The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. Rank 9101. House

    Japanese

  2. Rank 9102. Pizzeria Virtu

    Wood-fired Pizzeria

A wood-fired pizza spot set inside an actual house, backyard patio and all, in a neighborhood that otherwise runs on bottle service and valet queues. Chef Gio Osso, known for finer dining elsewhere in the Valley, keeps things loose here: simple salads, pies with charred, bubbled crusts, and toppings that lean toward chestnut honey and rapini pesto rather than the standard playbook. Bring a bottle and a friend who won't mind lingering.

  3. White tiles, pastel trim, and a cartoon burger grinning at you from the wall set the tone at this retro counter-service burger joint on downtown Mesa's main drag. The team behind Tacos Chiwas and Espiritu kept things deliberately simple: a short menu of semi-smashed burgers, hot dogs, loaded fries, and aguas frescas. The Sonora burger, stacked with griddled cheese, chiltepin, and bacon, is the one people talk about.

  4. The hotel cuts its lights at ten o'clock so guests can watch the Northern Lights from the dark, which tells you more about this place than any amenity list could. Aurora Villa is a Nordic-minimalist lodge half an hour outside Fairbanks, incongruously sleek among the usual rustic cabins, sitting at roughly the same latitude as Iceland. The surrounding area is quiet enough that when the lights go out, they really go out.

  5. A boutique hotel two blocks from Penn State's campus, Graduate State College takes an old downtown property and rebuilds it as a love letter to the Nittany Lions, with blue-and-white livery and Penn State references tucked into every corner. The Graduate group does this at campuses across the country, selling a collegiate life more charming than the one most students actually lived. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

    The awards

  6. Private balconies hang over Walloon Lake at this boutique lakeside hotel in northern Michigan, where Hemingway summered as a kid and the water hasn't gotten any less beautiful since. Rooms come with plush robes and bedding you can tailor to your preferences, and the on-site Barrel Back restaurant handles waterfront meals with house-smoked everything. It's the kind of place that earns its postcard setting without leaning too hard on the nostalgia.

    The awards

  7. The awards

  8. A gear demo and rental center doubles as the lobby vibe at this outdoor-adventure hotel near the base of Mt. Shasta, where the Michelin Guide has taken notice. Rooms run from standard doubles to a "whole crew" option, the look is hip without fussing over itself, and nobody raises an eyebrow at muddy boots. Fire pits, a game room, and weekend movie nights handle the evenings after a day on the slopes or trails.

    The awards

  9. A vintage-inspired inn just off the Tunnel of Trees route near Harbor Springs, Otis sits close enough to town to feel connected but far enough to feel like the point is slowing down. Frette linens and custom furnishings give the rooms a considered feel without trying too hard, and the courtyard runs from pool to bocce court in a way that makes the afternoon disappear. The Fireplace Lounge handles the evenings.

    The awards

  10. A speakeasy, a rooftop lounge, a steakhouse, a bar and grill, and a café, all inside one hotel in Bakersfield, which is either ambitious or a cry for help, and somehow it works. The Padre is a mid-century-swank boutique hotel that's been around forever but reinvented recently, and standard rooms already come with California king beds and down duvets before the suites get genuinely excessive. The Michelin Guide has it on their Selected Hotels list.

    The awards

  11. The official list of activities at this Rogue River lodge includes "Do Nothing" at the top, which tells you everything about the vibe. It's a rustic riverside retreat, a few miles from Siskiyou National Forest, with rooms built around cedar beams and river rock fireplaces. Larger houses add hot tubs and wraparound decks. Dinner comes out family-style; kayaks go upriver whenever you're ready.

    The awards

  12. Glamping, done with a straight face: safari-style tents with real beds and en-suite bathrooms, set in the redrock quiet between Lake Powell's marina and the vast, barely-charted Grand Staircase-Escalante. Under Canvas has built the same formula near national parks across the country, and it works because the surrounding landscape does most of the heavy lifting. A Michelin Selected Hotel, for anyone keeping score.

  14. Rank 9114. Pena's Bakery

    Mexican Deli

The telera rolls are baked fresh every morning at this Fruitvale panaderia and deli, which means the tortas built on them have a structural advantage before anything else is added. The chorizo con papas filling gets made a day ahead so the potato and spiced sausage can concentrate, then it's layered with avocado and a chile de arbol salsa that earns its reputation. Two indoor tables, a loyal crowd of regulars, and a sandwich that sells out early.

  15. The curved brick entryway opens into an oblong room of deep green walls, gold candelabras, and picture frames, which is a lot to pull off inside a Tempe strip mall. Bar Capri is an Italian restaurant and bar with the bones of a big-city neighborhood spot: cocktails and a tight wine list from a back bar, lasagna and arancini coming through the kitchen window. Tiramisu closes things out, and nobody seems in a hurry to leave.

  16. Rank 9116. Barbusa

    Southern Italian

Barbusa is a family-run Southern Italian trattoria in Little Italy, where Sophia Loren and Pavarotti glare down from pop-art portraits like they're checking your reservation. You can drink Aperol-and-ginger-beer Sicilian Mules at the marble bar or settle into the dining room for handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, and crudo. It carries AAA Three Diamonds, so wear something nicer than the shirt you wore to the farmers market.

  17. Rank 9116. GIADA

    Californian Italian

Giada De Laurentiis's Strip restaurant is a sit-down Italian spot with California sunshine in its bones, the sort of place where the menu prints pronunciation guides so nobody has to fake-confidence their way through the bucatini. Servers pour Prosecco with Food Network energy, the lemon spaghetti arrives in a tidy tower, and it holds a AAA Three Diamond rating. Dinner here, then Lil Wayne upstairs.

  18. Moonraker is a rooftop cocktail bar on the 14th floor of the Pendry Hotel, built around a circular bronze bar under glowing pendant lights. The windows are floor-to-ceiling and the Potomac does the rest, with boats and planes drifting past like extras. Japanese whiskeys, sushi rolls, and small plates keep the hands busy, and the patio fire pits suit a date or a solo drink. Dress like you meant to be here.

  19. Rank 9116. Ray's Cafe

    Seafood

Ray's Cafe is the casual upstairs sibling of Ray's Boathouse, a seafood spot on Shilshole Bay where the view does a good share of the work. Expect grilled salmon, fish and chips, and the kind of plate that would also be at home at a gala, only with a lower dress code and a lower bill. It's the move for a sunset dessert, and it carries three AAA diamonds.

  20. Rank 9116. Tanta

    Peruvian Seafood

Tanta is a big, lively Peruvian restaurant in River North, where the menu treats Peru's Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and Spanish influences like a family reunion that went well. That means pork fried rice crowned with a shrimp omelet, and nigiri topped with wagyu and a quail egg, so sushi and steak finally stop pretending they don't know each other. Happy hour pulls in regulars with $10 drinks and similarly gentle food prices.

  22. Rank 9125. Mainlander

    Taiwanese

Mainlander is a Taiwanese tasting-menu spot dressed like a midcentury tiki den, all orange-tinted light, Polynesian-style art, and vintage furniture that clearly cost someone a lot of weekends. The menu changes monthly and borrows freely from German, Sichuan, and Missouri pantries. Esquire put it on its best new restaurants list, and reservations open on the first of the month at noon, so set an alarm.

  23. This is a casual birrieria on North Broadway, and the menu is basically one idea: slow-cooked goat, served with handmade tortillas and the usual fixings. The Uptown spot took over after a fire shut the family's original Archer Heights location, and the recipe came along intact. It's lunch food that closes early, so plan around the goat, not the other way around. The Bear crew ate here while filming, which is its own kind of review.

  24. This is a cafeteria-line Jewish deli where you grab a tray, slide it past the steam tables, and let a man pile corned beef onto rye until it stops resembling lunch and starts resembling a load-bearing wall. The walls are papered in old newspaper clippings and notes from Chicago big shots, a nod to when deals got brokered between bites. Prices are easy, the dress code is whatever you wore to work.

  25. A food hall in RiNo that runs from morning espresso to late-night cocktails without ever really slowing down. Coffee and pastries open the day, a wood-fired pizza counter takes over by dinner, and the central bar keeps things moving in between. The kind of place where it's genuinely difficult to leave, mostly because you keep deciding one more stop counts as research.

  26. The name comes from David Bowie's "Space Oddity," and the kitchen leans into the theme without going full theme-restaurant about it. This New American bar and restaurant on Larimer keeps things approachable, with a concise menu that rotates through tight, careful cooking. It shares a block with the tasting-menu sibling next door, so the crowd tends to know what they're doing, which keeps the energy easy without feeling sleepy.

  27. The Coco Puffs in the bakery case are cream puffs frosted on top, not cereal, and locals have been devoted to them for generations. This outpost of a Honolulu institution sits in a bright, open-air space at the top of International Market Place, which feels a little glossy for a diner that trades in pancakes, Denver omelets, and mochi donuts. The food is the same as the original, which is exactly the point.

  30. Rank 9133. Maeva

    Fine dining French

Dark walls, checkerboard tile, and a four-course French tasting menu in a Gilbert strip suite, which is not a sentence anyone expected to write. Maeva runs all day, so you can stop in for a lavender latte in the morning and then come back dressed up for dinner. The kitchen does a la carte too, but the tasting menu is the main event, with servers who steer the pairings and explain each plate without making you feel like you're being graded.

  31. A palm-sized guava tart with finger limes that pop against smooth guava cream put this bakery on the New York Times list of the year's best desserts across the country. Sol Bakery is a neighborhood bakery on Hayes Street where the pastry work tilts toward barely sweet, bright, and texturally alive. The guava tart alone has earned a following before the permanent doors were barely open.

  32. Rank 9135. Cadinho

    Portuguese Bakery

Cadinho is a sunny Portuguese bakery and cafe in McKinley Park, and the tarts are the whole conversation. There's the pastel de nata, vanilla-scented custard in flaky pastry, sometimes wearing a little chocolate shell like a tiny hat. There are also palm-sized passionfruit pies with a crust that gives up immediately. The other baked goods are perfectly pleasant, but you'll see people leave carrying a box of tarts and nothing else.

  33. Good Ambler is a Fulton Market bakery tucked into the lobby of a snack-food conglomerate's headquarters, and the pastry case has the good manners not to mention it. Macarons, kouign-amann, petit gateau and handmade chocolates line up behind the glass, but the plain croissant is the one doing the heavy lifting. It's a counter-service stop, so nobody needs a reservation or a dress code.

  34. Blue corn tortillas packed with saucy, warm-spiced beef birria is the move at this Mission District taqueria, which calls its style Chicano rather than the more tomato-forward versions you'll find elsewhere. The asada and adobo chicken are there for the uncommitted, both lifted considerably by the creamy salsa verde. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best tacos in the Bay Area, which the line out front suggests locals have known for a while.

  36. Tastykake wrappers, scrapple company pennants, and Philly sports ephemera cover every wall at this Fishtown diner, where the decorating philosophy appears to be "yes, and." Omelets come loaded with local kielbasa sourced from an old-school Port Richmond butcher, hash browns arrive properly shattered on the outside, and the scrapple takes a left turn with spicy whitefish and pickled peppers. Daytime only, cheerful, and very much a neighborhood fixture.

  38. Metal skewers pulled from an open flame and left to rest on the grill's upper rack, that's the move at this Indian barbecue spot in Fremont. The menu is deliberately short: paneer, chicken, and mutton skewers, plus rice and biryani. The grilled chicken comes drenched in a creamy, smoke-kissed white sauce that doubles as a biryani condiment if you're paying attention. The San Francisco Chronicle put it on their Top 100 list.

  39. String lights stretch across a patio hung with art made from repurposed tools, which sets the tone for Spread Kitchen, a Lebanese-inspired restaurant on the Sonoma Highway where lemons show up in nearly everything. 40. Rank 9148. Cart-Driver

    Pizzeria

  41. The entrance is a walk-in freezer at the back of a Downtown ice cream shop, which is the kind of plot twist a Las Vegas cocktail bar can get away with. On the other side is an Old Hollywood-style hideaway serving movie-themed drinks, some arriving in milk pint glasses. You can also roll a pair of dice and let the bartenders improvise around your fate. Dress for a drink, not a sundae.

  44. Rank 9148. Sonoratown

    Sonoran Taqueria

Flour tortillas, not corn, are the whole argument here. This Sonoran taqueria brings the traditions of San Luis Río Colorado to Los Angeles, where the lard-rich, hand-made tortillas get charred on a griddle and wrapped around mesquite-grilled asada or slow-cooked cabeza. The caramelo and the oversized burritos draw regulars who already know their order before they reach the counter. A casual, counter-service spot where eating light is genuinely hard.

  45. Rank 9148. Stray Pirate

    Dog-Inspired Tiki Bar

The walls of this pirate-themed tiki bar are hung with portraits of distinguished canine buccaneers, which alone tells you something about the commitment level here. The lore involves a cursed ship, a sea witch, and a crew turned into dogs, and it's fully committed to the bit without letting the theatrics crowd out the drinks. Traditional tiki pours sit alongside inventive originals, and the cocktail menu earns its keep on its own terms.

  46. Rank 9154. Leña

    Catalan

Every log in the hearth is Michigan oak, cherry, or applewood, and the smoke threads through a Basque and Catalan menu that sprawls from pintxos to proper entrees. This is a sit-down dinner spot in Brush Park where sharing is assumed and the wine list leans Spanish throughout. A specialty gin and tonic section and a sherry-forward low-alcohol program round out what is, by any measure, a well-considered room to spend money in on a Friday night.

  47. Rank 9154. Minhwa Spirits

    Korean Cocktail Bar

A soju distillery in Doraville that also makes its own makgeolli, a Korean rice wine brewed in-house, Minhwa Spirits is a cocktail bar where the spirits on the menu began a few feet away. Food pop-ups and a coffee counter share the space. The bar program draws on serious talent, and the cocktails lean toward floral and aromatic rather than punishing. Small, unpretentious, and a long way from Midtown's usual scene.

  48. Rank 9154. Puma Detroit

    Latin American

All-black walls with iridescent orange accents set the mood at this Latin American cocktail bar and small-plates spot on the northwest side. Argentine and Chilean wines arrive in penguin-shaped ceramic pitchers, and the cocktail list leans on pisco and yerba mate. DJs spin from a booth in the center of the room, a fire pit runs along one wall, and the whole thing gets progressively better after midnight. Book ahead if you want a seat at the bar.

  49. G-Love is a Northwest 21st Avenue restaurant that Portland Monthly calls the city's most Californian, which is a dry way of saying the vibe arrived from San Francisco and unpacked. The signature is a half avocado crusted in seeds to look like its own skin, stuffed with tuna poke, caviar optional. It's a sit-down dinner with a little coastal swagger, and it landed on the magazine's iconic dishes list and its 50 best.

  50. Rank 9157. Malegria Cafe

    Central American Mexican Coffee Shop

A shaded patio tucked behind a corner cafe on Grand Avenue is a good argument for slowing down on a weekday morning. Malegria is an all-day Latin cafe drawing on Mexican, Guatemalan, and Salvadoran cooking, so the coffee comes sweetened with piloncillo or horchata, and the breakfast sandwich arrives on bolillo bread with fried plantains and crema verde. The crowd tends to linger, which the patio quietly encourages.

  53. Rank 9161. Akar

    Modern Malaysian

Akar is a Malaysian fine dining room in Clayton with concrete walls, sparse decor, and the lighting of a place that expects you to lean in. There's no menu online and reservations happen by phone, which in this economy counts as an aggressive commitment to mystery. The curries run rich and layered, the roti arrives in flaky sheets, and the plates cost real money, so dress like you made the call on purpose.

You can sit down for natural Austrian bubbles and a mountain of romaine salad and call it dinner, though ordering a pizza seems to be the point. It works for a date or a family table, and the chef was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific.

  56. Echo is a listening lounge in the Arts District where the vintage McIntosh sound system is treated like the guest of honor and the room is arranged around it, living-room style. 58. Rank 9161. Lorenzo California

    Italian Sandwich Shop

Focaccia sandwiches stacked with Italian cold cuts are the entire point here, and Lorenzo California commits to that premise with no apologies. The tiny cafe on Santa Monica Boulevard does Florentine-style sandwiches from a small counter, with a few seats inside and a handful of tables outside for watching Beverly Hills do its thing. The Los Angeles Times put it on their 101 best restaurants list, which is a lot of recognition for a sandwich shop, and yet.

  59. Rank 9161. Mai Lee

    Vietnamese

Mai Lee is a family-run Vietnamese restaurant in a Brentwood strip, and it has been around forever. The menu runs past 300 numbered, made-to-order dishes, so ordering feels like a long-form exam you can't fail. Regulars will point you to the St. Paul sandwich, a St. Louis oddity involving egg foo young and white bread. Casual, unfussy, and priced so you can try several numbers.

  60. Mestiza is a counter-service taqueria with orange booths and blue walls, and the angular windows make lunch feel like a slightly cheerful boat trip. It grew out of the taco nights at sister restaurant Malinche. You order at the register, get a free potato taco, and then spend a while negotiating with the tray of salsas. Spit-roasted pork and a cheesy alambre are on the menu, and so is a cactus option for vegetarians.

  61. Rank 9161. Noto

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Noto is a Neapolitan pizzeria built around a glowing white oven parked dead center in the dining room, which everyone treats with the reverence usually reserved for a small chapel. It started as a food truck and grew into a certified restaurant in St. Peters, where the crust comes out leopard-spotted and the pasta list gets a fair hearing. Families and pizza devotees share the room, and the burrata upgrade tends to go unquestioned.

  62. The Stellar Hog is a small South City barbecue joint with a hand-painted celestial ceiling, which gives you something to look at between ribs. It feels like a neighborhood bar where the Budweiser flows freely, then got a psychedelic makeover and let the kids in. The chipotle-honey ribs and brisket come out glossy and well barked. Sunday on the patio is beef rib territory, so clear your afternoon.

  63. Rank 9161. The Stove

    Seafood

  64. Almost everything lands on a banana leaf, and most people eat with their hands. This Chettinad Indian restaurant in Mountain View specializes in the cooking of Tamil Nadu, which means bold spice, rice noodle cakes soaking up mutton curry, and chicken 65 in a shade of red that means business. The kitchen opens for breakfast daily and runs unlimited thalis on weekends, when the room fills fast with people who already know exactly what they're ordering.

    Indian

The enchiladas are why people come back to this California Indian restaurant in Sausalito, draped in cheese, yogurt, tamarind, and a curried house sauce that shouldn't work as well as it does. The owner is a regular presence at the tables, cheerfully fielding questions about why the menu also includes Jamaican jerk chicken. There is exactly one dessert. You order it.

  67. Carnitas sold by the pound at a front counter is the whole premise, and it has been in Pilsen long enough to feel like civic infrastructure. This is a no-frills carnitas shop where you pick your cuts, grab tortillas and salsa from the fixings spread, and assemble your own tacos at a table, if you can claim one on a weekend. The cactus salad is a quieter argument for going than the carnitas, but the carnitas is the reason anyone's in line.

  68. Rank 9174. El Paisa by Los Alegres

    Mexico City Taqueria

The al pastor trompo does its lazy spin in the window, which tells you everything about what kind of place this is: a Mexico City-style taqueria on Middlefield serving snack-size tacos on double yellow corn tortillas. The lengua comes sliced into broad slabs rather than cubed, and the tacos arrive lightly salted by design, with a packet on the side. The communal table works, but hood-of-your-car also works.

  69. The smoker out back is a salvaged propane tank, and the brisket it produces comes out in thick, wide folds that smell of mesquite and barely hold their shape. Eric's is a cafeteria-style BBQ joint in Avondale where the wood-only smoke method is a point of pride, and the smoked turkey and dry-rubbed ribs carry it through. Sides like cheese-dusted elote keep the backyard cookout spirit intact. Phoenix New Times named it among the top 50 restaurants in the metro.

  70. The dining rooms are draped in lush plants and Mexican folk art, and for a moment you forget you're in a neighborhood off North Loop. This fine dining institution has been around forever, making the case for regional Mexican cooking long before it was fashionable, with dishes rooted in Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, and the Yucatan. Dress accordingly, order the cochinita pibil, and let the room do what it does.

    Cantonese

Salt-and-pepper fried chicken wings and wok-fried noodles are the draws at this casual Cantonese spot on the west side of Houston. It has been a neighborhood staple long enough that regulars tend to know what they're getting before they sit down. Save room for the Hong Kong milk tea and the deep-fried French toast, which arrives drowning in butter and condensed milk, which is exactly the kind of ending a meal like this deserves.

    Sushi

Ichifuji is a ten-seat sushi bar in a Linda Vista strip mall, where two veteran itamae work a seasonal omakase that comes in a nigiri-heavy version if you'd rather skip the cooked courses. The bar is sleek and quiet, so plan on whispering reverently over your tuna. The heated patio is dog-friendly and more relaxed, which is handy if your dining companion has opinions about fish and four legs.

  73. Durian tiramisu is either the bravest or most reckless dessert call in Fremont, and Kin Len commits to it without apology. This dim, chic Thai restaurant and bar reads like a stylish neighborhood spot until the food arrives and reframes the whole thing. The menu swings wide, from spicy octopus carpaccio to banana blossom fries, and the cocktails keep pace. They do serve pad Thai, but it comes draped in oversize river prawns, just so you know where you stand.

  74. The tlayudas here come folded rather than open-faced, crisped over a charcoal grill in a way that most Oaxacan food trucks in the Bay Area simply don't bother with. La Jacaranda is an outdoor food truck parked inside a sprawling open-air market on Alum Rock, with canopied communal seating and a menu rooted in Oaxacan tradition. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best restaurants in San Jose, which is a lot of credit for a truck with a charcoal grill.

  76. A small pasta counter tucked above the Pike Place Market Atrium, where the menu changes every couple of weeks based on whatever the market has going. The lasagna stays, the tomato sauce pasta stays, and everything else rotates through combinations like pappardelle with venison ragù or gemelli with caramelized pears and gorgonzola. The chef grew up in Turin, and it shows in the kind of quiet confidence that pairs orecchiette with Penn Cove mussels without making a fuss about it.

  77. Rank 9174. Redhot Ranch

    Chicago-Style American

The Depression dog, a Chicago hot dog variant that arrives with fries piled right on top of the bun, is a good reason to find this counter-service hot dog stand on Armitage. Redhot Ranch uses natural-casing sausages, which means an actual snap when you bite in. The smash burgers are a serious value. The same owners run 35th Street Red Hots near Sox Park, same menu, if that's closer.

  78. Rectangular pizzas sold by the meal-size slice anchor the menu at this busy Cal-Italian bakery and kitchen on Highway One in Tomales, a natural pit stop for anyone driving or cycling the coast. The menu is tight, meatballs and salads alongside the pizza, but the bread is its own reason to pull over. The olive loaf, dense with Kalamata and green olives, travels well. The San Francisco Chronicle named it one of the Bay Area's best sandwich spots.

  79. Shelves of cookbooks by Sanjeev Kapoor line the walls, which tells you exactly whose restaurant this is. The celebrity chef's global chain lands in Santa Clara as a fine dining Indian restaurant covering both Northern and Southern regional ground, with the kitchen leaning into contemporary spins on each. The shaam savera, spinach dumplings stuffed with cheese and pooled in tomato gravy, is the signature worth ordering. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's best South Asian restaurants.

    Chinese Noodle Shop

Biang biang noodles get their name from the sound of dough being slapped against the counter, and at this cozy noodle shop on the Ave, that wide, chewy ribbon is the whole reason you're here. The chef has been setting the local standard for years, dressing them in cumin lamb, tingly beef, or just chile oil, which turns out to be enough. 82. A mother-and-son food cart in a Milwaukie food park, turning out Guyanese cooking that's rare in Portland and rarer nationally. The namesake bakes are fluffy, slightly sweet fried-dough pockets stuffed with anything from salt cod to Nutella, so lunch and dessert can share a single pastry. Curry and chow mein reflect Guyana's Indian and Chinese roots. It's cart-priced, with covered seating nearby, and Eater has put it on its list of the best in town.

  83. Rank 9194. Bun Bo Hue Restaurant

    Vietnamese Noodle Shop

This Lents noodle shop is named after its one big move, the spicy beef soup from central Vietnam, and it sees no reason to hedge. The broth runs meaty, shrimpy, and lemongrass-bright, with collagen-heavy cuts, pork blood cubes, and thick, slippery noodles. A plate of banana blossom, basil, mint, and lime arrives for you to dump in. Eater's list of Portland's best restaurants and food carts includes it. Dine in or call ahead.

The pisco sours here taste like someone in Lima is personally offended if they're made any other way. A tree grows through the middle of the second-floor patio, which tells you something about the vibe here. Kettner Exchange is a bi-level progressive American restaurant in Little Italy where Asian techniques quietly run the kitchen, and the rooftop draws a crowd that came to be seen but stays for the food. Downstairs buzzes; upstairs breathes. The menu moves between crispy rice and dumplings with enough conviction that you forget this place doubles as a nightlife destination.

    Mediterranean

This is a big, bright, counter-and-table Mediterranean cafe in Brickell where breakfast and lunch have stopped pretending to be separate meals. Jerusalem bagel plates, harissa chips, and a rice bowl share a menu with malawach churros, and limonana, the mint lemonade, goes with all of it. It's casual enough for shorts, and it's busy in the way that suggests half of Brickell has already decided what they're ordering.

  87. Servers in ties and vests refill your water after every sip, and warm focaccia arrives before you've fully settled in. Mucca Osteria is a downtown Italian restaurant operating on the old assumption that hospitality is the whole point, and the kitchen keeps pace: handmade pastas with a silky bite, burrata draped in long-aged prosciutto, scallops over Parmesan fonduta. A room that makes you slow down without making a fuss about it.

  88. Plant-based pan-Asian on Belmont, where the menu reads like a dare and the cocktails keep pace. Norah is a lively, colorful restaurant where pad Thai nachos and vegan rangoons share space with a whole roasted cauliflower drowned in red curry. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
