A stream runs alongside the terrace at this rural Worcestershire gastropub, which reopened after a full refurbishment and is now drawing people out from the city. The chef came up through Carters of Moseley, and the menu sits comfortably between proper pub food and something a bit more considered: battered haddock sits beside seabass with lobster bisque, and neither feels out of place. Menus turn with the seasons, the interior is cosy, and the desserts reportedly justify the drive.

Trattoria
A former Victorian pub on Columbia Road, now a snug regional Italian trattoria where the cooking draws on Pugliese heritage and time spent in Emilia-Romagna. The portions are generous, the vibe is unpretentious, and the wine list was built with the chef's father at Artigiano Imports. Thirty covers go fast, so most people discover the bar seats or the front terrace by necessity rather than preference.

Seafood Basque
The stainless steel frying counters and Formica floors are still here from the chip shop this used to be, but the kitchen is now doing Basque-inflected seafood with serious intent. Order vermouth over ice at the front bar, or book one of the handful of tables out back for something more substantial. The chips bravas, made with beef dripping, have acquired the kind of following that makes regulars territorial about them. It landed on the National Restaurant Awards list in 2026.

Rustic Italian
A converted grade II listed farmhouse in Kent countryside, Updown is a restaurant with rooms where everything hits the wood fire in an open kitchen. The menu tilts Italian, kept deliberately short, and changes with whatever the land and season allow. Ruth Leigh, daughter of Rowley Leigh, and her partner run it with a looseness that feels earned rather than lazy. The wine list follows the same logic: producers they love, a few local vineyards, no padding.

Modern British
A stripped-back dining room inside the Whitworth Locke Hotel on Princess Street, where the kitchen counter runs long and the cooking leans into cold cuts, whole fish, and homemade pies without apology. Shaun Moffat, who made his name up the road at The Edinburgh Castle, brings the same produce-led instinct here: seasonal, regional, British, and genuinely unfussy. The National Restaurant Awards put it at number 67 in 2026.

There's no sign outside, just a row of Victorian townhouses on a quiet South Kensington side street, which is exactly how the regulars prefer it. Number Sixteen is a boutique hotel holding a Michelin Key, part of Firmdale's calmer Townhouse Collection. Antiques sit alongside modern art, beds are large and linens serious, and the conservatory garden out back is the kind of thing you didn't know you needed. The honor bar by the fireplace seals it.

A former bank vault now houses the spa, which tells you everything about how Gleneagles does things in Edinburgh. This luxury hotel and members' club on St Andrew Square runs Victorian grandeur through a very modern sensibility, with the rooftop bar at Lamplighters offering views over the square's statues below. Overnight guests get most of the perks of membership. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

A Georgian manor on 500 acres of Hampshire countryside, about an hour from London, where the Four Seasons has planted its flag in classic English country-house territory, to some skeptics' horror. The spa occupies the old stable block, there's an indoor-outdoor pool, and the beds are, by all accounts, obscene. It holds a Michelin Key. What it trades in eccentric charm it recoups in service that never has an off day.

Nacho Carbonell's ceiling installation, which calling a chandelier would be an understatement, sets the tone for this Italian restaurant inside a contemporary art space in north Kensington. The dining room itself reads as a permanent exhibition, with design-forward furniture and garden seating when the weather cooperates. The kitchen leans into traditional Italian cooking, lighter on fat than the classics usually allow, with pasta that earns the attention it gets.

Eighteen miles from London, somehow genuinely feeling like countryside, The Grove is a Georgian country-house hotel with a contemporary wing bolted on and enough activities to exhaust even the most enthusiastic family. Golf, spa, archery, outdoor cinema in summer, a kids' club that actually works. The Mansion rooms lean historical; the West Wing runs more modern. Either way, the comforts are there without making a fuss about it. A Forbes Four Star property.

A butler meets you at the door and decanted drinks replace the minibar, which tells you most of what you need to know. Cliveden is a grand country house hotel in Berkshire, the Italianate pile that hosted British monarchs and, rather less formally, the Profumo affair. Rooms are named after past guests, the formal dining room expects you to dress for it, and if the National Trust day-trippers crowd the gardens, the riverside Spring Cottage exists for exactly that problem.

Cocktail Bar
Named for the 360-foot artesian well buried under the hotel's foundations, this cocktail bar at The Langham is all rattlesnake-leather floors, silver-leaf walls, and timber chandeliers, a David Collins interior that reads more cabinet of curiosities than hotel drinking room. The drinks match the room's ambition. It holds a Pinnacle Guide pin and a five-star rating from Difford's Guide, which is about as serious as cocktail credentials get.

Local artists once traded paintings for a place to sleep, which is how this Regency Square boutique hotel ended up with rooms no interior designer would have dared plan. Four joined Georgian townhouses in the heart of Bath, commissioned by a marquis and now a boutique hotel with a Michelin Key. The rooms vary in size because nobody ripped out the original floor plans, so the bones are pleasingly odd and the architectural details are intact. A married couple runs it, which shows. Denmark Street is where the Stones cut their first album, where Bowie and Hendrix drank, where the Sex Pistols squatted in a mews house you can now actually sleep in. Chateau Denmark is a hotel that leans into all of it, hard, spreading across 16 buildings with rooms ranging from darkly Victorian to overtly rock-and-roll. No two are the same, the theming is theatrical, and the comfort level is considerably higher than Johnny Rotten left it.

The guest bathroom has no walls, which tells you exactly what kind of hotel this is. Philippe Starck and Ian Schrager turned a former Sixties fabric company office block into a boutique hotel where sleigh beds sit beneath ceiling-mounted oil paintings and rugs are patterned after Voltaire's letters. Downstairs, a Dalí-inspired red-lipped sofa anchors the lobby and a glowing onyx bar does the rest of the talking.

A crimson Victorian townhouse tucked into a cul-de-sac off St. James's Street, this boutique hotel is part of a German luxury group quietly doing a convincing impression of a nineteenth-century gentlemen's club. The sixty rooms are snug but deeply comfortable, and the real atmosphere pools in the small side-rooms and antechambers, where the conspiratorial hush feels less decorated and more inherited. The bar and a fine dining restaurant round things out.

A courtyard draped in jasmine and passionflower sits at the heart of this 33-room Fitzrovia boutique hotel, and the mood inside matches: rich textures, theatrical lighting, and a color palette that suggests Victorian London by way of Rangoon. Named for a hallucinogenic root favored by occultists, it wears its strangeness proudly. The penthouse has a rooftop Jacuzzi under a retractable roof, for when a dark, moody room simply isn't enough.

Fifteen Georgian townhouses stitched into one on Half Moon Street, which is about as Mayfair as Mayfair gets. This boutique hotel leans hard into its Oscar Wilde associations and a fox mascot that turns up everywhere, filling rooms with saturated colors, country-house warmth, and custom bath products. The Dandy Bar's idiosyncratic wine list and cocktail menu give guests a compelling reason not to wander far for a nightcap.

The bathrooms alone make a case for the place: bespoke tiles and stone-carved sinks that nod to Fitzrovia's Art Deco bones without cosplaying a museum. This Fitzrovia boutique hotel carries that Victorian-meets-1920s thread through the rooms, with curved furnishings and polished steel keeping things from tipping into period-piece territory. There's a brasserie, a low-lit basement bar, and a wellness floor with a hydrotherapy pool and salt therapy room for when London gets to be a lot.

A country house hotel in the New Forest where the historical bones are confident enough that nobody felt the need to gild them. The interior is crisp and contemporary without erasing the house, the staff are warm without being theatrical, and the restaurant, led by Angela Hartnett, keeps things resolutely unfussy. The spa runs just luxe enough. Families are welcome, though it never tips into chaos. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

Sir Edwin Lutyens designed the building, and the renovation was careful enough that he'd probably still recognize it. This is a hotel that earns its postcode: the British Museum is one street over, and the whole literary weight of Bloomsbury presses agreeably against the windows. Rooms keep their Georgian bones while adding Nespresso machines and proper bathrooms. Dalloway Terrace handles upscale British fare, and afternoon tea is the obvious move before another lap of the museum.

The only L'Occitane spa in the UK happens to sit inside a country house hotel a short walk from Bath's city center, which feels either coincidental or very on-brand for Bath. The original Scotland Yard building, the Edwardian brick one the Met left behind when it outgrew the name, is now a luxury hotel in Hyatt's Unbound Collection. A 40-room boutique hotel on a Covent Garden street where a publisher once housed Orwell and Le Carré, which is either charming history or a lot of pressure to put on a hotel bar. Terence Conran converted a Victorian warehouse into this boutique hotel, and the math is deliberately skewed: seventeen rooms and suites to three restaurants, including a rooftop grill open year-round. A quiet residential street between Harrods and Hyde Park is a strange place to find a boutique hotel that has been around forever, but The Capital pulls it off. Rooms are individually dressed with antique furniture and original artwork, and the eleven apartments and a two-floor penthouse let longer-stay guests keep hotel services while pretending they live here. Tom Brown's 28-cover restaurant downstairs makes the address worth knowing on its own.

A members'-club-style hotel a short walk from Buckingham Palace, the Guardsman keeps its dining room and bar strictly for residents and their guests, so you'll never compete with a wedding party for your own table. The mottled-brick exterior is sober grey trimmed in gold, and inside, Art Deco slides into something warmer, with neutrals, gem tones, and heated bathroom floors even in the smallest rooms.

A boutique hotel in Belgravia that leans into mid-century darkness rather than the usual pale-and-pristine London luxury look. The design team threaded the needle between American polish and British restraint, with a bar terrace done properly, a cigar humidor, and an Italian restaurant calibrated for embassy-district neighbours who never order off the menu. The kind of address where the local postcode does half the heavy lifting.

Room names like Shoebox, Snug, Roomy, and Biggy tell you everything about the Hoxton's register: a design hotel that's self-aware enough to skip the marble lobby theater. The look is industrial-retro, a little rough around the edges in a considered way, and the rooms come with handmade mattresses and mini-fridges stocked at supermarket prices rather than minibar ones. Rondo, the in-house restaurant, runs from breakfast through dinner with a serious wine list.

A row of Georgian townhouses a short walk from the British Museum, folded together into a boutique hotel that feels more like a well-appointed private members' club than a place that lets strangers sleep in it. The rooms are each slightly different, which the original architecture enforces, and the eclectic mix of antique and contemporary pieces throughout gives the whole thing a curated rather than decorated feeling. A Victorian manor sitting right on the edge of a Highland loch, with turrets and a brick facade that look lifted from a Romantic painting, The Torridon is a Forbes Four Star hotel in one of Scotland's more uncompromising landscapes. Dukes Bar is a small, old-school martini room tucked inside a St. James's hotel, where Ian Fleming drank and "shaken, not stirred" is said to have been born. The atrium alone justifies a detour: a spiraling ramp that reads as a Guggenheim-meets-ice-cream-cone dropped inside a Victorian railway hotel. The red brick facade on Liverpool Street gives nothing away, but inside you get bamboo-filled galleries, fireplaces the size of closets, and plasterwork from another century. Rooms are sensibly businesslike, the minibar is complimentary (booze aside), and the service runs warm without the attitude City hotels sometimes breed.

The Victorian terracotta facade on Russell Square looks almost exactly as it did when it opened, which makes stepping into the lobby, with its mosaic floors, columns, and arches, feel like a reasonable time-travel experiment. Conran-designed rooms with cashmere-wrapped mattresses and Italian marble bathrooms sit a short walk from the Barbican in the City, which is increasingly where Londoners actually want to spend their evenings. Six Georgian townhouses face the street with their original façades intact, which is a reasonable disguise for a luxury boutique hotel that can't quite decide whether it belongs to Shoreditch or the City. Six individually designed suites in an 18th-century townhouse, each one a confident collision of bold color and antique furniture. This is Paul Ainsworth's boutique hotel a few blocks up from Padstow harbor, running a little quieter than the waterfront while staying walkable from everything. Breakfast arrives as a hamper, and the occasional sweet from his fine-dining No6 turns up too, which is a gracious way to remind you who's in charge. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.
