  4. Rank 1476. The Buena Vista

    Cocktail Bar

The bar faces San Francisco Bay, with Alcatraz and the Golden Gate framed in the windows, which does a lot of the work before you even sit down. The Buena Vista is an old-school saloon that claims credit for introducing Irish coffee to America, and the bar staff still make them in assembly-line batches. Come at 9am or midnight; the order is the same either way. It won the Spirited Awards' Timeless U.S. Award in 2024, which is about right.

  8. Rank 1476. Tiki-Ti

    Polynesian Cocktail Bar

A tiki bar so small it was once a violin-repair shop, which tells you everything about the square footage and nothing about the ambition. Three generations of the same family have been pouring Mai Tais under the thatched canopy on Sunset since the sixties, and they do not serve beer or wine, so don't ask. Modern tiki bars tend to look like this place photoshopped. The original is still doing it straight.

  11. A crawfish gumbo gravy poured over egg foo young tells you everything about this Asian American diner in Houston Heights. Named for the chef's parents, Agnes and Sherman blends Chinese and American comfort food into something scallion waffles and pandan French toast feel natural sitting on the same menu. The cocktail list leans equally sideways. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant, and the room fills fast with people who figured that out early.

  12. The wood-grain bar wraps around the pasta station, where sheets are rolled, cut, and hung to dry in full view, which tells you everything about what Sarah Grueneberg is doing at this West Loop Italian spot. Counter stools fill by 5:30, and the regulars who claim them rarely need menus. The cucina tipica runs deeper than pasta, but the pasta is why people talk. A Michelin Selected restaurant.

  13. The whole room is built to look like the cargo hold of a 19th-century ship, portholes and all, which sets the stakes early at this immersive tiki bar on Indian School. The cocktail menu runs from classics to the team's own riffs on the genre, leaning into the full theatrical bit without apologizing for it. Phoenix New Times named it the city's top tiki bar, and the Spirited Awards put the bar team among the top four in the U.S.

  14. Rank 1531. Don Antonio

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The Montanara Starita comes out of the kitchen lightly fried, sauced, and finished in the wood-fired oven, which is a more interesting origin story than most Midtown pizzas can claim. This Neapolitan pizza shop off Times Square is the New York branch of a Naples institution, run by a chef who grew up in the family craft. Ranked seventh on 50 Top Pizza USA, it draws a crowd that skips the tourist traps one block over and knows exactly what they came for.

  15. Rank 1532. Nixta

    Masa-Driven Mexican

  16. The vaulted ceilings and carved stone arches of a 19th-century bank are still very much the point at this Penn Quarter hotel, and the Michelin Guide recognized it with one Key. The bones are stately, the renovation decidedly less reverent, with D.C.'s history reinterpreted as design inspiration rather than preserved under glass. It lands somewhere between grand civic institution and a hotel that knows it's allowed to have fun.

  17. Rank 1534. Barbs B Q

    Central Texas Barbecue

Barbs B Q is a weekend-only BBQ shop in Lockhart that draws hours-long lines on Saturdays and Sundays, which is the only time the pitmaster opens the doors. The compact menu runs classic smoked meats with unexpected turns, like pork ribs finished with lime zest and turkey with a black pepper rub. Texas Monthly, Bon Appétit, and the New York Times have all taken notice, and the Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  18. Rank 1535. Gado Gado

    Indonesian

The name means "mix mix" in Indonesian, which is either a promise or a warning depending on your appetite. This eclectic Southeast Asian restaurant from Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly blends Indonesian and Malaysian flavors with bistro instincts, dry-aged tartare showing up alongside rendang and satay. The rice table feast gives the fullest picture of what the kitchen is doing. A James Beard nominee and a New York Times pick.

  19. A Dallas hotel set inside an old cotton and oil magnate's estate, where the wood-paneled bar runs jazz three nights a week and afternoon tea happens in the library as if that's perfectly normal. Thomas Pheasant's redesign kept the French doors and crown molding and added the kind of modern comfort that makes you forget you're sleeping in a piece of Texas history. Miron Crosby cowboy boots in your room are a nice touch.

  21. Mediterranean-style resort spread across a hillside outside San Diego, with a Tom Fazio golf course, a spa, six restaurants, and four pools wired with underwater speakers for reasons you will either love or find deeply alarming. Guest rooms lean into the fantasy, with marble soaking tubs, fireplaces, and balconies big enough to mean it. A Forbes Four Star property that covers every angle, including an Explorer's Club for kids so the adults can actually use the cabanas.

    The awards

  22. Rank 1539. Heritage Barbecue

    Central Texas Barbecue

The smoke from California white oak drifts into the parking lot long before you reach the door, which is by design and also a warning to arrive early. Heritage is a Texas barbecue shop in San Juan Capistrano where the line forms fast and brisket runs out faster. The chef earned a James Beard nomination and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the trays of charred, glistening meat make both feel self-explanatory. Save room for the banana pudding.

  23. Rank 1539. Queen's English

    Modern Cantonese

A yellow neon sign greets you at the door of this small Columbia Heights restaurant, and everything inside quietly contradicts it: white floors, blue banquettes, geometric screens carving out private nooks. The menu runs through modern Hong Kong cooking, the kind where high-heat wok technique meets unexpected pairings. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the chef picked up a James Beard nomination for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  24. Rank 1541. Merci

    Lowcountry Bistro

The dining room, tucked into a 19th-century building with an interior by Helen Rice, has the feel of a very elegant private residence where you happened to get a table. It's a European-leaning seasonal restaurant, the kind where the pasta is made with care and the slow-cooked chicken tastes like someone started it two days ago. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant, and coveted enough that regulars wear their reservations with quiet pride.

  25. Liberace's mirrored Nickelodeon piano sits in the lobby next to a hovering Holos sculpture and a cluster of pink elephants floating in painted bubbles, which is a normal amount of art for a hotel check-in. The Conrad is the largest in its brand, a full-service Las Vegas hotel tower where the rooms lean into the same bold palette. The casino, a 5,000-seat theater, and 40 places to eat and drink are all on the same campus.

    The awards

  26. Wood-paneled lobby, fresh flowers, chandelier light, and parlor furniture that signals you've arrived somewhere that takes comfort seriously. This West End hotel runs on the classic Ritz-Carlton formula: big rooms by D.C. standards, Frette linens, soaking tubs, and Asprey products in marble bathrooms. The minibar comes stocked with champagne, which is either indulgent or practical depending on your afternoon.

  27. Olson Kundig designed the building, and you can feel it: forest greens, midnight blues, velvety textures, and lobby shelves stacked with books about treehouses and cabins. This hotel sits a short walk from Pike Place Market, threading the needle between Pacific Northwest rusticity and a sleek urban nightlife pedigree. The rooms lean masculine and warm, with furnishings that look comfortably broken in rather than showroom-fresh.

  28. Two blocks off the Strip, this all-suite hotel skips the casino floor entirely, which means no slot machines, no cigarette fog, and no one blocking your path with a yard-long cocktail at nine in the morning. The 64-story gold-and-glass tower is exactly as understated as it sounds, with Swarovski chandeliers and marble lobbies doing the heavy lifting. Good option if you want Vegas proximity without full immersion in the spectacle.

  29. Duck dusted with jerk seasoning, served alongside rice and peas and Haitian pikliz, tells you what kind of neighborhood restaurant this is: one where the African diaspora, South Asia, and the Caribbean are all at the same table. The team behind Comfort Kitchen, one Ghanaian, one Nepali, traces how ingredients moved across continents through trade and forced migration. A James Beard nominee, and a New York Times pick for Boston's best right now.

  30. Ski-in/ski-out access to Big Sky Resort, three fly-fishing rivers nearby, and a Tom Weiskopf golf course next door keep the itinerary full at this Forbes Five Star, Michelin Key mountain resort. When you come in from the cold, the walls of windows, deep leather chairs, and roaring fires make sure you know you're still in Montana, just a warmer version of it. The spa runs to 11,000 square feet, in case the slopes weren't enough.

    The awards

  31. Rank 1548. Dame

    Seafood

A quaint seafood restaurant on MacDougal where the wine list is sorted by whether you'd rather be James Bond or Austin Powers, and that tracks with everything else here. The fish and chips, a hake fillet in lacey batter, is what put the place on the map when it was still a pop-up. The menu turns with the season, the room is small and blue-and-white, and getting a table requires actual planning.

  32. There's no sign at the end of the drive, which tells you something about the clientele. This Forbes Five Star Adirondack camp resort sits on a private peninsula of Upper Saranac Lake, stone fireplaces and twig furniture in every room, and guests dress for black-tie dinner twice a week around a communal table. Snowshoeing, croquet, and champagne at 4 a.m. are all equally on offer, which is roughly the point.

    The awards

  33. A Forbes Five Star ranch resort spread across 6,600 acres between the Pintler and Sapphire ranges, where the dress code is essentially "do you own a vest." Granite Lodge anchors it all, a two-story stone and timber building with a massive hearth, game tables, and guest rooms named for horse breeds and firearms. Days go toward trail riding or skiing; evenings toward Missoula Mules beside the fire, which is a perfectly reasonable way to end up in Montana.

    The awards

  34. A converted 1901 factory building in Williamsburg with 13-foot ceilings, original wood beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Manhattan skyline. The Wythe holds a Michelin Key, and the in-house credentials are real: Le Crocodile, the French brasserie downstairs, draws its own crowd, and Bar Blondeau on the sixth floor has views that make the room feel optional. Industrial-chic without the irony quotes, and about as Williamsburg as a hotel gets.

  35. Rank 1552. Cochon

    Cajun & Creole

A converted warehouse in the Central Business District, Cochon does Southern cooking with a Louisiana accent: wood-fired oysters, fried alligator, gumbo loaded with house-made andouille, and rabbit and dumplings pulled from the chef's family recipes. The cracklins with Steen's cane syrup make a strong case for arriving hungry. The whiskey and bourbon list is long enough to make the decision feel important. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  37. A little bungalow turned Peruvian ceviche bar where the kitchen leans hard into citrus-cured fish, leche de tigre in several forms, and a pisco sour menu that makes the decision-making easy. The cooking draws from the owners' Peruvian roots, and the flavors are bright and punchy in a way that earns that description. A James Beard nominee two years running, and the cute patio fills up fast.

  39. Reclaimed wood and polished concrete set the tone at this eco-minded luxury resort on Collins Avenue, where the design borrows from surf culture and the building materials were sourced before the Instagram grid was even a concept. It occupies a full city block of beachfront with Atlantic views on one side and the Biscayne Bay skyline on the other, and carries a Michelin Key. The crowd arrives with reusable water bottles and very good luggage.

  40. Kelly Wearstler folded a 1920s Spanish Colonial building into a new construction on Wilshire, which is a neat trick and exactly the kind of thing you notice when you check in. The boutique hotel sits a few blocks from the beach, rooms running bright whites and sand-colored fabrics with vintage furniture doing its best to look casual about it. The rooftop bistro draws nightly crowds and Surya Spa has a following. Michelin awarded it one Key.

  41. The pink stucco towers have been sitting at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain long enough that the mountains feel like a backdrop the resort commissioned. This Forbes Five Star destination resort sprawls across thousands of acres and treats activity planning as a competitive sport: falconry, zip lines, golf, fly fishing, pickleball, a movie theater, and bowling all coexist without apology. "Bottle Alley," a glassed-in Prohibition-era wine cache, lines the walls of the main building.

  42. House-pressed coconut milk in the curries is the kind of detail that tells you everything about Talat Market's approach. This no-reservations Thai restaurant in Summerhill pairs Georgia produce with traditional Thai flavors in a room that splits the difference between industrial and vintage. The chef earned a James Beard nomination in 2024. Go for the curries and the som tum, and expect heat you'll want to chase with the fruit salad.

  43. Savory rosette cookies arrive first at most tables, which tells you something about the chef's sense of humor and ambition. Atoma is a fine dining spot tucked into a converted Craftsman home in Wallingford, running a hyperseasonal Pacific Northwestern menu that's formal enough to take seriously and loose enough to actually enjoy. A James Beard nominee, it draws the kind of crowd that knows exactly where Canlis is, which is where the chef came from.

Delilah is a supper club inside the Wynn that leans hard into old Vegas glamour, the kind of room that makes you feel underdressed even when you're not. The beverage program earned a James Beard nomination. Dress up; this is not a jeans situation.

  45. A converted firehouse turned wine bar with a retail shop stocking over 200 bottles you can also drink on the spot. The menu rotates around whatever the chef's neighbor harvests from the garden across the street, which keeps things genuinely seasonal in a way most places only claim. The backyard runs to lawn chairs and picnic blankets, with DJs on weekends. It landed on the New York Times Restaurant List and Bon Appétit's Best New Restaurants in the same year.

  54. Floor-to-ceiling windows look straight across the East River at the Lower Manhattan skyline, a view few New York hotels can match. This eco-minded luxury hotel sits at the edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where salvaged materials and low-impact design feel less like a brand statement and more like a natural fit for a waterfront that was industrial wasteland not so long ago. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Key.

  55. Rank 1575. Copra

    South Indian

The name refers to dried coconut meat, which tells you roughly where the kitchen's head is at. Srijith Gopinathan's South Indian restaurant fills a lush, two-story corner room in the Fillmore that photographs well and eats even better. The sharing menu runs from a palette of housemade chutneys with pappadom to shell-on crab curry, the kind of sticky, tamarind-dark sauce that renders your outfit a casualty. A James Beard semifinalist and ranked fourth on the Chronicle's Bay Area top 100.

  56. Fifteen minutes north of South Beach, which is just far enough to feel like a different city, this oceanfront luxury resort sits two rooms per floor along the Atlantic, so the building never feels like a scrum. The two-story lobby leans into the drama with jatoba columns, leather walls, and an Ed Moses canvas you can't miss. A Forbes Four Star property, closed for renovations through late 2026, so time your visit accordingly.

  57. The signature juice, Ji, sits bottled in the retail section alongside coffee beans and condiments from a sister market, which tells you this is a place with a community idea behind it. Baobab Fare is a Burundian restaurant on Woodward, one of very few in the country, serving slow-roasted goat, pan-fried chicken in mustard-onion sauce, and a coconut-mango dessert that has no business being this good. 58. Rank 1579. Gemma

    Contemporary American Bistro

A warm raisin scone arrives before you've even looked at the menu, which tells you everything about the priorities at this intimate neighborhood bistro tucked into Henderson Avenue. The contemporary American cooking leans seasonal and unfussy, and the hospitality earned a James Beard nomination to prove it's not an accident. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room fills with the kind of regulars who stopped reading the menu months ago.

  59. Rank 1580. Eylan

    Indian

A whole sea bream arrives at this contemporary Indian restaurant still wearing the grid lines from the wood-fired grill, which tells you most of what you need to know about the kitchen's approach. Srijith Gopinathan, the chef behind Palo Alto's Ettan, blends regional Indian cooking with California ingredients, and the Bib Gourmand and a James Beard nomination for Outstanding Restaurateur followed. It sits inside a Menlo Park development where you can buy a Swiss watch on the way in.

  60. Every room has a balcony facing the Atlantic, which is a strong opening move for a Forbes Four Star hotel on Fort Lauderdale Beach. The Ritz-Carlton here runs the full playbook: Frette linens, a sprawling spa, and an on-site seafood restaurant with a wine room staffed by a sommelier who actually wants to talk. The crowd skews toward people who packed nicer luggage than you did, but the ocean view is the same for everyone.

    The awards

  61. Four golf courses on 800 acres tell you what this resort prioritizes, and everything else, the rooms, the spa, the pool complex, the dining, gets scaled to match. Trump National Doral Miami sits about eight miles from the airport and twenty minutes from the beach, close enough to Miami without actually being in it. A Forbes Four Star resort that runs large in every direction, it draws golfers, families, and business travelers who want serious amenities without a South Beach scene.

    The awards

  62. The hotel has its own resident dog, Georgie, available for guest cuddles, which tells you something about how seriously the Fairmont takes its wellbeing pitch. This Georgetown hotel is a comfortable, upscale base for the city, with spacious rooms and a three-floor wellness center running a 50-foot saltwater pool, sauna, steam room, and spin classes. A renovated lobby and courtyard bar draw the power-lunch crowd even when they're not staying over.

  63. A 52-floor tower built from the ground up in Streeterville, a few blocks east of the Mag Mile and a short walk to Navy Pier. The hotel leans into Chicago's architectural legacy with design choices that feel considered rather than corporate, and a 75-foot lap pool and rooftop lounge raise the stakes for an urban stay. Business travelers and weekenders both find their footing here without too much awkward overlap.

  64. The atrium lobby sits inside what was once Portland's grandest department store, glazed terra cotta still gleaming nine floors up. The Nines is a luxury hotel that leans into that past without turning itself into a museum, placing commissioned work from local artists alongside the occasional artfully staged mannequin. In a city where a flannel shirt passes for formal wear, the place offers a quiet, unapologetic dose of glamour.

  65. The hotel sits inside Water Tower Place, which means stepping off the elevator lands you in a shopping mall with over 125 stores, and stepping outside puts Chanel, Cartier, and the Art Institute within a few blocks. It's a luxury hotel on the Magnificent Mile, so the Gold Coast energy is built in. Rooms run at Ritz-Carlton prices, and the location does a lot of the justifying for them.

  66. Mid-century lines, leather and velvet, and eclectic artwork set the tone in the lobby of this boutique hotel tucked into the Gold Coast, where historic mansions and designer boutiques crowd the sidewalk outside. The 247 rooms lean luxe without tipping into stiff, the vibe is hip without the velvet-rope attitude, and a complimentary Lexus house car is the kind of quiet flex that earns its keep. Nico Osteria draws locals in off the street.

  67. Perched on a 150-foot bluff above the Pacific, this Forbes Four Star resort has been the Southern California coastal fantasy since forever, and a recent head-to-toe renovation leaned hard into the setting. Rooms run sage, sky blue, and petal pink; the spa goes jewel-toned and misty. The lobby on a weekend holds a cheerful cross-section of the country, united by saltwater taffy at check-in and strong opinions about which pool to claim.

  68. Rank 1589. Bar Goto

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

The Sakura Martini, a sake-and-gin affair finished with a salted cherry blossom, is the thing people come back for at this tiny, warmly lit cocktail bar on Eldridge Street. Kenta Goto spent years at Pegu Club before opening this place, and the short menu of original drinks leans on Japanese ingredients, house infusions, and a quieter kind of precision. Small enough that nobody is a stranger for long.

  71. A large spinning rotisserie dominates the open kitchen at this Capitol Hill New American restaurant, and the menu more or less organizes itself around it. The duck is the obvious move, but seasonal Mid-Atlantic produce does serious supporting work throughout. The room is spare, which keeps the focus where the kitchen wants it. The New York Times put it on their D.C. shortlist, and a 2024 James Beard nomination for Outstanding Restaurateur followed.

  72. The line forms before the doors open, which tells you something about a strip-mall pizzeria in suburban Maryland. Tony Conte left fine dining to make neo-Neapolitan pies here, and the blistered crusts show it. A James Beard nominee and a spot on 50 Top Pizza USA, the place punches well past its zip code. The roasted potato and onion pizza, fragrant with rosemary, was named one of the DC area's favorite dishes of 2025.

  73. Rank 1595. The Sazerac Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The Sazerac Bar holds the rights to both the Sazerac cocktail and the Ramos Gin Fizz, which says something about the confidence of the Roosevelt Hotel's lobby bar. Dark wood paneling, murals, and a long bar that has been drawing New Orleans in formal and informal attire for generations. It's sophisticated without being stiff, which is a harder trick than it sounds in a city that takes its drinks this seriously.

  74. Rank 1596. Emmett

    Levantine

Emmett is a Kensington restaurant that treats the Levant as a starting point and then wanders off through France, Italy, and the American South without a map. The cocktail list includes a lamb fat washed rye, so the bar is also in on it. Dinner here is a sit-down affair, polished and on the pricier side, and the James Beard folks nominated it for Best New Restaurant. The main problem is ordering a reasonable amount.

  76. Rank 1598. Kado no Mise

    Edo-style Sushi

Twelve counter seats and a reservation on Tock are your entry points to this North Loop omakase spot, where the chef plates Edo-style sushi and seasonal small dishes in a room stripped down to near-silence. The minimalist space is deliberate, meant to keep your focus exactly where he wants it. The chef was a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Midwest in 2026, which tracks with the precision on the plate.

  77. Rank 1599. Nodoguro

    Japanese

Each dinner follows a literal script, with courses named Acts I through V and a menu built around a short story or novel that changes every six weeks. Nodoguro is an intimate Japanese omakase tucked into a downtown building, where the chef composes each plate in front of you at the bar. Ryan Roadhouse sources his rice from Hokkaido, and the whole thing moves with the quiet precision of someone who has thought very hard about the order of things.

  78. Rank 1600. Kaya

    Modern Filipino

A small bungalow in Orlando's Mills 50 district, Kaya runs a modern Filipino tasting menu that moves through multiple courses with a rotating cast of local seafood and central Florida produce. The kitchen riffs on classic Filipino flavors rather than replicate them, and the open kitchen keeps things convivial for a neighborhood spot. A James Beard nominee, it draws the kind of crowd that actually reads the menu before they sit down.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
