  1. The roadhouse on the St. Helena highway that turned a working kitchen garden into a wine country institution. Cindy Pawlcyn's casual American grill runs from grilled fish and steaks to a smoked pork sandwich, all pulled through a seasonal, garden-driven lens. The lemon-lime tart, described on the menu itself as "ridiculously tall," delivers on the promise. There's usually a wait at lunch, which says everything about the regulars who keep coming back.

  2. Rank 2002. Gigi's

    Italian

A former diner in Candler Park, now very small and very Italian in the red-sauce-and-checkered-cloth spirit, though the kitchen wanders freely from that premise. Housemade pasta shares the menu with duck off a yakitori grill and fish roe deployed with unexpected confidence. The amaro list is taken seriously, and the tiramisù arrives in tidy little blocks. The New York Times put it on their Atlanta list, as did Esquire.

  3. Rank 2004. Itria

    Italian

Itria takes its name from an ancient Syrian word for pasta, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen takes the subject. This modern Italian fine dining spot on 24th Street runs a tight menu built around crudo and house-made pasta, where a light, unfussy hand does most of the convincing. Bar seating lines the center corridor, and a communal wood table anchors the back, giving the room an easy, convivial feel.

  4. This is the Strip outpost of a Mexico City seafood institution, a sit-down dinner place where the pescado a la talla arrives butterflied and painted half green, half red, which tends to start a debate at the table. Since this is Vegas, the menu adds red meat, so wagyu tenderloin tacos and a beef aguachile share space with the tuna tostadas. Dress like you're impressing someone, because the whole fish encourages it.

  5. Rank 2006. Alice B.

    Californian Mediterranean

Candlelit stone tables and cushioned banquettes set the mood at this modern California-Mediterranean restaurant inside Palm Springs' Living Out community. Sue Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken run the kitchen, turning out wood-roasted seafood and hand-rolled pastas with the kind of ease that makes it look unfair. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the Los Angeles Times put it on their 101 best in California list for 2025.

  6. Rank 2007. Banshee

    New American

Pepperoni butter served by the pint is a solid thesis statement for any restaurant. Banshee is a creative New American spot in East Atlanta where wood floors and whitewashed brick keep things grounded while the kitchen goes in unexpected directions, small plates and pasta sharing the menu with seasonal vegetables that actually pull their weight. The New York Times put it on their Atlanta list, and the crowd that fills it most nights seems to know something you might not yet.

  7. Rank 2007. El Buen Comer

    Mexico City Mexican

Handmade corn tortillas arrive warm at every table, which tells you most of what you need to know about this homestyle Mexico City restaurant on the outer edge of the Mission. The chef, a La Cocina alum, built the menu around guisados, the slow-braised stews that define home cooking in the capital. It's the kind of place where the salsas are made in-house and the chocoflan is non-negotiable.

  9. Rank 2007. Lilia Comedor

    Pacific Northwest Mexican

Blue corn masa dumplings crowned with black trumpet mushrooms, marigold petals from the chef's garden, and a menu that changes every week: Lilia Comedor moves at the pace of what's actually growing. It's a relaxed sit-down restaurant where Mexican American cooking meets Pacific Northwest ingredients, handled with the kind of technical precision that makes the combination feel inevitable rather than conceptual.

  10. A bowl of sesame seeds arrives at the table for you to grind yourself before stirring them into the tonkatsu sauce, which tells you what kind of katsu shop this is. The pork is carefully sourced, the panko is made in-house, and the rice comes from Hokkaido. Reservations are hard to come by, which matters in a city where locals can get a perfectly decent plate-lunch katsu for half the price.

  11. The dining room is dressed as a Seoul street corner, bus station facades and all, which either tells you everything or nothing until you're sitting inside it with a plate of chicken buldak in front of you. Noori Pocha is a Korean pojangmacha-style restaurant, the kind built around the late-night, post-work food cart tradition, with a menu to match. The New York Times put it on their 2024 Restaurant List, and the K-pop soundtrack makes that feel completely reasonable.

  12. The gumbo arrives with a crab claw jutting out of the bowl like it owns the place, surrounded by fat rounds of okra and a cloud of white rice. This Creole soul food cafe sits down the street from NASA, has signage that will not help you find it, and is on The New York Times Restaurant List. The fried catfish barely fits the plate, and the chef named the whole operation after his grandmothers, which tells you something about the cooking.

  13. Rank 2016. China Live

    Chinese

A high-ceilinged casual dining room with sizzling woks going on what feels like a hawker center's worth of burners at once, China Live sprawls across multiple floors of Chinatown to fit in a retail section, a cocktail bar, and a fine dining room besides. The main floor does Chinese cooking in several regional styles, from scallion breads rolled like cinnamon buns to mapo tofu that earns the word tingly. Chatty tourists fill the place, which seems to suit everyone just fine.

  14. Rank 2016. Edan Bistro

    Modern Basque

Edan Bistro is a casual Basque restaurant in North Miami, set in a room with bare walls and the decor ambitions of a dentist's waiting area. The decorating budget clearly went into the kitchen, which sends out croquetas and ribeyes in the manner of the San Sebastian spots it's compared to. There's dinner, brunch, and an eight-course tasting menu that ends with gooey Basque cheesecake, so you can escalate at your own pace.

  16. The Lao "crack sauce" on the oysters tells you everything about the approach: Southeast Asian flavor logic applied to a seafood-forward menu, from crudos with coconut and chili jam ponzu to whole fish. James Beard Award winner Phila Lorn, who also runs the notoriously hard-to-book Mawn, opened this one in 2025, and it skews a bit pricier and more oceanic than its sibling, with wok-seared noodles keeping things from getting too precious.

  17. Rank 2020. Cordon Bleu

    Vietnamese

The charbroiler at this pocket-size Vietnamese diner on California Street has been smoking up five-spice chicken and pork since the neighborhood was a different place. A dozen seats total, three to a table and nine at the counter, where you can watch the kitchen move with practiced, unhurried efficiency. Combo plates are the whole point, and the imperial rolls are fearsomely crunchy in a way that feels non-negotiable.

  18. The shelves of imported flour, olive oil, and canned goods are the first thing you navigate on the way to ordering lunch, which about sums up what Andreoli is: a north Scottsdale Italian grocer where the sit-down dining room is just as serious as the pantry. The chef hails from Calabria but ranges freely across the regions, and the whiteboard specials tend toward the kind of dishes that take some explaining. A James Beard nominee.

  19. Paper lanterns and candles keep things moody at this night-market-style Chinese-Thai restaurant on SE Stark, inspired by Bangkok's Chinatown. The team behind Langbaan runs a freewheeling room where wide rice noodles and double-fried chive cakes share space with a kangaroo martini that landed on Esquire's list of the best martinis in America. 20. Rank 2023. Billy Can Can

    Texas American

The deviled eggs come six ways, no two alike, which tells you a lot about how this upscale dining saloon in Victory Park operates. Wild game and seasonal Southern cooking are the through lines, from venison tartare to wild boar lasagna, and the Texas wine list runs deeper than you'd expect anywhere, let alone here. The room leans into its saloon bones without winking too hard at them.

    Vegetarian Latin American

The cocktails here are built from kitchen scraps, tinctures and syrups made from what most places throw away, which tells you everything about how seriously this modern Latin vegan restaurant takes its zero-waste kitchen. The menu swings from Yucatecan pumpkin-seed dips to a jackfruit Cubano, and the seitan carne asada crunchwrap is an unironic love letter to Taco Bell that somehow works completely on its own terms.

  23. Lamb barbacoa, slow-cooked in a specialized oven built to mimic an underground fire pit lined with maguey leaves, is the whole reason this roomy Chula Vista restaurant exists. It's a build-your-own taco situation: fresh tortillas, salsas, garnishes, and a rich lamb consomme on the side. The kitchen has been doing essentially one thing for decades, and the zucchini flower and huitlacoche quesadillas are the only real detour worth taking.

  24. The house-baked rolls have a crust that shatters on contact, sending crumbs in every direction before giving way to pork cold cuts, pâté, and pickled daikon. This bustling Dorchester sandwich shop also stocks Vietnamese groceries, pastries, and hot prepared foods, so people tend to leave with more than they planned. The New York Times put it on their short list of Boston's best restaurants, which for a banh mi counter is a fun sentence to say out loud.

  26. Rank 2027. Bertha's Kitchen

    Lowcountry Soul Food

The fried chicken arrives in a styrofoam container, still crackling from the fryer, and costs around eight dollars with two sides. This counter-service Lowcountry soul food spot has been an old-school institution on Meeting Street for years, run by the daughters of the woman who started it. The okra stew tastes like it was never meant to be written down in a recipe.

  27. The staff will advise you not to order the hot chicken above mild, and they mean it. Bolton's is a no-frills neighborhood soul food counter that predates the hot chicken craze by a decade, which earns it a certain authority. The fried catfish, ordered mild, makes a strong case for itself as the move here, and mild still has something to prove. A Nashville institution, in the most unpretentious sense possible.

  28. Rank 2027. Bongos Cafe

  29. Rank 2027. Ceibo

    Uruguayan

The ceibo tree blooms at the bottom of South America, and this dimly lit Adams Morgan restaurant takes its name and its whole spirit from there. The kitchen centers on asado, meats cooked over open flame, with Uruguayan oysters topped with farmed caviar and Patagonian shrimp filling out the seafood side. Sweet potatoes turn up in starters, desserts, and cocktails. Downstairs, a late-night bar pours South American wines and spirits until the weekend crowd thins out.

The room glows cobalt blue under a neon sign, which is either pretentious or perfect depending on how the ceviche lands, and here it lands. This Peruvian restaurant in Somerville times the lime marinade to the minute before serving, so the fish stays clean and bright rather than mealy. The lomo saltado lets you call the doneness of the beef, a detail that says something about how seriously the kitchen is paying attention.

    Southern Italian

Germantown was still dozing when this Italian-Southern trattoria and pizza spot opened, and it has been packing the room ever since. The kitchen treats Southern ingredients as native Italian speakers, so cavatelli gets field peas, cornmeal-crusted trout gets salsa verde, and summer pies get loaded with Tennessee tomatoes or ripe peaches. Leave room for dessert; the pastry chef has a following of her own.

  32. This is a Coney Island diner in Southwest Detroit, which means a grilled dog in natural casing, chili sauce, onions, and a stripe of yellow mustard, all handed over a counter lined with swivel stools. A steam table loaded with rendang and jackfruit stew is the first thing you see, and the family photos taped to the walls make the second impression. 39. The spacious bar is built to look like a cantina from the highlands of Jalisco, which tells you a lot about the ambition here. This sit-down taqueria in Southwest Detroit is the brick-and-mortar flagship from a family that has run taco trucks through the neighborhood for close to two decades. Carnitas, tacos al pastor, pork ribs in salsa verde, and a full run of margaritas and palomas round out a menu that earns its place alongside the trucks.

Navarre is a candlelit neighborhood restaurant on NE 28th where you order by checking boxes on a clipboard with a pencil, like a very pleasant pop quiz. The menu roams the globe in small plates, nearly everything comes in half portions, and the wine list runs about 80 glasses deep. Weekend brunch means eggs ten ways, a mountain of crusty bread, and specials served with oversized vintage spoons. It's on Portland Monthly's and Time Out's best-of lists.

  45. Rank 2027. Ravello

    Modern Italian

The terrace alone, lush and open-air, makes a case for lingering over a second glass. This fine dining room inside the Four Seasons runs on family recipes from the chef's own upbringing, which gives the modern Italian menu a warmer footing than the sleek, high-ceilinged space might suggest. Pastas are made in-house, the limoncello is too, and the crowd here dresses like they have dinner reservations, because they do.

  46. Orsay is an Avondale brasserie where French classics and Southern comfort share a menu, so bouillabaisse and chicken and dumplings coexist without a custody battle. Servers still fold your napkin when you step away, a courtesy most of the city has abandoned. There's a vegan menu in a cuisine built on butter, plus a boeuf wellington that needs a day's notice, so plan like it's a small wedding.

  47. Two brothers who started cooking congee in their college apartment now run one of the more quietly singular breakfast and lunch spots in Seattle. The bowl is Thai at heart, so expect tom yum shrimp or mala lamb shoulder alongside the straightforward chicken, with seasonal riffs keeping regulars guessing. The New York Times put it on their Seattle list, which tracks. Open mornings through early afternoon only, so plan ahead.

  48. Baked baby pumpkin with yogurt has been landing on tables at this Afghan restaurant in Mount Vernon for what feels like forever, and the room fills with people who know exactly what they're ordering before they sit down. The entrance is easy to miss: a staircase beside Boca's red door, leading well below street level. Sotto is a pasta-forward Italian speakeasy downtown, where the team makes things by hand and pours a lot of table wine, and the antipasti menu will quietly destroy your willpower before the main event arrives. Truffle season turns the tajarin into something quietly serious. The descent sets the mood, and there are enough steps that ordering a second pasta feels almost responsible.

  54. Rank 2060. Roots Southern Table

    Modern Southern

The open kitchen gives you a view of the whole operation, and it runs with what looks like choreographed precision. Tiffany Derry's modern Southern restaurant in Farmers Branch earns James Beard nominations alongside regulars who could probably recite the menu cold. Duck fat-fried chicken is the calling card, the gumbo is serious, and the cast-iron cornbread arrives first for good reason. Dressy-casual, suburban, and worth the drive from anywhere in Dallas.

  55. The buss up shut here is the size of a shirt and flaky as a biscuit, which the name, Trinidadian slang for "busted up shirt," promises and the kitchen delivers. This is a roti shop in South Ozone Park, cash and carry, no fuss. The New York Times put it on their 100 Best list, and the A train ride plus the half-mile walk from the station is apparently just part of the ritual now.

  56. Rank 2062. Koi Palace

    Cantonese

The koi ponds in the dining room are the first hint that this isn't your average dim sum operation. Koi Palace is a sprawling, upscale Cantonese dim sum hall in Daly City that's been an anchor of the Bay Area scene forever, and the carts still move with unusual confidence. A James Beard semifinalist, it draws weekend crowds willing to wait for siu mai that skew smaller and fresher than the genre norm.

  57. The house-made Spam in the kimchi fried rice is either the menu's punchline or its thesis statement, depending on your attitude. Ravi Kapur's Californian-Hawaiian restaurant on Sutter runs on strong cocktails and shareable plates, with an open kitchen keeping the room loud and sociable. The New York Times has called it one of San Francisco's 25 best restaurants, and it's held a Michelin Guide selection since the buzz was at its loudest.

The French dip bánh mì arrives with a cup of beef phở jus for dunking, which tells you everything about how this Inner Richmond restaurant handles Vietnamese food. Chef Rob Lam pulls from both classic technique and contemporary Saigon street food, so the menu lands somewhere between a chicken consommé you'd linger over and jackfruit "pizza" on crispy rice paper. Closer to a special-occasion dinner than a casual bowl spot, price-wise.

  60. Sushi Gen is a Little Tokyo sushi bar that's been around forever, and the line out the door suggests nobody has told it to slow down. The move is a sampler plate of the house favorites, priced like a normal weeknight dinner. If you'd rather steer, grab a seat at the counter and order nigiri à la carte while veteran chefs turn out piece after piece without breaking a sweat. It's casual and cash-friendly, so wear whatever you like.

  61. Walleye reimagined as a fried roulade, filled with mousse made from walleye scraps and served on housemade red mole, is the kind of move that tells you exactly what kind of restaurant this is. Modern Bird is a contemporary American dinner spot where the chef plays textures like a second language, drawing on local Leelanau Peninsula produce. The New York Times put it on their 2025 Restaurant List, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed.

The "FiLao-O-Fish" slider, a catfish riff on a certain drive-through classic, tells you everything about what Seng Luangrath is doing at this Shaw restaurant. Her Laotian cooking already had a following from Thip Khao, but this newer spot pushes wider, folding in Burmese and Thai flavors while staying loose and fun. Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants in 2025, and the room tends to fill fast.

  63. A converted sawmill building with more than twenty stalls and a sprawling patio big enough to make the whole thing feel like a block party. Sawmill Market is Albuquerque's landmark food hall, with handmade pasta and poke bowls and local beer all under one roof, which means everyone in your group gets what they actually want and nobody has to compromise. Locals and out-of-towners fill it in roughly equal measure, which is usually a decent sign.

  64. A waterfront shack that's been around forever, Red's serves its burgers on crusty sourdough with mustard and pickles, which is not the burger you were expecting but absolutely the one the regulars order without looking up. Anthony Bourdain's photo hangs near the register, which tells you something. Grab a table outside on a sunny day and you get the Bay Bridge thrown in, arguably at the lowest price point the Embarcadero has to offer.

Sit on the shaded deck overlooking Newport Harbor and you start to understand what this restaurant is doing. It's a waterfront dining room that leans into New England seafood without leaning on cliché. The tonnarelli with green garlic and Narragansett clams landed on the New York Times' best dishes of 2024 list, and the pasta itself is made in-house daily. A James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, which tracks: the place has that rare ease.

  68. The fried chicken here landed on the New York Times' list of the year's best dishes across the country, which is a notable thing to pull off from a supper club in a town where a June snowstorm is plausible. The bird comes brined and buttermilked, but the real draw is the rotating sauce lineup, classic ranch and pineapple-habanero alongside wilder guest appearances like plum-fenugreek. The chef holds a 2025 James Beard semifinalist nod for Best Chef: Mountain.

Gumbo as dark as a Louisiana bayou at midnight, only built around smoked brisket and wilted greens, is a reasonable summary of what the kitchen is doing here. This modern Cajun-Creole restaurant in Louisville's Schnitzelburg neighborhood lands chef Lawrence Weeks on the New York Times Restaurant List and a James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist nod, both in the same year. The menu takes familiar Southern dishes and quietly tilts them sideways with Haitian, Latin, and Gulf Coast influences.

Charcoal-grilled satay mushrooms from Long Beach share a menu with Dungeness crab curry and lip-tingling beef nam tok at this small, casual Thai restaurant in Atwater Village. The team behind it built a following on Northern Thai-style sausage packed for pandemic pickup, and the cooking has only gotten looser and more confident since. The New York Times put it on their list of the 25 best restaurants in Los Angeles right now, which for a neighborhood spot with a takeout window is saying something.

The New York Times put it on their Austin shortlist, and it's a Michelin Selected pick.

White tablecloths in an Uptown cottage near a bend in the river, which tells you something about how New Orleans operates. Brigtsen's is a Cajun-Creole restaurant where the chef spent years under Paul Prudhomme absorbing the bayou side of Louisiana cooking, then brought it back to the city and blended the two traditions into something that belongs entirely to this place. The room is unhurried, the menu is not trying to be fashionable, and that combination tends to fill tables with regulars.

The mochiko fried chicken, made exclusively from dark meat, is a reasonable place to start understanding what this Hawaiian plate lunch spot in Highwood is about. The chef went from feeding co-workers at a carwash to a brick-and-mortar in what feels like about fifteen minutes. Loco moco, huli huli chicken, and grilled pork belly land on your tray with the kind of confidence that got the place onto the New York Times list of top Chicago restaurants.

  90. Vintage Thai movie posters cover the walls at this West Portal neighborhood Thai spot, where the kitchen takes familiar dishes somewhere more playful. Short rib fried rice comes with cured egg yolk; fried papaya salad arrives battered and crisp with dressing on the side. The kaya toast, pandan custard on pillowy milk bread with a scoop of ice cream, landed on The Infatuation's dessert list and you'll see why. Good for families who want something livelier than the usual takeout routine.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
