  1. The room seats maybe thirty people and fills up fast, tucked between the West End and Parkside in a spot that looks like a classic neighborhood tavern and then proceeds to serve broiled scallop with caviar and hollandaise. Small plates anchor the menu, the wine list has a point of view, and the cocktails are sharper than the setting lets on. Condé Nast Traveler put it on their Portland list, which surprises no one who's been.

  2. Rank 402. Rollin Smoke Barbeque

    Southern Barbecue

Rollin Smoke is a casual barbecue counter where hickory-smoked meats share the plate with hush puppies, fried okra, and dirty rice. The outlaw burger comes stacked so high with brisket, onion strings, and slaw that eating it politely is a rumor, and a sauce bar lets you add a Carolina vinegar squirt anyway. Picnic tables and a mural of a pastoral landscape do the decorating, which seems about right.

  3. Rank 403. 9th Street Bistro

    Contemporary American Bistro

The menu changes every week, which is either liberating or a scheduling problem depending on how you feel about commitment. This 35-seat Noblesville bistro is the project of a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef who makes his own cured meats, cheeses, and desserts and reworks American classics with international ingredients. A James Beard Award semifinalist in 2023, he's built a genuine neighborhood following in a room small enough that the regulars all seem to know each other.

  4. Rank 404. Smōk

    Barbecue

The smoke here is the point, not the backdrop. This fast-casual BBQ counter inside the Source Hotel takes an Austin-leaning approach to brisket and jalapeño cheddar sausage, where the smoke reads as seasoning rather than spectacle. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich has its loyalists too. Sides like slaw and mac and cheese are present and accounted for, though nobody's lining up for them. The Michelin Guide has it on their list, if that helps calibrate expectations.

  5. Rank 405. būccan

    Contemporary American

A short rib empanada with aji amarillo sauce has been the anchor of this Palm Beach restaurant's menu long enough that regulars would riot if it disappeared. Chef Clay Conley runs a contemporary American kitchen where crudos, pastas, and small plates rotate with the seasons, though a handful of signatures stay put. Half-orders of pasta let you try more than one, which is the kind of quiet generosity that keeps locals coming back.

  7. Rank 408. Bramble & Hare

    Rustic American

Fur throws drape the chairs, wood panels the walls, and the prosciutto aging in-house comes from pigs the chef actually raises. Bramble & Hare is a prix-fixe dinner spot where the menu starts at the farm, literally, because the team runs one. The cooking is unfussy by design, letting the ingredients carry the argument. It reads farmhouse lodge, feels like a dinner party, and draws the kind of crowd that never rushes dessert.

  8. Rank 408. Cheeky's

    American

The bacon flight, five strips in rotating flavors, is reason enough to brave the wait at this daytime-only brunch spot in Palm Springs. Text-ahead seating lands you on a covered patio full of sunglasses and no particular hurry. The weekly-changing menu leans on local produce and runs from breakfast quesadillas to proper coffee cake, with housemade pastries at the counter for anyone too impatient to sit down.

  9. Rank 408. Ethel's Fancy

    Californian

The name honors Scott Nishiyama's mother and grandmother, which tells you something about the register of the place before you've even sat down. This Palo Alto shared-plate restaurant lands somewhere between rustic and polished, with a short California-driven menu that moves from fried swordfish to hojicha tapioca pudding without breaking a sweat. The kind of room where the cooking is clearly serious but nobody's performing seriousness at you.

  10. Rank 408. J.G. Melon

    American

The green-and-white checked tablecloths have been here so long they're practically load-bearing. JG Melon is an old-school Upper East Side burger joint where the dark wood bar stays busy, the staff is genuinely cheerful, and the cheeseburger is the reason The Infatuation named it one of New York's defining dishes. Come early or expect a wait, which at this point is just part of the ritual.

  11. Rank 408. Prelude

    Southern Cocktail Bar

Fried chicken wings stuffed with andouille dirty rice tell you everything about this Southern-leaning cocktail bar and dining room in the Jay Hotel. The chef's Alabama roots show up in pimento cheese dressed with trout roe and banana cream pie reimagined as a chocolate-pretzel tartlet, dishes that straddle Sunday supper and something more deliberate. The room is dusky and quietly glamorous, the kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like a reason to dress up.

  12. Rank 408. Soby's

    Southern

Pimiento fondue over fried green tomatoes is the kind of dish that makes you wonder why the rest of the country isn't doing this. Soby's is a downtown Greenville institution, a full-service Southern restaurant where the dining room buzzes on a Tuesday and the bar fills up fast enough that a reservation is a good idea. The wine list runs deeper than the room suggests, and the kitchen keeps its Southern cooking earnest and unfussy.

  13. Rank 414. Micklethwait Craft Meats

    Central Texas Barbecue

The brisket comes sliced on butcher paper at this East Austin BBQ shop, where the pit crew turns out central Texas smoke across ribs, sausage, pulled pork, and lamb. The sides pull their own weight, especially a potato salad dressed with cider vinegar that has no business being this good. Save room for banana pudding, or don't, it's your afternoon. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the line outside tells you everything else.

  14. Rank 415. Noreetuh

    Hawaiian

Polaroids of regulars tile every wall of this dimly lit East Village neighborhood restaurant, which has been doing Hawaiian comfort food long enough to feel like part of the block's furniture. The mochiko fried chicken comes with macaroni salad and King's Hawaiian rolls, the musubi platter runs from spicy spam to salmon tartare, and the German riesling list goes deeper than anyone sees coming. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a genuinely easy room to spend a whole evening in.

  15. Rank 416. Howlin’ Ray’s

    Nashville-style Southern

Nashville-style hot chicken counter inside the Venetian's Via Via food hall, where the queue alone tells you something is happening. The LA original has a cult following, and the Vegas outpost brings the same obsessive consistency: fiery chicken sandwiches dressed with coleslaw, comeback sauce, and pickles, with heat levels running from no-heat "country" to "Howlin'," which the menu might as well label "your problem now." Grab the banana pudding as a chaser.

  16. The house-made charcuterie case does most of the persuading at this beloved butcher and deli from Donald Link. Mortadella, head cheese, and a muffuletta stacked with house meats and olive salad run alongside a smoky Cubano and something called Le Pig Mac. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and the bread is baked in-house. Order more than you think you need; the muffuletta alone could feed two.

  17. Cash only, order at the window, wait for your name. Dalessandro's has been doing cheesesteaks this way in northwest Philly for what feels like forever, and the system is not up for debate. The roll is soft, the chopped steak is tender, and the Cheez Whiz is not a compromise but the point. Add fried onions, say yes to the crushed hot peppers, and find a sidewalk table. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  18. Rank 418. Dauphine's

    Cajun & Creole

A sprawling Cajun and Creole restaurant spread across three levels, Dauphine's brings New Orleans cooking to downtown DC without any of the usual kitsch. The menu runs from oysters to blackened soft-shell crab to dark chocolate crémeux, and the cocktails are the kind that make you order a second before finishing the first. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks: big flavors, no ceremony.

  19. Rank 418. Del Rossi's

    American

In Northern Liberties, this casual American spot bakes its own sesame-seeded sourdough for the cheesesteaks, which feels like a small act of defiance in a city where the sandwich is a religion. Chopped steak, fried onions, and Cooper Sharp come on that crackly bread, and the kitchen also pulls thin Brooklyn-style grandma pies. The Michelin Guide hands out a Bib Gourmand here, which tracks given how much is happening at the simple tables in back.

  20. A compact sandwich counter inside Krog Street Market, Fred's holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it by committing fully to the mess. The menu moves from burgers to banh mi to cheesesteaks without any identity crisis, and the pimento cheese club, seared bread and all, makes a convincing case that restraint is overrated. Lines form fast and the room doesn't get bigger.

  21. Rank 418. Gilt Bar

    American

Studded leather banquettes and low, nostalgic lighting set the tone at this moody River North gastrobar, where the front bar runs cocktails at a steady clip and the kitchen leans into big plates and bolder flavors. Fried chicken with a proper crust, beef cheek pot pie with bone marrow gravy, a carrot cake you'll talk yourself into ordering despite having no room: the Michelin Bib Gourmand crowd knows what it's doing here.

  22. A hulking beef rib crusted with salt and pepper, served in a warehouse the size of a small airport, is your first clue that this isn't Miami's usual scene. Pitmaster Bill Durney's Brooklyn original comes to the Miami Produce Center, where forklifts idle outside and the smell of smoke drifts past a long bar and open kitchen. The Michelin Bib Gourmand BBQ shop does brisket that would hold its own in Texas, with yucca bowls on the side for local color.

  23. Rank 418. Longman & Eagle

    Contemporary American

The whiskey list at this Logan Square gastropub runs long enough to suggest the bar is the main event, and the dim wood-paneled room backs that theory up. Then the kitchen, tucked into a corner, starts sending out terrines and sweetbreads and omelets folded with brie that quietly reframe the whole situation. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of neighborhood place where people wander in at breakfast and somehow stay for dinner.

  24. Rank 418. Lucky 8

    Cajun & Creole

A Cajun-Creole restaurant in Sarasota's Southside Village that has no particular business being this good at gumbo. The room runs kitschy and colorful, the team is warm, and the menu drifts happily from chicken-and-andouille gumbo to crispy suckling pig dressed in nuoc cham, a nod to Louisiana's Vietnamese community that lands exactly right. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and lunch or dinner both work.

    The awards

  25. A po'boy shop that has been around forever, Parkway Bakery and Tavern earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand feeding the neighborhood from a sprawling, loud, indoor-outdoor room built for Saints games and serious eating. The menu is long but the point is clear: fried seafood, specialty, and meat po'boys on New Orleans French rolls. Regulars don't agonize over the list, they just order the Creole barbecue shrimp and get on with their afternoon.

    The awards

  26. A daytime café in a town that already leans hard into whimsy, Peasants Feast somehow fits right in without disappearing into the scenery. The sandwich menu follows the seasons closely, and what ends up between the bread leans creative rather than safe. The soup runs alongside it well. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the sister deli across the street handles picnic provisions for whoever has a winery next on the itinerary.

    The awards

  27. Rank 418. Sacred Ground Barbecue

    Texas-style Barbecue

A Texas-style barbecue spot on an empty stretch of highway past the train tracks in Pocahontas, where the meats come by the half pound and the brisket arrives with the kind of charred bark that makes a strong argument for skipping the burger menu. The pork butt takes on a Carolina mustard sauce without complaint. Sides carry their weight. A big patio makes it easy for families. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  28. Whole hog over burning embers, chopped, and finished with a vinegar sauce sharp enough to cut the richness: this is Eastern North Carolina barbecue done the old way, at a downtown Raleigh counter-service spot that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The family even brews the beer on tap. Expect a line on busy days, and plan to eat in, because the room has a friendliness that takeout can't package.

  29. Rank 418. Spinning Bones

    Californian

A rotisserie spot on the little island of Alameda where the meats get a koji and fermented rice marinade before they go on the spit, which explains the depth of flavor you weren't quite expecting. The room is industrial, the counter faces the kitchen, and the menu wanders happily into Hawaiian and Japanese territory. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a casual place doing this much with a rotisserie chicken.

  30. Rank 418. Sunday

    American Bakery

A daytime cafe on a walkable block of vintage shops in St. Augustine, Sunday runs on a simple gospel: breakfast, lunch, and sourdough. The menu is short and unfussy, built on good ingredients and real technique. The rotating desserts tend to disappear fast. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which means the crowds waiting on the sidewalk are not an accident.

Edison bulbs, dark wood, and long high tops set the tone at this gastropub in Logan Square, where the same team behind next-door Lardon turned their attention to dinner. The menu leans comfort without losing its nerve, running from fried cheese curds to shawarma-spiced chicken with flatbread. Craft beer gets serious treatment, with a locally sourced lineup. The Southern snack tray arrives on an actual plastic cafeteria tray, the compartments filled with pimento cheese, pickled veg, chow chow, and pork terrine, which tells you everything about the vibe here. Whoopsie's is a casual Southern restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a daily-changing protein, a sandwich of the day, and the kind of generous portions that make you want to claim a regular's seat. 34. The fried chicken here landed on the New York Times' list of the year's best dishes across the country, which is a notable thing to pull off from a supper club in a town where a June snowstorm is plausible. The bird comes brined and buttermilked, but the real draw is the rotating sauce lineup, classic ranch and pineapple-habanero alongside wilder guest appearances like plum-fenugreek. BB's is a casual Cajun and Creole spot on Westheimer that keeps the kitchen going until 3 a.m. most nights and 4 a.m. on weekends, which tells you who its customers are. The menu splits the difference between New Orleans and Texas, with po'boys, fried seafood platters, and a seafood boil that arrives with enough vegetables to feel responsible about it. Daiquiris are the fuel. Wear whatever survived the evening.

  45. Rank 446. Coronado Cafe

This is a casino coffee shop at the South Point, the kind of 24-hour diner where the real menu starts after midnight. 51. This is a fried-chicken counter on West 72nd with no seating, so the plan is to order, take a bag, and eat on a bench like a person with nothing to prove. The chicken goes into bubbling skillets to order, which is why the wait exists and why nobody is allowed to rush it. 56. Rank 459. Asta

    New American

A gold-painted tin ceiling and a curved chef's counter overlooking an open kitchen set the tone at this Back Bay tasting menu spot. The menu changes on a whim, sometimes mid-week, and leans conceptual enough that not every dish lands with obvious logic. The chefs deliver the food themselves, the wine list is handwritten, and the whole operation runs loose and confident. An old-school fine dining veteran that forgot to be uptight about it.

  57. Neon lights, pop art, and retro arcade machines set the scene at this smash burger shop on West Fourth Street. The whole vibe skews cheerfully unserious, which makes it easy to miss that the kitchen is doing something careful underneath it all. A James Beard semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, it draws a crowd that lingers longer than a burger run usually warrants. The Ladykiller, with its black garlic sauce and local pickle chips, is the one everyone orders first.

The shucker behind the raw bar is working through a daily haul from North Carolina and beyond, which tells you everything about where the priorities lie. St. Roch is an oyster bar and bistro in a converted downtown clothing store, with Louisiana roots informing the menu: barbecue shrimp and grits on weekends, beignets to close. A Michelin Selected restaurant, and a James Beard semifinalist.

  65. Beignets dusted in powdered sugar and a personal bottle of sparkling juice set the tone at this Louisiana-inspired breakfast and lunch spot in Denver's Capitol Hill. The walls are loaded with Creole country kitsch, and the silverware arrives wrapped in bright fabric. The chicory coffee and housemade hot sauce are the real throughlines. A local chain, but one that has regulars debating grits versus potatoes, which is exactly the right argument to be having.

  66. This is a counter-service Hawaiian and Filipino spot in a Las Vegas strip-mall unit, decorated like a beach cottage that has never heard of the Strip, complete with an island mural and a "let your dreams set sail" sign. The cashier calls everyone sweetheart. Plates run big enough to split, and the Spam musubi travels well, which is useful if you're headed somewhere with a bar and a dim view of outside food.

  70. A neighborhood bar and grill housed in a refurbished firehouse in St. Paul's West Seventh corridor, which gives the room more bones than most places trying to cultivate a "local watering hole" feeling. The menu runs American comfort, with a French onion steak sandwich doing a lot of the heavy lifting alongside a burger that locals seem to take personally. The bar handles cocktails, mocktails, and coffee drinks without making you feel like you have to pick a lane.

  80. The dining room floats right over the water on Harbor Island, close enough that boats drift past mid-meal. This is a California casual restaurant where the menu swings wide, from Wagyu burgers to ahi poke to vegetarian bowls, so a table of four with wildly different appetites will manage just fine. The kitchen leans into fresh seafood and premium cuts, but the room itself is the point, and on a clear San Diego afternoon, it really does carry its weight.

  87. Barrels and wine bottles line the walls here, and the shop and tasting bar out front make clear that wine is the whole point. Cooper's Hawk is a full-service American restaurant with a globally roaming menu, the kind of place suburban date-nighters discover and then return to every few weeks. The food swings from Asian-inflected starters to churrasco and braised short ribs, with pasta filling the middle ground for anyone who can't decide.

  95. Rank 472. Eventide Fenway

    New England Seafood

The lobster roll comes on a bao bun, which tells you pretty much everything about what this casual seafood spot near Fenway is up to. Fresh shellfish arrives daily, and the kitchen folds in Asian flavors in ways that feel considered rather than gimmicky. Oysters finished with kimchi ice are a recurring reason to show up. It draws a crowd before and after games, but the food holds up without the excuse.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
