The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. An L-shaped pewter bar anchors this compact seafood spot tucked into the ground floor of a Back Bay rowhouse. The menu shifts with the catch, running from daily crudo and Maine uni toast to whatever oysters and shellfish came in that morning. The plateau de fruits de mer is the move if you're with someone you like, or someone you want to impress. A James Beard semifinalist, 2025.

  2. Prime beef has been the main event here since the 1980s, with the kitchen turning out steaks at a consistency that keeps the regulars from ever really needing the menu. It's a classic North Jersey steakhouse, lobster and fine seafood rounding things out, plus a sushi and sashimi program that feels less like a gimmick and more like a genuine reason to stray from the beef. Just over the George Washington Bridge for Manhattan types making the case for New Jersey.

  3. David Chang's Asian-American restaurant on the second floor of the Boulevard Tower has Strip views and the kind of casual-cool energy his name has meant for a long time. The pork belly bao is the thing people come back for, soft bun, supple meat, hoisin, done. The bar runs passionfruit spritzes, Milk Bar sits next door, and the spicy rice cakes alone justify skipping whatever you had planned for dinner.

  4. A plantation-style estate on 40 acres with Blue Ridge Mountain views, where certified butlers serve mint juleps and the carriage house and a renovated 18th-century schoolhouse have been turned into guest cottages. The manor rooms lean toward Fifth Avenue rather than faded gentility, with a modern art collection keeping things from getting too stiff. A retreat hotel popular with destination weddings and couples who want the kind of quiet that requires leaving your zip code.

  5. Rank 4405. Lupe’s Situ Tacos

    Mexican-Lebanese

The tacos here are pinned with toothpicks and dropped straight into the fryer, which tells you most of what you need to know. This snug taco shop on Ballard Ave serves deep-fried tacos built around Lebanese-spiced beef or herby cauliflower, a family recipe from the chef's grandmother. Soups round out the short menu. Pale pink walls and floral oilcloths set the scene. Esquire named it one of America's best new restaurants in 2025.

  6. The oxtail Italian beef sandwich, melting with cheese and spiked with giardiniera, tells you right away what kind of chef is running this upscale New American kitchen. Hush is an intimate room in a Scottsdale strip mall, open kitchen sending smells out front, nostalgic rock at a volume that invites conversation. The menu shifts often, but the kitchen's touch with vegetables, fish, and meat stays constant. Reservations through Tock are a smart move.

  7. Vegetables get top billing here, but the duck confit is quietly on the menu for anyone who needs convincing. All Saints is a casual-ish dinner spot where the kitchen coaxes produce into the kind of food you order twice, and the cocktail program runs from raspberry spritzes to zero-proof drinks that don't taste like an afterthought. The former Bardo space on Hennepin feels lived-in and easy, the sort of room that doesn't announce its ambitions.

  11. Twenty seats, one turn per night, and a tasting menu that changes with whatever the season insists on. Demi is Gavin Kaysen's intimate counter restaurant, a deliberately small operation that sits in the shadow of his better-known Spoon and Stable nearby. The room is close enough that you can watch the kitchen work through every course, which is either thrilling or slightly stressful depending on your personality.

  18. A falafel banh mi or hummus topped with kimchi sounds like a fever dream until you're eating it and it makes complete sense. This casual counter-service spot on Lyndale blends global pantries without apology, and the Moroccan-spiced fried chicken stuffed into a cheddar scallion biscuit is the kind of menu item that shouldn't work on paper. Order at the counter, grab a seat, and walk next door to Milkjam Creamery when the mood calls for it.

  19. Rank 4419. Gallaghers

    Steakhouse

The dry-aging locker runs along the front window so you see the USDA Prime slabs before you even open the door, which is a very Gallaghers way of setting expectations. This old-school Midtown steakhouse has been around forever, and the walls of jockey photos and the rolling dessert cart are not ironic. Hickory-grilled steaks, creamed spinach, a bar that hums, and a menu that still winks at Prohibition. Ranked among the World's Best Steak Restaurants.

  20. Rank 4420. Dân Dã

    Vietnamese

Dân Dã calls its cooking "comfort cuisine," which undersells a menu that runs from curried beef claypot to salads piled with jellyfish, cuttlefish, and pickled lotus root. It's a Vietnamese restaurant on East Colfax with an enormous menu and a full bar that leans into tamarind, guava, and lychee, so the drinks keep up with the food. The dining room packs in tightly, which gives the whole place an energy that suits the cooking.

  21. No octopus, no branzino, no horiatiki. Bar Vlaha is a Greek restaurant that tells a narrower story: the Vlachs, mountain shepherds from northern Greece who foraged forests and fished freshwater streams rather than the Aegean. The menu follows that logic, so beef cheeks braise with prunes in clay pots and the tzatziki gets a drizzle of honey. The New York Times named it among Boston's 25 best restaurants right now, which feels about right for a room this specific.

  22. Rank 4422. Moëca

    Seafood

Moëca is named for a soft-shell crab and runs on the same idea: something from the sea, handled with care, at the right moment. It's a neighborhood seafood restaurant in Cambridge that reads as date-night territory without making a thing of it, low lighting and a room that actually works. The menu is built for sharing, with global flavors pulled across small and large plates. Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants in 2023.

  23. Rank 4423. Odie B's

    Mexican Coffee Shop

Tequila-spiked Gatorade on the patio is a real menu choice, and somehow it makes complete sense once you're here. Odie B's is a boisterous Mexican-leaning coffee shop and sandwich counter in Sunnyside where the morning bleeds into afternoon without anyone particularly minding. Focaccia sandwiches, griddled banana bread, and spiced bloody marys keep the regulars cycling back. A second location sits in RiNo for when you're on the wrong side of town.

  24. Oma's Hideaway is the loud, shiny little sister of Gado Gado, a Division Street restaurant where psychedelic Indonesian music plays over a menu that treats the word "restraint" as a rumor. Salted egg yolk curry fries come with sambal ketchup, and lamb satay arrives tucked inside a fried steam bun. The bar glitters like a disco ball, so the drinks keep pace, and nobody here is quietly checking their phone.

  25. Rank 4425. Mayahuel

    Mexico City Mexican

Named for the Aztec goddess of agave and fertility, this Mexico City-inspired restaurant in Autry Park takes the naming convention seriously: the agave bar runs on additive-free spirits and the cocktail list splits neatly into light-and-refreshing versus smoky-and-heavy. Netflix-familiar chef Luis Robledo Richards brings the kind of menu that sits just below fine dining in category but not in ambition, with brunch drawing the weekend crowd for chilaquiles and a Mexico City eggs Benedict.

  26. At 300 square feet, Matryoshka Coffee is less a place to linger and more a place to collect your espresso and marvel at the rainbow decor before heading back into the world. The micro cafe sits inside an apartment complex on the south side, and the menu leans into the same spirit as the walls: specialty drinks arrive with sprinkles and edible glitter, and the food options are instant ramen and cereal. Somehow this is not a bit; it's just the vibe.

  27. Rank 4428. Feringhee

    Modern Indian

The name means "foreigner," which sets the tone for a modern Indian restaurant that treats the cuisine as a starting point rather than a finish line. Tucked into a Chandler strip mall, it runs cocktails spiked with masala chai vodka or ghee-washed whiskey alongside small plates, large plates, and pani puri worth sharing around the table. The room skews upscale without being stiff about it.

  28. Rank 4428. The Bindery

    Eclectic Café

A smoked rabbit and pecan pie with sharp cheddar and mustard gelato will tell you everything you need to know about this LoHi all-day cafe. The chef behind it has cooked her way through Italy, Israel, and Mexico, and the menu shows every mile, running from posole verde at lunch to butterflied branzino at dinner without ever feeling scattered. Come morning for the bakery case, stay because the room earns it.

  32. Flora + Fauna is a coffee shop in the Highland Yards development, where the nature theme is understated enough that nobody will ask you to hug a tree. The drinks menu keeps rotating through inventive flavors, and there's a lunch menu with seasonal pancake specials for dates who want a real meal. It's the sort of place people bring someone they like, and the parking lot helps. Nashville Scene named it Best Place for a Coffee Date.

  33. The Coco Puffs, chocolate cream puffs blanketed in frosting, are what most people come for, but Liliha is equally a diner, and the counter at the Kuakini Street original is where you want to sit. Short-order cooks work at a pace that makes you forget your coffee is getting cold. Crisp waffles, char-grilled burgers, oxtail soup, butter rolls with aggressively red jelly: the menu reads like it was written by someone who never overthought anything.

  35. Rank 4438. Hey Kiddo

    Pan-Asian

A cocktail lounge called Ok Yeah tucked into the back tells you everything about the vibe here. Hey Kiddo is a playful, Asian-inflected restaurant and bar on the third floor of a Tennyson Street building, with a rooftop deck most people don't find on the first visit. The menu runs on shareable plates, and the team behind it earned a James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur semifinalist nod. The room skews young and loud in the best way.

  36. Rank 4440. Drinking Pig BBQ

    Caribbean Barbecue

Caribbean spices do the work that Texas smoke usually handles at this Coconut Grove barbecue spot, where the brisket runs 14 to 16 hours and the spare ribs come jerk-seasoned. The team also runs the fine-dining restaurants Kyu and Shiso, and the patience shows in the supporting cast too: collards, baked beans, cornbread made from fresh-shucked corn. The open courtyard under the hammocks makes a strong argument for ordering an old-fashioned alongside.

  37. Tocabe is a fast-casual spot where you shuffle down the line pointing at things, Chipotle-style, except the thing you're pointing at is fry bread folded around spiced bison. The recipes come from the Osage side of the family, and the berry BBQ-glazed ribs are the sort of detail no chain has ever bothered to invent. It's counter service, so come as you are, and the online shop sells blue corn pancake mix if you're feeling ambitious.

  38. Rank 4442. Field & Vine

    Vietnamese

Wisteria and grapevines twist overhead like they're mid-takeover of the exposed ductwork, and the candlelight does the rest. Field & Vine is a New American restaurant tucked down an alley in Somerville, where a wood-burning hearth crisps duck legs and chars cabbage while the menu quietly gets weird in good ways, miso butter on cornbread, fish-sauce aioli in the tartare. The New York Times named it among Boston's 25 best.

  39. The room seats maybe thirty people and fills up fast, tucked between the West End and Parkside in a spot that looks like a classic neighborhood tavern and then proceeds to serve broiled scallop with caviar and hollandaise. Small plates anchor the menu, the wine list has a point of view, and the cocktails are sharper than the setting lets on. Condé Nast Traveler put it on their Portland list, which surprises no one who's been.

  40. The line outside the squat building on Fredericksburg Road has been a fixture of San Antonio mornings, afternoons, and evenings for as long as anyone can remember. This is a Tex-Mex diner in the old sense, the kind where eggs over easy get doused in salsa and scooped up with warm flour tortillas, and where the menu is so sprawling that regulars still haven't covered it. The staff treats everyone like they've been coming for years, which, in many cases, they have.

  41. Rank 4444. Pammy's

    Mediterranean

Salvaged wood, warm lighting, and a room that feels like it was always there make this Cambridge neighborhood restaurant an easy place to linger. The Mediterranean menu runs prix-fixe, built around careful sourcing and combinations that take a few turns you wouldn't expect. The New York Times and Bon Appétit have both taken notice, and the regulars act accordingly, like they found it first.

  42. Rank 4444. Sachet

    Mediterranean

The corner windows at this Mediterranean restaurant pull you in before you've even touched the door, and the room inside delivers on the promise: open, sunny, and staffed by people who seem to mean it. The kitchen ranges from Morocco to Syria to Spain without breaking a sweat, and the booths fill fast enough that the long counter bar exists for a reason. The wine program earned a James Beard Semifinalist nod, which in Dallas is its own kind of conversation starter.

    Portuguese Seafood

Mosaic tiles and fishing-net chandeliers set the mood at this polished Portuguese seafood restaurant in the South End, where the menu moves through salt cod fritters, piri piri chicken, and a shrimp Mozambique swimming in a garlic-butter sauce that makes the grilled bread feel mandatory. Save room for the pastry side of things: the sonhos are the kind of fried-dough situation that quietly becomes the point of the meal.

  47. A French team runs this relaxed bistro on Knox Street, and the room reads more neighborhood than tourist trap, with no beret-shaped light fixtures in sight. Classics like duck à l'orange and rabbit in mustard sauce anchor the dinner menu, while lunch keeps things simpler with oysters and fish rillettes. The Paris-Brest is the kind of dessert you order, then immediately resent whoever you brought with you. The Michelin Guide has it selected.

  48. Rank 4451. Madurai Mes

    South Indian

Southern Indian cooking in a strip mall near the Medical Center, where the booths are scuffed and the lighting belongs in a horror meme but the thalis arrive on banana leaves piled around a mound of white rice. This is the kind of casual, inexpensive spot that fills a real gap, since Northern Indian food tends to dominate the city. The biryanis and Madras curries hold up well for delivery, though the lunch thali is the reason regulars keep coming back.

    Vietnamese

The line forms before you find the sign, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Vietnamese restaurant tucked inside Falls Church's Eden Center. Rice Paper has been an old-school institution in the Northern Virginia Vietnamese dining scene, turning out coconut curries, lemongrass chicken, and herb-heavy salads to a room that fills fast and empties slowly. Seafood

Lobsters caught by the chef's cousin arrive within 48 hours, which goes some way toward explaining the lobster roll price. Row 34 is a seafood restaurant that does all the expected things, clam chowder and halibut and calamari, then goes a little further: house-smoked fish, cured things, pâté, saltines baked in-house. It's the kind of place where the extra effort shows up in the details rather than on a placard announcing it.

    Rustic Roman Trattoria

Named for the Roman street where the chef grew up, this Dorchester trattoria is built around the conviction that Lazio doesn't get nearly enough credit. The team makes its own pasta, bakes sourdough, roasts porchetta, and somehow squeezes brunch bombolini into the rotation. The cacio e pepe is a four-ingredient argument that nobody needs to improve on cacio e pepe. The New York Times put it on their Boston shortlist, which the regulars on Dorchester Ave probably already knew.

  56. A fleet of complimentary bikes parked out front sets the tone at this mid-century modernist-inspired hotel in Midtown, a neighborhood that packs in more museums, music venues, and performing arts than it has any right to. Rooms lean boutique rather than business-casual Hilton, and a modern Southern restaurant and bar keeps things from feeling like a conference layover. The Michelin Guide includes it among its selected hotels.

  59. The rooftop pool looks straight at the Rocky Mountains, which sets the tone for everything below it. Halcyon is a boutique hotel in Cherry Creek North, the quieter, shop-lined neighborhood a short drive from downtown Denver, and it threads a needle the area usually fumbles: the design is genuinely glamorous without feeling like it's trying to impress you. A couple of ambitious restaurants and activity-focused perks round it out.

  60. A boutique hotel a short walk from Lake Champlain, Hotel Vermont trades the quilts-and-doilies New England B&B aesthetic for clean lines, stone-tiled showers, and city views. The outdoor wood-fired kitchen and bar keeps things local, turning out pizzas and lobster rolls for guests who want a reason to stay in. Burlington's bar and restaurant scene is right outside the door for everyone else.

  64. The boulevard out front is named for the man who invented the Polaroid camera, which tells you something about the neighborhood's self-image. This Kimpton hotel sits on the Cambridge side of the Charles River, close enough to MIT and Harvard that the lobby's soft sci-fi aesthetic, industrial meets minimalist meets saturated river greens and blues, feels less like a design choice and more like a local dialect.

  66. Check-in happens at Bar Moxy, which sets the tone: this is a hotel where the lobby is also your first drink. The 111-room property folds a new tower into three renovated Italianate storefronts, and the interiors lean into Cincinnati's German immigrant past with a modern Bavarian twist that stops short of lederhosen. The Chase Rooftop Bar sits above it all with skyline views, and Great American Ball Park is practically next door.

  67. Red brick exterior, Shaker furniture, and denim pillows make this hotel feel like Harvard's well-appointed guest quarters, which is more or less what it is, sitting between the university and Radcliffe. Rooms lean Boston-cozy over sleek, with fresh flowers and burgundy armchairs. The walls are famously thick, which matters more than you'd think when the neighbors are practicing anything at all.

  68. A renovated mid-century motel in Mid-City, the Drifter trades gallery-lined French Quarter charm for a courtyard pool that becomes the whole point by afternoon. Rooms are spare, minimalist, and comfortable without pretending to be grand. Food trucks rotate through, craft beer and third-wave coffee are on hand, and live music runs most nights, so light sleepers should plan accordingly. The Michelin Guide has it in their selected hotels.

  72. The hot ham with melted Swiss on a bun costs $7, which tells you almost everything about this retro burger shop. George Motz has spent his career obsessing over regional American hamburger joints, and the menu reflects that slightly unhinged dedication, with monthly tributes to obscure local styles and an off-menu grilled cheese that hides a burger inside. The New York Times named it one of New York's best new restaurants of 2024.

  73. Rank 4481. Macheen

    Mexican

Housemade corn tortillas are the baseline here, warm and soft, and everything else is a riff on the form that lands somewhere between street food and genuine curiosity. Macheen is a taqueria operating as a pop-up, rotating through Boyle Heights and Smorgasburg, with a menu that might pile daikon pickles and grilled rib-eye onto one taco and sweet smoky beets al pastor onto another. The New York Times put it on their 25 best L.A. restaurants list, which tracks.

  74. Rank 4482. Lenox

    Caribbean

The lechon arrives as a pinwheel of pork with skin so shatteringly crisp it sounds like a problem. Lenox is a Caribbean restaurant in Belltown doing Nuyorican cooking with palm-print wallpaper, rattan fixtures, and a rum-heavy cocktail list that leans hard into the beach-bar premise. The spice mixes are made in-house, the piña coladas get poured generously, and Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants in 2025.

  77. CJ & D's is a tomato pie counter tucked inside Cartesian Brewing on East Passyunk, which means you order in person and then drink beer while a pie is made, one at a time. Trenton-style puts the cheese down first and the sauce on top, an arrangement that looks like a mistake until you see the thin, blistered crust. There are four pies on the menu, so the hardest decision is how many to commit to before the first one lands.

  79. Rank 4484. Miyake

    Classic Japanese

The blonde wood sushi bar is the room's focal point, and the chefs behind it move like they've been doing this forever. Miyake is a classic Japanese restaurant on Fore Street where the kitchen fuses traditional sushi with French and Italian technique and leans hard into Maine seafood. Every seat fills fast, and the counter draws regulars who know exactly what they're ordering before they sit down.

  80. Rank 4484. Papi

    Puerto Rican Cocktail Bar

Mahogany double doors shipped from Puerto Rico anchor the entrance to this Puerto Rican cocktail bar in the Old Port, where salsa and merengue fill the room and the tiled bar is the obvious place to sit. The drinks lean inventive, the food is serious enough to linger over, and the whole thing has a regional Spirited Award to its name. Portland has seafood shacks covered; this is doing something else entirely.

  81. The counter seats maybe a dozen people, the room is barely wider than a hallway, and it runs noon until late without a break. Petit Trois is a French bistro in Hollywood doing the classics straight: escargots, steak frites, a legendary omelet. French hip-hop plays while the kitchen ignores it completely and turns out textbook bistro cooking. The "Big Mec," a double cheeseburger finished with bordelaise, is the one concession to the neighborhood.

  82. Custom Rookwood pottery displayed above the open kitchen pass sets the tone at Jose Salazar's namesake restaurant, a mid-sized dining room where servers stand with hands clasped, quietly hunting for glasses to refill. The format is tapas in spirit: order everything at once, and the team paces it out. Dishes lean seasonal and arrive with an almost theatrical commitment to color, the kind of cooking that makes you notice it before you taste it.

  83. Schulte & Herr is a small, low-key German restaurant on Cumberland Avenue where fresh rye bread and a paprika-heavy quark spread arrive before you've finished sitting down. It's BYOB with no corkage fee, so the real planning happens at a wine shop beforehand. The plates are homestyle and generous, built around things like sauerbraten that sends its gravy into the bread dumplings. Expect to leave needing a nap, and not minding.

  84. Rank 4484. Seviche

    Nuevo Latin American

The ceviche is the obvious draw, but the skirt steak with chimichurri and cheese-mashed potatoes quietly argues that this is as much a steakhouse as a ceviché bar. Anthony Lamas's Latin American restaurant on Bardstown Road has been around long enough to predate Louisville's dining boom and still fills the room on its own terms. He earned a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2022, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen takes the menu.

  87. The blue-painted building with a red neon sign on Shattuck Avenue does not undersell what's inside. This is a sousaku izakaya, meaning the menu leans into New Japanese cooking, the kind you'd find in Tokyo or Osaka right now: hot pot, skewers, fried fish cakes, seasonal sashimi added only because regulars kept asking. The menu rotates constantly, which makes repeat visits feel less like loyalty and more like good sense.

  88. The injera arrives with every order, a spongy sourdough flatbread that doubles as plate and utensil, and first-timers get a menu with a glossary to help them figure out what they've just ordered. This Ethiopian restaurant has been an ASU rite of passage for what feels like forever, a family-run strip mall spot that leans hard into vegetarian dishes and fragrant stews. The dining room is cozy and carpeted, and the coffee ceremony is not decorative.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
