The chandelier alone is worth pausing on, a sprawling coral-reef of a thing hanging over one of Seattle's most coveted oyster bar stools. This lively Ballard neighborhood spot runs on meticulously sourced oysters and a short, focused seafood menu, and the wait for a table is long enough that the tile-clad bar next door exists partly as a waiting room. A James Beard nominee for Outstanding Restaurant, it's the place locals bring visitors who ask where to eat in Seattle.

  90. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Midtown skyline from rooms that got a serious refresh, with local art on the walls and furniture that no longer suggests a corporate retreat. This is a contemporary hotel on Peachtree Street, polished and spacious, with a lobby full of comfortable couches that actually invites lingering. The bar next door pulls in the neighborhood crowd, which in Midtown means you'll never feel like you wandered into an airport Marriott.

  91. Harbor views come standard at this full-service hotel in Boston's Seaport District, where the rooms angle toward the water and the nautical nods in the decor are tasteful enough to forgive. Three dining options, a health club with massage, and complimentary bikes keep things moving. The Convention Center is steps away, which tells you something about the weekday crowd, but the ICA and the waterfront are right there too.

  92. A 23-room boutique hotel on El Camino Real where valet, gratuities, room service, and a personal concierge are folded into the rate, so the only decision left is what to do with your hands. Staff greet you by name with your preferred drink, the shared library and kitchen are yours to treat as home, and the guest pantry freezer is stocked with Tin Pot Creamery ice cream. Silicon Valley's expense accounts have found their natural habitat.

  93. A Morris Lapidus building at the foot of Lincoln Road, sitting right on the Atlantic, is a pretty strong opening argument for a hotel. The Ritz-Carlton South Beach is a full resort in the classic Miami Beach mold, with ocean-view rooms done in warm interiors, marble baths, and beds topped with feather mattresses. The spa anchors the property, and a VIP Club Lounge is the only one of its kind on South Beach, for guests who prefer their perks with a zip code.

  94. John Pawson's cedar-doored, travertine-and-tropical-greenery tower sits exactly where the Sunset Strip bleeds into Beverly Hills, and the hotel doesn't pretend that's a coincidence. Rooms run spare and luxurious, with city or Hills views, while downstairs the restaurant, lobby bar, rooftop, and subterranean nightclub form a full ecosystem for people who want refinement and decadence in the same evening. The spa exists, diplomatically, to make tomorrow possible.

  95. ChopnBlok is a casual, order-at-the-counter West African spot that outgrew its food hall stall and settled into Montrose. Lunch means rice bowls with braised short rib or suya-spiced steak, plus a red stew rooted in the chef-owner's childhood. The cocktail list leans on West African ingredients, so a midday meal can slide into happy hour without anyone filing a complaint. The chef is a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Texas.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
