  2. Rank 3401. Chante Bise

    Modern French

A farmhouse restaurant outside Clermont-Ferrand where the lunch menu is recited aloud rather than handed over, which sets the tone nicely. The cooking sits somewhere between tradition and a quiet ambition, so stuffed cabbage might arrive with braised cuttlefish and a citrus-laced jus. The room is cosy and the welcome is warm, and desserts are taken more seriously than the casual country setting might suggest.

  4. Rank 3401. Chartron

    Modern French

A family restaurant in a village that draws crowds every summer for its Bach festival, which is a very specific claim to fame. The kitchen leans on the region's larder, duck foie gras and Provençal lamb alongside freshwater fish from nearby rivers, with truffles folded in when the season allows. A handful of guestrooms upstairs makes it easy to stay for dinner and mean it.

  7. Sitting inside a turreted neo-Romantic château ringed by Saint-Émilion vines, this hotel restaurant splits the mood between a relaxed bistro lunch and a more considered dinner menu when the kitchen shifts up a gear. The terrace, with its views across the vineyard, makes the case for lingering over a second glass better than any sommelier could. Art Nouveau-inspired interiors handle the rainy days.

  9. Rank 3401. Chavant

    Classical French

The coffered ceiling, wainscoting, and crisp white tablecloths tell you everything about what kind of dining room this is before the menu arrives. Chavant is a classic French restaurant in a village south of Grenoble, the sort of family house that has been around forever and runs on the conviction that the guest is always right, enforced warmly by Madame Chavant herself. The kitchen updates the old repertoire with a sure hand and no apologies.

  10. An open kitchen anchors this compact modern bistro in Pigalle, where the two founders both came up through William Ledeuil's Ze Kitchen Galerie. The cooking leans seasonal and vegetable-forward without making a fuss about it, and the wine service gets the same careful attention as the food. Cozy without being cramped, and friendly without being performative about it.

    The awards

  11. Rank 3401. Chère Amie

    Traditional French

A grand old Prussian post office in the Neustadt quarter, now a spacious brasserie where the whole conceit, name, decor and menu card design, plays on the art of letter writing. The kitchen leans classical: sauerkraut, beef tartare, bouchée à la reine, lobster bisque. It's the kind of place where the room does half the work, and the traditional French menu handles the rest without asking too much of your wallet.

    Modern French

A honey-coloured Bordeaux stone building in the suburbs, where the chef's partner runs the room with warmth and the kitchen turns out precise, creative bistronomy with a light touch. Set menus at lunch and dinner keep things focused, and the cooking shows clear classical training applied to quietly inventive combinations. The garden veranda is a good place to land on a warm afternoon.

  17. The family pig farm and the French rugby team share a connection here, which tells you this is not a typical farm-to-table pitch. Two brothers run this traditional restaurant on the Dupont estate in the Pyrenean foothills: one farms the Noir de Bigorre pigs, one plays scrum-half for les Bleus. The menu leans into both, with pork prepared every which way and a grandfather's duck casserole that the whole table will order.

  24. Rank 3401. Chez Mosse

    Savoyard

A colorful village house on the square, with a terrace shaded enough to make you linger, shelters this modern bistro in the Haute-Savoie countryside. The chef grew up here and came back to stay close to the farmers, and the cooking shows it: seasonal, vegetable-forward, quietly eco-conscious without making a fuss about any of that. The room is simple and unpretentious, which suits the food perfectly.

  25. Rank 3401. Chez Pimousse

    Modern French

A bistro-style dining room on the Saône with old wooden tables and dried grasses, where the chef-owner greets regulars by name and occasionally helps with the service himself. The cooking is modern French with surprise menus built around whatever looks sharpest at the market. When the weather cooperates, the terrace under the plane trees, with Vieux Lyon across the water, is where you want to be.

  26. A cosy little bistro tucked inside a former betting shop, where the blackboard menu changes daily and guests fetch their own bottle from the wine cellar, whether for the table or to take home. The chef works the counter in a checked shirt and blue apron, photos of old kitchen colleagues on the walls around him. Classic French lunch cooking, the kind that doesn't need explaining.

  27. The wide glass front of this modern dining room in a quiet Ile-de-France village lets you see right in, exposed brick and a few plants, which is a fair preview of what the kitchen does: precise modern cuisine without performance. The chef lets the ingredients carry the weight, so a scallop stays a scallop and a well-raised Landes chicken stays the point. A relaxed room that takes the cooking quietly seriously.

  28. Rank 3401. Ciasa Mia

    Contemporary Italian

Stone walls and wooden beams on a quiet street near the Pantheon give this small Italian contemporary restaurant the warm hush of a Dolomites chalet dropped into the 5th arrondissement. The team is an Italian couple: he cooks, she works the room in traditional alpine dress. Dinner comes as a surprise set menu built around local ingredients with a pleasantly bitter edge. Bring someone you trust enough to hand over the ordering.

    The awards

  29. Rank 3401. Ciel à Table

    Modern Mediterranean

A glass-roof dining room attached to a pink brick building on the village church square, with a chestnut and lime tree shading the patio outside. This is a modern restaurant where the kitchen stays visible and the cooking leans toward the contemporary, the kind of place that serves pigeon two ways without making it feel like a big deal. The room is bright, the service reads attentive rather than stiff, and Toulouse is only a short drive away.

  31. Rank 3401. Clos d'Astorg

    Traditional French

The words "cuisine au beurre" painted right on the façade make the kitchen's priorities clear before you've touched the door. This is a Paris bistro of the old-school persuasion: mosaic floors, stone walls, white tablecloths, and a menu built around leek vinaigrette, onglet, and boudin noir. The stuffed cabbage is the house signature, a properly generous thing wrapped in a pale green leaf.

  38. A husband-and-wife team runs this modern restaurant in Dax, where the kitchen splits neatly in two: he handles savory, she owns dessert. Both trained in Michelin-starred kitchens before settling here, and the food shows it, landing somewhere between regional loyalty and a broader curiosity, local duck and Bigorre pork nudged along by yuzu, tamarind, and coffee. The room is focused and deliberate, the kind of place that takes the cooking seriously without making you feel tested.

  40. A sunny terrace in the Alps and a kitchen that takes the region seriously, this modern restaurant in Grand-Bornand moves through the seasons with real commitment. The chef leans on local farms and mountain forage, so a velvety green pea soup lands next to braised pork cheeks cooked in regional red wine. The kind of place that makes the mountain air feel like an excuse to order more courses.

  41. Rank 3401. Coretta

    Mexican-influenced Bistro

The treetop views over Martin Luther King park set the mood before the food arrives. Coretta is a casual modern restaurant in the Clichy-Batignolles district, named for Coretta Scott King, where the kitchen lands somewhere between Parisian bistronomy and Mexican flair, with edible flowers and sprouts adding color to plates built from local ingredients. The oak-lined room feels relaxed enough that nobody's performing, which in Paris is its own achievement.

  43. A former pastry chef running a bistro means the dessert course gets taken as seriously as everything else, which at Côté Jardin translates to a caramelised mille-feuille that makes the savory menu work harder to keep up. Tucked into the residential Le Petit Juas neighborhood above the glitter of Cannes, this is a cheerful, unfussy spot with Mediterranean cooking and prices that would surprise anyone who just came from the Croisette.

  44. Rank 3401. Côté Mer

    Seafood

The fish of the day gets announced out loud here, which sets the tone for this seafood restaurant on Cancale's port. The terrace looks straight out over the bay toward Mont Saint Michel, and the menu leans hard into the region, running from local oysters and abalone to saltmarsh lamb. The owners also run a simpler spot next door for when you'd rather not commit to a full sit-down with a view like that.

A compact wine shop and restaurant in Vieux Lille where two friends, one a veteran of Rozó and the other France's Young Sommelier of 2021, run a short, unfussy menu out of an open kitchen surrounded by vintage furniture. 51. A crepe shop in Saint-Malo where the buckwheat galettes tilt toward Brittany's weirder pantry: pork tongue, andouille from Dinan, Breton trout with goat's cheese and lemon. The hors d'oeuvre side runs to chili butter with raw cocoa nibs, which is either alarming or thrilling depending on your mood. Ciders and wines are natural, most ingredients are organic, and the whole small room feels like someone's sincere love letter to the region rather than a tourist concession to it.

  53. A covered terrace looking out over open fields in the Rennes suburbs sets the scene at this modern French restaurant, where the room is quiet and the cooking is precise without being fussy. A weekday set lunch keeps the bill sensible, making it an easy choice for the neighborhood regulars who already know to book ahead.

  55. The terraced kitchen garden does double duty here, feeding both the view and the plate at this small restaurant tucked into an old village house above the Lauragais plain. Two chefs who came up through Toulouse's fine dining scene now run a quietly ambitious room where the cooking skews plant-forward and precise. The veranda looks out toward the Pyrenees, which makes lingering over lunch feel less indulgent and more like common sense.

  56. Named for the famous Lyonnais food critic, this intimate modern dining room runs a set lunch at wallet-friendly prices and a multi-course tasting menu come evening. The 1970s pop decor and vinyl soundtrack set the mood before the food even arrives at this lively Pigalle bistro. Dishes come in flexible portions, the idea being that you order a few and share, or don't, depending on your mood and company. The wine list runs to 150 labels and the service stays resolutely unbuttoned. A Michelin Selected Restaurant where the room tends to be loud in the best way by eight.

  58. Rank 3401. Dame Augustine

    Modern French

A veranda-style dining room with the feel of a neighbourhood brasserie, Dame Augustine is the more relaxed sibling project of a Paris chef with a deft hand for unexpected pairings. Set menus keep things approachable, including a lunch deal that the 13th arrondissement has quietly taken to heart. The cooking moves between earthy and bright, with combinations that surprise without performing. Casual enough for a weeknight, considered enough that you'll actually think about it afterward.

A 14th-century stone building in a medieval village, with a terrace looking out over the garden, sets the stage for a quietly serious modern French restaurant. The room is elegant but the vibe stops well short of stiff, which is a harder balance to strike than it looks.

  76. Rank 3401. Drouant

    French

The Goncourt Prize jury has handed down its verdict in this room every year for over a century, which makes Drouant one of the more consequential dining rooms in French letters. It's a plush, old-school brasserie on place Gaillon, the kind where vol-au-vent and sole meunière feel completely correct. 80. The ceramics on every table were thrown by the chef's mother, and the vegetables came from his father's garden, so this creative restaurant in a restored château outside Lyon is nothing if not a family affair. Traditional Basque

A white building with green shutters in the Basque hills, where a British chef and his partner grill whole fish and txuletas over a wood fire on a traditional parilla. This is a casual restaurant where the cooking runs deep on Spanish Basque instincts, from silky coq au lait to house-made sausage, with ice cream churned on site. Unpretentious enough to feel like someone's kitchen, precise enough to make you wonder how they pulled it off.

A former garage on Avenue Parmentier, now a clean-lined loft with counter seats and an open kitchen, where every bottle on the wine list comes from Alsace. This small restaurant rethinks the region without the rustic props: sauerkraut turns up in crispy cromesquis or alongside house-made boudin blanc, and the whole menu exists to show off those wines. A lawyer opened it, which explains a certain precision to how the argument is laid out.

    Modern Mediterranean

A Japanese kamado, a wood-fired stove from another tradition entirely, sits at the center of this compact modern restaurant in Sète, where everything on the menu passes through fire before it reaches the table. The chef trained under some serious names in the Languedoc before landing here, and the cooking shows it without showing off. Southern French wines, guided by his partner in the dining room, keep things local.

  93. Parked across from Les Deux Magots on Saint-Germain, this ground-floor Italian brasserie runs at a pace that feels more Milan than Paris, which the regulars seem to appreciate. The team moves fast, the menu holds every canonical Italian classic you'd want, and the kitchen executes them without flourish or apology. Good linguine alle vongole, proper tiramisu, the kind of place where the food does exactly what it promises.

  97. Rank 3401. En Tandem

    Modern French

A modern bistro in a small medieval town where the ruins of Montrichard Fortress loom nearby, En Tandem is run by two women who keep things close to home in the most literal sense. The kitchen leans on local mushrooms and Touraine pork, prepared with a looseness that feels more generous than precise. The room has a rustic edge under its bistro polish, and the service moves with it.

Half-timbered walls and exposed stone set the scene at this modern restaurant on one of Honfleur's prettiest squares. The name translates loosely as "between land and sea," which is a fair summary of how the kitchen thinks: seasonal dishes move between meat and fish without committing to either. A small terrace opens when the weather cooperates, which in Normandy is its own kind of gamble.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
