  6. Rank 1706. Bar 1802

    Cocktail Bar

The bar inside Hotel Monte Cristo is named for the year Alexandre Dumas was born, and the obsession runs deep: Dumas descended from Haitian rum producers, so the cocktail bar stocks somewhere around 1,600 rums, from molasses-based blends to rhums agricoles to house-spiced bottles. The Latin Quarter setting, the literary conceit, the frankly absurd rum cellar: it all holds together better than it has any right to.

  7. Rank 1707. Le Pantruche

    Modern French

The name comes from 19th-century slang for Paris, which sets the tone: this is a neighbourhood bistro in the 9th that leans into a worn-in, vintage look without feeling like a theme park. The chef runs a short, seasonal menu in the bistronomic mode, with a Grand Marnier soufflé that turns up regularly and earns its place. A red awning shades a few pavement tables. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  8. Rank 1708. Bar Hemingway

    Cocktail Bar

Tucked into a back corner of the Ritz near the Rue Cambon entrance, Bar Hemingway is a famously tiny cocktail bar, one room and a half, with photographs of its most celebrated regular covering the walls. The crowd runs international and polished, which gives the place the feel of a very expensive waiting room. The cocktails are priced accordingly, though nobody here seems to be doing the math.

  9. Rank 1708. Castor Club

    Cocktail Bar

A rough-hewn wooden façade drops into the sixth arrondissement like a Canadian trapper's hut that took a wrong turn at the Seine. Inside, this cocktail bar goes cozy and narrow, all dark wood and deep green velvet, with vintage American music doing the heavy lifting on weekdays. Come the weekend, a DJ takes over downstairs, and the mood shifts accordingly. Cocktail bars on the Left Bank are scarce enough that this one doesn't need to try very hard to stand out, yet it does anyway.

  10. Rank 1710. Kodawari Ramen - Yokochō

    Japanese Noodle Shop

The wheat for the noodles is grown and milled in-house, which is either very dedicated or a little obsessive, and probably both. This ramen shop on rue Mazarine dresses itself up as a Tokyo back alley, lanterns and all, and somehow it doesn't feel embarrassing. Broths run from clean shio to deeper shoyu, and the black sesame kurugoma bowl is the one regulars keep coming back for. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Go early or late; midday it fills fast.

  11. This is a small, family-run Korean restaurant in Saint-Germain that treats the cuisine as something more than barbecue or street food, and it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The kimchi arrives mounded on a handmade-looking ceramic plate, polite and slightly proud. A lone chef works the kitchen, so solo diners can take a bar seat and watch plates leave one at a time, while couples and groups get tables with some breathing room.

  12. Le Mary Celeste is a Marais wine-and-cocktail bar where the oysters arrive faster than anyone can decide on a bottle of natural wine, and the English you hear at the next table is not an accident. It comes from the group behind Candelaria, so the small plates, deviled eggs and tartare among them, are built for passing around. It has held a spot on the Spirited Awards Top 10 Nominee list for best international restaurant bar.

  13. The bar is behind a door at the back of a taqueria on Rue de Saintonge, which is the kind of entrance that never gets old. Once through, it's a candle-lit, intentionally scuffed cocktail bar where the soundtrack runs loud enough that you're not whispering like you're supposed to. Perch at the bar to watch the bartenders work, or sink into a couch if someone hasn't beaten you to it. The Pinnacle Guide awarded it one Pin.

  14. A wood-lined dining room in the center of the village, run by a chef with serious fine-dining pedigree who has chosen to cook seasonal mountain produce rather than perform with it. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, and the menu reads like a love letter to whatever's good nearby: local goat's cheese, long-cooked pork, herbs from up the road. Modern French cooking, unhurried and precise, at prices that don't require a second mortgage.

  17. Rank 1714. Accentué

    Pan-Asian

A former neighborhood bistro in the shifting Gerland quarter, now a bright, contemporary space where the chef, trained in French technique and shaped by an Indian upbringing and a New Zealand detour, pulls spices from across several continents into a single, coherent meal. The cooking is creative without being anxious about it. A small courtyard out back makes the whole thing feel a little like a secret. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  18. Rank 1714. Adami

    Italian

A long counter runs the length of this small Italian pasta restaurant near Pigalle, where you can watch the kitchen roll and plate while you eat. The look is stripped-back and modern rather than red-checkered, and the menu leans into sharing. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the cooking is sharp and unfussy, with the kind of gnocchi that makes the table go quiet.

    Mexican

The open kitchen is visible from the pedestrian street before you've even opened the door, which sets the tone: nothing here is hidden or fussy. This casual fusion restaurant in Bourg-en-Bresse is run by a French-Mexican couple, both trained pastry-makers, who cook French ingredients through a Mexican lens, mole, macha salsa, salsa verde and all. The desserts land with particular conviction. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  22. Rank 1714. Akashon

    Modern Brasserie

The cable car to 3,842 meters leaves from right outside, which sets the bar for what you're doing here. Akashon is the modern brasserie inside the Héliopic Hotel, with untreated wood, granite, and a mountain-view terrace that earns its keep. The cooking runs more ambitious than the setting suggests, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand confirms it. During the UTMB ultramarathon, the menu pivots to feed the runners, which tells you something about the crowd.

  24. Rank 1714. ANTO

    Savoyard

A chef from France's southwest who fell hard for the Alps runs this modern restaurant tucked into Annecy's old town, where whitewashed walls, wood, and stone set a quietly handsome stage. The cooking shuttles between Savoie and the regions he grew up around, landing somewhere unexpected: duck with Abondance cheese, chocolate with piquillo pepper. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  25. Rank 1714. Art'zain

    Basque

The name means "shepherd" in Basque, a nod to the owner's father that sets the tone for everything that follows. This farm-to-table restaurant sits in a converted village barn, old rafters and stone walls intact, softened by furniture from Basque craftsman Alki. The menu chases the season hard, leaning on local producers, and has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the effort. Irissarry is small, but people find it.

    Alsatian Bistro

A winstub in the old Strasbourg sense, where the menu leans more Alsace bistro than museum piece: game terrine from the Ried, pikeperch with beurre noisette, a vol au vent that means it. The chef also runs Au Vieux Couvent in Rhinau, and the wine recommendations reflect that pedigree. Regulars have known this address for decades, and they're not sharing the secret loudly. 30. The trout comes from a stream up the road, the lamb from the valley just past that, and the coffee is roasted in a village you probably drove through on the way. This small modern restaurant in the Pyrenean town of Argelès-Gazost runs on an almost aggressively local pantry, with the chef turning those hyper-regional ingredients into polished, inventive plates. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place that makes a detour feel obvious in hindsight.

  32. Rank 1714. Au Petit Relais

    Traditional French

A roadside village restaurant where the Bresse and Jura regions meet on the plate, and the wine list runs to over 800 bottles, many from Jura. The same couple has run this cosy, traditional dining room for what feels like forever, and the cooking leans into that confidence: local snails and Bresse chicken alongside scallops and turbot, all done without fuss. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place that quietly makes the case for driving country roads.

  34. A hotel-restaurant sitting in the shadow of Hambye Abbey's medieval ruins, this is the kind of Norman country dining room that fills with locals who could walk here. The chef trained in-house, left for bigger kitchens, and came back, which usually means something. The room has a fireplace in winter and a terrace over the Sienne in summer, and the cooking leans classical without making a fuss about it. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  37. A Pyrenean village this high up earns its isolation, and the young couple running this auberge on the central square seems to know it. The cooking leans into the region hard, with a garbure that reads like a Gascon greatest hits, then pivots to something more contemporary when the mood suits. The wine list runs to nearly 500 bottles, which is an ambitious number for a village you have to climb to reach. Michelin awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  42. A stone-walled inn on a quiet village street that has been feeding travelers since horses needed changing. The kitchen turns out bold, seasonal French cooking with a Michelin Bib Gourmand to its name, and the dining room threads antique details through something a little more polished than you'd expect. Lunch runs simpler and cheaper, dinner more serious. A handful of rooms upstairs means you can skip the drive home entirely.

  45. Rank 1714. Aux 2 K

    Modern French

Roasted pigeon with smoked eel and shallots in a salmis sauce tells you everything about the kitchen's ambitions. This snug modern French bistro in the 9th is the project of two alumni from some of Paris's most demanding kitchens, one on savory, one on pastry, splitting the labor the way it should be done. The Bib Gourmand signals that the cooking punches well above the price, which in this neighborhood stays refreshingly sane.

  46. Rank 1714. Aux 3 Capitaines

    Traditional French

A village restaurant on the banks of the Moselle where the menu reads like a love letter to Lorraine, pike quenelles, free-range poultry with morels, ham braised in Auxerrois sauce. The dining room has been freshened up and there's a quiet terrace out back, but the cooking stays resolutely old-school and generous. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. 47. Rank 1714. Aux Bons Enfants

    Provençal Mediterranean

Cash only, no phone until recently, fourth generation in the kitchen: Aux Bons Enfants has been doing things its own way for a very long time. This snug Provençal bistro on rue Meynadier sources everything from Forville Market a few doors down, which keeps the stuffed vegetables, braised beef cheeks, and homemade gnocchi tasting like someone's grandmother made them, which is more or less accurate. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  48. Rank 1714. Aux Plumes

    Japanese

A Japanese chef running a small neighborhood bistro in the 14th, changing the menu weekly and sourcing close to home. The cooking is French in spirit but with a sharper eye for contrast, sweet against sour, rich against bright, in combinations you wouldn't have thought to order but end up finishing fast. Lunch draws a crowd that knows to show up, since the price makes the whole thing feel slightly stolen. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  49. A converted coaching inn across from a medieval castle, which sets the scene nicely for a modern cuisine restaurant earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand. A chef and sommelier run it together, and that partnership shows: local produce and fresh fish get careful treatment in the kitchen, while the wine pours come with actual thought behind them. Nearly everything on the table is made in-house, bread from a local baker being the one cheerful exception.

  50. Rank 1714. Baca'v - Boulogne

    Modern Bistro

A sibling to a Paris address, this modern bistro in Boulogne-Billancourt earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand with the kind of cooking that makes you feel like someone's grandmother grew up in Limousin and went to culinary school. The chef leans into bistro classics, vol-au-vent, pâté en croûte, braised cabbage, done with enough care to feel personal rather than nostalgic. Large picture windows keep it from feeling like a cave, which is more than most bistros manage.

  52. Bagatelle is the bistro side of a grander operation, serving modern French cooking through the week in a contemporary dining room that the fine dining restaurant reclaims on weekends. On sunny days, the garden terrace opens up. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

A wine bar in Saint-Péray where the menu shifts by the hour: a simple lunch formula at noon, shared tapas and platters in the evening, and a more composed set menu that arrives somewhere between the two. 75. Buckwheat galettes made from organic, locally sourced ingredients at a crêperie right on Cancale's working oyster port. The concept has an unlikely origin story: the owner first took Breton galettes to Tokyo, opened several Japanese locations, then brought the whole thing back home. Fillings run from traditional to spider crab and Saint Malo wakame seaweed. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and a table here most days requires a reservation.

  76. A crêperie in a converted chalet steps from the village church, where Brittany and the Alps have quietly worked out a truce. Buckwheat galettes come with Reblochon or raw-milk raclette, and Breton oysters share the menu with a solid cider list. 77. A crêperie near the Marché des Lices from the chef who, in a move no one saw coming, spent years bringing Breton galettes to Japan, and brought a Japanese sensibility back with him. The room is modern and industrial with an open kitchen, and the buckwheat here is stone-ground, the eggs organic, the sourcing the kind you'd expect from someone who made a whole philosophy of the thing. The open kitchen at the back of this Left Bank bistro is shaped like a pod, which explains the name and adds a retro-science-fiction touch to the green banquettes and vintage lamps. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for traditional French home cooking: roast chicken, floating island with salted butter caramel, the kind of food that makes you wonder why anyone bothers with anything fancier. A few bar seats up front fill fast with regulars who know the drill.

    Wine Bar

Pale wood, shelves of wine, and a counter that keeps things close, this is the casual sibling to CIBO across the street, a wine bar that takes food seriously enough to earn a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Lunch runs as a single seasonal set menu; evenings open up into sharing plates of charcuterie, cheese, and whatever the region is doing well right now. Small, warm, and genuinely buzzing in a way that feels earned rather than engineered.

  90. Rank 1714. Chez Bastien

    Modern French

A modern bistro on Manosque's historic central square, where the chef's time at Alain Ducasse's La Bastide de Moustiers shows up in a menu that leans hard on Provençal vegetables without forgetting its way around a piece of meat. The cooking is fragrant and precise, the fixed menu is genuinely easy on a wallet, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand makes it the kind of lunch stop you plan a detour around.

    Modern Bistro

    The awards

  93. Stone and timber buildings caught between a fir forest and a lake set the mood before you even sit down. The restaurant leans into that setting hard, with a fireplace built for lingering in winter and a terrace that earns its keep in summer. The cooking is comfort-forward modern cuisine, with pâté en croûte a year-round fixture that changes form by season. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the room fills fast enough that snappy service matters.

  95. Rank 1714. Côté Mas

    Contemporary French

A contemporary bistro planted inside a working vineyard, with the Cévennes rolling out beyond the dining room windows. The chef leans into the surrounding land, local produce and estate wines folded into a menu that reads French at heart but wanders when it feels like it. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. Wines by the glass are priced as if someone here actually wants you to enjoy yourself.

  98. Rank 1714. Danton

    Neo Bistro

A neo-bistro on a quiet Lyon side street where the menu is short enough to read before you've finished the bread. The chef keeps things unfussy but the cooking times are dialled in with precision that would embarrass kitchens charging twice as much. Regional wines fill the list without being dogmatic about it. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and if they're full, the same team runs L'Escapade Danton next door.

  99. Rank 1714. Delicatessens

    Regional French

The terrace and picture windows frame a panoramic sweep over the rooftops of Gourdon that would make a landscape painter weep. This is a modern restaurant on a country estate where the team cooks regional produce with a light creative touch, plates it on local artisan ceramics, and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the trouble. The Lot Valley feels genuinely present on the table, not just on the menu.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
