  1. Rank 602. Oberlin

    American

Oberlin is a downtown Providence restaurant where locals take their New York friends to prove the city can be chic and still feed you well. The seafood plates rotate, the staff will talk you through the vermouth list without making you feel like a tourist, and the salt cod brandade arrives with grilled country bread. It's a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant nominee, and the raw bar next door handles the wait.

  2. The Art Deco facade on East 76th Street hasn't changed, but the inside was gutted and reimagined by Martin Brudnizki, which is why this Upper East Side hotel now reads more Corinthia than classic New York dowager. Casa Tua, the members' club with outposts in Miami and Aspen, runs the dining room, so the crowd skews accordingly. It holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star.

  3. The bookshelves and well-worn wood make My Loup feel less like a supper club and more like someone's very good dinner party. The French-leaning menu reads casual but cooks with real intent, seasonal and confidently seasoned, the kind of food where the chef is clearly enjoying themselves. The bar is no afterthought either, named among Punch's best new bartenders. The New York Times and Bon Appétit both took notice, and it's easy to see why.

  5. A pink cake frosted with prickly pear buttercream and scattered with sprinkles sets the tone at this bakery from Mariela Camacho, a Food & Wine Best New Chef and James Beard semifinalist. The conchas are airy under a crackly shell, and the coffee drinks lean into the same playful register as everything else. Nothing here is as sweet as it looks, which is the whole trick.

  6. Roman pizza comes out of an open kitchen at this spacious trattoria in the West Loop, where Joe Flamm followed up Rose Mary with a full homage to the Eternal City. The pasta is made on-site, the wine list is all-Italian, and the amaro cocktails are worth staying for. Carciofo alla giudia, the deep-fried artichoke the place is named for, gives you a pretty clear sense of where the kitchen's priorities lie.

  7. A Forbes Four Star hotel a few blocks from Union Square, with a footprint big enough to include an indoor heated pool, a proper health club, and steam rooms for both sides. The 500-plus rooms lean sleek and contemporary, and the building houses Anzu for California-meets-Japan cooking and Feinstein's, an old-school nightclub format that San Francisco refuses to let die. A solid downtown base when you want the city, not a scene.

    The awards

  8. Six named villas tucked inside Caesars Palace's Octavius Tower, each running around 10,000 square feet and each with its own aquarium, because a marble soaking tub and a private home theater are apparently just table stakes. This Forbes Four Star enclave is a suite hotel for people who find regular suites a little cramped, with a double-sided fireplace, a dining table for twelve, and Roman emperor branding taken completely seriously.

  9. The gilded accents and cherry-red booths at this TriBeCa brasserie give it the feel of a Dionysian feast that's been running for decades, even though it hasn't. Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson run the kitchen, and the room they've built pulls a crowd that treats a Tuesday like a Saturday. The menu leans classic French, oysters and soupe de poisson and white asparagus, done with enough conviction to earn a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur.

  10. Heated sidewalks run through the whole property, which tells you everything about the philosophy at this Forbes Five Star, Michelin Key lodge sitting mid-mountain at Deer Valley. Rooms come with jetted tubs; suites add stone fireplaces and gourmet kitchens. The ski valet handles your gear so you never have to think about it, and the Troll Hallen Lounge is exactly the kind of firelit room you want after a day on the slopes.

  11. Rank 613. Kisser

    Japanese

The name nods to a kissaten, the cozy Japanese tea shop, and this no-reservations Japanese comfort food spot fills up fast enough to make that context feel earned. The menu is short and built for sharing, moving through onigiri, grilled yellowtail collar, and a chilled ramen salad with the unhurried confidence of a team that knows exactly what it's doing. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant.

  12. Rank 614. Stissing House

    Tavern American

Candlelit tables inside an 18th-century building that, to be honest, should never have stopped being an inn. Clare de Boer of King in the West Village runs this Pine Plains tavern, and the kitchen treats apparent simplicity as a discipline rather than a shortcut. Food & Wine named it one of the top US restaurants in 2025, and it landed a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant. Probably worth the drive from anywhere you are.

  13. Rank 615. Lucia

    Italian

House-made pasta and cured meats anchor the menu at this classic Italian restaurant in Bishop Arts, where the kitchen leans on seasonal Texas produce to do the talking. The menu rotates, so regulars rarely eat the same meal twice. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the chef earned a James Beard nomination for Outstanding Chef. Book ahead; the room fills fast and stays that way.

  14. Rank 616. Four Kings

    Cantonese

Walls plastered with Polaroids and faded Cantopop posters set the mood at this Chinatown restaurant, where the cooking is as high-energy as the room. The menu is compact Cantonese with a loose, playful hand: claypot rice with bacon and sausage, mapo tofu spaghetti that shouldn't work but clearly does. Reservations vanish fast, and the walk-in line forms before doors open. Bon Appétit and Esquire both named it among America's best new restaurants in 2024.

  15. A chalkboard outside suggests a Champagne breakfast, and inside this little bungalow on the St. Mary's strip, that feels like the most sensible advice you'll get all week. Cullum's Attaboy is a walk-in, counter-service brunch spot doing affordable French luxury, think proper omelets, hollandaise, and caviar appearing with suspicious regularity. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and a James Beard nomination followed.

  16. Rank 618. Sarma

    Eastern Mediterranean

The menu at this lively Somerville small-plates spot runs Eastern Mediterranean at its core, then wanders wherever it pleases, poutine with fried halloumi curds one moment, jalapeño cornbread with feta the next. Chef Cassie Piuma treats the mashup as a method, not a gimmick, and it holds together more often than it has any right to. A James Beard Outstanding Chef nominee, she keeps the room packed and the menu long enough that regulars still find surprises.

  17. Every room has a lanai big enough to actually live on, and guests frequently do. Halekulani is a classic Waikiki beachfront hotel that runs on the kind of unhurried, attentive service that feels almost anachronistic now. The spa draws from Hawaiian, Asian, and South Pacific traditions, and surfing lessons are steps from the lobby. Forbes Four Star and a Michelin two-key property, it wears its reputation quietly, which is part of the point.

  18. Thai hip-hop overhead and papaya salad that bites back even on medium spice sets the tone fast at this street food restaurant from James Beard Award-winning chef Benchawan Jabthong Painter. The menu pulls from across Thailand rather than settling into one region, so the pad see ew and house curries share the table with Northern Thai dishes her grandmother used to make. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  19. The Rocky Mountain views from this downtown luxury hotel are so insistent, staring back at the Rockies from nearly every room, that forgetting you're in Denver takes real effort. Earth tones and a modern-residential feel keep the aesthetic grounded rather than fussy. The Four Seasons holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star, and the staff's habit of anticipating what you need before you ask is the thing guests tend to mention first.

  21. The chef here built a following on a hand roll cart before graduating to this tight, buzzy sushi shop on Middle Street, where almost everything comes from Gulf of Maine fishermen. Named a Food & Wine Best New Chef and a James Beard semifinalist, Jordan Rubin treats local seafood as a point of pride rather than a compromise. The tuna de tigre, a New York Times-noted dish, makes a pretty strong case for staying close to home.

  22. Garage doors, string lights, and colorful tablecloths in a former parking lot, which tells you exactly what kind of house party this counter-service spot wants to be. The Lao-American cooking lands hard: papaya salad that makes your eyes water, chiles and fish sauce everywhere, and a smashburger spiked with lemongrass pork sausage that shouldn't work as well as it does. A James Beard semifinalist and on the New York Times Restaurant List.

  23. A lobby nicknamed "Houston's Living Room" anchors this Forbes Four Star downtown hotel, with a grand staircase rising through 30 floors of recently renovated rooms. Richard Sandoval runs the restaurant, a 1920s-style speakeasy keeps the bar tab going, the spa does a bourbon-and-brown-sugar scrub, and there's a Krigler perfume shop for anyone who wants to smell like old Hollywood between Astros games.

  24. Rank 626. Basta

    Contemporary Italian-American

A wood-burning oven anchors the open kitchen at this contemporary Italian-American restaurant, where concrete floors and cream walls keep things industrial without feeling cold. The bread comes from the sister bakery next door, which tells you something about how seriously the team takes the details. Family-style sharing is the move here. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, and the room fills fast with people who already know the menu by heart.

  25. The Palazzo tower is all suites, starting at 720 square feet, decorated in contemporary Italian style rather than the gondola-and-canal pageantry next door at The Venetian. Seven pools, Egyptian linens, remote-controlled shades against that relentless desert sun. Thomas Keller and Wolfgang Puck both have restaurants here, which gives the whole thing a certain critical mass. A Forbes Four Star resort that earns its quieter register amid the Strip's general enthusiasm for spectacle.

  26. A bakery run by a former artist who, finding no local mills in Oklahoma's wheat belt, simply found a farmer and milled her own grain. The sourdough-heavy menu leans into specials like French onion soup Danishes and ube-blue corn coffee cake, which is either wildly creative or deeply unhinged, depending on your mood. Cat Cox won a James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker in 2025. Open Saturdays, with a line down the block before the doors even open.

  27. Sleek glass doors open onto a room that feels like it's been broken in nicely, with Danish chairs, warm wood, and a bar you'd actually want to sit at. The Musket Room is a fine dining spot on Elizabeth Street where Mary Attea runs a seasonal menu that shifts often enough to keep regulars guessing. Tasting menus come in omnivore or vegan, or you can go à la carte, which is a small mercy. A James Beard nominee two years running.

  28. Rank 630. Anixi

  29. Rank 630. Firstborn

    Innovative Chinese-American

Tucked into Mandarin Plaza on Broadway, this contemporary Chinese American restaurant and bar is the project of a first-generation chef cooking his own story onto the plate. The cocktail program is serious enough to earn national bartender recognition, so start there before the food arrives. Dishes are built for sharing, the kitchen is open to the room, and the whole setup feels more like a dinner party than a transaction.

  31. Eighty-two floors above Lower Manhattan, this Forbes Five Star hotel puts you a block from the World Trade Center with views that sweep across the Oculus and the harbor beyond. The neighborhood has quietly become a proper destination, with Brookfield Place and the Westfield shops within easy reach and decent restaurants in every direction. It suits the finance crowd and the tourists who want the postcard skyline without midtown noise.

This Forbes Five Star spa at Wynn leans into Asian- and Middle Eastern-inspired treatments alongside a feng shui-based ritual that works through foot, massage, and scalp in one long, thorough session. 39. Art Deco bones, dim light, and a bar up front that moves at a convincing clip: Le Rock is a proper French brasserie tucked into the ground floor of Rockefeller Center. The team behind Frenchette runs it, and a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur followed. Seafood platters, duck confit, classic sauces, and profiteroles in buckwheat honey fudge cover the expected ground, with a little tableside theater to keep things lively.

  40. Monogrammed pillows and a rooftop pool with cabanas that double as massage suites or impromptu offices set the tone at this Forbes Four Star, Michelin two-key hotel in Beverly Hills. The Living Room just off the lobby draws the kind of crowd that technically doesn't need to be seen yet always is. The spa, The Belvedere brasserie, and a level of service that feels almost antiquated in the best sense round out the package.

    The awards

  41. The Old Post Office building has been around forever, and the bones show it: 16-foot ceilings, original windows, hardwood floors, and a grand lobby skylight that turns the whole atrium gold on a clear afternoon. Now a Waldorf Astoria hotel, it sits squarely between the Capitol and the White House, which suits the guest list. Velvet, marble, and gilded finishes set the tone; a Forbes Four Star and a full spa seal it.

    The awards

  42. At this Korean wine bar on Division Street, banchan is the main event, not the preamble. The chef builds a daily set of small plates that sit somewhere between Seoul, Lyon, and Palermo, leeks vinaigrette with Chinese hot mustard, eggplant crushed into something caponata-adjacent. The kitchen is tiny, the room tinier, and the menu stubbornly its own thing. The New York Times placed it among the city's 100 best restaurants.

  43. Rank 645. Pêche

    Seafood

A wood-burning grill and a marble raw bar anchor this rustic-industrial seafood restaurant on Magazine Street, where everything worth eating came out of the Gulf not long ago. The smoked tuna dip is reason enough to sit down, but the real move for a group is a whole fish with a few sides. Food & Wine named the team among its Best New Chefs in 2024, and the New York Times put it on their New Orleans list. Loud, convivial, no bad seats.

The kitchen counter is the best seat in the house, which is saying something given how few seats there are. The team behind it landed on Bon Appétit's best new restaurants list and The New York Times' Miami roundup, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed. Small plates, natural pours, and a room that fills up fast.

  45. Rank 647. Raf's

    French-Italian

The house-made bread arrives before you've settled in, and that sets the tone. Raf's is a modern French bistro on Elizabeth Street with enough Italian soul to keep things interesting, the kind of room that feels like it's been around forever even when it hasn't. Pastry Chef Camari Mick is a James Beard semifinalist, and the desserts make that plausible. Walk-ins can usually find a spot at the bar, which is honestly not a bad outcome.

  46. Rank 648. Chilte

    Modern Mexican

The restaurant's unofficial motto translates roughly to "I don't give a damn," which is a curious thing to post when your birria arrives in hand-pressed squid ink tortillas with miso consommé. Chilte is a modern Mexican restaurant and bar in a revamped motor hotel on Grand Avenue, and Food & Wine named the chef one of its Best New Chefs. 49. Leather window seats overlooking Lake Michigan come standard in many rooms here, which sets the tone for this luxury hotel perched above the Magnificent Mile. 51. Fifty clapboard cottages built in the Low Country style sit among rivers, marshes, and Spanish-moss-draped maritime forest midway between Hilton Head and Savannah. This sprawling resort holds a Forbes Five Star and two Michelin Keys, and the Southern hospitality is less a policy than a local condition. Screened porches, abundant waterways, and a 13,000-square-foot spa keep guests occupied long after they've run out of excuses to stay.

  52. The butterfly motif is everywhere at this Forbes Four Star resort on the Strip, said to bring good luck, though the casino probably has its own opinions on that. Suites run to floor-to-ceiling Strip views, limestone and marble baths, and TVs that swivel to follow you around the room. The spa fills 37 treatment rooms, and XS, the nightclub on the property, has a wading pool and a chandelier over the dance floor, because of course it does.

  53. A neoclassical pile atop Nob Hill, the kind of building that makes you straighten your posture just walking through the door. This hotel holds a Forbes Four Star and fits the Ritz-Carlton template well: renovated rooms with a modern-classic feel, that famously gracious service, and a cable car stop right outside for anyone who wants to arrive without a town car and a fleece vest.

  54. Rooms here run from around 450 to 1,700 square feet, which tells you what kind of hotel this is before you've seen the mahogany or the views over Rittenhouse Square. It holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star, and it earns both through sheer scale and quiet confidence rather than flash. The square outside stays green and walkable, and the neighborhood around it is about as good a base as Philadelphia offers.

  56. The line out front of this Doraville strip-mall spot does the advertising. Kamayan ATL is a Filipino neighborhood restaurant built around kamayan, the tradition of eating communally by hand, and the family-style menu leans into classics and regional dishes with equal confidence. A James Beard semifinalist, it started as a pop-up and never lost that devoted, word-of-mouth energy. Book ahead; the room is small and the fans are loyal.

  57. Rank 661. Starship Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

The bagels here are kettle-boiled and hand-rolled, and the owner once won New York's Bagelfest twice, which is its own kind of declaration. This is a counter-order bagel shop with a line out the door and spreads that work for both the plain-schmear traditionalist and whoever orders the avocado toast-but-make-it-a-bagel sandwich. A James Beard nominee two years running, and on Eater's Dallas essentials list. Get there early, or just accept the wait.

  58. The 130 rooms here are bungalows scattered among heritage oaks, stained the same quiet brown so they nearly disappear into the hillside. This Forbes Five Star resort sits deep in Sonoma wine country, with vineyard views from two pools, an archery range, a yoga lawn, and an 11-treatment-room spa that will absolutely derail your itinerary. The terrace at the bar, with Mount St. Helena on the horizon and a local pour in hand, makes a compelling case for doing nothing at all.

  59. A Guy Dill bronze anchors a circular marble lobby that feels less like a hotel check-in and more like a museum atrium you can sleep in. This Four Seasons occupies the top floors of a 48-story FiDi tower, which means guest rooms start at the 37th floor and the Golden Gate sits framed in the distance on clear days. The Ferry Building is a short walk; hoodies, perhaps not the move here. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

  60. The rooftop pool is reserved strictly for guests, which is not a given in Los Angeles. L'Ermitage Beverly Hills is an independent boutique hotel with just over a hundred suites, and the whole operation is built around that number staying small. Staff learn names and preferences fast, the balconies overlook a quiet, tree-lined street, and the people checking in tend to prefer that nobody knows they're there. It holds a Michelin 2 Keys and a Forbes Four Star.

    The awards

  61. The grand lobby is all white marble, cherry blossom wall panels, and a sculptural fixture hanging in a 26-foot vaulted ceiling, a deliberate exhale from the massive LED tower blazing outside. Crockfords is a Forbes Four Star luxury hotel tucked inside Resorts World, and the contrast is the whole point. Rooms extend to villas and palaces, a dedicated ambassador is on call around the clock, and the casino, restaurants, and theater are right there when the calm wears off.

    The awards

  62. Ski-in/ski-out from Empire Pass, with staff who will warm your boots and help you buckle them if you ask, which sets the tone for the whole operation. Montage Deer Valley is a full-scale mountain resort with craftsman-style rooms, a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, and year-round access to hiking, biking, and fly-fishing when the snow melts. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a Michelin Key.

    The awards

  63. A single, gigantic pancake made with locally ground cornmeal, mochi rice, and farmers' market fruit tells you most of what you need to know about this all-day cafe in Alhambra. The chef puts that same deliberate care into dinner, where a feast builds easily alongside sake and a wine list that somehow doesn't look like every other restaurant's wine list. Mediterranean villa architecture on the sand in Sunny Isles, roughly halfway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, which puts it closer to the water and further from the chaos than most South Beach options. This Forbes Five Star resort leans into the European feel with terraces, ocean views, and rooms large enough to include a full sitting room and an oversized soaking tub. Red lounge chairs dot the beach, and a separate family pool means the adults-only stretch stays that way.

    The awards

  65. Elliott Bay views stop conversations mid-sentence here, and the Bay Rooms are built around that fact, with floor-to-ceiling windows and marble soaking tubs positioned accordingly. This downtown Four Seasons sits steps from the Seattle Art Museum, with a 40-foot rooftop infinity pool and a coffee concierge who shows up at your door between six and ten. A Forbes Four Star hotel that takes the Pacific Northwest aesthetic seriously, pale woods and all.

  66. Rank 670. Vestige

    Japanese

A contemporary Japanese tasting menu restaurant on the Mississippi Gulf Coast sounds like a typo, but Ocean Springs has quietly harbored serious cooking for years. Vestige runs through glimmering plates of bafun uni and koji with the care of somewhere twice the size of this quaint dining room. Modern art on the walls, generously spaced tables, and staff who never make the elaborate feel intimidating. A James Beard Nominee for Outstanding Restaurant.

  67. The 101-story tower was designed by Jeanne Gang, making it the tallest building by a female architect, which is the kind of fact that gets dropped at every rooftop cocktail hour. This St. Regis hotel sits along the Chicago River in quiet Lakeshore East, with Lake Michigan views and a wellness floor running spa, pool, and gym. Millennium Park is a short walk; a small private park sits right behind the building for when you'd rather not walk anywhere at all.

  68. The signature scent is Southern magnolia, pumped through the lobby before you even spot the flowers. This Forbes Four Star hotel occupies a Beaux Arts building that spent its previous life as a department store, and the bones show in the best way: grand marble, a lush courtyard with a fountain, and guest rooms that feel lifted from a proper New Orleans mansion. Canal Street is right outside when you need it, and the jazz lounge is right inside when you don't.

  69. Bay windows framing the Mississippi River are a good place to start with The Windsor Court, a Forbes Four Star hotel that plants a bit of English countryside inside New Orleans' business district. The 316 rooms run sky-blue and cream, with traditional furnishings that somehow don't feel stiff. A full-service spa, pool, and The Grill Room round it out, the last one drawing the kind of crowd that actually made a reservation.

  70. The view from the upper floors puts the White House close enough to make you feel briefly important. This Italian Renaissance hotel on Lafayette Square has been the discreet address of choice for presidents, diplomats, and people who prefer their name not in the papers, and it carries that old-world air without letting the plumbing get old-world too. Holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star.

    The awards

  71. Homemade tofu and rotating banchan are the whole point here, a Korean banchan shop in Emeryville where the menu moves with the seasons in a way most restaurants only claim to. Persimmon kimchi in fall, sweet corn swirled with tofu in summer, snap peas and artichoke when spring shows up. Steve Joo, a Food & Wine Best New Chef, started with tofu and has built something genuinely singular around it. The fried dooboo set is the move.

  72. Perched on Lady Bird Lake with the Congress Avenue Bridge just visible from the grounds, this Forbes Four Star hotel manages the rare trick of sitting in downtown Austin without feeling like it. A recent renovation refreshed the rooms and brought in a new restaurant and bar, both leaning into Texas-meets-Latin cooking. Visiting musicians and celebrities have long made it a preferred bolthole, which tells you something about the noise level in the lobby.

  73. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the guest rooms frame Inner Harbor views that do most of the decorating for you. This Forbes Four Star hotel is a waterfront glass tower with a lobby art collection serious enough to slow you down before check-in. The fourth floor holds a 10,000-square-foot spa and the city's only waterfront infinity pool, which is the kind of amenity that makes it hard to remember there's a city outside.

  74. Rank 678. Gusto Bread

    Artisanal Mexican

A Long Beach panadería where the pastries draw on Mexican and Indigenous baking traditions, Gusto Bread makes a kouign-amann with nixtamalized corn folded into sourdough dough, which tells you everything about how the team approaches the classics. Conchas, multigrain loaves, and seasonal pastries round out the case. A James Beard nominee for Outstanding Bakery, it draws visitors from well outside the neighborhood who planned their morning around it.

  75. Cushioned chairs and walls hung with paintings and photographs give this South Loop seafood spot the feel of a 1930s Hollywood supper club, which is either kitsch or genius depending on your mood. The kitchen keeps things tighter than the decor suggests, letting quality ingredients carry seafood dishes with global influences. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and Artful Living named it one of the five most stylish restaurants in the country.

  76. A tasting menu restaurant from Andrew Black, who took home the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest. The room reads swank, the menu shifts with the season, and the cocktails are the kind of thing where "oxtail fat-washed rye" appears on the list without irony. Oklahoma City has more going on than people assume, and this place is a fair part of why.

  77. The Canlis salad gets made tableside, which tells you exactly the kind of place this is: old-school fine dining with a capital F, perched on a cliff above Lake Union with views that earn their keep. A five-course prix fixe leans into Northwest ingredients with a quiet nod to the restaurant's Hawaiian roots. Food & Wine named it among the top US restaurants in 2025, and the wine program has a hall of fame plaque to its name.

  78. Rank 682. Starship Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

  79. The cheeseburger on a housemade English muffin has become something of a Houston landmark, but at this EaDo bistro the menu makes every decision feel equally consequential. Nancy's Hustle holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod, and the cooking is seasonal and bold without being precious about it. The room stays packed and loud most nights, which somehow only adds to the fun.

  80. Kin is a tasting-menu restaurant where dinner is served at a communal table, so you'll be making small talk with strangers between courses, whether or not you came for that. The menu changes monthly and leans on Idaho ingredients. The chef won a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mountain, the first Idaho chef to do it. The bar next door does cocktails and shareable bites for people not ready to commit to a whole evening.

  81. A butler, a bottle of champagne, and a ceremonial saber await at this grand hotel two blocks from the White House, where the nightly sabering ritual sets the tone. The coffered ceilings and Palladian windows date to an opening presided over by Coolidge, and the corner of 16th and K has been D.C.'s definitive power address ever since. A Forbes Four Star property, and the kind of place foreign dignitaries treat as a given.

  82. The marble lobby and English motor court set the tone for this full-service Gold Coast luxury hotel before you've even checked in. Art Deco bones, fireplaces in the guest rooms, white marble baths, and only ten rooms per floor mean it never feels like a convention block. Staff famously decline tips, which either says something about the service culture or about Chicago. A Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key.

    The awards

  83. Frank Gehry designed the building, and the tenth-floor lobby faces his Walt Disney Concert Hall across the street, so the views start before you check in. This luxury hotel in Downtown L.A. holds a Forbes Four Star and runs like an urban resort: rooftop infinity pool, a spa, a public art collection, and two José Andrés restaurants on site. Rooms lean mid-century modern with marble bathrooms and enough tech to feel like a spaceship.

  84. Rank 689. Yank Sing

    Dim Sum Chinese

The carts still roll here, which is the whole point. Yank Sing is a dim sum shop in the Financial District that holds to the old push-cart service at a time when most places gave it up. Staff wear headsets and radio the kitchen when something you want hasn't come around yet, a detail that somehow makes it feel both retro and efficient. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Expect a wait at peak hours.

  85. A 13-story Sol LeWitt mural dominates the atrium lobby, bouncing blue and purple across a cable-and-aluminum sculpture, which is quite the check-in distraction. This all-suite hotel in Battery Park City sits closer to Wall Street than to anything edgy, but the rooftop lounge on the 16th floor, with Hudson River and Statue of Liberty views, softens the corporate geometry considerably. Forbes Four Star.

  86. Rank 692. Penny

    Seafood

Two marble counters run the length of the kitchen, fronted by mounds of ice holding oysters, clams, and Champagne in roughly equal proportion. Penny is an all-bar seafood restaurant above Claud in the East Village, and the whole point is watching things get shucked, sliced, and dressed in front of you. It landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list. Most seats are walk-in, so arrive before doors open if you'd like one.

  87. Rank 693. Seabird

    Southern Seafood

Swordfish schnitzel doesn't show up on many Southern seafood menus, but Dean Neff, a James Beard Outstanding Chef nominee, has that kind of restless disposition. Seabird is a full-service seafood restaurant on the Wilmington waterfront, nautical in feel without leaning on the clichés, serving dinner and weekend brunch. The catfish and grits crowd and the caviar deviled eggs crowd somehow occupy the same room, and neither seems bothered by the other.

  89. Twelve seats, one seating, and roughly ten courses tracing the Philippines' complicated history with the Pacific Northwest. This intimate tasting room in South Seattle builds menus around heirloom grains, fermented local produce, and house-rolled miki noodles while serving up genuine cultural context alongside every plate. A James Beard nominee for Outstanding Chef, the chef here makes the backstory feel inseparable from the food, which is a harder trick than it sounds.

  91. Rank 697. Superiority Burger

    Vegetarian American

The quinoa-chickpea-walnut burger that made Brooks Headley famous is still on the menu at this vegetarian burger shop in the East Village, now in a bigger room with vintage diner bones. Nothing here pretends to be meat, which turns out to be the whole point. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a New York Times top-100 spot follow naturally from cooking that treats bold seasoning and smart texture as the actual job. Save room for dessert; Headley came up as a pastry chef.

  92. Green chile-jack croissants and elote danishes filled with roasted corn and crema make clear what kind of bakery this is: one that bakes from the region, not the Pinterest board. The Burque Bakehouse is a neighborhood artisan bakery with a farmers-market past and a regular line of locals who apparently have good morning routines. It earned a James Beard Outstanding Bakery nomination in 2024 and a semifinalist nod in 2026.

  93. Rank 699. Virtue

    Southern

Skillet cornbread arrives with a steak knife and honey butter, which tells you most of what you need to know about Erick Williams's Southern restaurant in Hyde Park. The dining room is warm and unhurried, the kind of place the university crowd treats as a standing Thursday plan. Williams holds two James Beard Awards, and the Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand. The cooking is rooted and serious without ever feeling like a lecture.

  94. Rank 700. République

    Mediterranean

The brick-and-skylight nave of a former bakery on La Brea sets the stage for one of those all-day operations that actually pulls off both halves. Mornings belong to the pastry counter, where the team's James Beard Award-winning work draws lines before the doors open. By evening the open kitchen is running a Southern European Mediterranean menu for a full dining room that never quite empties.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
