  1. Rank 3801. Pony Up

    Cocktail Bar

A portrait of an imperial bulldog greets you at the door, which is a fair warning. Pony Up is a cocktail bar in LoDo that earns its personality through drinks like a tequila-shochu-sherry situation spiked with Korean chili paste, and shots of George Dickel chased with roast-beef jus. That jus comes from the kitchen, which runs French dips as its signature, an odd pairing that somehow makes complete sense by the second round.

  2. Rank 3801. Rough Rider

    Cocktail Bar

You reach it by taking the middle elevator in the Ten-0-One Building down to the basement, which sets the tone before the doors even open. Rough Rider is a cocktail bar with a full food menu, done up in dark wood and high ceilings, somewhere between a Victorian gentlemen's club and a downtown Phoenix speakeasy. The drinks lean into the era with names like Happy Birthday Mr. President, and the kitchen sends out a raw bar and a bone-in pork chop that suggest nobody phoned it in.

  4. Rank 3804. Tonino

    Italian

Twenty-eight seats in Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood that has somehow gotten by without Italian restaurants until now. Tonino is a pasta-and-pizza spot where the chef's whole philosophy seems to be finding a handful of good ingredients and then leaving them mostly alone. The tiramisù has built a devoted following. A James Beard semifinalist and on the New York Times' 25 best in Boston, it reads like someone's favorite neighborhood secret that stopped being secret.

  5. Rank 3805. Durant's

    Steakhouse

The move at this old-school Phoenix chophouse is to come in through the kitchen, which is less a quirk than a statement of intent. Red leather banquettes, scarlet wallpaper, dim lighting, and the kind of martinis that explain why the power brokers still fill the room. The relish tray arrives gratis over ice, which somehow feels exactly right. They've been doing the 48-ounce porterhouse and prime rib forever, and they're not taking notes from anyone.

  6. Jicama ribs that read as meat are the talking point at this Vietnamese sit-down in Saint Paul, where chef Eric Pham opened his first restaurant as a tribute to his mother, a longtime figure at the family's Minneapolis institution Quang. Most plates land at $21 or under, and the menu runs from bún chay to a crispy chicken sandwich without any of it feeling like a compromise. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List in 2026.

  7. Rank 3807. Petite Boheme

    French Cocktail Bar

  8. Rank 3808. My Little Chamomile

    Mediterranean Turkish

Tucked into a cobblestone Georgetown alley, this Turkish and Mediterranean dining room draws from homestyle cooking, particularly the "From Mom's Kitchen" section of the menu. The sesame-and-nigella-seeded bread goes with everything, and the rice-stuffed artichoke, a recreation of an Aegean dish the chef grew up eating, earned a Washingtonian dish of the year. The chef was a 2026 James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  11. Rank 3811. Homer

    Wood-Fired Mediterranean

The pitas come out of the wood oven almost too hot to handle, still puffed from the heat, and they anchor a menu built around big Mediterranean flavors in a neighborhood restaurant that also runs a soft-serve window because why not. The chef knows the local dogs by name, which tells you something about the room. Lamb ribs and meatballs fill out the regular order for anyone who can't decide, which is most people.

  12. Menus written entirely in Spanish set the tone at this all-white coffee shop in downtown Phoenix, where the minimalism stops at the decor. The drinks lean on flavors from the chef's Mexican childhood: sweetened condensed milk and piloncillo folded into espresso, cafe de olla fragrant with cinnamon and anise, horchata made with wild rice and almond milk. It's a quiet, unhurried room that draws people who plan to stay a while.

  15. A Hilton luxury-boutique hotel tucked a block off East Market in an old-school office building whose bones have been kept and dressed up by AvroKO in a palette that reads firmly present-tense. The result is a place that feels considered rather than corporate, and its East Market address puts guests within easy reach of some of the city's better dining and nightlife without making them work for it.

  17. A hotel one block from the Treasury Building, which puts it about as close to the White House as anything that isn't the White House. The interiors run toward bold, design-forward choices that would raise eyebrows among the city's more buttoned-up regulars, which is precisely the point. Pennsylvania Avenue has never been known for its nightlife, and Hotel Washington seems quietly determined to do something about that.

  18. A pointillist Ruth Bader Ginsburg covers an entire lobby wall, which tells you most of what you need to know before you've even checked in. Hotel Zena is a Viceroy property in Logan Circle that committed fully to a feminist theme after a full renovation, with warrior guardian sculptures flanking the entrance and women's achievements woven into the decor throughout. Subtle it is not, but it commits with conviction.

  21. A 1940s Art Deco building in Dupont Circle, warm with wood and leather in the public rooms and quietly monochrome in the guest rooms, this boutique hotel leans into glamour without making you feel like you're in a museum. The neighborhood is genuinely lived-in, which helps. Lyle's, the in-house restaurant and bar, runs from breakfast through last call, so you rarely have a reason to leave before you're ready.

    The awards

  22. A former sugar factory at the quieter, river-facing edge of the French Quarter, ONE11 is a hotel whose exposed brick, timber joists, and original columns do most of the decorating. Rooms lean into the loft feeling without the austerity, landing somewhere warm and a little theatrical, which fits the neighborhood. Batture Bistro + Bar handles everything from morning coffee to late-night cocktails. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected New Orleans hotels.

  24. A rooftop pool high enough to make you feel like you're swimming through the skyline sets the tone at this full-service hotel in River North. It runs on a go-big logic, with a 24-hour fitness center and complete business facilities, yet somehow still feels approachable, the kind of place that fusses over your dog and your kids in equal measure. Midwestern warmth, it turns out, scales up just fine.

  28. A wrought-iron-balconied courtyard that stops you mid-step is the heart of this boutique hotel on Upper King Street. Morris Adjmi Architects designed the façade to nod at Charleston's architectural jumble without copying any of it, but step inside and the Victorian atmosphere takes over completely. Fifty rooms keep it from feeling like a scene. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  29. The former home of the Portland Press Herald spent nearly a century printing the news; now it's a 110-room boutique hotel in the Old Port where the newspaper theme is more than wallpaper. The building itself does the heavy lifting, so the vintage journalist decor reads like atmosphere rather than concept. Selected by the Michelin Guide, it's a Marriott Autograph Collection property, which means independent spirit with loyalty points attached.

    The awards

  30. The cast-iron and red-brick facade fits right into Denver's River North Arts District, but the interiors take a sharp left turn into the salon of a 17th-century French marquise. This boutique hotel pulls it off without apology. Rooms run contemporary and plush, the staff dress the part, and the building houses Death & Co's Denver outpost alongside a pan-Latin restaurant from James Beard winner Dana Rodriguez.

    The awards

  31. A boutique-within-a-hotel concept tucked inside Park MGM, this feels like it belongs on a different block than the Strip. Jacques Garcia designed the rooms, which means rich fabrics and a faint sense of old-world theater. By day the pool is a pool; by evening it tilts Moroccan and nightclub. The bar and restaurant spread through the common spaces the way they do in New York and Los Angeles, which is to say they take over completely.

    The awards

  32. The awards

  33. Sitting at 16th and Market, this boutique luxury hotel puts you within walking distance of Union Station, Coors Field, and most of Denver's better dinner decisions. Rooms lean into a retro-inflected modern sensibility that the Thompson brand does well. Ludo Lefebvre's French restaurant Chez Maggy is downstairs, and the rooftop bar Reynard Social has a Rockies view that makes it hard to go back inside.

    The awards

  34. Mid-century modern lines and warm, well-considered rooms put this Dupont Circle hotel in that narrow lane between aggressively trendy and forgettable business-chain. The Viceroy brand has a knack for making a lobby feel like somewhere you'd actually want to sit, and the DC outpost follows through with enough polish to satisfy the points-chasing traveler and enough personality to keep the boutique crowd from bolting.

    The awards

  35. Richard Branson's hotel brand carries its personality the way a tour rider carries a no-brown-M&Ms clause: loudly, and with full commitment. This New Orleans outpost is a full-service hotel on Baronne Street where the decor leans maximalist, the common spaces are built for lingering, and the vibe skews young and sociable without feeling like a hostel that found a design budget. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

    The awards

  36. A skyscraper hotel steps from City Hall, the W Philadelphia plays against type: the usual brand theatrics are dialed back in favor of something more sober and grown-up, without losing the style. Public spaces run to a swanky lounge, a rooftop bar, and a modern Italian restaurant evoking Sixties Rome. For a W, surprisingly easy to take seriously.

  38. Rank 3838. Sanders BBQ Supply Co.

    Southern Barbecue

The oxtail gumbo here carries a whiff of hardwood smoke, which tells you everything about how this Beverly smokehouse operates. Sanders BBQ Supply Co. sits about twelve miles south of the Loop, deep in a neighborhood few tourists reach, doing the kind of slow, wood-fired barbecue that connects to Chicago's Great Migration roots. The New York Times put it on their 2025 restaurant list, and the pitmaster earned a James Beard semifinalist nod.

  43. Rank 3843. Alebrije

    Mexican

The darkly tinted windows and near-invisible signage in an East Nashville strip mall suggest you might have the wrong address, but push through. This casual Mexican restaurant built its following as a pandemic pop-up and landed here with a menu centered on masa, nixtamalized and ground in-house, turning up as tortillas, sopes, and tostadas. The New York Times named the asparagus tostada one of the best restaurant dishes eaten across the country in 2025. No liquor license, but the taco shop next door sells beer.

  44. A red-brick building with white trim and a weathervane off Central Avenue that reads more Boston than Phoenix, until the palm trees remind you where you are. This outdoor coffee shop serves espresso drinks, cold brew, and specialty lattes through a window, with fresh-griddled waffles and Bagelfelds bagels to go alongside. Bring a book and a jacket in winter; in summer, you're in the sun.

  45. Three historic buildings stitched together in Wilmington's waterfront district make up this Palisociety hotel, where rough post-industrial edges meet genuine Southern charm. Whimsical wallpaper, antiques, mid-century pieces, and contemporary furnishings share space without apology, the way a good thrift store wishes it could. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key, and it earns the designation by feeling local in a way that most boutique hotels only gesture at.

    The awards

  46. A Queen Anne house from the 1890s turned guest house, a Michelin Key holder, sitting just off Wilmington's riverside downtown. The rooms swing between serene cream-and-blond-wood calm and full-on Klein blue intensity, with contemporary art and one-off antiques keeping things from tipping into boutique-hotel cliche. There's a reading room, proper porches, and a vegan breakfast from a Californian chef that earns the morning.

  47. A converted textile mill with original worn brick and warehouse ceilings sets the tone for this 33-room luxury boutique hotel in Biddeford, a riverside town that doesn't get nearly enough attention. The design swings between clean modern lines and Art Deco flourishes without losing the thread. A rooftop pool, lobby bar, café, and a brewery-restaurant round it out. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

The buffalo wings here have a two-day head start on you: brined overnight, chilled, then fried and sauced to order with Frank's and butter. This is the food operation inside the U Street bar Sport & Social, run by Scott Drewno, the chef behind Anju. The wings earned a spot on the Washingtonian's favorite dishes of the year, and after one order you'll understand the fuss, even if ordering anything else feels beside the point.

  50. A massive, custom-built pit dominates the backyard of this East Austin BBQ shop, and the line that snakes toward it on any given afternoon is its own kind of argument. The brisket arrives at the counter still warm enough to stop you mid-sentence, and the house-made sausages and ribs don't ask permission either. Tammy Wynette on the speakers, kimchi and chipotle slaw in the case. La Barbecue holds a Michelin star.

  51. The complimentary chips here come from heirloom corn, and the salsas that arrive with them set the tone for the whole meal: this is a Tex-Mex restaurant where the sauces are the point. The kitchen runs mole the way a French house runs stocks, with a dark, cinnamon-and-chocolate version draped over a spice-rubbed Cornish hen that arrives alongside basmati rice, because why not. Tres leches gets the same treatment, poured tableside.

    Intimate Speakeasy

You ring an unmarked bell on an unmarked door below street level, and that's the whole game announced before you've ordered a drink. Inside, this cocktail bar in Chelsea is all deep armchairs, shaded lamps, a fireplace, and curtained alcoves fitted with a buzzer to summon your server when you're ready. It's a speakeasy setup done without irony, and the room is quiet enough that people actually talk to each other.

A no-reservations Portuguese spot in Cypress Park where the counter seats facing the open kitchen fill up fast and everyone else negotiates the small room. 67. Rank 3869. Ken

Six seats behind an unmarked door on Divisadero, Ken is the kind of omakase counter that rewards people who actually read their texts. The chef, a Hong Kong native who came up at respected Bay Area sushi bars, runs a menu that moves between classic nigiri and composed small plates, with cured egg yolk and preserved plum showing up where you'd least expect them. Unhurried, quiet, and booked well in advance.

  75. The booths at this coal-oven pizza parlor are so carved up with initials and signatures that the wood itself is basically a guestbook for the last several decades of Greenwich Village. Whole pies only, thin-crusted and charred just right, no slices and no exceptions. The room is loud, cheerful, and not trying to impress anyone, which is precisely why it has been full since before most of its customers were born.

  77. Rank 3880. Credence

    Contemporary American

Live fire anchors the open kitchen at this spacious Contemporary American restaurant, where Levi Goode channels five generations of Texas roots into a menu that swings from seafood towers to whole duck. The monkey bread served alongside the deviled crab is the kind of detail that makes a dish unforgettable. Ranch-inspired without being the least bit kitschy, it's the sort of place Houston does better than it gets credit for.

  78. Rank 3882. Tei-An

    Japanese Noodle Shop

The house-made soba is the point here, though the menu at this elegant soba house in the Arts District runs wide enough to spark a real argument about what to order. Cold or hot noodles arrive with seasonal toppings that range from strictly traditional to a Bolognese that has no business working as well as it does. Grilled freshwater eel comes with its crisped spine, exactly as it would in Japan. The Michelin Guide has it listed among its selected restaurants in Dallas.

  79. A 10,000-pound custom oven fires the pies at this Arcadia pizzeria, and a quarter of every dollar goes to the dog rescue operating out back. Each evening, adoptable puppies come out to a covered patio pen, which is where your appetizers will go cold. The pizza is better than you'd expect from a place whose headline act has floppy ears. Bring a date or the kids, and decide in advance exactly how many dogs you're allowed to take home.

  80. Rank 3884. Beteseb

    Ethiopian

A sunny Ethiopian cafe in Silver Spring where you pick your injera before anything else, choosing between imported (extra tangy) and local, both soft enough to do the job properly. The menu is vibrant and the cooking runs from a bubbling chickpea stew to crispy beef tibs to collards that hold their own. Show up early and order the wheat flatbread fried in butter and drizzled with honey. A James Beard semifinalist chef runs the kitchen.

  83. Some rooms look directly across the street at the face of Busch Stadium, which tells you exactly who books this hotel and how they feel about the Cardinals. Live! by Loews is a contemporary boutique hotel planted in the middle of Ballpark Village, St. Louis's stadium-anchored entertainment district. Rooms are bright and colorful, with Stearns & Foster mattresses. Two restaurants and a bourbon bar handle most needs, and the rest of the district handles the others.

  86. A 1929 Art Deco skyscraper in Wicker Park, repurposed by Mexico's Grupo Habita into 89 rooms with the brand's signature low-key cool. A Belgian design team carved the old North Tower offices into spare, elegant guest quarters, and the 13th-floor indoor-outdoor bar is the kind of thing that makes you forget you came here on business. Tokyobike rentals at the door nudge you toward the neighborhood rather than the lobby.

  87. Rank 3890. Walrus Rodeo

    Modern Italian

The team behind Boia De runs this wood-fired New American spot a few doors down, with no gas stove in sight. What's surprising is that vegetables do most of the heavy lifting: the lasagna sheets are made from mustard greens, and the menu treats produce with the same care you'd expect from a proper steakhouse. Pizza and some meat round things out, but the room is casual enough that kids and couples share tables without anyone feeling out of place.

  88. A slice counter at the entrance means you can be in and out before the circular bar crowd even finds a seat. Pizza Rock is a big, loud, rock-and-roll pizza shop spread across multiple rooms, with booths for two and communal tables for everyone else. The menu runs several regional styles, and the staff can actually explain the differences. Named among 50 Top Pizza USA's excellent pizzerias, it draws a crowd that didn't want to eat on the Strip.

  89. A massive retro mural reading "Welcome to Leucadia" covers the outside wall, and honestly that sets the tone. Coffee Coffee is a casual coffee shop right on the 101, all big windows and easy light, with seating inside and out. The menu runs the usual espresso route plus an extensive tea list and light breakfast and lunch bites. Surf-town regulars and the unhurried crowd from nearby Bing Surfboards both seem equally at home here.

  92. Three coffee trees grow out of a circular planter in the middle of the room, which tells you something about how seriously this coffee shop takes its atmosphere. The half-moon bar looks borrowed from a boutique hotel, and through the sliding glass doors at the back you can watch the team roasting and cupping while your pour-over is pulled. The menu runs to passionfruit ginger espresso tonics and a sweet corn cream Americano for the adventurous.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
