The Best Places in New York

Eat + Drink + Do, change section
  1. The bouncer-doorman at the entrance of a spa is either performance art or proof that downtown Flatiron runs by its own logic. Rescue Spa is a boutique day spa with a small retail edit, a following among beauty editors who treat their facials like a standing appointment, and a reputation for scented washcloths that provoke an almost suspicious consensus. Vogue named it among the 100 Best Spas in the World.

  2. A bamboo crosshatch ceiling, dismantled in Japan and reassembled beam by beam in a Tribeca basement, sets the tone at Shibui. This spa inside the Greenwich Hotel is modeled on the Japanese onsen tradition: a heated indoor pool, hushed treatment rooms, and towels soaked in warm sake. The whole thing whispers while other spas shout. Vogue named it among the 100 best spas in the world, which tracks when you're wrapped in sake-damp linen under ancient timber.

  3. Rank 78. Sixty Three Clinton

    Modern American

A tasting menu in a quietly understated Lower East Side room that reads far more modest than what comes out of the kitchen. The cooking is precise and composed, moving from a breakfast taco opener to scallop to a short rib and closing on goat milk ice cream. Nothing announces itself loudly, which is somehow the whole point. The service knows the menu cold. It holds a Michelin star.

  5. A wellness retreat in the Hudson Highlands built around the idea that you should earn your massage, The Ranch Hudson Valley runs three- and four-day programs of hard hiking, stripped-down eating, and daily bodywork, colon hydrotherapy included if you're feeling ambitious. Guests arrive having already done 30 days of homework. Named to Vogue's 100 Best Spas in the World, it draws the kind of New Yorkers who treat relaxation like a project with deliverables.

  6. Rank 106. Bar Madonna

    Italian Cocktail Bar

  7. Rank 106. Bar Miller

    Modern Sushi

Bold colors and custom ceramics set the tone at this tiny omakase counter on the Lower East Side, where the whole vibe runs warmer and looser than the austere hush you might expect. The Michelin-starred kitchen leans into North American sourcing, using New York-grown rice and regional fish, with trim and offcuts turned into a house tostada. Local wine, beer, and cider round out a sake list that runs from Brooklyn to Japan.

  8. The comal choricero never stops, and every cut of pig goes in at a different moment so the lard carries the memory of everything that came before it. This tiny taqueria on the Lower East Side does pork and pork only, from snout to cheek to offal, wrapped in homemade tortillas with fresh salsa. Paint buckets double as seats. The chef earned a James Beard nomination, and the Times put it among New York's best new restaurants of 2024.

  9. Rank 106. Crevette

    Mediterranean Seafood

White tablecloths and cream walls give Crevette the look of a classic European brasserie, but the cooking runs along the coasts of Spain and France with enough color to make you forget Manhattan is outside. This is a proper seafood restaurant, lively and full, with the bar pulling its own crowd. The team behind Lord's and Dame keeps the room humming and the martini list pointed.

  10. Rank 106. Dante

    Italian Cocktail Bar

A full page of negronis is either a menu or a dare, and Dante in Greenwich Village has been inviting people to find out for longer than anyone cares to count. This Italian cocktail cafe and all-day aperitivo spot leans into its old-school bones without getting musty about it, pairing the drinks with burrata and charcuterie. Named a James Beard Outstanding Bar semifinalist and ranked on North America's 50 Best Bars list.

  11. Rank 106. Employees Only

    Cocktail Bar

A fortune-teller in the window is not a gimmick so much as a promise about the evening ahead. Past the red velvet curtains, this art deco cocktail bar on Hudson Street runs to carved wood, marble floors, a tin ceiling, and an onyx fireplace, all of it suggesting you should order something serious and stay a while. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, which the regulars probably already knew.

  13. Rank 106. Frevo

    Creative French

A speakeasy entrance in Greenwich Village opens onto a chef's counter tasting menu that pulls from South America, Asia, and wherever else the kitchen feels like going that night. The room is intimate and design-forward, and the team works in full view, which turns dinner into something closer to a performance. It holds a Michelin star. The aged Comté paired with honey ice cream has apparently become the dessert regulars mention unprompted on the way out.

  14. A petite East Village tasting menu spot where the produce comes from local queer farmers and the recipes go straight online for anyone who wants them. Chef Telly Justice runs two menus, one vegan and one omnivore, and Sunday brings a pay-what-you-want seating that fills fast. The kitchen leans hard into seasonal vegetables either way. Food & Wine named Justice a Best New Chef in 2025.

  15. Rank 106. Hav & Mar

    Ethiopian

The bread basket alone, a trio of lentil roti, oat porridge crisp, and teff biscuit, tells you exactly what Marcus Samuelsson and chef Fariyal Abdullahi are doing here. Hav & Mar is a minimalist seafood restaurant in Chelsea where Ethiopian and Swedish traditions fold into each other without apology or explanation. A James Beard Emerging Chef nominee in 2024, Abdullahi runs a room that feels personal rather than concept-driven.

  16. The line down the block on weekends is a reliable feature, and so is the sign that says they've sold out early. Radio Bakery is a small Greenpoint spot where croissants get shaped like Danishes and filled with whatever's good that month, focaccia sandwiches come stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and the brown butter corn cake is the thing to grab for later. Frustrating in all the right ways.

  17. A wall of bread greets you before you see a single pizza, which tells you everything about Dan Richer's priorities. This wood-fired pizzeria in Jersey City runs on long-fermentation dough and a sourcing philosophy that treats New Jersey farms as co-authors, not suppliers. The original dining room, once a theater, still has that weathered-plaster gravitas. Ranked third in the country by 50 Top Pizza, and a James Beard nominee.

  18. Rank 106. Restaurant Yuu

    Contemporary French

Service begins with the lights dropping and curtains parting to reveal the full kitchen brigade standing at attention, which sets the tone for what follows. This is a tasting menu restaurant in Greenpoint where the chef's classic French training and Japanese background meet in a warehouse-scale dining room. Shellfish and proteins carry the menu, and a duck and foie gras pastry feels like a find from a more extravagant era. It holds a Michelin star.

  19. Rank 106. Sofreh

    Persian

Nasim Alikhani spent decades as a home cook in the Iranian diaspora before opening this Persian restaurant in Park Slope at 58, which explains why the food feels like someone's mother finally decided to show the city what she'd been holding back. Whitewashed brick, marble bar, black wood beams. The kitchen is faithful to Persian tradition but loose enough to foam a yogurt or call a pomegranate-marinated rib-eye a kebab. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef New York State.

  20. Rank 106. The Dead Rabbit

    Irish Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar in the Financial District built around the legend of John Morrissey, a bare-knuckle Irish immigrant who ran one of the city's rougher gangs in the 1800s. The menu reads like a graphic novel, each volume dropping the Rabbit into a new era of New York's murkier chapters. The drinks are theatrical without being silly, and the Irish pub downstairs keeps things grounded for anyone who just wants a pint.

  21. Rank 106. The Long Island Bar

    American Diner

The big neon sign out front survived the gap years when nothing else did, and it still draws you in off Atlantic Avenue. This Art Deco bar in Cobble Hill has been around forever, and Toby Cecchini, the bartender who invented the Cosmopolitan, brought it back to life with the booths and floral wallpaper more or less intact. The kitchen does a Reuben and a double-patty burger, but the cocktails are what fill the room on a Tuesday.

  26. Marble-top bar, globe pendants, and coffee-brown tables give this Basque restaurant on the Lower East Side a midcentury feel that somehow never reads as costume. The room runs loud and convivial, the way a good tapas night should, and everything is built for sharing. The wine list leans deep into small Spanish organic and biodynamic producers, which is either very convenient or a very pleasant trap, depending on your evening.

  27. Rank 124. JUA

    Korean

A modern Korean tasting menu tucked near the Flatiron, where the room, all soaring ceilings and low light, hums at the kind of pitch that makes a Tuesday feel like an event. The chef pulls from Korean tradition without treating it as a costume, running dry-aged fish and wood-fired lamb alongside dishes rooted in the peninsula. It holds a Michelin star, and the room on any given night suggests the regulars already knew that.

  28. Rank 124. Kora

    Filipino Bakery

  29. Velvet booths, Christofle cutlery, and a marble bar set the tone at this French tasting menu restaurant on a coveted TriBeCa corner. The chef spent years in Joël Robuchon kitchens, and the cooking shows it: classical French technique pulled toward Japanese sensibility, refined without the stiffness that usually tags along. Servers in fitted suits orbit the room with something close to telepathy. One Michelin star.

  30. Missy Robbins runs an open kitchen inside a former car body shop in East Williamsburg, which tells you something about the bones of the room before a single plate arrives. Lilia is the kind of Italian pasta restaurant where everything is handmade and the mafaldini with pink peppercorns has turned regulars into a kind of informal cult. The New York Times gave it three stars, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed.

  31. Rank 124. Lord's

    British

A nose-to-tail British bistro in the Village where the duck-stuffed cabbage arrives large enough to feed a small party. The team behind Dame brought the same easy warmth here: cozy banquettes, unhurried service, and bar stools held for walk-ins even on a packed night. The menu leans into hearty English classics with just enough creative wobble to stay interesting. Food & Wine named the chef a Best New Chef in 2023, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed.

  35. Rank 124. Torien

    Japanese

Blacked-out windows and a buzzer at street level set the tone before you've eaten a bite. Pull back the curtain and you're at the counter of a yakitori omakase, a NoHo sibling to Tokyo's Torishiki, where the chef works skewers over binchotan charcoal with the focus of someone who has decided this is the only thing worth doing. The smoke becomes part of the room. One Michelin star.

  36. Rank 124. Ursula

    New Mexican Bakery

  37. Rank 139. Angel’s Share

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

The unmarked door on the second floor of a Japanese restaurant looks exactly like where a broom lives, which is precisely the point. Angel's Share is a speakeasy-style cocktail bar with booth banquettes, bare brick, velvet curtains, and lighting set to confession-booth low. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, and the room feels like it has always known that. Come early, come two, and find the door before someone else needs the mop.

  38. Rank 139. Bánh Anh Em

    Vietnamese

The line forms on Third Avenue before the door unlocks, which tells you most of what you need to know about this no-reservations Vietnamese neighborhood spot in the East Village. The baguettes for the banh mi come out of the oven fresh, and the pho runs on housemade noodles. The New York Times named the banh cuon among its favorite dishes of the year, and Michelin handed it a Bib Gourmand.

  39. Rank 139. Bar Goto

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

The Sakura Martini, a sake-and-gin affair finished with a salted cherry blossom, is the thing people come back for at this tiny, warmly lit cocktail bar on Eldridge Street. Kenta Goto spent years at Pegu Club before opening this place, and the short menu of original drinks leans on Japanese ingredients, house infusions, and a quieter kind of precision. Small enough that nobody is a stranger for long.

    Korean

A marble counter with built-in grills running quietly all evening sets the mood at this intimate tasting counter tucked behind Oiji Mi. The kitchen leans hard into luxury, stacking wagyu, uni, caviar, and truffle onto contemporary Korean courses without much apology. A dry-aging chamber sits in full view, so you watch dinner aging while you eat it. One Michelin star.

  41. Rank 139. Bong

    Khmer Cambodian

Reservations at this tiny Crown Heights Cambodian restaurant evaporate fast enough that "arrive early and hope" is a legitimate strategy. Shared plates and a high-energy counter setup make it better with four than two. A James Beard semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, it pulls off the thing where every dish on the table disappears before anyone meant it to.

  42. Rank 139. Chambers

    Wine Bar

Pascaline Lepeltier, one of a handful of Master Sommeliers in the world, built the wine list here, and it shows: back vintages, unexpected producers, prices that don't require a quiet moment alone with your bank app. The food runs from composed salads to fresh pasta, all of it seasonal and sharper than the "wine bar snacks" framing might suggest. A James Beard nominee for its beverages program, and sitting at number 29 on the Times' 100 Best list.

  43. The Art Deco lobby of 70 Pine Street leads into a dining room with soaring ceilings, marble floors, and windows that make you feel like you're eating inside a postcard. This is Michelin-starred fine dining that doesn't take itself too seriously, with a long bar, an upbeat playlist, and a kitchen running technique-driven Contemporary American cooking that somehow reads as approachable rather than intimidating. The crowd dresses up just enough to feel like they belong.

This Neapolitan pizza shop off Times Square is the New York branch of a Naples institution, run by a chef who grew up in the family craft. 47. A converted farmhouse in North Salem with sweeping views of actual countryside, which somehow makes the tasting menu feel earned rather than theatrical. This is a Michelin-starred modern French fine dining room with very few tables, run by a husband-and-wife team whose roots are in the south of France. The cooking is precise and quietly confident, and dessert gets its own moment to shine. Esquire named the Vesper martini among the finest in America, which is a strange fact about a farmhouse, and a good one.

The conceit here is a Korean tasting menu built around rolls, which sounds like a fusion experiment but plays out more like a revelation. Chef Sungchul Shim, who built his reputation just down the street at Kochi, runs a counter where chefs work in full view on every side, wrapping pristine fish and rice in seaweed at a deliberate pace. 53. Rank 139. Paradise Lost

    Cocktail Bar

The name comes from Milton, and the bar takes the premise seriously: this is a tropical hellscape, not a luau. Paradise Lost is a tiki bar in the East Village that keeps the piña coladas and mai tais but drops the cheerful kitsch for something a little more Beelzebub. The décor leans sinister in ways that reward a second look. Esquire named it one of the best bars in America in 2024, and the Spirited Awards shortlisted it for Best New U.S. Cocktail Bar.

  57. A Michelin-starred tempura tasting counter in Murray Hill where the chef uses a blend of sesame and cottonseed oils and keeps the batter deliberately thin, letting the ingredient do the talking. Counter seats give you a front-row view of the whole process. The menu moves with the seasons, running from sashimi through a procession of fried courses, and closing with tencha, a broth that turns out to be a quietly convincing argument for ending a meal with soup.

The Grill is a fine dining steakhouse running an all-American menu of classics, the kind of place where the suits at the next table never glance at the prices. Grandiose is the right word, and the kitchen leans into it without apology.

  62. Rank 139. Tsukimi

    Japanese

A kaiseki counter in the East Village built around a single idea: moonlight. The name translates to "moon viewing," and the room takes that literally, with illuminated ceramic shelves and mirrored panels catching every gleam. The seasonal tasting menu moves with the kind of quiet confidence that doesn't need to announce itself, and the sake list, ordered à la carte, is the right move. Tsukimi holds a Michelin star.

Thomas Chen's East Village fine dining room sits behind bay windows with a backlit bar and purple seats that somehow avoid feeling precious. The menu moves between Asian traditions and classical technique in ways that feel considered rather than calculated, and the Michelin-starred kitchen earns its star without announcing it at every turn. Service knows the food cold but doesn't lecture. A neighborhood room that quietly does serious work.

    Modern Italian

Part restaurant, part charcuterie counter, Augustine's Salumeria is a relaxed modern Italian spot in Mamaroneck where the menu leans hard on Westchester farms and local fishermen. The kitchen turns out Italian-leaning dishes alongside nightly specials that change the calculation every time. The room feels like a neighborhood place that happens to cook with serious intention, which is a comfortable combination.

Plush banquettes, glittering chandeliers, and mid-century classics on the menu make Carbone feel like a fever dream of 1960s New York that never cooled down. The rigatoni alla vodka is famous for a reason, the prices are serious, and getting a reservation requires planning well in advance.

    Traditional Southern Thai

Rattan light fixtures and dark wood set the mood at this Hell's Kitchen shared-plates spot, where the kitchen focuses on Southern Thai cooking. The menu runs through curries, noodle dishes, and seafood plates that lean traditional rather than trend-chasing. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod. Pre-theater crowds from nearby find it fits the timeline without feeling rushed.

    Homestyle Korean

Soft tofu is the anchor of the menu at this homestyle Korean restaurant in Koreatown, which makes a quiet case for everything that isn't barbecue. Bubbling casseroles, spicy stews, pajeon, bibimbap, and cod roe omelet fill out a menu that reads like someone's grandmother wrote it. The dining room is wood tables and close quarters, warm enough that you forget you're on 35th Street. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on the New York Times list of the city's 100 best.

  71. There's a piano near the door, and on weekends kids actually play it while their families work through lazy breakfasts nearby. Cocina Consuelo is a supper club in Harlem built from a pandemic-era Mexican pop-up, and the home-cooking warmth masks some real kitchen ambition: masa pancakes from heirloom corn, birria over bone marrow. The New York Times named it one of the city's best new restaurants in 2025, and also called out the masa pancake among the top dishes of 2024.

The corn husk meringue has been on the menu so long it's practically load-bearing. Cosme is a fine dining Modern Mexican room in the Flatiron, dark and handsome, with a serious bar up front pouring seasonal cocktails and roomy tables behind it where the menu runs short and focused. Chef Enrique Olvera put this kitchen on the map, and it remains very much a scene, for better and occasionally for worse.

    Seafood

A quaint seafood restaurant on MacDougal where the wine list is sorted by whether you'd rather be James Bond or Austin Powers, and that tracks with everything else here. The fish and chips, a hake fillet in lacey batter, is what put the place on the map when it was still a pop-up. Korean

The one decision you make at this Korean diner on Allen Street is which protein you want. Everything else arrives whether you're ready or not: rotating banchan, crispy jeon, soy-cured shrimp, the works, with refills waved over without asking. The whole thing costs $36, lunch is $19, and a coffee from the machine by the door is on the house on the way out. It's modeled on Korea's taxi driver restaurants, which is exactly the energy.

    Spanish Wine Bar

The team behind Oxalis opened this Clinton Hill wine bar as a casual second act, and the kitchen takes it as seriously as the cellar. Both lean Spanish: natural wines from small producers, simple seafood, grilled toast, and vegetable plates that hold their own. The bar and open kitchen anchor a cozy room that fills up fast, so arrive early or embrace the wait with a glass of something zippy.

  80. Marcus Samuelsson's Harlem soul food restaurant has had a standing reservation from the neighborhood since it opened, and the fried chicken alone explains why. The room runs loud and lively, with live music most nights pushing the vibe closer to a party than a dinner. Bitters are both the obsession and the inventory at this tiny East Village cocktail bar, which also sells an overwhelming wall of the stuff to take home. Sapphire-blue velvet booths, caramel leather, wood floors, and a chandelier situation that would make a Gilded Age banker feel underdressed: Andrew Carmellini's fine dining room inside the Fifth Avenue Hotel is maximalist and means it. The kitchen leans Mediterranean-Italian, with dishes that have a way of arriving as formal little compositions. 86. Rank 188. Café Kestrel

    Unfussy European Bistro

A tiny Red Hook corner spot where the menu fits on one page and the fried halloumi, served warm over honey, made the New York Times list of top dishes. Café Kestrel runs pan-European with a French lean: terrines, duck confit, a seafood plate finished with gaufrettes. The room is casual enough for a Tuesday but pulled-together enough that you won't feel underdressed ordering dessert, which the staff will gently insist upon anyway.

  87. Eighty-two floors above Lower Manhattan, this Forbes Five Star hotel puts you a block from the World Trade Center with views that sweep across the Oculus and the harbor beyond. The neighborhood has quietly become a proper destination, with Brookfield Place and the Westfield shops within easy reach and decent restaurants in every direction. It suits the finance crowd and the tourists who want the postcard skyline without midtown noise.

  88. Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Jonathan Benno share the kitchen at this fine dining room on Park Avenue, where floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with enough light to make the room feel both grand and surprisingly calm. The menu roams freely from French to Italian to Asian without apology, landing each time with precise technique. The New York Times and Esquire both named it among their best new restaurants in 2024.

  89. On some nights, the menu at this tiny Lower East Side wine bar runs almost entirely on toast, sometimes composed, sometimes a hunk of baguette left for you to figure out. The kitchen gestures toward France and Vietnam without committing to either, and the eggs mayo spiked with Maggi and trout roe has caused some embarrassing arguments about egg dishes. Stools, minimal lighting, a short pours list. Bon Appétit named it one of America's best new restaurants.

    British Steakhouse

The British steakhouse import near Gramercy that made New York carnivores feel slightly underdressed. The room leans into a warm, vintage-century-club atmosphere, and the menu runs from serious cuts to the kind of British comfort food that sneaks up on you. The bar program is no afterthought, landing a regional Spirited Award and a James Beard semifinalist nod for beverages. A New York Times Critic's Pick, and reliably easier to love than the places that take themselves more seriously.

  91. The ceiling is covered in thousands of clay churchwarden pipes, each one claimed by a regular who never came back to collect it. Keens is an old-school Manhattan steakhouse in Midtown, all dark wood and white tablecloths, and the mutton chop alone has landed on the New York Times list of the city's defining dishes. The porterhouse is USDA Prime, dry-aged in-house, and broiled without apology. It sits at number 68 on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

Fourteen seats around a charcoal counter in the back of Chinatown's Canal Arcade, where every course of the yakitori omakase is built around a chicken that gives up everything. Plastic stools, plastic tables, and a fermented shrimp paste so funky it has its own gravitational pull, this is a Vietnamese restaurant on the Lower East Side that draws a crowd large enough to colonize the sidewalk and occasionally a neighboring storefront. The menu runs through stuffed snails, grilled intestines, and frog sausage with the tiny bones crushed in. The New York Times placed it 26th on their 100 Best Restaurants in New York City list.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
