  1. Rank 4101. Tallboy

    Cocktail Bar

  2. Rank 4102. Caldwell County BBQ

    Texas-Style Barbecue

The red weathervane out front reads "BBQ," which is all the signage a place like this needs. Walk past the giant mesquite smokers on your way in and you'll already be hungry before you hit the counter. This Gilbert BBQ shop does Texas-style brisket with a coarse peppercorn crust, served by the pound on tin trays at wooden picnic tables. Order early; the popular cuts sell out, and nobody drives out near Mesa Gateway Airport to settle for sides.

  3. Rank 4103. Saint Pasta

    East Coast Italian-American

A neon sign behind the open kitchen reads "Al Dente or Die," which tells you most of what you need to know about this downtown Phoenix pasta joint. Frank Ocean plays where Sinatra might, and "The Sopranos" loops on the wall behind the bar. The vodka sauce built a cult following when the place was a food truck, and the no-reservations line outside suggests that reputation held. Craft cocktails and low-intervention wines round things out.

  4. The name comes from Édith Piaf's nickname, and the French bistro that follows it leans into the reference without being precious about it. The menu is compact and classic, with a Southern accent that surfaces in small ways. The New York Times singled out the French onion soup specifically, which tells you something about where the kitchen's priorities are. Thick-cut, triple-fried frites with Raclette service keep the regulars from straying.

  5. Burmese food in Portland, done by three friends who started at a farmers market and still shop like it. Rangoon Bistro is a casual neighborhood spot with warming curries, noodle dishes, and thoke, the fermented-tea-leaf salads that arrive in a satisfying tangle of crunch and funk. A Malaysian-style fried chicken with coconut rice and belacan nods to where two of the founders spent time living and working. Patio seating, to-go, delivery, the whole deal.

  6. LUVI is a Japanese and Shanghainese restaurant on Tchoupitoulas, tucked behind a door that swaps the traffic for a colorful, hushed dining room. It was serving Shanghainese dishes in New Orleans before most of the city knew to ask. The move is ordering far too many plates, dumplings and the dan dan noodles included, then losing count somewhere around the fourth round. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist.

  10. A neighborhood café where the pastry case pulls equal weight with the coffee menu, Le Buzz sits along a stretch popular with cyclists coming off the trails, which explains the easy, unhurried vibe inside. Wooden furniture, local art on the walls, and a menu of egg dishes and house-made quiche give it a slightly European lean that Tucson has clearly adopted as its own.

  11. The signature move here is the Hazz blend, carne asada folded with mild green chile and melted cheese, and it shows up across the menu at this no-frills Sonoran taco shop in west Phoenix. Order at the counter, everything à la carte, then stake out a table and work the salsa bar, which runs from fresh green to roasty red to a piquant orange. The horchata comes in a bucket. Phoenix New Times has it in their top 50 right now.

  12. Neon glow, velvet booths, a dance pole, and a speakeasy mood that the name alone can't fully prepare you for. The Jackrabbit Lounge is a cocktail bar with a globally wandering small-plates menu, so you can chase a tiki drink with spam musubi or Korean meatballs and no one bats an eye. The kitchen runs late on weekends, which says plenty about the crowd that tends to find this place.

  13. Rank 4116. Nubeluz

    Cocktail Bar

Fifty floors up in the Ritz-Carlton NoMad, this cocktail bar from the José Andrés group takes its name from the Spanish words for cloud and light, which is either poetic or on the nose depending on how far into the menu you are. The views run 270 degrees over the city, and the drinks lean into reimagined classics, from an adonis to a tom collins. Dress accordingly; the room expects it.

  14. Cocorico is a French bakery and café where the owner is actually from France, which saves everyone the usual accent anxiety. Croissants and baguettes share space with a little market of quiches, pasta, and local goods, plus a goat cheese sandwich that Nashville Scene once crowned Best Vegetarian Sandwich. Framed photos of Toulouse and mosaic tile set the scene for a counter-service lunch, with a muffin-sized chocolate cake as the closer.

  15. Long Gong is a Chinese banquet hall set so far west on SW Eighth that the road gives up and the Everglades take over. The tables are big enough to seat a dozen friends, each with a lazy susan roughly the size of a tractor tire. Dishes arrive in bubbling cauldrons kept hot over little grills, which makes a Wednesday lunch feel like someone's birthday. It sits at #23 on The Infatuation's Miami list.

  17. Pancakes with crispy edges and a savory bowl of eggs and Portuguese sausage over rice in bacon cabbage broth on the same menu, and the real problem is choosing between them. Over Easy is a neighborhood breakfast and brunch spot in Kailua that's been the area's anchor long before brunch became an O'ahu-wide pastime. The menu is short enough to read fast and long enough to make you wish you'd brought someone to split the ordering burden.

  18. The 40-seat dining room shares a building with a nightclub, which does set a certain tone. Present Tense is a Japanese restaurant where the chef's Italian background keeps surfacing on the plate, squid ink noodles with nduja and wasabi, koji chicken with shoyu au poivre. The New York Times named it one of Nashville's 25 best restaurants. The chef's counter fills early, and by the time the martinis land, nobody's rushing anywhere.

  20. A casual East Downtown wine bar and pizza spot where the menu shifts with the seasons but fennel sausage pizza and rigatoni Bolognese tend to anchor things. The vegetable dishes punch above their station, like a cabbage salad in pistachio-apricot agrodolce that sounds like a dare and tastes like a plan. Sister to Nancy's Hustle next door, which means the neighborhood is doing just fine.

  21. Rank 4126. Bake Sum

    Cantonese Bakery

The croissant stuffed with Thai tea custard and mango puree probably tells you everything about what Bake Sum is doing: Cantonese bakery traditions running headlong into pan-Asian flavors via laminated dough. The okonomiyaki danish keeps its bonito flakes and smoky fishiness intact. The New York Times flagged their croissubi in 2024. Counter service, a few sidewalk tables, and a line worth joining on a Grand Lake morning.

  23. Rank 4126. Paloma

    Mexican

Flower-strung lights and live music greet you at this downtown Santa Fe Mexican restaurant, where the kitchen gardens supply much of what lands on the table. The menu runs traditional with a knowing detour or two, and the lamb posole in guajillo bone broth earned a nod from the New York Times. The room is warm and a little festive on a Wednesday, which is either a selling point or a warning, depending on your mood.

  25. Pink Lotus is a casual Thai neighborhood spot in West Midtown, tucked inside a big brick building where industrial bones meet decor that's colorful and a little goofy. The menu skips the sweet-and-sticky Americanized staples and heads for regional dishes, including a smoky northern chili dip and khao soi. Lunch sets pair two dishes, which is the polite way to order twice without anyone noticing.

  28. Rank 4131. Ivan Ramen

    Ramen Shop

Ivan Orkin, a New Yorker who built his reputation running ramen shops in Tokyo, brought the whole project back home to the Lower East Side. The ramen shop is compact and casual, counter seats facing the kitchen, with a menu that mixes Japanese technique and New York personality without making a big fuss about either. The tsukemen, where you dip thick fresh noodles into rich pork broth and season to taste, rewards the curious. Grub Street named it one of the city's best restaurants for kids.

  29. Rank 4131. L'Oursin

    French

The bar is lit by a marquee sign, the wine list describes something as "the purple nurple of pet-nat," and fresh urchin sometimes arrives in the spiny shell with bread and butter. This wainscoted French bistro on Capitol Hill pairs classic technique with Northwest seafood, keeps the natural wine program largely French, and still serves pimento cheese left over from a pop-up era because the menu has a sense of humor about itself.

  30. Tucked inside ABC Carpet & Home, this vegetarian restaurant runs on the kind of clean-lined, chandelier-scattered energy that makes a green juice feel entirely appropriate in a wine glass. The menu moves through breakfast, brunch, and lunch with pressed juices and kombuchas alongside clever plant-based plates. The New York Times named it among the 100 best restaurants in the city, which the business crowd and the ladies-who-lunch set have known for a while.

  31. Rank 4135. King

    Mediterranean

The menu changes daily and fits on a single card, which tells you most of what you need to know about King. This SoHo neighborhood restaurant runs a short Mediterranean lineup built around whatever looks good at the greenmarket, with a bar up front that fills early and an intimate back room hung with bright art. The team met at London's River Café, and that unhurried confidence shows in food that makes simplicity seem like a deliberate flex.

  32. Part coffee shop, part neighborhood bottle shop, part full kitchen, Story Hill BKC somehow makes all three feel inevitable under one roof. The team behind Maxie's and Blue's Egg runs this cozy Bluemound Road spot, where the warm wood interior and genuinely unhurried hospitality do as much work as the menu. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur semifinalist, the group has a long track record of comfort food that earns the label.

  33. A converted 1921 bungalow in Mount Dora's compact downtown, dressed up with coastal-eclectic touches and spread across several small dining rooms. The restaurant runs a rotating menu built around local, sustainable ingredients, so the kitchen has a reason to stay interested and so do you. Parker House rolls arrive housemade and fluffy, and the fried green tomatoes with Benton's bacon and tomatillo sauce have clearly become a fixture. A good reason to make the drive from Orlando.

  34. Tucked inside the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park, this casual museum restaurant takes the global-folk-art mandate and runs with it on the plate. The menu hops from rock shrimp gyoza to lamb kibbeh to Thai green curry without breaking a sweat, and the plant-based options feel like full commitments rather than checkboxes. A monthly dinner series works through a different world cuisine each time, which keeps the regulars guessing.

  35. Rank 4139. Aurum

    Contemporary Indian

A fried potato spiral dressed in tamarind and sweet yogurt sets the tone: this is contemporary Indian fine dining, but the chef would clearly rather you laughed than genuflected. The room in downtown Los Altos runs to bright walls and leather seats, and the menu pulls from forgotten regional recipes while sneaking in a dish literally called "I'm Not Pasta." Selected by the Michelin Guide, and a San Francisco Chronicle pick for South Asian dining in the Bay Area.

A sleek modern Greek restaurant on Winter Park's main drag, AVA runs a shared-plates menu rooted in the Cycladic islands, mezze to seafood mains to a baklava that arrives with pistachio orange blossom ice cream and makes a strong case for dessert. It's a bit of a scene, so the crowd dresses for it. Come as a duo or a group; the format rewards both, and the Michelin Guide has taken notice.

  37. A black rooster mural anchors the wall of this compact, industrial taqueria on Mills Avenue, where the chef built some of the furniture himself. The ethos is farm-to-taco, which sounds like a bumper sticker until you taste it. Slow-roasted pork, smoked greens with ricotta and shiitake, pickled onions that actually pucker: the menu reads eclectic and delivers on it. A Michelin Selected pick that draws vegetarians and carnivores into the same colorful booths.

  38. Rank 4139. Cafe Commerce

This is a neighborhood restaurant on the Upper East Side, warm and a little glamorous, where Harold Moore runs a contemporary American menu with French and Italian pulls. Steak Diane shares space with sweet potato tortellini carried over from the beloved original. The kind of place you book for a Tuesday because you deserve a Tuesday like this.

  39. Rank 4139. Cane Pazzo

    Wood-fired Italian

A wood-fired oven dominates the room of this Italian neighborhood bistro, tucked into a Hanahan strip mall between a Latin bakery and a grocery store. The chef's first solo venture draws a steady local pilgrimage from across greater Charleston for housemade pasta, focaccia, and wood-fired oysters on walnut tables. The meatballs have developed a following serious enough that regulars treat them as a standing order.

  40. Rank 4139. Fond

    Contemporary American Pizzeria

Fond sits across from Thanksgiving Square downtown and works two shifts: a daytime cafe with sandwiches, salads, and Detroit-style pizza, then a dinner menu of small plates, seasonal entrees, and a thoughtful wine list. The cooking is familiar food with a few unexpected moves. Eater put it on their essential Dallas list, and the soft serve, finished with olive oil and flaky salt, is the one thing everyone orders.

  41. A converted car dealership in Mission Hills that traded showroom gloss for a horseshoe bar and a live-fire kitchen. Fort Oak is an upscale steakhouse that leans hard into the flames, with a mid-century room bright enough to undercut any wood-smoke mystique. The menu is built for sharing, moving from raw seafood to grilled cuts, with the heritage pork chop making a strong case for the grill over the range. The apple crisp arrives in a cast-iron skillet, which feels earned rather than theatrical.

  42. Rank 4139. Guelaguetza

    Oaxacan

The website is ilovemole.com, which tells you everything about what this Oaxacan restaurant is here to do. The orange façade announces it from blocks away, and inside, the grill station fills the room with the smell of blistering peppers before you've even sat down. The moles, particularly the negro and rojo, are the reason regulars keep coming back. Complimentary chips arrive already drizzled with mole coloradito, so you're committed before you've ordered.

  43. Rank 4139. Hana re

    Sushi

Ten seats tucked into the back corner of a Costa Mesa shopping mall, which sounds like a punchline until you're actually sitting at the counter. Hana re runs a leisurely omakase that moves through composed dishes and delicate nigiri with the kind of unhurried calm that makes the parking lot outside feel very far away. The sake list gives you something to think about between courses.

  44. A restored Masonic Lodge in McKinney's historic square is an unusual home for a farm-to-table American restaurant, but the vaulted ceilings and warm multilevel space make the whole thing work. The kitchen sources tightly from local farms and ranchers, and live music fills the room most nights. An American wine list leans toward small producers. The Michelin Guide has it on their radar, as does Eater's list of essential Dallas restaurants.

  45. Rank 4139. Hen Mother Cookhouse

    Southern American

Sourdough waffles topped with fried chicken is the move at this cheerful Southern brunch spot in Johns Creek, where the farmhouse aesthetic (blue walls, white benches, wood tables) lands on the right side of kitschy. The menu runs breakfast and lunch, covering avocado toast and quiche before pivoting to BLTs and burgers by midday. Portions run generous, so the table tends to share. The Michelin Guide has it listed among their selected Atlanta restaurants.

  46. Rank 4139. il Gigante

    Italian

A small mug of grated parm arrives alongside the lasagna alla Bolognese for table-side sprinkling, which tells you everything about this cozy Italian neighborhood restaurant in Ridgewood. The menu is short and unfussy, running from cured meats and fried calamari through cacio e pepe and branzino, with daily specials filling the gaps. Exactly the kind of place you start bringing your kids, and then keep going back to long after they've moved out.

It's a full-service restaurant built for groups, with family-style spreads and a pho selection that draws regulars back regularly. 50. Distressed wood and exposed brick give this intimate Santa Ana sushi counter the feel of a tavern that took a sharp left turn into Japan. Chef Gino Choi runs an omakase where the mood is warm and unhurried, and the courses keep pace with his evident enthusiasm for the form. The Michelin Guide has it listed. Tucked into a quiet stretch of downtown, it draws the kind of crowd that drives past the freeway exits everyone else takes.

  51. Rank 4139. Papa Llama

    Peruvian

A Michelin-starred modern Peruvian restaurant operating out of a strip mall on Curry Ford Road, which is either charming or a little absurd depending on your relationship with prestige. The team behind it cooks family-style Peruvian classics with careful contemporary touches, and the open kitchen keeps things personal in a room that seats only a handful of tables. The natural wine list punches well above the zip code.

  52. Rank 4139. Pizza Bruno

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza shop tucked into a strip mall on Curry Ford Road, Pizza Bruno runs a wood-fired oven hot and a menu that takes genuine swings: one pie pairs fresh blueberries with mozzarella, fontina, honey, and bacon, and another makes the pineapple debate feel basically settled. The room is small and bright, with a neighborhood counter-service feel that keeps things casual while the pizza itself is doing something more ambitious.

  53. Rank 4139. Poor Hendrix

    Southern Pan-Asian

The menu changes daily at this neighborhood gastropub on the eastside, so the regulars check the specials before they sit down. Poor Hendrix is a corner spot that plays it loose: Southern technique meets Asian flavors, first-come seating, no fuss, no reservations. The back patio is the move in good weather, though the bar holds its own. A Michelin Selected pick that clearly didn't dress up for the occasion.

  54. A converted house on Pacific Coast Highway that now does serious work as a steakhouse, with enough rooms and terraces that you could visit four times and sit somewhere different each time. The kitchen leans into butter the way a steakhouse should, and the bar draws regulars who look comfortable enough to have their own tabs. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected restaurants for the region.

  55. The nam khao, a crispy rice salad built with fermented pork sausage, herbs, and peanuts, gives you a pretty clear idea of what Snackboxe Bistro is doing. This Duluth strip-mall spot serves Lao street food with Thai and Vietnamese overlap, and the portions run large enough that going solo is a genuine logistical problem. The chef's western Laos roots are the throughline, and the Michelin Guide has taken notice.

  56. Rank 4139. Star of India

    North Indian

Concrete floors and high ceilings give this family-run Northern Indian restaurant an unexpectedly loft-like feel, which pairs oddly well with the warm, sharing-style plates arriving at the table. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and the room fills with people ordering more dishes than they planned. Curries run across fish, chicken, and lamb, and the chili lamb masala earns its regulars. Come with a group and a flexible sense of how full you thought you were going to get.

  57. Rank 4139. Sushi Ii

    Sushi

An upstairs omakase spot above Pacific Coast Highway where the fish comes from Japan and the menu follows the seasons like it has somewhere to be. The kaiseki-style progression moves from delicate cold bites through sashimi and nigiri to dessert, each course composed with the kind of precision that makes you slow down mid-bite. Newport Beach casual this is not, but the room is chic without being stiff about it.

  58. Rank 4139. Thistle & Leek

    Gastropub

The wood-paneled room feels like a London gastropub that somehow ended up in Newton Center, which is exactly what the team was going for. Breads, pastas, and ice creams are all made in-house, and the menu shifts with the seasons rather than overstaying its welcome. A pint alongside roast chicken is the obvious move, but the kitchen goes further than it needs to for a neighborhood spot, which is why regulars keep coming back.

  59. The omakase counter is tucked behind a bookshelf wall inside a mini golf bar, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. Toshokan seats a handful of guests in a tiny soundproofed room for nigiri that leans playful, a spicy margarita riff on hamachi, wagyu evoking steak and eggs. It's a Michelin Guide selection that also happens to be the least self-serious omakase in Texas, possibly anywhere.

    Rustic Spanish

The banquettes are printed with jokes, which tells you something about the mood at this rustic Spanish tapas bar from chef Amar Santana. Sherries and Spanish wines run deep, the bar area is a good-looking place to park yourself, and the kitchen sends out croquetas, paellas, and little grilled sandwiches layered with jamón ibérico and Manchego. Two outdoor patios round out the options when the weather cooperates, which in Costa Mesa it usually does.

  61. Lasagna layered with soy-braised pork sits on the menu between Santa Barbara uni and wagyu kalbi, which tells you about everything you need to know about this Menlo Park fine dining spot. The duo behind it blend Korean and Taiwanese flavors in a shareable, à la carte format, the kind of meal where you order more than you planned and don't regret it. Dress up a little; this is a proper night out on the Peninsula.

    Modern Cantonese Seafood

The strip mall on Turkey Lake Road does nothing to prepare you for the room inside, which runs to chandeliers and private dining spaces with the full sweep of a Cantonese seafood clubhouse. Dim sum arrives made to order rather than off a cart, so everything lands hot. The selection runs deep, from siu mai and egg tarts to sticky pork dumplings with a crispy, mochi-soft interior. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, and the move is to come with a crowd and keep ordering.

  63. The cobblestoned streets of Fells Point lead you to this seafood restaurant and raw bar, where local oysters share the menu with a lobster roll on a warm, buttered bun. The vibe skews more New England than Chesapeake, though the orange crush keeps it honest. Waits are part of the deal, so ask about the back patio and let the neighborhood do its thing while you hold out.

    Keralan

Stainless-steel plates land on the table the way they would at someone's home in Kerala, which is exactly the point. Thattu is a Keralan restaurant in Chicago where fish fries, coconut curries, and yogurt rice anchor the menu, and the appam, lacy rice-and-coconut domes, exist mostly to drag through whatever's left. The Tater Tots dusted in chaat masala read less like a gimmick and more like a clever raid on the pantry.

  65. The neon sign out front has been pulling in Tribeca's night owls since the neighborhood was mostly parking lots. This brasserie wears its '80s bones proudly, all red banquettes and buzz, and Vanity Fair once called it "a movie set that doubles as a restaurant," which tracks. The French-ish menu runs burgers to croque monsieur, comfortingly unchanged. The New York Times gave it a star in 2016.

  66. A French patisserie in Tower Grove where the macarons rotate through flavors like a Beyoncé-inspired lemon curd and vanilla-tonka-bean number, and the triple chocolate croissant somehow stays flaky under all that glaze. The chef trained at the Ritz-Carlton and brings Creole roots into the mix, so the savory case can surprise you too. A James Beard Outstanding Bakery semifinalist, and the kind of neighborhood spot that fills up before the city has finished its coffee.

  67. Dozen Bakery is a counter-service bakery that quietly supplies half the coffee shops in Nashville, so you've probably eaten its pastries without knowing it. The Berry Hill spot has room for laptops and brunch dates, and the line is a permanent fixture that moves faster than it looks. Lemon bar croissants and chili-garlic focaccia are the sort of thing that makes someone say "oh, I know a guy" about a bakery.

  68. Rank 4173. Mis Raices Café

    Mexican Coffee Shop

The drinks here are built on Mexican dessert flavors, cajeta and horchata and mazapán, which makes the menu feel like someone raided a very good grandmother's kitchen. This Mexican coffee shop on Grand Avenue runs warm in every sense: conversations in Spanish and English spill across colorful tables, and the owner greets everyone like company she was expecting. A useful antidote to the laptop-and-Edison-bulb variety of café down the block.

  69. The line at this meat-and-three curves from the steam table through the dining room, and someone near you will almost certainly say some version of "this is how we ate coming up." Silver Sands has been a family operation for generations, with the current chef waking before dawn to start on saucy beef tips, stewed okra, fried whiting, and salmon croquettes that feel more ambitious than the room lets on. The New York Times named it among Nashville's 25 best.

  70. Otis Redding plays through the speakers without skipping, which tells you everything about how much thought went into this coffee shop. Bardo has been open since early morning and late into the night since it opened, with booths, couches, window seats, and a patio covering whatever mood you're in. The coffee is Kaladi Brothers, the baked goods are fresh, and the lighting never makes you feel like you're being interrogated.

  71. East and Gulf Coast oysters anchor the raw bar at this Knox Street seafood restaurant and oyster bar, where the menu runs from smoked whitefish dip and beef tartare through whole grilled branzino and chilled lobster rolls. The drinks are notably un-afterthought. A double cheeseburger quietly holds down the menu for anyone dragged in by a shellfish-obsessed friend, which is a gracious thing to offer.

  74. Regards is a brunchy, ever-changing restaurant on Congress Street in the Arts District, where the menu wanders between Japan, Mexico, and California while keeping its produce stubbornly local. 75. The crust on Z&Z's za'atar manoushe is chewy through the middle and genuinely crisp all the way to the edge, which sounds simple until you're eating it. This four-table Levantine flatbread bakery in Rockville operates something like a pizzeria, with variations on the signature item boxed up to go. The New York Times named it among D.C.'s top restaurants, and Bon Appétit put it on its best new restaurants list.

Fried green plantains stuffed with cheese and paired with a sharply herbed aji criollo set the tone at this cheerful Ecuadorian and Andean neighborhood restaurant on Central Avenue. The kitchen runs seven days a week, which is convenient when you need a proper seco de pollo on a Tuesday. An old-school institution in the best sense, the kind of place where the regulars have strong opinions about the brunch menu and are not shy about sharing them.

  81. A sprawling Mexican market and restaurant that has been an old-school institution on Cesar Chavez Street, El Burrito Mercado runs a full deli and bakery alongside a proper sit-down kitchen. The family has been at it for generations, and the mole con pollo and birria tacos carry that kind of quiet confidence. The bakery cases alone, stacked with barbacoa and fresh conchas, make it hard to leave without your arms full.

  82. This is a Cantonese dim sum hall out on Division, with a banquet-room floor plan and carts that never seem to stop circling. Come daytime for congee and shrimp rolls the color of a sunset, or after dark for whole crab fried with ginger and scallion. The parking lot is always packed, and a great uncle seems to be permanently posted outside. Tables turn slowly, which tells you everyone has settled in.

  83. The dining room sits inside a former brewery boiler room, and the living green wall that covers one end of it is a genuine conversation-stopper. Gunther & Co. is a modern New American restaurant in Brewers Hill where globally influenced cooking, think Thai-leaning hot pots alongside locally dry-aged burgers, lands at prices that don't require a second mortgage. The duck confit spring rolls have been on the menu since day one, which tells you something.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
