The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. A quiet courtyard with fountains and palm trees sits at the center of this boutique hotel, which makes the corner of Meeting and Market streets feel like a country house someone forgot to move to the country. The rooms wrap around that courtyard rather than face the street, so the noise of downtown Charleston mostly stays outside. Old-school Southern hospitality, a handsome historic building, and a location that puts you in the middle of everything without the feeling that you're in the middle of everything.

    The awards

  2. Three towers, each decorated in a different eclectic style, make SAHARA feel less like a single hotel than a small, casino-anchored neighborhood. The Rat Pack used to haunt the original, but the current version skipped the nostalgia and went full 21st century instead. José Andrés's Bazaar Meat anchors the dining, multiple pools and a spa handle the daylight hours, and live residencies fill the theatre after dark.

    The awards

  3. The atrium lobby rises eight stories, all wrought iron and stained glass, and has been doing so since presidents started treating the place as a second home. This grand old Denver hotel has hosted every commander in chief since Teddy Roosevelt, plus Elvis, John Wayne, Buffalo Bill, and at least one burlesque star, which covers a decent range of American ambition. The rooms are exactly as formal as the history suggests.

    The awards

  4. Some of the loft-style rooms here come with spiral staircases separating the sleeping area from a small upper sitting space, which is either charming or mildly inconvenient after a late night on Frenchmen Street. This boutique hotel on the edge of the Lower Garden District went through a full overhaul, with herringbone floors, marble bathrooms, and a saltwater pool with a swim-up bar doing most of the convincing. Magazine Street is a short walk away.

    The awards

  5. Rotary telephones on the nightstands and antique elevator buttons set the tone at this boutique hotel inside a Beaux Arts bank building in downtown Miami's financial district. The 126 rooms lean into the nostalgia with white oak parquet floors and tufted headboards, while the rainfall showers and craft spirit minibars keep things from tipping into period drama. A rooftop cocktail lounge and a ground-floor restaurant make a strong case for skipping South Beach entirely.

    The awards

  6. The building has been housing itinerant strangers since the 1800s, first as a sailors' hostel, now as a low-budget boutique hotel in Chinatown. Rooms range from hostel-style bunks to private en-suites, so the price you pay shapes the experience considerably. The café and bar runs all-day breakfast and light fare, and a rooftop deck is rarer here than you'd think. Close to the river and just north of downtown, it makes a practical base for the rest of Portland.

    The awards

  7. Five restored buildings, three rowhouses and two carriage houses, connected by a palmetto-shaded courtyard in the Ansonborough district. Zero George is an eighteen-room boutique hotel whose address, technically zero, sounds like a clerical error until you're standing in it. The oak trees on the block are as old and composed as the architecture, which gives the whole place a quietly theatrical sense of having arrived somewhere specific.

  8. Rank 3308. Sanders BBQ Supply Co.

    Southern Barbecue

The oxtail gumbo here carries a whiff of hardwood smoke, which tells you everything about how this Beverly smokehouse operates. Sanders BBQ Supply Co. sits about twelve miles south of the Loop, deep in a neighborhood few tourists reach, doing the kind of slow, wood-fired barbecue that connects to Chicago's Great Migration roots. The New York Times put it on their 2025 restaurant list, and the pitmaster earned a James Beard semifinalist nod.

  10. A former auto garage with a butcher-paper cocktail menu still hanging above the makeshift kitchen, Liquid Diet is a creative cocktail bar where the bartenders juice and blend everyday ingredients into drinks that read like a dare. Bell pepper martinis, key lime sippers, banana bread cocktails with cookie shards frozen into chiseled ice cubes. Esquire named it one of the best bars in America, and curious tourists and pub crawlers seem to be putting that to the test nightly.

  12. Rank 3312. Alebrije

    Mexican

The darkly tinted windows and near-invisible signage in an East Nashville strip mall suggest you might have the wrong address, but push through. This casual Mexican restaurant built its following as a pandemic pop-up and landed here with a menu centered on masa, nixtamalized and ground in-house, turning up as tortillas, sopes, and tostadas. The New York Times named the asparagus tostada one of the best restaurant dishes eaten across the country in 2025. No liquor license, but the taco shop next door sells beer.

  13. A red-brick building with white trim and a weathervane off Central Avenue that reads more Boston than Phoenix, until the palm trees remind you where you are. This outdoor coffee shop serves espresso drinks, cold brew, and specialty lattes through a window, with fresh-griddled waffles and Bagelfelds bagels to go alongside. Bring a book and a jacket in winter; in summer, you're in the sun.

  14. Three historic buildings stitched together in Wilmington's waterfront district make up this Palisociety hotel, where rough post-industrial edges meet genuine Southern charm. Whimsical wallpaper, antiques, mid-century pieces, and contemporary furnishings share space without apology, the way a good thrift store wishes it could. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key, and it earns the designation by feeling local in a way that most boutique hotels only gesture at.

    The awards

  15. A Queen Anne house from the 1890s turned guest house, a Michelin Key holder, sitting just off Wilmington's riverside downtown. The rooms swing between serene cream-and-blond-wood calm and full-on Klein blue intensity, with contemporary art and one-off antiques keeping things from tipping into boutique-hotel cliche. There's a reading room, proper porches, and a vegan breakfast from a Californian chef that earns the morning.

    The awards

  16. Richly figured Italian marble sets the tone in the lobby, and the rooms follow with a modern minimalism that still manages to feel warm rather than austere. This boutique hotel sits a few minutes from the theme parks but reads more Miami than Orlando, which is either an escape or an irony depending on your mood. Akira Back oversees both the rooftop restaurant and the flagship downstairs. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

    The awards

  17. Hacienda-style beams reclaimed from a 19th-century barn hold up this boutique hotel in the heart of Rutherford, well before salvage chic became a design trend. Built by a salt heiress with enough restraint to stop at 26 rooms, it stays genuinely intimate by wine-country standards, where intimate can still mean a villa. The Michelin Guide has awarded it one Key.

    The awards

  18. A former private hall tucked quietly off Newport's main drag, The Vanderbilt is a boutique hotel that wears its age lightly. The original building and grand public spaces are intact, while rooms run from classic to contemporary, all brought up to a modern luxury standard without losing the feel of the thing. It holds a Michelin Key, which tracks: this is Newport doing itself without the theme-park version of Newport.

  19. The buffalo wings here have a two-day head start on you: brined overnight, chilled, then fried and sauced to order with Frank's and butter. This is the food operation inside the U Street bar Sport & Social, run by Scott Drewno, the chef behind Anju. The wings earned a spot on the Washingtonian's favorite dishes of the year, and after one order you'll understand the fuss, even if ordering anything else feels beside the point.

  20. A massive, custom-built pit dominates the backyard of this East Austin BBQ shop, and the line that snakes toward it on any given afternoon is its own kind of argument. The brisket arrives at the counter still warm enough to stop you mid-sentence, and the house-made sausages and ribs don't ask permission either. Tammy Wynette on the speakers, kimchi and chipotle slaw in the case. La Barbecue holds a Michelin star.

  22. The complimentary chips here come from heirloom corn, and the salsas that arrive with them set the tone for the whole meal: this is a Tex-Mex restaurant where the sauces are the point. The kitchen runs mole the way a French house runs stocks, with a dark, cinnamon-and-chocolate version draped over a spice-rubbed Cornish hen that arrives alongside basmati rice, because why not. Tres leches gets the same treatment, poured tableside.

  24. The Band Box is the food hall tucked behind the right-field fence at First Horizon Park, where you eat a hot dog and keep one eye on the Nashville Sounds. Thursday home games bring guest chefs doing their own takes on concession-stand grub, which beats the usual nachos under a heat lamp. Casual and ballpark-priced, with the crowd in team jerseys and a little more sauce on them than they planned.

  26. Rank 3326. Barra Santos

    Portuguese

A no-reservations Portuguese spot in Cypress Park where the counter seats facing the open kitchen fill up fast and everyone else negotiates the small room. The menu leans on family recipes and sharing plates, with salt cod fritters and charred cabbage over white beans doing a lot of the heavy lifting. A James Beard semifinalist in multiple years, including Best New Restaurant, which tracks for a place this small running this confidently.

  27. Rank 3327. Bar Etoile

    Seasonal Bistro

A French-leaning wine list runs deep at this cozy New American bistro on Western, but the kitchen earns its share of the attention. The menu is short and seasonal, built around what the market turned up that week rather than any fixed idea of itself. The cooking is restrained in the way that actually requires confidence. Wine Enthusiast named it one of the top new restaurants in 2025, and the Michelin Guide has it selected.

  34. Rank 3334. Ken

    Omakase Japanese

Six seats behind an unmarked door on Divisadero, Ken is the kind of omakase counter that rewards people who actually read their texts. The chef, a Hong Kong native who came up at respected Bay Area sushi bars, runs a menu that moves between classic nigiri and composed small plates, with cured egg yolk and preserved plum showing up where you'd least expect them. Unhurried, quiet, and booked well in advance.

  35. Rank 3334. Spago

    Cantonese

Spago is a business-casual fine-dining room at Bellagio, and its patio has a front-row view of the fountains, which is why you'll be humming Sinatra whether you meant to or not. The menu sits between luxurious and familiar: pizzas, pastas, and a thick cheeseburger with charred onions. The chinois chicken salad has been on since the early eighties, the culinary equivalent of a band that still plays the hits.

  36. Rank 3334. Un Bien

    Caribbean

The Caribbean Roast sandwich at this casual counter shop has a dramatic backstory involving a lawsuit over the marinade recipe, which is exactly the kind of lore that follows a legendary pork shoulder around. The roll is from Macrina Bakery, the aioli is garlicky, the onions are caramelized into something slippery and sweet, and the slow-roasted pork does most of the talking. Seattle is not a sandwich town, but Un Bien keeps making the case that it could be.

  37. Rank 3337. Fritai

Pulled pork pressed between two fried plantains, dressed with mango sauce and pikliz, is a reasonable introduction to what this Treme restaurant is doing with Haitian cooking. Fritai is a bright, welcoming room where the Caribbean flavors run vivid and the bar leans on clairin, the Haitian cane spirit that most New Orleans cocktail menus haven't caught up to yet. 38. Vintage mirrors, cherry wood, and brass gas chandeliers give this Downtown Brooklyn steakhouse an amber glow that makes every Tuesday feel like an occasion. The kitchen draws on the legacy of Edna Lewis, who ran it in the late eighties, so fried chicken and crab cakes share the menu with dry-aged prime beef. Dessert gets taken seriously, which a baked Alaska deserves. It has a spot on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

  39. The burritos here skip the rice, which Mission purists treat as either heresy or gospel depending on which taqueria they grew up on. Order yours dorado-style and the kitchen presses it on the plancha until the tortilla blisters gold. Counter service, cash-register lines out the door, no frills beyond the food. The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times have both made the pilgrimage to this old-school Mission taqueria, which tells you something about the burritos.

  41. Garlic naan pulled straight from a clay oven is the baseline here, and it only gets more interesting from there. Zareen's is a casual South Asian counter-service spot where street food classics share the menu with a chapli kebab burger on a pillowy bun and paneer tikka masala wrapped burrito-style. The masala fries alone are a strong argument for the side dish. A James Beard semifinalist, it draws a steady lunch crowd of people who know exactly what they're ordering.

  42. Matt Groening is a regular, and his illustrations hang on the wall alongside the framed press clippings, which tells you something about the Jitlada experience. This Southern Thai restaurant occupies a well-worn strip mall on Sunset, but the menu runs to hundreds of dishes, split between familiar Thai standards and a deep catalog of southern specialties that most LA Thai spots don't touch. A James Beard nominee, and the kind of place regulars will talk your ear off about.

  43. The booths at this coal-oven pizza parlor are so carved up with initials and signatures that the wood itself is basically a guestbook for the last several decades of Greenwich Village. Whole pies only, thin-crusted and charred just right, no slices and no exceptions. The room is loud, cheerful, and not trying to impress anyone, which is precisely why it has been full since before most of its customers were born.

The monkey bread served alongside the deviled crab is the kind of detail that makes a dish unforgettable. Ranch-inspired without being the least bit kitschy, it's the sort of place Houston does better than it gets credit for.

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Cold or hot noodles arrive with seasonal toppings that range from strictly traditional to a Bolognese that has no business working as well as it does. Grilled freshwater eel comes with its crisped spine, exactly as it would in Japan. The Michelin Guide has it listed among its selected restaurants in Dallas.

    Modern Italian

The team behind Boia De runs this wood-fired New American spot a few doors down, with no gas stove in sight. What's surprising is that vegetables do most of the heavy lifting: the lasagna sheets are made from mustard greens, and the menu treats produce with the same care you'd expect from a proper steakhouse. Pizza Rock is a big, loud, rock-and-roll pizza shop spread across multiple rooms, with booths for two and communal tables for everyone else. The menu runs several regional styles, and the staff can actually explain the differences. Named among 50 Top Pizza USA's excellent pizzerias, it draws a crowd that didn't want to eat on the Strip.

Coffee Coffee is a casual coffee shop right on the 101, all big windows and easy light, with seating inside and out. 58. A small, bright restaurant on Aurora where the kitchen turns out somewhere between 700 and 800 momos on a busy weekend, which tells you everything about the pace. The six-page menu covers Indian and Nepali cooking, with dumplings in ten styles, a full vegetarian slate, and enough bread to require a decision. 61. Tortillas pressed from heirloom corn varieties anchor the menu at this lively Mexican restaurant tucked into a Woodlands strip mall. The chef, a James Beard semifinalist, grew up in Jalisco and cooks like it, with lamb shank slow-braised in agave leaf and a tableside al pastor that gets lit on fire, because apparently subtlety is optional. The crowd that fills this place on a Friday night suggests the mall address puts nobody off.

  62. Rank 3368. Bavel

    Middle Eastern

Pillowy pita, blistered or fried, arrives alongside hummus and baba ghanoush worth skipping the entree for, though that would be a shame. Bavel is a stylish Middle Eastern restaurant from the team behind Bestia, set in a high-ceilinged Arts District warehouse that smells exactly like somewhere you want to be. The menu draws on Israeli, Moroccan, Turkish, and Egyptian cooking, and the room fills with people who booked ahead and dressed accordingly.

  63. Half the rooms share a bathroom, and the Ace Hotel will tell you so without flinching. This Belltown hotel pitches itself squarely at travelers who'd rather have 14-foot ceilings and whitewashed brick walls than a private shower. The lobby reads like an art gallery that wandered into the hospitality business, all dark walnut floors and retro-futuristic white walls. Expect a crowd that owns interesting jackets and has opinions about fonts.

  64. The rooftop lounge and the sandy palette both nod to Camelback Mountain, which gives this modern Hilton a more coherent design identity than most hotels in the Phoenix sprawl. Rooms are contemporary and quietly comfortable, with Cobre Kitchen + Cocktails and the open-air Outrider Rooftop Lounge on site. The real advantage is the address: Old Town Scottsdale is one of the few genuinely walkable neighborhoods in a metro that treats sidewalks as a theoretical concept.

  65. RiNo has been through its artist-loft-to-restaurant-row arc, and the Catbird arrived as the boutique hotel chapter. The rooms run studio and loft sizes, but the design packs in more considered comfort than the square footage should allow, with a modernist sensibility that reads less Denver and more Amsterdam. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels, which tracks for a neighborhood that treats "evolving" as a permanent state.

  66. A wraparound rooftop bar with Fenway-facing sunset views is a strong opening argument for a hotel. citizenM is a compact-room, XL-bed chain hotel on Newbury Street where tablet controls handle the blackout blinds, the mood lighting, and basically everything else. Self-serve check-in keeps arrival frictionless, and the bright lobby fills with original art and neon. Walkable to almost everything worth walking to in Back Bay.

  67. The hand-operated elevator that has been ferrying people up this 1926 flatiron building since long before it was a hotel is a reasonable clue about the vibe. A 71-room boutique hotel at Asheville's sharpest corner, it converted former offices into rooms with Bellino linens and mountain views, keeping the bones intact. A wood-fired Italian restaurant, a rooftop bar, and a Prohibition-themed basement bar round out the floors between.

  68. A boutique hotel in Denver's Highlands district, where the exterior is clean and contemporary and the interior pivots hard into Victorian detail, a nod to the neighborhood's founding era. LoHi is one of those corners of Denver that's still figuring out what it wants to be, with galleries and breweries trading space with new builds, and this property sits comfortably in the middle of that negotiation.

  69. A converted 19th-century textile warehouse in Greenpoint, the Henry Norman is a boutique hotel where the loft-style rooms lean into the bones of the building: hardwood floors, exposed brick, and, depending on your room, a terrace or rooftop. The retro vibe extends to a vintage taxi kept on call as in-house car service, which is either charming or a lot, depending on your mood. Williamsburg is a short walk south when you need a meal.

  71. A 52-story tower shaped like a ship's prow where the Miami River meets Biscayne Bay, this hotel takes the nautical metaphor further than most: it's the only Miami property with dockside access, handling vessels up to 900 feet with overnight mooring and onboard catering. Floor-to-ceiling bay views show up in most guest rooms, so you're never allowed to forget the water. The Michelin Guide has it on their selected hotels list.

  74. A Perkins + Will renovation turned a landmark Deep Ellum building into this Kimpton boutique hotel, and the bones of the original structure still show. Kimpton does a reliable version of stylish-but-approachable, which fits the neighborhood's mix of music venues and murals better than anything glass-and-tower would. A solid base for exploring a part of Dallas that most conventioneers never find.

  76. A Fernando Botero bronze in the lobby sets the tone for this luxury hotel in Brickell, where the common areas read more like a gallery than a corridor. Suites come with marble kitchen bars, soaking tubs, rainfall showers, and private balconies over the Miami skyline. The ninth-floor terrace has a rooftop pool for daytime lounging. Guests also get beach and pool access at the Delano in South Beach, which softens the blow of not being on the water yourself.

  77. The walnut-heavy Beaux Arts lobby sets the tone at this downtown Dallas hotel, where the fixtures are bold and the lighting is the kind that makes everyone look like they have a secret. Rooms run toward warm and plush, and the suites are reportedly among the largest in the city. The heated rooftop pool stays open until midnight, cocktails included, which is a civilized policy for which the Adolphus deserves more credit than it gets.

  78. A 121-room boutique hotel on First Avenue that will, without making a fuss about it, lay out a doggie bed for your St. Bernard. Art-forward rooms and a genuinely warm staff make it the rare place that manages to feel upscale without feeling exclusive, drawing business travelers, families, and the occasional touring musician in equal measure. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  79. Two early-1900s buildings on Washington Street house this 242-room hotel, the interiors dressed in mid-century neutrals with orange accents, which is a more interesting answer to Boston's past than a tricorn hat. The Godfrey sits in a city where the hotels tend toward the historic and the hushed, and it leans into that without being stuffy about it. Staff who take your comfort seriously, in the old-school sense of the phrase.

  80. The Lancaster has been hosting Theater District performers since forever, and the walls haven't forgotten: over 200 works by local Texas artists line the corridors of this downtown Houston hotel. Rooms run classic and comfortable, the restaurant handles American standards, and there's an afternoon tea service that gives way to cocktail hour with a straight face. The kind of place that still takes curtain times seriously.

  81. A grand marble staircase and gold-accented lobby set the tone at this downtown Houston hotel, which has the Art Deco personality that most convention-district addresses skip entirely. The 223 rooms come with soaking tubs and rain showers, Hull & Oak handles Southern food and tequila downstairs, and The Deck rooftop bar handles evenings. Toyota Center and the Theater District are both a short walk away.

  82. A boutique hotel that started as a one-off and still carries that self-possessed confidence, the Lofton sits in Minneapolis's North Loop with the ease of a place that never had to prove anything to a parent brand. Rooms are stylish without chasing a trend, and the design earns its luxury quietly, the way good hotels used to before lobbies started looking like mood boards. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

  83. A rooftop garden bar with Blue Ridge Mountain views anchors this boutique hotel in downtown Asheville, selected by the Michelin Guide. Rooms lean industrial-chic, with exposed brick, velvet loveseats, and bar carts stocked with craft spirits. The lobby's archways and towering bookshelves nod quietly to the Biltmore Estate. Downstairs, an all-day café and a basement bar with a bowling alley keep guests from wandering too far into the mountains.

  84. Murals of Boston song lyrics cover the bedroom walls, which sets the tone for this affordable boutique hotel in the South End's mostly brick landscape. The building is mid-century modernist, the palette is muted blues and reds, and the pop art references in the common areas are oversized enough to make the point. Conspire, the multi-purpose ground-floor space, runs breakfast, all-day coffee, and evening drinks, drawing a younger crowd not angling for Back Bay luxury.

    Persian

The name means "heart, captured" in Persian, which sets the tone before you've even sat down. This sceney Inman Village restaurant is built around sharing, with spreads and house bread to start, a dedicated section of tahdig on the menu, and slow-cooked meats for the table. The crowd arrives dressed to be seen, but the food is the kind that makes people stop talking mid-sentence. A Michelin Guide selection.

    Mexico City Mexican Cocktail Bar

1111 is a Montrose cocktail bar and restaurant that takes its cues from Mexico City, which explains the cave-like room and the oval bar at its center. It's pronounced "eleven eleven," a favor to anyone who'd otherwise say it four ways. The margarita comes crystal clear under a cloud of salty lime air, and it sits next door to a jazz club, so the evening practically plans itself. Expect cocktail-hour prices and a good outfit.

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizzeria in the Heights where the reservation book fills so fast that the walk-in line starts forming early, which is a lot of ceremony for a pie. The wood-fired menu leans on Texas farms and seasonal produce, with tortelloni and polenta tots filling out the table. Upstairs, a 16-seat Italian Deco bar pours things like a Biscoff espresso martini. Eater counted it among Houston's best new restaurants.

    Pizzeria

A disco ball spins over the dining room at this Graham Avenue pizzeria, where the thin-crust pies share the bill with house pasta and focaccia made in the open kitchen. The Italian wine list runs to two pages of sparkling alone, which tells you something about the ambitions here. The Calabrian soppressata and hot honey on the Diavola have a following. Michelin has it in the guide.

  92. Exposed brick, dim lighting, and vintage New York photography set a mood that a taxidermied dog in a birthday hat quietly undermines. Confidant is a sharing-plates restaurant in Brooklyn Heights with a menu that runs from scallop crudo and trout mousse to dry-aged meats and a prawn pot pie worth leaning across the table for. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the food takes the whole thing more seriously than the decor lets on.

    Italian-American

Florence Supper Club is a red-sauce Italian-American restaurant done in dark wood, roomy booths, and checkered tablecloths, lit low enough that everyone looks like they have a good alibi. The menu sticks to clams casino, towering Caesars, and chicken Parmesan, all of it heavy, so bring friends with appetites. Reservations run scarce, but the bar takes walk-ins, and waiting there with a drink is no hardship.

    Basque

The counter seats by the roll-up door are the ones to ask for at this Basque-leaning bistro in Denver's West Wash Park. The chef runs a rotisserie, ships white asparagus from France when it's in season, and keeps a pan con tomate on the menu that nearly every table orders. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List, which tracks. The whole place reads like a bistro that skipped the part where bistros become self-conscious about being bistros.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
