  1. Rank 283. Soda Club

    Natural Italian Cocktail Bar

Velvet chairs, copper fixtures, and stained-glass lamps set a Prohibition-speakeasy mood on Avenue A, though the menu leans firmly into vegan Italian. Soda Club is a natural wine bar where house-made pasta carries the evening, the wine list skews minimal-intervention, and the whole thing holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The room is dim enough that everyone looks like they have secrets, which feels appropriate for a place named after Italian hand-crafted sodas.

  2. Rank 283. YUGIN

    Sushi

Twelve seats at a counter above Central Park, where the skyline does a lot of the talking before the food even starts. YUGIN is an omakase spot inside the Plaza Hotel, opening with composed seasonal courses before moving into a classical nigiri progression, with faint European touches woven through Japanese technique. Custom ceramics, pristine sourcing, and restrained seasoning throughout, for a crowd that books months out and dresses accordingly.

  3. Tucked inside ABC Carpet & Home, this vegetarian restaurant runs on the kind of clean-lined, chandelier-scattered energy that makes a green juice feel entirely appropriate in a wine glass. The menu moves through breakfast, brunch, and lunch with pressed juices and kombuchas alongside clever plant-based plates. The New York Times named it among the 100 best restaurants in the city, which the business crowd and the ladies-who-lunch set have known for a while.

  4. Rank 303. Atoboy

    Korean

The room is minimal to the point of industrial, which keeps the focus where it belongs: Korean cooking that doesn't explain itself to anyone. This Gramercy fine dining spot runs a prix-fixe-style menu where the combinations are adventurous but never alienating, the sort of place where kimchi beurre blanc makes complete sense by the second bite. Regulars book well ahead, and the team's warmth closes the gap between the spare room and a very full table.

  5. Rank 303. Cafe Commerce

    Contemporary American

The coconut cake, four layers tall and with its own devoted following, tells you a lot about what Cafe Commerce is going for. This is a neighborhood restaurant on the Upper East Side, warm and a little glamorous, where Harold Moore runs a contemporary American menu with French and Italian pulls. Steak Diane shares space with sweet potato tortellini carried over from the beloved original. The kind of place you book for a Tuesday because you deserve a Tuesday like this.

  6. The line out front in Long Island City is your landmark. Casa Enrique is a buzzy Mexican restaurant where family recipes share the menu with tacos and guacamole, but the kitchen finds its footing with the bigger plates: braised lamb shank, branzino marinated al pastor, and a mole that appears in several forms and never disappoints. Frozen watermelon margaritas keep arriving whether you asked or not, which is not a complaint.

  7. Rank 303. Che

    Natural Wine Bar

  8. A former automotive welding shop in East Williamsburg now houses this multi-roaster coffee boutique, where the menu leans into distilled coffee, blue algae, and clarified matcha alongside a hand-brew selection from roasters around the world. The back of the space runs a small craft brewery called Niteglow, so the afternoon espresso can pivot to a draft pour. It reads like a coffee shop that got very ambitious and kept going.

  9. Rank 303. DOLORES

    Mexico City Cocktail Bar

  10. Rank 303. Eléa

    Greek

Whitewashed brick, weathered wood beams, and soft lighting give this Upper West Side Greek restaurant the kind of room that makes a Tuesday feel like a reasonable night out. The cooking leans rustic, with spreads and pita giving way to whole grilled fish in lemon and caper sauce. The menu reads like someone's Greek grandmother got hold of a very good pantry, which is more or less the point.

  15. Rank 303. il Gigante

    Italian

A small mug of grated parm arrives alongside the lasagna alla Bolognese for table-side sprinkling, which tells you everything about this cozy Italian neighborhood restaurant in Ridgewood. The menu is short and unfussy, running from cured meats and fried calamari through cacio e pepe and branzino, with daily specials filling the gaps. Exactly the kind of place you start bringing your kids, and then keep going back to long after they've moved out.

  16. Rank 303. Ivan Ramen

    Ramen Shop

Ivan Orkin, a New Yorker who built his reputation running ramen shops in Tokyo, brought the whole project back home to the Lower East Side. The ramen shop is compact and casual, counter seats facing the kitchen, with a menu that mixes Japanese technique and New York personality without making a big fuss about either. The tsukemen, where you dip thick fresh noodles into rich pork broth and season to taste, rewards the curious. Grub Street named it one of the city's best restaurants for kids.

  17. Jean-Georges Vongerichten started here before the global empire, and the cozy two-story townhouse still feeds the Upper East Side's moneyed regulars like it has been around forever. The menu reads like a confident neighborhood restaurant that doesn't need to impress anyone: roast chicken, seared salmon, rack of lamb. Seasonal, polished, and utterly unbothered by trends. The molten chocolate cake has outlasted several food movements and shows no signs of leaving.

  18. A bar anchors the narrow room at this buzzy south Indian restaurant named for the city at the tip of the subcontinent, which tells you where the kitchen's loyalties lie: seafood, regional spice, and coastal flavors that don't pull punches. The slow-cooked beef short rib, draped in Madras onion rings and crispy curry leaves, has become something people keep coming back to mention. The Michelin Guide has it selected.

  20. Gregory Gourdet runs this prix-fixe inside the Printemps department store on Wall Street, pulling Caribbean, French, and Asian threads into a tight, composed menu. The tilework and green patterned booths are very much meant to be photographed, and the crowd obliges. The duck glazed in cane syrup with tamarind jus is the kind of thing that makes the rest of the meal feel like buildup. The New York Times named the rice and beans among its favorite dishes of the year.

  21. Rank 303. Mario's Restaurant

    Historic Italian

  22. The omakase option is how regulars talk about this place, and the downtown room backs it up with a charged, buzzy atmosphere that makes sitting still feel like a missed opportunity. Nobu Downtown is fine-dining Japanese in a sleek, energetic space on Broadway, where the menu leans into small plates built for sharing. The celebrity-chef brand is global at this point, but the kitchen keeps the standards high.

  23. Rank 303. One White Street

    Seasonal Italian

A converted townhouse in Tribeca that runs its own upstate farm, so the vegetables on your plate were probably pulled from the ground by someone who also designed the menu. One White Street is a contemporary restaurant with both à la carte and tasting menu options, housed in a wood-paneled room with marble and tilework that makes "intimate" feel earned rather than euphemistic. The kitchen leans into bold, produce-forward cooking with a Michelin Guide selection to its name.

  25. Rank 303. Potluck Club

    Cantonese

Hong Kong cinema posters line the walls and a glowing marquee floats above the chef's counter at this high-energy Cantonese American restaurant on Chrystie. The cooking is generous and unfussy, built on good ingredients without making a big speech about it. The XO fried rice and salt and pepper fried chicken pull regulars back repeatedly. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and priced like they mean it.

  27. Gold busts line the walls of this cavernous Upper West Side Italian restaurant, which reads as a deliberate joke at the expense of every shoebox apartment in the neighborhood. The menu runs the familiar Italian playbook, calamari to tiramisu, but the kitchen adds enough texture and brightness to keep it from feeling rote. Generous tables, a big room, and a wine list that rewards lingering make it a natural anchor for the block.

  29. Rank 303. The Lambs Club

    Steakhouse

Black walls, scarlet booths, polished chrome, and a limestone fireplace that anchors the whole room: the Lambs Club is a Midtown steakhouse that knows exactly what it is and leans into it without apology. Dry-aged steaks with a full spread of sauces are the main event, and the pre-theater prix-fixe keeps the curtain-time crowd moving. Inside the Chatwal Hotel, steps from Broadway, it draws the kind of clientele that orders a second cocktail on purpose.

  30. Rank 303. The Odeon

    French

The neon sign out front has been pulling in Tribeca's night owls since the neighborhood was mostly parking lots. This brasserie wears its '80s bones proudly, all red banquettes and buzz, and Vanity Fair once called it "a movie set that doubles as a restaurant," which tracks. The French-ish menu runs burgers to croque monsieur, comfortingly unchanged. The New York Times gave it a star in 2016.

  31. The buss up shut here is the size of a shirt and flaky as a biscuit, which the name, Trinidadian slang for "busted up shirt," promises and the kitchen delivers. This is a roti shop in South Ozone Park, cash and carry, no fuss. The New York Times put it on their 100 Best list, and the A train ride plus the half-mile walk from the station is apparently just part of the ritual now.

  32. Rank 338. % Arabica

    Japanese Coffee Shop

  33. Rank 338. Agi’s Counter

    Eastern European

The walls are painted cupcake pink, and yes, that is a bowl of Hungarian chicken broth with dumplings on the menu next to the crepes. Named for the chef's grandmother, this Crown Heights diner runs on Eastern European comfort food done with real care. The kitchen has a particular way with bread. The bar landed on Punch's Best New Bartenders list, the restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the chef is a James Beard nominee.

  35. Rank 338. Bagel Pub

    NY-Style Bakery

Stainless steel baskets lined with egg everything and pumpernickel everything tell you all you need to know before you've even ordered. This Crown Heights bagel shop turns out chewy, substantial rounds that hold up to the ambitious sandwich menu, where chipotle-bacon cream cheese and asparagus on a breakfast sandwich feel less weird than they should. The weekend line goes out the door, which at a bagel shop is either a warning or a recommendation, depending on how much you've had to eat.

  36. José Andrés runs this steakhouse inside the Ritz-Carlton NoMad like a controlled burn, with an open charcoal and wood-fired kitchen that fills the room with smoke and a sense of occasion that most restaurants wouldn't dare attempt. The cuts run American and Japanese, aged both ways, cooked over fire that does real work rather than just looking good. It landed on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which tracks.

  37. Some of the bagels here are so large they've lost their holes entirely, which feels like a metaphor for Midtown but is actually just breakfast. This no-frills bagel shop near Penn Station runs like a commuter train that actually shows up: the line moves, the bagels come out hot, and the chewy, twisty exterior is what you came for. The New York Times named it among the city's best, and the 8 a.m. crowd would agree without looking up.

  40. The pissaladière, a warm round loaf piled with anchovies and caramelized onions, got a callout from the New York Times, which tells you this Prospect Heights all-day cafe is operating above its pay grade. Coffee and breakfast sandwiches up front give way to a skylit atrium with a small bar, handmade pasta, and refined small plates that shift toward a proper dinner by evening. It reads casual; the cooking quietly disagrees.

  42. Rank 338. Ciao, Gloria

    Contemporary Italian Coffee Shop

The pastry case alone could hold up a line: Italian-style cakes, seasonal danishes, oatmeal cream pies, all housemade. This contemporary Italian coffee shop sits at street level of a Frank Gehry condo on Vanderbilt, which sounds like a setup for a joke, but the place is genuinely warm and busy for good reason. Sweetleaf coffee from Queens, a full kitchen running health-ish and comfort food, and staff who seem to actually mean it when they want you to feel at home.

  43. Rank 338. Çka Ka Qëllu

Glass cases of embroidered regional dress line the walls of this Albanian restaurant on Arthur Avenue, next to the old retail market, where the food runs to burek and cabbage rolls stuffed with ground veal. The Bronx's Albanian community has been quietly growing for decades, and this is where it eats. The menu is the comforting, filling kind, and the brumat sampler is a reasonable place to start if you've never eaten Albanian before.

  45. The xiao long bao are made in-house, and you can watch through the glass as the pleating happens at speed. This is the New York outpost of the global dumpling chain, set in a large underground room near Times Square that runs loud and packed most hours of the day. The New York Times gave it a star in 2024, which did nothing to shorten the line. Expect a menu of soup dumplings in various fillings, a youthful crowd, and prices that won't require a moment of hesitation.

Hart's is a snug Mediterranean restaurant tucked behind the Franklin Avenue subway stairs, serving the kind of cooking that makes you wonder why anyone needs a big kitchen. The slate-blue façade is easy to miss, which is part of the charm.

  53. The gleaming open kitchen is the first thing you see, all stainless steel and quiet drama, before the eight-course French tasting menu even begins. It started as an underground dinner party circuit, which explains the intimate feel that downtown Brooklyn's fancier arrivals don't quite manage. The team walks you through wine pairings course by course. An AAA Four Diamond restaurant, and the room takes that seriously without making you feel graded.

  56. The picture window looks out on a community garden at 9th and Avenue C, and that's about as decorative as this coffee shop gets. Ninth Street Espresso has been a purist espresso spot in Alphabet City since what feels like the dawn of specialty coffee, roasting its own beans out in Long Island City and keeping the menu ruthlessly short. 58. The carriage house bones are the whole point: a fireplace center stage in winter, and windows that swing open onto a cobblestoned side street in summer, letting Barrow Street essentially become part of the room. This is a fine dining institution that New Yorkers bring people to when they want the city to do the heavy lifting, which it does without much trouble. The kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion.

  62. The mission here is explicit: no rainbow bagels, no blueberry bagels, no what Peter Shelsky calls the "shiksa bagel." This Park Slope bagel shop makes small, crust-forward rounds in the New York tradition, though the Sichuan peppercorn bagel, a nod to the long Jewish-Chinese-food alliance, bends the rules just enough. The New York Times named it among the city's best, which is the only endorsement that really matters in this particular argument.

  63. Rank 338. Suited

    Thoughtful Coffee

Concrete floors, black accent walls, and two arc-shaped bars make this FiDi coffee shop feel like it wandered in from Brooklyn and decided to stay. A multi-roaster menu pulls from a rotating cast of serious names, and the espresso machine moonlights for by-the-cup drip. There's a small food menu, housemade pastries, and, naturally, wine. Laptop seating is deliberately scarce, which says everything about what the room is for.

The menu roams past the usual coffee shop lane into slow-cooked lamb and za'atar fries, with a pistachio cappuccino with cardamom for anyone who still wants something to sip. A second location has opened in Downtown Brooklyn, but this is the flagship.

The madeleines come out warm, baked to order, gilded nearly brown at the edges, and the Times critic named them among her favorite dishes of the year without mentioning Proust once, which takes restraint. Zimmi's is a rustic Southern French bistro on Bedford Street, the kind of place that makes butter-and-lemon sponge cake feel like an event without making a production of it. 70. A Peruvian ceviche shop tucked just under the elevated train tracks in Richmond Hill, earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand without much fuss about its location. Tree stumps with cushions serve as patio seating, and Latin music hits you at the door. The leche de tigre arrives in a martini glass with octopus, scallops, and shrimp, and the pork tamal, steamed in bamboo, makes a quiet case for itself from the corner of the menu.

  71. The line out the door in Sunset Park is a reliable fixture regardless of weather. This Sichuan restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and packs its two floors with backless stools and no-frills wooden tables, which keeps the focus on the food. The kitchen goes lighter on the chili oil than you'd expect, coaxing complex flavors rather than just heat. A small pierogi shop tucked into Greenpoint, the part of Brooklyn that still feels like it never left Warsaw. The menu does exactly what it promises, with stuffed dumplings running savory to sweet, plus borscht, golabki, and kielbasa that could carry a meal on its own. Bolesławiec pottery doubles as the serveware, which is either charming or showing off depending on your mood. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a shot of Polish liquor is basically required.

  78. A fish tail peeking out of a metal pot at the next table sets the tone at this no-frills Filipino homestyle spot in Woodside's Little Manila. The kitchen has been around forever, and the cooking skips any fuss: eggplant sealed in pork-threaded omelet, ginger-bright chicken soup, and chicken adobo that The Infatuation called one of New York's defining dishes. The New York Times put it at number 68 on its 2026 list of the city's 100 best restaurants.

  80. The honey cardamom toast alone sends a signal about where the Noortwyck's head is at. This West Village neighborhood restaurant comes from Eleven Madison Park alums, and the menu moves between oysters and cinnamon rolls without blinking. The New York Times gave it two stars. Service has that unhurried quality that makes you feel less like a table and more like a regular, even on your first visit.

  81. The modest exterior on a quiet West Village street gives almost nothing away, which is apparently the point. Inside, 4 Charles Prime Rib is an intimate, old-school steakhouse with deep leather booths and staff who seem to know your name by the second drink. The prime rib comes three ways, the creamed spinach is non-negotiable, and the Valrhona chocolate pie in an Oreo crust lands like a closing argument.

  85. The second-floor dining room on Avenue A reads like a very chic treehouse, all intimacy and low light. This vegan restaurant in the East Village brings a real polish to plant-based cooking, with dishes assembled like small arguments for taking the cuisine seriously. The menu occasionally wanders into paella and mole territory, which is a choice. It's a Michelin Selected spot, and the kind of room where nobody misses the meat.

  88. Birds of a Feather is a Sichuan restaurant in Williamsburg from the couple behind Café China, and the owner designed the dining room herself, which explains why it feels like someone's taste instead of a mood board. The menu runs from numbing heat to sweet-and-sour, so you'll want a few friends and a willingness to over-order. It's on the Chinese Restaurant Awards' Elite 12 list for 2026.

The lamb vindaloo here gets its punch from vinegar, not just chile heat, which is the tell that the chef trained in Goa. This is a Sunnyside neighborhood restaurant, the kind where the menu runs long and the curries arrive properly hot. The tandoor breads are made for dragging through the sauces, and the kitchen takes its time whether or not you're in a hurry. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
