  1. Rank 389. In-A-Tub

    Taqueria

The snack-sized tacos here get deep-fried and coated in an aggressive orange cheese dust that looks exactly like what it is, and Kansas City has been arguing about whether that's genius or not since 1957. This old-school fast food counter does its own riff on the KC taco, served with hot sauce for dunking, plus a Pocket Burger that improves on the loose meat sandwich format by being noticeably juicier. A local institution that polarizes, never bores.

  2. Rank 389. Julieta

    Taqueria

Blue corn tortillas made with help from the chef's mother is a pretty good origin story for a taco shop. Julieta lives inside the historic Stutz Building, and the line sometimes wraps into the alley before the place even opens. The team built a following through years of pop-ups before landing here, and the fillings rotate, though braised brisket and al pastor tend to anchor the menu.

  4. Rank 389. La Parilla Loca

    Tijuana Taqueria

The charcoal grill at this Oakland taco truck runs hot enough to split chorizo links open for maximum char, which tells you everything about the priorities here. Tijuana-style tacos, asada at the center, the smoke doing real work on every bite. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's best tacos, which tracks when you're standing in the little line that forms between the truck and the grill.

  5. Rank 389. Mi Lindo Apatzingán

    Michoacán Food Truck

A food truck parked outside an auto repair shop on South First, Mi Lindo Apatzingán serves the kind of hyper-regional Michoacán cooking that doesn't turn up often anywhere in the Bay Area. The birria de lengua taco, beef tongue simmered in adobo until it collapses into sticky cubes, is the thing to order. Morisqueta, rice under soupy beans with stewed ribs, is worth the detour on its own. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area.

  7. Rank 389. Naranjos Taqueria

    Michoacán Taqueria

The barbacoa draws the crowd to this Michoacan-style taqueria in Redwood City, but the deeper menu rewards regulars who order cachete or nervio, the latter sticky with gelatinous fat in a way that takes some commitment. Everything arrives folded on yellow corn tortillas with a tangy salsa verde. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's finest tacos. It's small, parking is a project, and the whole experience costs almost nothing.

  8. Rank 389. Panadería Nuevo Leon

    Mexican Bakery

This is a Pilsen panadería where you grab a tray and a pair of tongs at the door, which makes you feel briefly like you work there. The shelves of Mexican pan dulce run from cocoa-dusted conchas to molasses-heavy marranitos, and a dozen kinds of tortillas, spinach and black bean jalapeño among them, cover the savory side. Nothing costs much, so you'll leave with far more than you planned.

  9. A trompo of ruby-red pork spins under a blue canopy near the Oakland Flea Market, sliced thin onto tortillas with a technique that keeps the edges crisp every time. This Pueblan taco stand tops each one with a slab of pineapple that pulls the chile marinade into focus. Get there early while the spit is still full. The gringa, a small al pastor quesadilla on flour tortilla, is worth the detour too.

  10. A cart outside a Cardenas grocery store in East Oakland, where the vendor shouts "Tacos! Tacos de canasta!" loud enough to settle the question of where lunch is. Tacos de canasta are a Mexico City staple rarely spotted in the Bay, and this stand does them straight: steamed basket tacos stuffed with chicharron, pollo con mole, or papas con chorizo, pulled from baskets lined in red picnic cloth, with pickled veggies and a chimichurri aioli that overperform for the price.

  11. A spinning trompo in the window is the whole argument for this Mission District taco stand. Thin-shaved al pastor lands straight from the spit onto the tortilla, pineapple shard included, with three salsas on the side ranging from tangy to genuinely punishing. The tripas are the quiet move, especially ordered doraditas, fried until crispy. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area, which feels about right from the sidewalk.

  12. Rank 389. Tacos El Chilanguito

    Al Pastor Mexican

A trompo spins outside a business park on Phelan Avenue, which is either an unlikely setting or a perfect one depending on how hungry you are. This taco trailer is run by chilangos from Mexico City, and the al pastor is their calling card: pork shaved from the vertical spit, crisped on the plancha, landed on yellow corn tortillas with pineapple and three salsas. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's best tacos.

  13. Rank 389. Tacos El Güero

    Jaliscan Taqueria

A beef head steamer and a roving trompo in a dirt lot next to a KFC: this is Jalisco-style taqueria truck cooking, not a punchline. The family lonchera turns out small tacos packed with cabeza in the classic al vapor style, plus carnaza and ojo for the committed. Canopies and folding seating stretch out to handle the crowd that shows up anyway. The San Francisco Chronicle called them the best tacos in the Bay Area.

  14. Rank 389. Tacos El Panzon

    Chavinda-style Mexican

The salsa flies through the air here, literally flicked by spoon onto your tacos in a move that's part performance, part seasoning strategy. This Chavinda-style taqueria in Richmond cooks its meats together in one enormous steel cauldron, so the chorizo, al pastor, and beef all end up in each other's business. Mix and match fillings at no extra cost. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's finest tacos, which explains the weekend wait.

  15. Rank 389. Tacos Gonzalez

    Tijuana Taqueria

Mesquite smoke is the advertisement here, drifting into Foothill Boulevard long before you spot the food truck parked in a doughnut shop lot. This is a Tijuana-style taqueria, the charcoal grill set up out front where it can do the most damage. Meats come properly baptized in smoke, wrapped in paper the traditional way, with thick guacamole on the side. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's finest tacos, and the line makes that case without any help.

  16. Mesquite coals do the heavy lifting at this taqueria in San Lorenzo, where the smoke gets into the chorizo and the asada before anything else happens. The Villa family presses tortillas by hand and wraps each taco into a paper cone Tijuana-style, with a thick scoop of guacamole tucked in. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area. The fatty cabeza with salsa verde is the one regulars order without looking up.

  17. The trompo here gets more local fanfare than most politicians, and for good reason: al pastor is the gravitational center of this Oaxacan taqueria on National Avenue, Milwaukee's first sit-down location from a south-side truck fleet that's grown into something of a mini empire. The menu sprawls into tlayudas, birria de chivo, volcánes, and mulitas, with aguas frescas to cool things down after the fiery red salsa does its work.

  18. The wheat-fiber "asada" is marinated in beer and smoke until it tastes like a backyard grill, which is a reasonable way to open an argument. This snug Oakland taqueria makes the case that vegan tacos don't need an asterisk, with in-house fillings, mushroom carnitas with real richness, and horchata that holds its own. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area, vegan or otherwise implied.

  21. A tiny, no-frills taqueria on the old Northside where the pricing seems to have missed the memo about LoHi. Five tacos come with guacamole and tomatillo salsa, and the fillings wander from fresh fish to browned bison to zucchini and mushroom. There are also tortas, tostadas, and Mexican hamburgers, which are basically burritos stuffed with a patty. Order at the counter and wear whatever you've got on.

  22. A mural of Anthony Bourdain watches over the salsa bar at this colorful westside Mexican spot, which also happens to make a mole latte. The blackboard menu shifts constantly, running from mahi mahi tacos to vegan Cuban tacos, so there's rarely a reason to expect the same meal twice. Hikers coming down from Tumamoc Hill fill the room, still sandy from the trail, which tells you roughly what to wear.

  23. Outdoor-only seating under a covered brick patio means you're eating in the Tucson sun no matter what, which somehow feels exactly right for a no-frills Mexican spot that's been feeding the neighborhood forever. Carne asada tacos, chile rellenos in tomato sauce, tamales, breakfast burritos, horchata from a big jar on the counter. The menu hasn't drifted toward trend, and the regulars at the picnic tables seem glad about that.

  24. Rank 428. Tanias 33

    Mexican

Hand-painted signage and coolers stocked with aguas frescas and Mexican sodas set the tone at this old-school Tucson taquería. The menu runs from breakfast burritos to chilaquiles to pozole available by the cup or, if things are going well, by the gallon. Vegetarians eat as well as anyone here, which is not always a given at a place this unapologetically no-frills. Bring cash and an appetite calibrated for generous portions.

  25. Rank 431. Birria Landia

    Pueblan Mexican Food Truck

  26. A nomadic chalupa stand that bounces around northern Queens, posting intersections on Facebook like a food truck that's read too much Kerouac. Track it down and you're rewarded with tortillas fried in hot lard, then loaded with shredded pork, white onion, and whichever salsa you choose, or both. The New York Times named it among New York's top dishes of 2024 and ranked it on their 100 Best Restaurants list. Eight chalupas run about ten dollars.

  34. Rank 433. The Monica

    Mexican

String lights turn a downtown alley into a courtyard, and that outdoor patio is reason enough to seek this place out on a warm Tucson evening. The Monica is a casual Mexican restaurant where the kitchen plays with familiar forms, running tamale dough through a eggs Benedict riff that shouldn't work as well as it does. The room reads urban but unfussy, the kind of spot that pulls in a mixed downtown crowd without trying too hard.

  35. A gas station kitchen in West Campus that somehow renders the question "what do you want to eat?" basically unanswerable, because the menu covers Mexican food, deli sandwiches, breakfast, hot dogs, and burgers without flinching. The burritos are massive, the tacos come street-style, and the sandwiches run Boar's Head meats on sourdough with house chipotle mayo. A reliable feed before, after, or instead of whatever else you had planned.

  43. Rank 457. Tacos El Gordo

    Tijuana Taqueria

This is a Tijuana-style taqueria on Charleston with a drive-thru and a line that never seems to get the memo that it's a taco stand. Inside, each meat gets its own queue, so groups split up, order in parallel, and reunite holding paper plates like pallbearers. It runs until 2 a.m., prices stay in paper-plate territory, and the menu leans hard on beef and pork, so bring people who eat both.

  44. Cielito Lindo is a family-run Mexican counter in the Outer Richmond, best known for quesabirria tacos and a breakfast burrito menu that comes in 13 variations. The tortilla is soft and flaky, the eggs fluffy, the cheese everywhere. With only about a dozen seats, the plan is to carry it two blocks to Golden Gate Park and eat it on a bench like a sensible person. Cheap, casual, and no one will mind if you get sauce on your jacket.

  45. A colorful mural marks this East End taqueria, where the breakfast taco is taken seriously and the line on weekends is not a rumor. Chorizo, potato, and egg; bacon and egg; barbacoa on Saturdays when the patience holds out. It's a cash-and-plastic, paper-plate kind of spot, which is exactly the point. Show up early or budget time to stand around looking forward to it.

  47. Rank 460. El Tiempo Cantina

    Tex-Mex Cantina

  48. The queso flameado arrives still bubbling, and that's the right way to start at this Tex-Mex cantina with deep roots in Houston's Ninfa's family tree. The menu runs the full Tex-Mex spread: big crispy tacos, cheese enchiladas, fajitas, fresh guacamole. Order the combo plate if you want a little of everything, which most tables seem to. The margaritas have their own following, and for good reason.

  56. La Espiga de Oro is a Mission District mash-up of butcher counter, bakery, and Mexican restaurant, open early enough that the neighborhood is still deciding about coffee. The breakfast burrito is mostly chorizo, with the eggs and cheese showing up like guests who weren't sure they were invited. It's a few dollars, it's counter service, and it works as a full week's worth of protein, so plan the rest of your day around it.

  57. Molina's Cantina is a longtime Tex-Mex family restaurant, out in Fulshear's strip-mall sprawl, where half the menu is named after actual customers. Somewhere a regular is eating a burrito with his own name on it, smothered in chili con carne, and trying to look casual. It's sit-down enchilada-and-fajita territory with Houstonia nods for both its margaritas and its Mexican food, so jeans and an appetite will do.

  58. The menu at this old-school Tex-Mex cantina names dishes after the regulars who inspired them, which tells you something about how long people have been coming back. The Berlys Burrito, the C.W. Special, the Williams Special: each one a standing order that became permanent. It's the kind of place where the margaritas are a serious matter and the chili con carne shows up on everything for good reason.

  59. La Neta is a sit-down Mexican restaurant in Downtown Summerlin that went heavy on the decor: velvet booths, stained glass murals, chandeliers, and enough foliage cascading from the ceiling to suggest the plants are also on the guest list. Expect margaritas and a menu that moves from oysters and ceviche to flautas. Weekend brunch comes with bottomless drinks, which pairs conveniently with the Saturday farmers market nearby.

  62. The cemita poblana here comes stuffed with thinly pounded, breaded beef cutlet, which tells you immediately what kind of restaurant this is. El Rincon Poblano is a family-run Mexican spot in a strip mall off Thomas Road, with Pueblan art on pastel walls and a menu that goes well past mole. The taco arabe, pork carved off a trompo and folded into a near-translucent flour tortilla, is a lesson in where al pastor came from.

  63. Mole negro shows up on nearly everything here, the rich, dark kind that takes days to make and coats burritos and chilaquiles alike. Alebrijes is a casual Oaxacan cafe in Litchfield Park with indoor tables, bar seats, and a shaded patio, the sort of place where the specials board does the real work. Concha French toast and coffee cocktails share menu space with pozole. Expect a wait, which the regulars seem entirely unbothered by.

  66. Rank 481. Cafe Isabella

    Mexican Café

Cafe Isabella is a counter-service Mexican cafe on Taylor Street where the griddled breakfast burrito does most of the talking. Carnitas, eggs, and cheese come tightly wrapped, and adding avocado and sour cream is the polite way to make it heavier. A few sidewalk tables exist for the impatient, though the thing travels fine, which suits the Nob Hill locals who climb down from their Victorians still recovering from the night before.

  67. Carnitas Uruapan is a casual carnitas house where the order is measured in pounds, not tacos, though a single taco is allowed. The pork follows a recipe from Michoacán, the region that more or less invented the whole idea, and it comes with cactus salad, pickled chiles, and chicharrón. Brain quesadillas are on offer for the committed. The family now runs three locations, and the one on 55th St hosts the loyal regulars.

    Oaxacan

The mole coloradito here comes from a recipe the chef started learning from her grandmother in Oaxaca at age five, and that kind of timeline tends to show. This is a small Oaxacan restaurant in Burien, colorful ceramics on every table, a handful of seats inside and a covered patio out back. The molotes, fried masa dumplings buried under smoky morita and avocado salsa, are a good reason to arrive hungry.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
