  29. Swan Lake has actual swans, and the terrace wraps around it at the kind of angle that makes dinner feel like a film set. This is a hotel dining room, but one where the garden earns its keep, not just its Instagram. The Mediterranean menu leans into good produce and clean flavors, from tuna tartare with ponzu to Colorado lamb, and the patisserie cart has a way of extending the evening longer than planned.

  30. Silk curtains, monogrammed seatbacks, and a glassed-in conservatory make the name almost a prank, but The Sardine Factory is a white-tablecloth seafood institution that has been doing fine dining since before fine dining needed to be ironic about it. The menu runs from crispy sand dabs to lobster ravioli in cream sauce, the bread basket is generous, and the staff treats the whole production with genuine ceremony. Bring a relative who remembers when this was the move.

  44. The lobby never quite decides if it's a hotel or a party, which is exactly the point. Ace Hotel New York anchors NoMad with a ground floor that shifts from laptop-open co-working in the afternoon to a full DJ set by midnight, all without anyone changing rooms. The rooms upstairs are what you'd expect from the chain that made "hip hotel" a genre: raw edges, good sound systems, and guests who pack light.

  45. Full-length windows do a lot of heavy lifting at this NoMad hotel, where the rooms are compact by any honest measure but bright enough that you stop noticing. Arlo has figured out that good light and a smart layout can substitute for square footage, which matters when the alternative is paying Manhattan prices for a room that feels like a sensory deprivation tank. A solid, unpretentious option in a neighborhood that keeps improving.

  50. A hotel in NoMad that resisted the obvious mid-century modern temptation and landed somewhere more current: hardwood floors, live plants, barn-style room dividers, and contemporary art that earns its wall space. The rooftop Pool Club is the kind of amenity that actually changes your afternoon plans. The Michelin Guide selects it, and the location puts most of Manhattan within easy reach without much effort.

  51. Rank 2455. Atoboy

    Korean

The room is minimal to the point of industrial, which keeps the focus where it belongs: Korean cooking that doesn't explain itself to anyone. This Gramercy fine dining spot runs a prix-fixe-style menu where the combinations are adventurous but never alienating, the sort of place where kimchi beurre blanc makes complete sense by the second bite. Regulars book well ahead, and the team's warmth closes the gap between the spare room and a very full table.

  52. Rank 2456. Bettina

    Wood-fired Pizzeria

Wood-fired pizza from a pair who met slinging pies at Roberta's in New York, now settled into a bright spot in the Montecito Country Mart. Bettina is a pizzeria with a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a slow-fermented dough that shows up in every crust. Pastas get the same attention, and the oven moonlights in baked goods, so leaving without a brown-butter chocolate chip cookie is the kind of mistake you only make once.

  53. Rank 2456. Nixtaco

    Mexican

A strip-mall taqueria in Roseville with a salsa bar serious enough to slow you down before you even order. The nixtamalized tortillas are made in-house, warm and pliable, and the fillings run from shrimp with serrano and lime to a short rib barbacoa topped with avocado and black sesame. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the Los Angeles Times put it on its California 101 list, both of which the parking lot does nothing to suggest.

  54. Rank 2456. Sama Sama Kitchen

    Southeast Asian

A Nashville barbecue devotee and an Indonesian-born chef walk into a Santa Barbara kitchen, and the result is a Southeast Asian restaurant that a Michelin Bib Gourmand and the LA Times both noticed. The menu moves between green papaya salad, steamed or fried bao, and dishes that land somewhere between comfort food and serious cooking. The back patio with string lights is where you want to be.

  55. A grand staircase leads you from the ground-floor bar up to a high-ceilinged dining room of globe lights, gold accents, and big windows that have clearly been briefed on the assignment. Inside Raffles Boston, La Padrona is an opulent, high-energy Italian restaurant where the pastas are made in-house and the plates are sized for sharing. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list, and the chef is a James Beard Northeast semifinalist.

  56. White sand and Gulf water right outside the door set the tone at this sprawling beachside resort. The Ritz-Carlton, Naples has been around forever, and a recent top-to-bottom renovation brought new cabanas, poolside bungalows, and a massive Club Lounge that the brand calls its largest. The spa got a refresh too. A Forbes Four Star property, it draws the kind of guests who prefer their beach days with a butler nearby.

  57. Rank 2461. Horn Barbecue

    West Coast Barbecue

A mural of an angry steer watches over the counter at this Oakland BBQ shop, and the vibe tracks: the pits here are serious. Matt Horn calls it West Coast Barbecue, which means brisket, pulled pork, and sausages on butcher paper with sides like pit beans and Granny's potatoes. Lines form early and stay long. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and it landed a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant.

  58. Rank 2462. Annam

    Contemporary Vietnamese

The dining room at this contemporary Vietnamese restaurant in Autry Park runs in cream and white, with booths wide enough to actually spread out. The menu threads French technique through Vietnamese cooking, and the portions are generous enough to make sharing feel less like a virtue and more like a strategy. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks with the pricing. Bring people you like.

  59. Rank 2462. The Paper Bridge

    Northern Vietnamese

The menu at this Northern Vietnamese restaurant annotates each dish with culinary and cultural history, so you'll know why the Dungeness crab spring rolls arrive in the square shape customary to Haiphong. The team makes their own rice noodles, a laborious thing few bother with, for a deep roster of phos and noodle plates. Bring a group so the grilled half-duck makes sense. The New York Times put it on their 2025 Restaurant List.

  60. Rank 2464. Chengdu Taste

    Full-Throttle Sichuan

Chengdu Taste does not negotiate with your spice tolerance. This Alhambra Sichuan restaurant has been packing in crowds for years without once softening its approach, and the dining room smells like chili oil and vindication. Toothpick lamb, heavy with cumin, is the move that everyone talks about. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record here, and lunch is the local's trick for skipping the line that forms most evenings.

  61. The dining room looks straight out over the water at Newport Beach, which would be enough for most restaurants to coast on. This modern New American spot holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it by pairing that view with a menu that swings from inventive vegetable dishes to an ambitious slow-roasted porchetta. The crowd comes for the scenery and stays because the food keeps surprising them.

  62. Karen Akunowicz's Italian restaurant in South Boston earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the kind of pasta that makes you quietly resent every other pasta you've ever eaten. The long bar up front fills fast, banquettes stretch back for the slower evening, and focaccia stuffed with taleggio lands before you've figured out what else to order. The room runs from parents with kids to couples just starting their night, which somehow all works.

    Regional Mexican

Table-shaken margaritas set the tone at Rick Bayless's long-running regional Mexican restaurant on Clark Street, where the menu rotates around whatever's local and the molé gets the kind of attention most kitchens reserve for special occasions. The room runs warm and loud in the best sense, with music that makes the wait feel shorter than it is. 64. Pakistani-Indian restaurant on a Fullerton strip that otherwise runs to taquerias and carnicerias, which tells you something about how much confidence it takes to open here. The room is bright and a little hip, with a craft mocktail bar in the back. Beef is quietly central to the menu, though chicken and vegetable dishes hold their own. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on Eater's list of essential Orange County restaurants.

  65. The garage doors roll up when the weather cooperates, which in Charleston is often enough to matter. This seafood spot, a converted filling station on King Street, holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it with small, smart moves: fried saltine crackers alongside the smoked mahi dip, shrimp rolls garnished with crushed potato chips. The grower Champagne list is an unexpected flex for a place this casual. The fried chicken, brined in buttermilk and hit with Old Bay, tends to cause a scene.

  66. A complimentary splash of bubbles lands on your table the moment you sit down, which sets the tone nicely for a Montrose pizza and pasta spot that's got more going on than it lets on. 67. Rank 2464. Smokemade Meats + Eats

    Central Texas Barbecue

The menu is written on butcher paper, the floors are concrete, and the white bread is made in-house and served alongside your tray, which is how Central Texas does it. This no-frills BBQ shop off Curry Ford Road holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the kind of smoke-forward brisket and pork ribs that don't need explanation. The jalapeño-cheddar sausage and collard greens with garlic are the sides people come back to argue about.

  68. Rank 2464. Strand

    Southern

The menu is posted on the front windows of this Art Deco corner spot, which is either a charming invitation or a warning that space inside is tight. Either way, mint-green walls and Mason-jar lights above a glossy tile bar make the room feel worth the squeeze. Southern-inflected seasonal cooking, a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a wine list that actually holds its own round out a neighborhood restaurant that punches well above its square footage.

  70. The laziji arrives as a vivid tangle of dried chilies with well-seasoned chicken and peanuts hiding somewhere inside, which tells you everything about the kitchen's approach at this Sichuan restaurant on West Colonial. 71. Rank 2464. The Ravenous Pig

    Modern Southern

Frosted glass panels half-obscure the open kitchen, which is either atmospheric or a tease, depending on how curious you are about what's happening back there. This moody, industrial gastropub in Winter Park earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for modern Southern cooking that treats pub classics as a starting point rather than a ceiling. The menu leans into charcoal, smoke, and pickle in ways that feel considered without feeling fussy.

  72. The seafoam-green booths say classic American diner; the kale nachos say something else is going on. This Shaw spot runs on familiar comfort food remixed just enough to keep things interesting, from meatloaf with sriracha and morel gravy to cauliflower with tahini and fried chickpeas. Brunch draws a crowd for egg dishes and sandwiches, and the lemon meringue pie is not optional. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and you'll want a reservation.

    Modern Vietnamese

By day it's a reliable phở spot on a Quincy corner; when five o'clock hits, the lights drop, the '90s hip-hop comes up, and the room becomes something else entirely. This gastropub explores what happens when Modern Vietnamese cooking meets New England, which turns out to mean lemongrass-chile French onion dip and Viet-Cajun crawfish noodles. Imperial Manchu

The strip-mall facade on Las Tunas gives nothing away, but inside, the room goes full imperial, red and gold and blue, with the kind of scale that makes you feel a dinner party is the minimum viable unit. 75. Rank 2479. Apolonia

    Contemporary Mediterranean

Apolonia is a hotel restaurant in the South Loop with the calm, spare look of a place that doesn't need to shout, and a Euro-Mediterranean menu with white-tablecloth ambitions. The handmade pastas are the main event, and a truffle puff bread arrives at the table with enough theater to turn heads two booths over. Its sommelier took home a Banchet, so the wine list probably isn't an afterthought. Dress like you've been somewhere.

  76. A coral-hued Mediterranean landmark on Royal Palm Way that sat empty for nearly two decades before reopening as Palm House, a boutique luxury hotel with a Michelin Key. The sixties-inspired rooms lean cheerful rather than stuffy, with Juliet balconies and marble soaking tubs, while the suites go full Art Deco curves. The Palm Bar's pink Murano glass chandeliers do a lot of work, and the pool deck with its palm-framed courtyard suggests Palm Beach at exactly its most Palm Beach.

    The awards

  77. Floor-to-ceiling smart windows that use AI to regulate room temperature set the tone at this 17-story, two-tower hotel in Lake Nona, a tech-forward community about ten minutes from Orlando International. The architecture actually waves, which is either charming or on the nose depending on your mood. A sculpture garden, art collection, and a vivid pool area fill the grounds. It holds a Michelin Key.

  78. The interior runs like a train car, wood-paneled and faintly sweet with incense, and the menu is long enough to require a strategy. This cozy Elmhurst Thai restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed on the New York Times 100 Best list, which helps explain why the room fills fast. Curries, stir-fries, salads, and fried rice cover the bases, but the crispy catfish with mango salad is the kind of dish that makes the rest of the menu feel like a warm-up.

  79. The grounds are landscaped to echo Monet's Water Lilies, which sets the tone: this Forbes Four Star inn near Plymouth leans hard into French countryside fantasy, turrets and all, less than an hour from Boston. Fifty rooms, attentive staff, and a 14,000-square-foot spa with a heated foot pool, an Aqua Terrace with waterfall and fireplace, and a full fitness calendar. The spa is the real draw, and most guests seem to know it before they even unpack.

  80. All-suite lodging on a sprawling Upstate New York resort campus, The Lodge at Turning Stone keeps its 95 rooms on the quieter end of a property that also contains a casino, three championship golf courses, and two spas. The smallest suite runs 550 square feet, so the space feels deliberate rather than accidental. Forbes Four Star. Guests who want the full resort circus can find it; guests who don't can mostly avoid it.

  81. A botanical art installation behind the front desk and water features throughout the lobby signal that this casino resort in the San Bernardino foothills is trying to be something calmer than the 6,500 slot machines on the floor below might suggest. The 432-room tower earns a Forbes Four Star rating, with a wellness spa, poolside cabanas, and a full spread of dining options. Highland is 70 minutes from L.A., which is part of the pitch.

  82. Rank 2486. Mott St.

    Midwest Pan-Asian

Edward Kim's Bucktown restaurant plays Midwest and Chinese off each other in ways that feel neither forced nor fussy. It's a casual, feast-style spot where the menu roams freely and the cooking has enough personality to pull it off. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place where the food is ambitious but the vibe stays loose. Go with a group and order widely.

  83. The doorman in a ten-gallon hat sets the tone at this ski-in, ski-out resort at the base of Beaver Creek. Timber and stone outside nod to the national park lodge tradition, while inside the rooms run to leather chairs, dark wood, and beamed ceilings. The mountain-family itinerary is generous: fly fishing, an outdoor pool, golf, and slopes right out the door for anyone who came for the obvious reason.

  84. A 32-story tower on the white-sand stretch of Sunny Isles, this full-service beach resort sits just north of Bal Harbour and leans into the full Florida fantasy. Rooms come with wet bars and mini-fridges, the Aquanox Spa runs 8,000 square feet, and the water toys on offer run from kayaks to jet skis. The crowd arrives with sunscreen and ambition, in roughly equal measure.

  85. Corn is ground on-site, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen takes its tortillas before you've ordered a single taco. Molino Chido is a casual Mexican spot in Aurora where the folding chairs and cement floors make no pretense, but the team behind it comes from serious restaurant kitchens. The menu runs from straightforward carnitas to bison tongue, and a counter tasting menu exists for anyone who wants the full ride.

  86. The sweet corn bibingka is topped with what looks like white chocolate but turns out to be Cheddar, which tells you everything about how this all-day cafe operates. Mornings run on Asian-American pastries and a line out the door; evenings pivot to Japanese-inflected yōshoku cooking. The team earned a James Beard nomination for Outstanding Pastry Chef and a nod from Bon Appétit's best new restaurants list, and the Cincinnati chili ramen has developed its own local mythology.

  87. Checkered tablecloths and red-sauce ambition fill this cozy Italian-American fine dining spot in River North, where the Hogsalt group went full throwback and meant it. Pastas are made in-house, portions are unapologetically generous, and the tiramisu is heavier on the booze than most places would dare. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room this loud with this much garlic in the air.

    Modern Vietnamese

A soft scrambled egg with brown butter, fish sauce, and trout roe landed on the New York Times list of the best dishes eaten across the country in 2024, which tells you something about the ambitions of this modern Vietnamese restaurant on East Colfax. Mint, chiles, and ginger run through dishes that borrow from traditional preparations without recreating them. A James Beard semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, with tables that still require some planning to secure.

  89. Rank 2493. Vecino

    Modern Mexican

The masa section of the menu says a lot about a modern Mexican restaurant: handmade enchiladas, tostadas, tetelas, each one built with the care of someone who grew up arguing about corn. Vecino sits in Midtown with a warm, spare interior and a menu that pulls from Mexico City and Oaxaca without apology. Esquire named it one of America's best new restaurants in 2024, and it landed a James Beard semifinalist nod the following year.

  91. Wood smoke hits you on Van Brunt Street before the warehouse comes into view, which is a useful heads-up to adjust your plans for the rest of the day. This Red Hook BBQ shop runs counter service out of a sprawling industrial space with communal tables, where the brisket has the smoke ring to back up the reputation. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record, and the banana pudding tends to disappear fast.

  92. Rank 2496. Tacos Chiwas

    Chihuahua-style Taqueria

Chihuahua-style street food is the whole point here, counter-service and no-frills, with a menu tight enough that everything on it earns its spot. The gorditas have won over Phoenix two years running, and the tacos, barbacoa through lengua, hold up across multiple locations without the usual chain drift. A James Beard semifinalist, which for a fast-casual taco spot is its own kind of statement. Patio seating available if the line moves fast enough.

  93. Rank 2497. Mariscos San Pedro

    Mexican Seafood

Mariscos San Pedro is a lively Pilsen seafood restaurant on the ground floor of Thalia Hall, doing Mexican mariscos with more imagination than the genre usually gets. The dining rooms are all colorful tile and cartoonish illustrations, and the bar handles anyone killing time before a show upstairs. It's a sit-down dinner, mid-priced, and the Eater-crowned shrimp gobernador taco is the one people mention.

  95. A neon sign reading "Good Vibes Only" hangs on the living green wall, which tells you something about the room and something about yourself for liking it anyway. This swanky sushi bar on East Colonial does Japanese with Pan-Asian riffs, and the marble bar stays busy most nights. The omakase is where the kitchen gets interesting. A James Beard nominee two years running, and a Michelin Selected pick.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
