The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section

  1. Rank 4031. Xela

    Coffee

  2. The dining room is dressed as a Seoul street corner, bus station facades and all, which either tells you everything or nothing until you're sitting inside it with a plate of chicken buldak in front of you. Noori Pocha is a Korean pojangmacha-style restaurant, the kind built around the late-night, post-work food cart tradition, with a menu to match. The New York Times put it on their 2024 Restaurant List, and the K-pop soundtrack makes that feel completely reasonable.

  3. The gumbo arrives with a crab claw jutting out of the bowl like it owns the place, surrounded by fat rounds of okra and a cloud of white rice. This Creole soul food cafe sits down the street from NASA, has signage that will not help you find it, and is on The New York Times Restaurant List. The fried catfish barely fits the plate, and the chef named the whole operation after his grandmothers, which tells you something about the cooking.

  4. Rank 4105. China Live

    Chinese

A high-ceilinged casual dining room with sizzling woks going on what feels like a hawker center's worth of burners at once, China Live sprawls across multiple floors of Chinatown to fit in a retail section, a cocktail bar, and a fine dining room besides. The main floor does Chinese cooking in several regional styles, from scallion breads rolled like cinnamon buns to mapo tofu that earns the word tingly. Chatty tourists fill the place, which seems to suit everyone just fine.

  5. Rank 4105. Edan Bistro

    Modern Basque

Edan Bistro is a casual Basque restaurant in North Miami, set in a room with bare walls and the decor ambitions of a dentist's waiting area. The decorating budget clearly went into the kitchen, which sends out croquetas and ribeyes in the manner of the San Sebastian spots it's compared to. There's dinner, brunch, and an eight-course tasting menu that ends with gooey Basque cheesecake, so you can escalate at your own pace.

  6. Rank 4105. Shotgun Willie's BBQ

    Texas Barbecue

Prime brisket with a peppery bark is the reason this Texas-style barbecue joint started as a food truck and has since moved twice to keep up with demand. The room runs to booths and picnic tables, road signs and Willie Nelson energy. Jalapeño sausage oozes cheese, the pulled pork is smoky, and the green bean side cooked with brisket has its own cult following. A Michelin Selected Restaurant, and the kind of place where strangers talk across tables.

  8. This is a casino-resort buffet dressed for a wedding, with tiered cakes, whole wheels of cheese, and caviar on blinis next to the miniature pancakes. Sixteen cooking stations mean the crepes and eggs Benedict arrive made to order, and reserving the late-morning slot lets brunch slide into the crab-leg dinner shift. Expect a line, a three-figure bill with the extras, and a plate strategy.

  9. The Lao "crack sauce" on the oysters tells you everything about the approach: Southeast Asian flavor logic applied to a seafood-forward menu, from crudos with coconut and chili jam ponzu to whole fish. James Beard Award winner Phila Lorn, who also runs the notoriously hard-to-book Mawn, opened this one in 2025, and it skews a bit pricier and more oceanic than its sibling, with wok-seared noodles keeping things from getting too precious.

  10. Rank 4111. Cordon Bleu

    Vietnamese

The charbroiler at this pocket-size Vietnamese diner on California Street has been smoking up five-spice chicken and pork since the neighborhood was a different place. A dozen seats total, three to a table and nine at the counter, where you can watch the kitchen move with practiced, unhurried efficiency. Combo plates are the whole point, and the imperial rolls are fearsomely crunchy in a way that feels non-negotiable.

  11. Rank 4111. Lardo

    Sandwich Shop

  12. Rank 4113. Le Suprême

    Brasserie

Le Suprême is a Parisian-style brasserie on the ground floor of the old Book Tower, which means you eat escargot under the kind of ceilings that make you sit up straighter. There's a seafood tower, a proper martini service, and traditional absinthe, so dress like someone with a reason to celebrate. The pastry kitchen sits behind glass in the lobby, and watching it work is a fine way to talk yourself into the profiteroles.

  13. The shelves of imported flour, olive oil, and canned goods are the first thing you navigate on the way to ordering lunch, which about sums up what Andreoli is: a north Scottsdale Italian grocer where the sit-down dining room is just as serious as the pantry. The chef hails from Calabria but ranges freely across the regions, and the whiteboard specials tend toward the kind of dishes that take some explaining. A James Beard nominee.

  14. Paper lanterns and candles keep things moody at this night-market-style Chinese-Thai restaurant on SE Stark, inspired by Bangkok's Chinatown. The team behind Langbaan runs a freewheeling room where wide rice noodles and double-fried chive cakes share space with a kangaroo martini that landed on Esquire's list of the best martinis in America. The New York Times put it on their 2024 restaurant list, which is the kind of thing that happens when the food is this alive.

  15. Rank 4116. Billy Can Can

    Texas American

The deviled eggs come six ways, no two alike, which tells you a lot about how this upscale dining saloon in Victory Park operates. Wild game and seasonal Southern cooking are the through lines, from venison tartare to wild boar lasagna, and the Texas wine list runs deeper than you'd expect anywhere, let alone here. The room leans into its saloon bones without winking too hard at them.

  17. Rank 4119. La Semilla

    Vegetarian Latin American

The cocktails here are built from kitchen scraps, tinctures and syrups made from what most places throw away, which tells you everything about how seriously this modern Latin vegan restaurant takes its zero-waste kitchen. The menu swings from Yucatecan pumpkin-seed dips to a jackfruit Cubano, and the seitan carne asada crunchwrap is an unironic love letter to Taco Bell that somehow works completely on its own terms.

  18. The kitchen started at farmers markets and still runs a stall at Kaka'ako and Kailua, but the mothership is a former gas station in 'Aiea where ceviche tostadas arrive stacked with blue crab tobiko, avocado, and raw shrimp in a lime-green sauce. The whole fried fish and beer-battered tacos hold their own too. A casual seafood spot where it's genuinely hard to find something to skip, which in Honolulu is saying something.

  19. Lamb barbacoa, slow-cooked in a specialized oven built to mimic an underground fire pit lined with maguey leaves, is the whole reason this roomy Chula Vista restaurant exists. It's a build-your-own taco situation: fresh tortillas, salsas, garnishes, and a rich lamb consomme on the side. The kitchen has been doing essentially one thing for decades, and the zucchini flower and huitlacoche quesadillas are the only real detour worth taking.

  20. Rank 4121. babas on cannon

    European Café

Menu painted on the front windows, high tables, espresso foaming in the morning and a cocktail shaker going by afternoon: Babas is a small all-day European-style cafe and bar that operates on a pleasantly loose schedule. The kitchen moves from overnight oats and baked goods at breakfast through deviled eggs and a caviar sandwich later on, which is a pretty wide range for a room you could cross in six steps.

  21. The house-baked rolls have a crust that shatters on contact, sending crumbs in every direction before giving way to pork cold cuts, pâté, and pickled daikon. This bustling Dorchester sandwich shop also stocks Vietnamese groceries, pastries, and hot prepared foods, so people tend to leave with more than they planned. The New York Times put it on their short list of Boston's best restaurants, which for a banh mi counter is a fun sentence to say out loud.

  23. Rank 4121. Bertha's Kitchen

    Lowcountry Soul Food

The fried chicken arrives in a styrofoam container, still crackling from the fryer, and costs around eight dollars with two sides. This counter-service Lowcountry soul food spot has been an old-school institution on Meeting Street for years, run by the daughters of the woman who started it. The okra stew tastes like it was never meant to be written down in a recipe.

  24. The staff will advise you not to order the hot chicken above mild, and they mean it. Bolton's is a no-frills neighborhood soul food counter that predates the hot chicken craze by a decade, which earns it a certain authority. The fried catfish, ordered mild, makes a strong case for itself as the move here, and mild still has something to prove. A Nashville institution, in the most unpretentious sense possible.

  25. Rank 4121. Bongos Cafe

    Caribbean

  26. Rank 4121. Cafe Yaya

    Levantine Café

Cafe Yaya is an all-day neighborhood cafe in Lincoln Park from the team behind Galit, and it opens early enough to catch the weekday breakfast crowd. The menu blends Levantine, French, and Southern ideas, which sounds like a lot until you meet the smoked lamb bacon in a BLT. Order at the counter, stay for the lemon pound cake, and expect a casual, low-key morning that stays well under fine-dining money. Eater has it on its Chicago breakfast list.

  27. Rank 4121. Ceibo

    Uruguayan

The ceibo tree blooms at the bottom of South America, and this dimly lit Adams Morgan restaurant takes its name and its whole spirit from there. The kitchen centers on asado, meats cooked over open flame, with Uruguayan oysters topped with farmed caviar and Patagonian shrimp filling out the seafood side. Sweet potatoes turn up in starters, desserts, and cocktails. Downstairs, a late-night bar pours South American wines and spirits until the weekend crowd thins out.

  28. Rank 4121. Celeste

    Peruvian

The room glows cobalt blue under a neon sign, which is either pretentious or perfect depending on how the ceviche lands, and here it lands. This Peruvian restaurant in Somerville times the lime marinade to the minute before serving, so the fish stays clean and bright rather than mealy. The lomo saltado lets you call the doneness of the beef, a detail that says something about how seriously the kitchen is paying attention.

  29. Rank 4121. City House

    Southern Italian

Germantown was still dozing when this Italian-Southern trattoria and pizza spot opened, and it has been packing the room ever since. The kitchen treats Southern ingredients as native Italian speakers, so cavatelli gets field peas, cornmeal-crusted trout gets salsa verde, and summer pies get loaded with Tennessee tomatoes or ripe peaches. Leave room for dessert; the pastry chef has a following of her own.

  30. This is a Coney Island diner in Southwest Detroit, which means a grilled dog in natural casing, chili sauce, onions, and a stripe of yellow mustard, all handed over a counter lined with swivel stools. It's tiny, long, narrow, and has been feeding night-shift workers and the hungover for ages. Breakfast is the sleeper order, and asking for the hash browns well-done is the only advice you'll need. Cheap, quick, and cash-register simple.

Low-lit dining room, white tablecloths, a bar packed with people eating full meals, and a line forming outside before the door even opens. FIG is a neighborhood bistro running French technique through a Lowcountry pantry, and locals have been steering visitors here for years. The kitchen leans hard into seafood, working whatever the coast gives them that season. The ricotta gnocchi has its own quiet following on the appetizer menu.

  33. Floriole is a Lincoln Park bakery and cafe that started life at a farmers' market and never lost the habit of making everything from scratch. 38. Kevin Gillespie of Top Chef fame runs this chaotic, dinner-party-style restaurant where the menu is different every time and the kitchen is clearly having too much fun. Dishes come out family-style, leaning experimental, the kind of place where a tart topped with strawberry Pop Rocks makes complete sense by the third bite. Good for groups who don't need to know what they're ordering before they show up.

  39. Rank 4121. Hardena

    Indonesian

A steam table loaded with rendang and jackfruit stew is the first thing you see, and the family photos taped to the walls make the second impression. This South Philly Indonesian spot is a home-cooking operation in the most literal sense, now run by the founder's daughter. Rice platters come heaping, sambal comes with the order, and extra scoops are fifty cents, which is the kind of pricing that earns genuine loyalty.

    Edomae Sushi

A 16-seat sushi counter in Sellwood where the omakase is more of a starting point than a fixed path, you can build on it with à la carte nigiri or skip the set entirely. The fish skews edomae, the sourcing is serious, and the prices are modest enough that the place fills quickly with people who figured that out early. The New York Times put it on their Portland list, and it earns the mention without any fanfare.

  43. The spacious bar is built to look like a cantina from the highlands of Jalisco, which tells you a lot about the ambition here. This sit-down taqueria in Southwest Detroit is the brick-and-mortar flagship from a family that has run taco trucks through the neighborhood for close to two decades. Carnitas, tacos al pastor, pork ribs in salsa verde, and a full run of margaritas and palomas round out a menu that earns its place alongside the trucks.

  44. Rank 4121. Maison

    Bistro

The indigo exterior on King Street is your first hint that something deliberate is happening inside. Maison is a Parisian French bistro where the black-and-white tile, low club booths, and platters of escargot do most of the convincing before the menu arrives. The kitchen leans into modern French technique with Lowcountry ingredients, so steak frites shares space with seasonal terrines and housemade black truffle sausages. It bustles most nights, which feels correct.

Navarre is a candlelit neighborhood restaurant on NE 28th where you order by checking boxes on a clipboard with a pencil, like a very pleasant pop quiz. The menu roams the globe in small plates, nearly everything comes in half portions, and the wine list runs about 80 glasses deep. Weekend brunch means eggs ten ways, a mountain of crusty bread, and specials served with oversized vintage spoons. It's on Portland Monthly's and Time Out's best-of lists.

  47. Norikase is a ten-seat omakase counter tucked into a Tinseltown strip mall, the kind of setting where you double-check the address twice. The two-hour meal runs on high-end fish shipped from Japan, and strangers at the bar end up chatting, usually somewhere around the question of whether this is still Duval. A miso soup with a sinigang streak nods to the local Filipino community. Eater and The Infatuation both keep it on their Jacksonville lists.

  53. Rank 4121. Prato

    Pizzeria

Wood-fired pizzas rotate with the season at this Italian-American restaurant on a tree-lined stretch of Winter Park, where vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, and caramel leather booths make the room feel like someone spent real money on "rustic." The kitchen leans heavily on the pizza oven, and the toppings tend toward the unexpected. A Michelin Selected restaurant, it pulls a reliably well-dressed crowd that fills the central bar as steadily as the booths.

  54. Rank 4121. Ravello

    Modern Italian

The terrace alone, lush and open-air, makes a case for lingering over a second glass. This fine dining room inside the Four Seasons runs on family recipes from the chef's own upbringing, which gives the modern Italian menu a warmer footing than the sleek, high-ceilinged space might suggest. Pastas are made in-house, the limoncello is too, and the crowd here dresses like they have dinner reservations, because they do.

  55. Orsay is an Avondale brasserie where French classics and Southern comfort share a menu, so bouillabaisse and chicken and dumplings coexist without a custody battle. Servers still fold your napkin when you step away, a courtesy most of the city has abandoned. There's a vegan menu in a cuisine built on butter, plus a boeuf wellington that needs a day's notice, so plan like it's a small wedding.

  56. RingSide is a white-tablecloth steakhouse where the onion rings arrive piping hot and the martinis arrive cold enough to pass for a legal argument. The bar is sunken and dimly lit, with little booths made for settling in, and the Blazers are usually on, losing quietly. The menu runs to three kinds of Japanese Wagyu and a wine list the size of a hymnal. It also holds AAA Three Diamonds. Dress like you're staying.

  57. Two brothers who started cooking congee in their college apartment now run one of the more quietly singular breakfast and lunch spots in Seattle. The New York Times put it on their Seattle list, which tracks. Open mornings through early afternoon only, so plan ahead.

  58. Rank 4121. St. Jack

    Bistro

The zinc bar top is probably the most honest thing about St. Jack: it tells you exactly what you're in for before you've ordered a drink. This is a French-leaning bistro on NW 23rd, the kind where steak frites and a martini at the bar feels like a complete plan, but where the kitchen also runs scallop crudo and roast chicken goosed with Espelette pepper. A grand cru Burgundy is available if you're feeling generous with yourself.

White subway tile, a wooden counter, and seats that stay full from open to close: Sushi-Wa is a small omakase room tucked into a warehouse district better known for its breweries. The chefs settled into Edomae-style sushi after some searching, and the result is a measured, unhurried procession of bites where restraint does most of the work. A surprising address for this kind of precision, but Charleston has learned to make the trip.

  61. Baked baby pumpkin with yogurt has been landing on tables at this Afghan restaurant in Mount Vernon for what feels like forever, and the room fills with people who know exactly what they're ordering before they sit down. Come with a crowd and ask for family style; the staff takes over from there, spreading large portions across the table until there's no room left to second-guess yourself.

    Izakaya Japanese

The restaurant's name painted across the side of the building sets the tone before you're even inside. Tori Tori is a Mills District izakaya, meaning you'll spend a happy evening moving between yakitori skewers, creative sake cocktails, and fried rice packed with crab. No reservations, so the drill is arriving early or accepting your fate in the line out front, which most regulars seem to take as a point of pride.

    Japanese Noodle Shop

The stainless steel noodle machine in the window tells you everything: this is a udon shop, and udon is the only thing on the menu. The thick wheat noodles come out smooth and just slightly chewy, served in dashi broth hot or cold, spicy or not, with fatty beef, scallions, and tempura bits. The Seaport location has room to breathe after the original Cambridge spot became famous for its lines. The New York Times put it on their 25 best in Boston list.

  65. The nigiri pieces here are cut large, scored deep, and pressed onto generous mounds of rice, which tells you something about what the chef thinks omakase should feel like. Ten seats, nigiri only, and fish shipped twice weekly from Japan. A tuna handroll with avocado and a scallop the size of the rice beneath it keep things from getting too reverent. The beverage list is kindly priced for a room this serious.

  66. Complimentary housemade pita arrives warm at this Lebanese restaurant in Mason, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. The mezza menus run long enough that most tables over-order on appetizers before the kebabs and shawarma ever arrive, which is its own kind of problem to have. The owner has been known to stop at every table with pairing advice, then greet returning guests by name. Come without a hard stop time.

The entrance is easy to miss: a staircase beside Boca's red door, leading well below street level. Sotto is a pasta-forward Italian speakeasy downtown, where the team makes things by hand and pours a lot of table wine, and the antipasti menu will quietly destroy your willpower before the main event arrives. Truffle season turns the tajarin into something quietly serious. The descent sets the mood, and there are enough steps that ordering a second pasta feels almost responsible.

    Sushi

Twelve seats at a counter above Central Park, where the skyline does a lot of the talking before the food even starts. YUGIN is an omakase spot inside the Plaza Hotel, opening with composed seasonal courses before moving into a classical nigiri progression, with faint European touches woven through Japanese technique. Custom ceramics, pristine sourcing, and restrained seasoning throughout, for a crowd that books months out and dresses accordingly.

  71. The fried chicken sandwich here follows a family recipe from the co-owner of Rich Table, which tells you this isn't your average rotisserie counter. Pickled onions, chipotle yogurt, mint, dill, and a honey drizzle all show up in one sandwich, and fermented hot sauce sits on every table for good measure. The fries come dusted with porcini powder. Casual, order-at-the-counter, and close enough to Alamo Square to make a picnic the obvious move.

  73. Rank 4180. Roots Southern Table

    Modern Southern

The open kitchen gives you a view of the whole operation, and it runs with what looks like choreographed precision. Tiffany Derry's modern Southern restaurant in Farmers Branch earns James Beard nominations alongside regulars who could probably recite the menu cold. Duck fat-fried chicken is the calling card, the gumbo is serious, and the cast-iron cornbread arrives first for good reason. Dressy-casual, suburban, and worth the drive from anywhere in Dallas.

  74. The buss up shut here is the size of a shirt and flaky as a biscuit, which the name, Trinidadian slang for "busted up shirt," promises and the kitchen delivers. This is a roti shop in South Ozone Park, cash and carry, no fuss. The New York Times put it on their 100 Best list, and the A train ride plus the half-mile walk from the station is apparently just part of the ritual now.

  75. Rank 4182. Koi Palace

    Cantonese

The koi ponds in the dining room are the first hint that this isn't your average dim sum operation. Koi Palace is a sprawling, upscale Cantonese dim sum hall in Daly City that's been an anchor of the Bay Area scene forever, and the carts still move with unusual confidence. A James Beard semifinalist, it draws weekend crowds willing to wait for siu mai that skew smaller and fresher than the genre norm.

  76. Weekend lines form outside this Inner Richmond bakery before most people have finished their coffee, and the croissants are why. They shatter into a thousand airy layers on first bite, the kind that make every other version feel like a compromise. Pain au chocolat and a ham and cheese round out the short menu. The Civic Center location adds seating and sandwiches, but the original is a pilgrimage of the buttery kind.

  82. The house-made Spam in the kimchi fried rice is either the menu's punchline or its thesis statement, depending on your attitude. Ravi Kapur's Californian-Hawaiian restaurant on Sutter runs on strong cocktails and shareable plates, with an open kitchen keeping the room loud and sociable. The New York Times has called it one of San Francisco's 25 best restaurants, and it's held a Michelin Guide selection since the buzz was at its loudest.

  84. The tlayuda, a large tortilla charred and spread with herby black beans, is a good reason to learn where Ennalls Avenue is. This casual Silver Spring taco shop draws on Oaxacan tradition, so expect moles with real depth alongside the alambres, where grilled meat and melted cheese arrive ready to be scooped into tortillas. The Washington Post and Washingtonian both count it among the D.C. area's top tables, which the no-frills room does nothing to advertise.

    Cajun & Creole

The line outside this Houston breakfast and brunch spot is so reliable that they've worked out a whole system: heaters in winter, water in summer, and occasionally a bouncy castle, which is a sentence you don't type about many restaurants. Southern and Creole comfort food is the draw, wings and waffles being the dish everyone mentions first, with catfish and grits not far behind. Show up when the doors open or plan around the wait.

    Vietnamese

The French dip bánh mì arrives with a cup of beef phở jus for dunking, which tells you everything about how this Inner Richmond restaurant handles Vietnamese food. Chef Rob Lam pulls from both classic technique and contemporary Saigon street food, so the menu lands somewhere between a chicken consommé you'd linger over and jackfruit "pizza" on crispy rice paper. Closer to a special-occasion dinner than a casual bowl spot, price-wise.

  87. Sushi Gen is a Little Tokyo sushi bar that's been around forever, and the line out the door suggests nobody has told it to slow down. The move is a sampler plate of the house favorites, priced like a normal weeknight dinner. If you'd rather steer, grab a seat at the counter and order nigiri à la carte while veteran chefs turn out piece after piece without breaking a sweat. It's casual and cash-friendly, so wear whatever you like.

  88. Rank 4196. Otro Cafe

    Central Mexican Café

Cajeta pancakes topped with banana, crème fraîche, caramel, and candied peanuts are doing a lot of the heavy lifting at this colorful, homey Mexico City-style brunch spot in uptown Phoenix. The chef behind Gallo Blanco brings the same seriousness to chilaquiles and thick, crackling papas fritas. Weekend waits get real, so the attached coffee bar next door exists to make the line bearable. The salsas are not messing around.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
