The Best Places in the United States

Eat + Drink + Stay, change section
  1. Rank 4448. Less and More coffee

    Unusual Coffee

A coffee shop built inside a former bus shelter, which explains the glass roof and the wraparound doors still in place. The drinks lean into ingredients like black sesame cream, mugwort, and ube alongside straight espresso for the unconvinced. Pastries come from Bakeshop, and the farmers market crowd pours in on weekends. A fine place to stand at the corner and feel like a local, even if the bus never comes.

  2. Rank 4448. Lilia Comedor

    Pacific Northwest Mexican

Blue corn masa dumplings crowned with black trumpet mushrooms, marigold petals from the chef's garden, and a menu that changes every week: Lilia Comedor moves at the pace of what's actually growing. It's a relaxed sit-down restaurant where Mexican American cooking meets Pacific Northwest ingredients, handled with the kind of technical precision that makes the combination feel inevitable rather than conceptual.

  4. The Garden Oaks flagship is a two-story coffee shop that also runs roasting classes if you'd like to graduate from customer to participant. Cold brew and Spanish lattes are the draws, alongside breakfast croissants that give people a reason to arrive before noon. Luce has spread across Houston and its suburbs, which tells you something about how the neighborhood took to it.

  5. A coffee shop and cocktail bar where the menu refuses to pick a lane, and that's the whole point. Weekend brunch runs from oysters with aguachile granita to chilaquiles and lobster rolls, while the drinks column blurs the line with carajillos and cold-brew shakерatos. The Caesar cups, eaten by hand, are a specific kind of commitment. A Rex Hospitality project in the Sawyer Yards neighborhood.

  6. Monorail is a walk-up espresso window on Pike Street, which means no seats, no laptops, and no one claiming a table for the afternoon. It's among Seattle's earliest espresso carts and has been pulling shots since before the city made coffee its entire personality. Order the nutty, chocolatey house blend or a brighter pourover, then drink it standing on the sidewalk like a local.

  7. Provecho! is a coffee shop and roastery in Logan Heights, working out of a former bread factory that now doubles as an art center. The piloncillo latte gets its brown-butter depth from house-made syrup, and the black sesame latte is toasty in a way that suits the room. You'll sip it while stepping around charred metal sculptures and abstract watercolors, which is a more interesting obstacle course than most coffee lines.

  9. Rank 4448. Royal

    Latin American

The arepa arrives wrapped like a little gift, seared masa around a fried egg, tomato, cotija, and avocado. This all-day Latin American spot on Florida Avenue runs from morning coffee through dinner without any of the fuss, and the price point reflects that. Upstairs, an intimate room with original details fills with regulars chasing the pork empanadas and masa gnocchi with braised beef.

  10. Rank 4448. Santa's Pub

    Beer Bar

A beer-only karaoke bar in a double-wide trailer that stays decorated for Christmas through every month of the year, run by an owner who looks exactly like the name on the door. Expect PBR, Miller Lite, and a seltzer, cash only, with an ATM outside for the optimistic. The karaoke rules are strict: no cussing, smoking, or drinking while you hold the mic. The Infatuation named it one of Nashville's best bars.

  11. The cold drip is made to order and poured over ice in front of you, which is either theater or reassurance depending on how many times you've been handed yesterday's batch somewhere else. This Downtown coffee shop leans into iced drinks and frappe-style blends, with oat milk as the default and brown sugar, honey, or cinnamon doing most of the flavor work. Breakfast tacos and pastries fill out the menu, and grab-and-go bottles cover the days when patience runs short.

  12. Anne Quatrano, who quietly rewired Atlanta's dining scene, runs this market and cafe out of an industrial building that somehow feels like exactly the right place for it. Grab a breakfast biscuit or a fried egg sandwich on a soft roll, pick up hand pies and cookies, then linger by the cheese case and the farm eggs before grabbing something to make your kitchen look more intentional. The New York Times named it one of Atlanta's 25 best restaurants.

  13. Steady State is a Carlsbad coffee shop with enough indoor and outdoor tables that finding a seat to open a laptop and look busy is rarely the hard part. Travelers coming down from LA tend to cross paths with people running up from San Diego, all of them caffeinating. The cold brew is the draw, there's a foamy chai latte with a ginger kick, and sandwich specials rotate. Pastries from the bakery around the corner are the local workaround.

  14. Rank 4448. Steam Espresso Bar

    Stylish Coffee

Garage doors fold open onto a flower-covered patio at this Platt Park coffee shop, which doubles as a rotating gallery for local artists. The line can spill onto the sidewalk on weekends, and no one seems to mind. Locally roasted coffee, fresh-pressed juice, baked goods, and oatmeal keep the options honest. The LoHi outpost occupies an old firehouse, which is a hard aesthetic to argue with.

  15. Light-roast single origins anchor the menu at this Alphabet District coffee shop, where the room manages to feel both polished and lived-in. The shelves are stacked with brewing gear and merch for the home obsessive, and regulars who already know their order fill the space with the easy hum of a neighborhood that's claimed its café. Eater named it among Portland's top coffee shops, which will surprise no one who's been in on a Tuesday morning.

  16. Rank 4448. Stray Pirate

    Dog-Inspired Tiki Bar

The walls of this pirate-themed tiki bar are hung with portraits of distinguished canine buccaneers, which alone tells you something about the commitment level here. The lore involves a cursed ship, a sea witch, and a crew turned into dogs, and it's fully committed to the bit without letting the theatrics crowd out the drinks. Traditional tiki pours sit alongside inventive originals, and the cocktail menu earns its keep on its own terms.

  17. The light pours through floor-to-ceiling windows in a way that makes everyone look like they're having a good morning, even before the coffee. Sunday Press is an all-day café with a drive-through, a solid espresso program, and a menu that stretches to açai bowls and sandwiches for when coffee alone won't cut it. Come evening it quietly becomes a cocktail lounge, which is either convenient or dangerous depending on your schedule.

  20. Muddy Waters and B.B. King both played this no-frills blues bar near Chinatown, which tells you something about the room. Live music runs every night of the week, and between sets the crowd shoots pool and orders pizza to soak up the local craft beer. The seasonal Halloween and Christmas pop-ups have become their own draw, which is a funny fate for a place with that kind of history, but the bar handles both versions of itself with ease.

  22. A bowl of sesame seeds arrives at the table for you to grind yourself before stirring them into the tonkatsu sauce, which tells you what kind of katsu shop this is. The pork is carefully sourced, the panko is made in-house, and the rice comes from Hokkaido. Reservations are hard to come by, which matters in a city where locals can get a perfectly decent plate-lunch katsu for half the price.

  23. Rank 4448. Torque

    Coffee

Torque is a specialty coffee shop on El Cajon Boulevard that treats choosing a roast like a lab exercise. The menu is a four-quadrant matrix, classic or modern, lively or syrupy, and those two decisions are your whole homework for the day. Hardcore coffee people line up to compare espresso notes, and there's a palo santo honey latte with a cedar accent for anyone who'd rather skip the chemistry. Bags of the roasts are for sale.

  24. Rank 4448. Tōv Coffee

    Egyptian Café

This Hawthorne coffee shop brews its Egyptian coffee with cardamom in a tray of hot sand, which makes your usual drip look like it isn't trying. The room is all jewel tones and Persian rugs, and the cardamom latte and rose mocha come with a square of semolina cake. It used to live in a double-decker bus, so the sand tray is a rather natural next step.

  25. Rank 4448. Twelve Mile Limit

    Cocktail Bar

The handwritten sign taped to the door reads "Ring Buzzer, Pull Door," which sets expectations accordingly. What's inside this Mid City cocktail dive runs against every signal the prefab exterior sends: serious drinks, a warm room, and a neighborhood crowd that has clearly been coming here since the block was still drying out. It's relaxed in the way only a bar that doesn't need to prove itself can manage.

  26. Rank 4448. Un Caffe

    Coffee

A frozen coffee bear rides the top of the iced citrus Americano here, keeping the drink cold without diluting it, which tells you everything about how seriously this Midtown coffee shop thinks about a cup. The beans are sourced globally and roasted in-house, and the room runs warm enough that regulars tend to linger. Somewhere between a neighborhood hangout and a serious roaster's project.

  27. URL Coffee is a small First Hill cafe where the stools are made from skateboard decks, which is about as punk as a place this carefully designed is going to get. The room is bright and sleek and reads bigger than it is. The menu skips elaborate custom drinks and puts its energy into house-made sweet cream, stirred into espresso or poured over iced coffee. Seats are scarce, so claim one before ordering the tomato ricotta toast.

  28. Rank 4448. Xela

    Coffee

  29. The dining room is dressed as a Seoul street corner, bus station facades and all, which either tells you everything or nothing until you're sitting inside it with a plate of chicken buldak in front of you. Noori Pocha is a Korean pojangmacha-style restaurant, the kind built around the late-night, post-work food cart tradition, with a menu to match. The New York Times put it on their 2024 Restaurant List, and the K-pop soundtrack makes that feel completely reasonable.

  30. The gumbo arrives with a crab claw jutting out of the bowl like it owns the place, surrounded by fat rounds of okra and a cloud of white rice. This Creole soul food cafe sits down the street from NASA, has signage that will not help you find it, and is on The New York Times Restaurant List. The fried catfish barely fits the plate, and the chef named the whole operation after his grandmothers, which tells you something about the cooking.

  31. Rank 4535. China Live

    Chinese

A high-ceilinged casual dining room with sizzling woks going on what feels like a hawker center's worth of burners at once, China Live sprawls across multiple floors of Chinatown to fit in a retail section, a cocktail bar, and a fine dining room besides. The main floor does Chinese cooking in several regional styles, from scallion breads rolled like cinnamon buns to mapo tofu that earns the word tingly. Chatty tourists fill the place, which seems to suit everyone just fine.

  32. Rank 4535. Edan Bistro

    Modern Basque

Edan Bistro is a casual Basque restaurant in North Miami, set in a room with bare walls and the decor ambitions of a dentist's waiting area. The decorating budget clearly went into the kitchen, which sends out croquetas and ribeyes in the manner of the San Sebastian spots it's compared to. There's dinner, brunch, and an eight-course tasting menu that ends with gooey Basque cheesecake, so you can escalate at your own pace.

  33. Rank 4535. Shotgun Willie's BBQ

    Texas Barbecue

Prime brisket with a peppery bark is the reason this Texas-style barbecue joint started as a food truck and has since moved twice to keep up with demand. The room runs to booths and picnic tables, road signs and Willie Nelson energy. Jalapeño sausage oozes cheese, the pulled pork is smoky, and the green bean side cooked with brisket has its own cult following. A Michelin Selected Restaurant, and the kind of place where strangers talk across tables.

  35. This is a casino-resort buffet dressed for a wedding, with tiered cakes, whole wheels of cheese, and caviar on blinis next to the miniature pancakes. Sixteen cooking stations mean the crepes and eggs Benedict arrive made to order, and reserving the late-morning slot lets brunch slide into the crab-leg dinner shift. Expect a line, a three-figure bill with the extras, and a plate strategy.

  36. The Lao "crack sauce" on the oysters tells you everything about the approach: Southeast Asian flavor logic applied to a seafood-forward menu, from crudos with coconut and chili jam ponzu to whole fish. James Beard Award winner Phila Lorn, who also runs the notoriously hard-to-book Mawn, opened this one in 2025, and it skews a bit pricier and more oceanic than its sibling, with wok-seared noodles keeping things from getting too precious.

  37. Rank 4541. Armoury D.E.

    Eastern European

Hungarian comfort food in a Deep Ellum cocktail bar is a combination nobody asked for and nobody wants to question. Armoury D.E. runs a casual, lived-in room where the drinks are serious, the kitchen leans into paprika-forward territory, and there's usually a free live show happening out back. The burger of the week has a following. Dallas Observer named it home to the city's best Bloody Mary and best bar food, which checks out.

  38. The stripper pole is decorative, full stop. That's the first thing to know about this Cedars bar, the second being that management wears suits while you eat a roller-grill hot dog next to a cigarette machine. It's dark and a little flirty, with pool and darts keeping things grounded. The dirty martini, made with fresh-pressed olive juice and an anchovy-stuffed olive, does a lot of heavy lifting for a place that also sells boxed candy.

  39. Rank 4543. Cordon Bleu

    Vietnamese

The charbroiler at this pocket-size Vietnamese diner on California Street has been smoking up five-spice chicken and pork since the neighborhood was a different place. A dozen seats total, three to a table and nine at the counter, where you can watch the kitchen move with practiced, unhurried efficiency. Combo plates are the whole point, and the imperial rolls are fearsomely crunchy in a way that feels non-negotiable.

  40. This is a velvet-draped, 1920s-style cocktail parlor, reached by slipping behind the doughnut stand inside Aria's food hall, which is about as speakeasy as a doughnut counter can make you feel. Live jazz fills the room most nights, and the drinks arrive with props: mushroom-shaped glasses on a mossy board, a Manhattan in a cigar box. Dress for a date, and bring someone who won't mind sharing the dry ice.

  41. Rank 4543. Lardo

  42. Rank 4546. Le Suprême

    Brasserie

Le Suprême is a Parisian-style brasserie on the ground floor of the old Book Tower, which means you eat escargot under the kind of ceilings that make you sit up straighter. There's a seafood tower, a proper martini service, and traditional absinthe, so dress like someone with a reason to celebrate. The pastry kitchen sits behind glass in the lobby, and watching it work is a fine way to talk yourself into the profiteroles.

  43. The shelves of imported flour, olive oil, and canned goods are the first thing you navigate on the way to ordering lunch, which about sums up what Andreoli is: a north Scottsdale Italian grocer where the sit-down dining room is just as serious as the pantry. The chef hails from Calabria but ranges freely across the regions, and the whiteboard specials tend toward the kind of dishes that take some explaining. A James Beard nominee.

  44. Rank 4548. Billy Can Can

    Texas American

The deviled eggs come six ways, no two alike, which tells you a lot about how this upscale dining saloon in Victory Park operates. Wild game and seasonal Southern cooking are the through lines, from venison tartare to wild boar lasagna, and the Texas wine list runs deeper than you'd expect anywhere, let alone here. The room leans into its saloon bones without winking too hard at them.

    Vegetarian Latin American

The cocktails here are built from kitchen scraps, tinctures and syrups made from what most places throw away, which tells you everything about how seriously this modern Latin vegan restaurant takes its zero-waste kitchen. The menu swings from Yucatecan pumpkin-seed dips to a jackfruit Cubano, and the seitan carne asada crunchwrap is an unironic love letter to Taco Bell that somehow works completely on its own terms.

    Wine Bar

The wine list runs from skin-contact naturals to premier cru Burgundy, which tells you this Midtown wine bar is not trying to be one thing. It's been around forever, long enough to have shaped Houston's wine culture before anyone here was talking about orange wine. The cheese and charcuterie plate is an honest reason to stay for a second glass. The room is low-key and comfortable, the kind of place regulars treat as a standing appointment.

  50. Lamb barbacoa, slow-cooked in a specialized oven built to mimic an underground fire pit lined with maguey leaves, is the whole reason this roomy Chula Vista restaurant exists. It's a build-your-own taco situation: fresh tortillas, salsas, garnishes, and a rich lamb consomme on the side. The kitchen has been doing essentially one thing for decades, and the zucchini flower and huitlacoche quesadillas are the only real detour worth taking.

The kitchen moves from overnight oats and baked goods at breakfast through deviled eggs and a caviar sandwich later on, which is a pretty wide range for a room you could cross in six steps.

  53. The house-baked rolls have a crust that shatters on contact, sending crumbs in every direction before giving way to pork cold cuts, pâté, and pickled daikon. This bustling Dorchester sandwich shop also stocks Vietnamese groceries, pastries, and hot prepared foods, so people tend to leave with more than they planned. 55. Rank 4553. Bertha's Kitchen

    Lowcountry Soul Food

The fried chicken arrives in a styrofoam container, still crackling from the fryer, and costs around eight dollars with two sides. This counter-service Lowcountry soul food spot has been an old-school institution on Meeting Street for years, run by the daughters of the woman who started it. The okra stew tastes like it was never meant to be written down in a recipe.

  56. The staff will advise you not to order the hot chicken above mild, and they mean it. Bolton's is a no-frills neighborhood soul food counter that predates the hot chicken craze by a decade, which earns it a certain authority. The fried catfish, ordered mild, makes a strong case for itself as the move here, and mild still has something to prove. A Nashville institution, in the most unpretentious sense possible.

  57. Rank 4553. Bongos Cafe

    Caribbean

  58. Rank 4553. Cafe Yaya

    Levantine Café

Cafe Yaya is an all-day neighborhood cafe in Lincoln Park from the team behind Galit, and it opens early enough to catch the weekday breakfast crowd. The menu blends Levantine, French, and Southern ideas, which sounds like a lot until you meet the smoked lamb bacon in a BLT. Order at the counter, stay for the lemon pound cake, and expect a casual, low-key morning that stays well under fine-dining money. Eater has it on its Chicago breakfast list.

  59. Rank 4553. Ceibo

    Uruguayan

The ceibo tree blooms at the bottom of South America, and this dimly lit Adams Morgan restaurant takes its name and its whole spirit from there. The kitchen centers on asado, meats cooked over open flame, with Uruguayan oysters topped with farmed caviar and Patagonian shrimp filling out the seafood side. Sweet potatoes turn up in starters, desserts, and cocktails. Downstairs, a late-night bar pours South American wines and spirits until the weekend crowd thins out.

  60. Rank 4553. Celeste

    Peruvian

The room glows cobalt blue under a neon sign, which is either pretentious or perfect depending on how the ceviche lands, and here it lands. This Peruvian restaurant in Somerville times the lime marinade to the minute before serving, so the fish stays clean and bright rather than mealy. The lomo saltado lets you call the doneness of the beef, a detail that says something about how seriously the kitchen is paying attention.

  61. Rank 4553. City House

    Southern Italian

Germantown was still dozing when this Italian-Southern trattoria and pizza spot opened, and it has been packing the room ever since. The kitchen treats Southern ingredients as native Italian speakers, so cavatelli gets field peas, cornmeal-crusted trout gets salsa verde, and summer pies get loaded with Tennessee tomatoes or ripe peaches. Leave room for dessert; the pastry chef has a following of her own.

  62. This is a Coney Island diner in Southwest Detroit, which means a grilled dog in natural casing, chili sauce, onions, and a stripe of yellow mustard, all handed over a counter lined with swivel stools. It's tiny, long, narrow, and has been feeding night-shift workers and the hungover for ages. Breakfast is the sleeper order, and asking for the hash browns well-done is the only advice you'll need. Cheap, quick, and cash-register simple.

    Cocktail Bar

Eight Row Flint is a whiskey bar in a former mid-century dry cleaner in the Heights, and the back bar is stocked like it's expecting a long siege. The drink menu runs to a small-novella 25 pages, there are big casks of the good stuff, and you can rent a locker for your own bottles if you want to be That Whiskey Person. The patio is huge, the cheeseburger and wings keep the evening honest, and the margaritas get a lot of press.

    Bistro

Low-lit dining room, white tablecloths, a bar packed with people eating full meals, and a line forming outside before the door even opens. FIG is a neighborhood bistro running French technique through a Lowcountry pantry, and locals have been steering visitors here for years. The kitchen leans hard into seafood, working whatever the coast gives them that season. The ricotta gnocchi has its own quiet following on the appetizer menu.

  66. Floriole is a Lincoln Park bakery and cafe that started life at a farmers' market and never lost the habit of making everything from scratch. The morning crowd treats the place as a shared office with better pastry, laptops open beside the croissants and sticky buns. Come lunchtime, a ham-and-butter baguette shows up for anyone who has finished their emails or at least stopped looking at them.

  70. Grand Prize is a two-story dive where the interior is blacked out so thoroughly that the neon is mostly there to help you read the drink menu. Happy hour offers a "Happy Meal," which is a beer and a shot, and the pool tables are good for losing to a stranger. The kitchen rotates through bar food, birria tacos one week and chili-cheese dogs the next, and the terrace is where you go to confirm the sun still exists.

  72. Kevin Gillespie of Top Chef fame runs this chaotic, dinner-party-style restaurant where the menu is different every time and the kitchen is clearly having too much fun. Dishes come out family-style, leaning experimental, the kind of place where a tart topped with strawberry Pop Rocks makes complete sense by the third bite. Good for groups who don't need to know what they're ordering before they show up.

A steam table loaded with rendang and jackfruit stew is the first thing you see, and the family photos taped to the walls make the second impression. This South Philly Indonesian spot is a home-cooking operation in the most literal sense, now run by the founder's daughter. Rice platters come heaping, sambal comes with the order, and extra scoops are fifty cents, which is the kind of pricing that earns genuine loyalty.

    Edomae Sushi

A 16-seat sushi counter in Sellwood where the omakase is more of a starting point than a fixed path, you can build on it with à la carte nigiri or skip the set entirely. The fish skews edomae, the sourcing is serious, and the prices are modest enough that the place fills quickly with people who figured that out early. The New York Times put it on their Portland list, and it earns the mention without any fanfare.

  77. The spacious bar is built to look like a cantina from the highlands of Jalisco, which tells you a lot about the ambition here. This sit-down taqueria in Southwest Detroit is the brick-and-mortar flagship from a family that has run taco trucks through the neighborhood for close to two decades. Carnitas, tacos al pastor, pork ribs in salsa verde, and a full run of margaritas and palomas round out a menu that earns its place alongside the trucks.

  78. Rank 4553. Lei Low

    Tiki Bar

Lei Low is a tiny tiki bar in the Heights where the grass cloth, palm trees, and tropical tchotchkes do most of the travel planning. The rum selection is deep enough to require a plan, and the Navy Grog and Singapore Sling are on hand for people who like their classics served with a tiny umbrella's worth of conviction. Large-format drinks are built for splitting, which makes this a good place to find out who in your group can share.

    Bistro

The indigo exterior on King Street is your first hint that something deliberate is happening inside. Maison is a Parisian French bistro where the black-and-white tile, low club booths, and platters of escargot do most of the convincing before the menu arrives. The kitchen leans into modern French technique with Lowcountry ingredients, so steak frites shares space with seasonal terrines and housemade black truffle sausages. It bustles most nights, which feels correct.

This neighborhood bar in Fulton keeps things loose and colorful while running a cocktail program weighted heavily toward tequila and mezcal. The frozen drinks are a genuine draw, and the food menu swings wide enough, tacos, burgers, aguachiles, that no one in the group goes home grumpy.

Navarre is a candlelit neighborhood restaurant on NE 28th where you order by checking boxes on a clipboard with a pencil, like a very pleasant pop quiz. The menu roams the globe in small plates, nearly everything comes in half portions, and the wine list runs about 80 glasses deep. Weekend brunch means eggs ten ways, a mountain of crusty bread, and specials served with oversized vintage spoons. It's on Portland Monthly's and Time Out's best-of lists.

  83. Norikase is a ten-seat omakase counter tucked into a Tinseltown strip mall, the kind of setting where you double-check the address twice. The two-hour meal runs on high-end fish shipped from Japan, and strangers at the bar end up chatting, usually somewhere around the question of whether this is still Duval. A miso soup with a sinigang streak nods to the local Filipino community. Eater and The Infatuation both keep it on their Jacksonville lists.

    Pizzeria

Wood-fired pizzas rotate with the season at this Italian-American restaurant on a tree-lined stretch of Winter Park, where vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, and caramel leather booths make the room feel like someone spent real money on "rustic." The kitchen leans heavily on the pizza oven, and the toppings tend toward the unexpected. A Michelin Selected restaurant, it pulls a reliably well-dressed crowd that fills the central bar as steadily as the booths.

  90. Rank 4553. Ravello

    Modern Italian

The terrace alone, lush and open-air, makes a case for lingering over a second glass. This fine dining room inside the Four Seasons runs on family recipes from the chef's own upbringing, which gives the modern Italian menu a warmer footing than the sleek, high-ceilinged space might suggest. Pastas are made in-house, the limoncello is too, and the crowd here dresses like they have dinner reservations, because they do.

  91. Orsay is an Avondale brasserie where French classics and Southern comfort share a menu, so bouillabaisse and chicken and dumplings coexist without a custody battle. Servers still fold your napkin when you step away, a courtesy most of the city has abandoned. There's a vegan menu in a cuisine built on butter, plus a boeuf wellington that needs a day's notice, so plan like it's a small wedding.

  92. RingSide is a white-tablecloth steakhouse where the onion rings arrive piping hot and the martinis arrive cold enough to pass for a legal argument. The bar is sunken and dimly lit, with little booths made for settling in, and the Blazers are usually on, losing quietly. The menu runs to three kinds of Japanese Wagyu and a wine list the size of a hymnal. It also holds AAA Three Diamonds. Dress like you're staying.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
