The Top 100 Places to Eat Near Shmoné
-
Rank 1. Shmoné
Neo-Levantine Mediterranean
The Jerusalem bagel arrives piping hot with olive oil and holds its own in a city that takes bagels personally. That confidence runs through everything at Eyal Shani's neo-Levantine restaurant in Greenwich Village, a one-Michelin-star spot where the compact room fills before the door swings open. Vegetables, seasonality, and sharing drive the menu, but the bone-in short rib tends to settle any debate about whether you needed meat.
-
A speakeasy entrance in Greenwich Village opens onto a chef's counter tasting menu that pulls from South America, Asia, and wherever else the kitchen feels like going that night. The room is intimate and design-forward, and the team works in full view, which turns dinner into something closer to a performance. It holds a Michelin star. The aged Comté paired with honey ice cream has apparently become the dessert regulars mention unprompted on the way out.

Rank 3. Semma
Indian
The gunpowder dosa lands on every table for a reason: it's a crispy rice-and-lentil crepe packed with spicy potato masala, and it arrives with the quiet confidence of a dish that has nothing to prove. This south Indian restaurant in the West Village holds a Michelin star and a James Beard Award, and the kitchen earns both by ignoring what American diners supposedly expect. The wood-paneled room is small and loud in the best way, and reservations go fast.

New American
Dan Barber's Greenwich Village dining room runs a single fixed menu, served family-style, that arrives at the table with almost no interference from the kitchen. Vegetables from Blue Hill at Stone Barns upstate carry most of the meal, with grains and proteins woven in to support rather than star. It holds a Michelin star, and the room has the kind of quiet confidence that comes from a team that has stopped needing to prove anything.

Italian
Bare wood farm tables, whitewashed brick, and a risotto cacio e pepe that regulars will happily order twice: Via Carota is a West Village Italian restaurant where the room feels like a farmhouse and the cooking feels like someone's very talented relative took over the kitchen. Reservations go fast, so plan ahead. The James Beard Awards named it an Outstanding Restaurant Semifinalist, and the lines outside suggest most of the neighborhood agrees.

Ten seats at a sleek counter on a cobblestoned West Village street, and the whole meal is in the chef's hands. Daisuke Nakazawa's omakase moves through a parade of nigiri, each piece built from deeply seasoned rice, a touch of wasabi, and a careful brush of nikiri. The fish skews fatty and tender in ways that tend to make regulars go quiet. One Michelin star, and a price point slightly more forgiving than the city's other serious sushi rooms.
-
Rank 9. Eleven Madison Park
Plant-based New American
Daniel Humm's tasting menu restaurant occupies a grand Art Deco dining room on Madison Square Park, where everything from the staff's suits to the water vases is custom made. The kitchen went plant-based a few years back, which caused a minor citywide meltdown, and the menu has been quietly winning people over since. Three Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond.
-
Rank 10. César
Seafood
A former printing house in SoHo now holds one of the more decorated new tasting menus in the country: two Michelin stars and a spot on the World's 50 Best, all within its first year. César Ramirez builds a 13-course seafood-focused menu from a lifetime of detours, Mexico, Chicago, French kitchens, and long stretches in Japan, with sauces precise enough to settle any argument. The room is spare and the counter seats face the kitchen, which is exactly the point.
-
Rank 11. Penny
Seafood
Two marble counters run the length of the kitchen, fronted by mounds of ice holding oysters, clams, and Champagne in roughly equal proportion. Penny is an all-bar seafood restaurant above Claud in the East Village, and the whole point is watching things get shucked, sliced, and dressed in front of you. It landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list. Most seats are walk-in, so arrive before doors open if you'd like one.

Rank 12. Gramercy Tavern
Contemporary New American
The room divides in two: a buzzy front Tavern with bar seats and an à la carte menu, and a quieter Dining Room behind it running a prix-fixe. Both are fine dining by any sane measure, just at different volumes. The seasonal contemporary American menu leans on local produce with French technique behind it. Gramercy holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Danny Meyer's flagship, been around forever, and still the restaurant half of New York uses to impress the other half.
-
Rank 13. KOSAKA
Omakase Sushi
Twelve seats at a spare counter in the West Village, soft piano overhead, and a Michelin-starred omakase where the chef sets his own pace rather than marching the whole room through each course in lockstep. The fish arrives minimally dressed, though small surprises hide underneath, a shiso leaf beneath seabass, a dot of yuzu koshō below kinmedai. The room is calm enough that you actually notice them.
-
Rank 14. COTE
Korean
Cuts of USDA Prime, American Wagyu, and Japanese A5 hang in a visible aging room before they ever reach the grill built into your table. This is a Korean barbecue steakhouse in the Flatiron, dark and moody in the way that only feels intentional when the service is this precise. Staff do the grilling, which sounds like a gimmick until it isn't. Holds a Michelin star and ranks among the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants. The wine list is quietly serious about value.

Caribbean
Paul Carmichael grew up in Barbados, and Kabawa is his argument that Caribbean cooking belongs in any room it wants. A prix-fixe fine dining restaurant on Extra Place, it seats you at a horseshoe counter in a dark green room with mosaic tilework and a playlist sourced partly from Carmichael's cousin back home. The New York Times named it the top restaurant in New York City, and the cocktail bar next door is his too, for nights when the goat patty feels like the right move.

Rank 16. Crevette
Spanish-French Seafood
White tablecloths and cream walls give Crevette the look of a classic European brasserie, but the cooking runs along the coasts of Spain and France with enough color to make you forget Manhattan is outside. This is a proper seafood restaurant, lively and full, with the bar pulling its own crowd. The team behind Lord's and Dame keeps the room humming and the martini list pointed.
-
Rank 17. Rezdôra
Emilia-Romagna Italian
Handmade pasta is the whole point at this Flatiron Italian, and the kitchen makes the case with tortellini, tagliatelle, and gnocco fritto the way the region actually does it. The cooking stays close to Emilia-Romagna, which means rich, precise, and not particularly interested in impressing you with novelty. A Michelin star and a spot on the 50 Top Italy list for the world's best Italian restaurants suggest the restraint is working.

Italian
Vaulted ceilings, aquamarine velvet booths, and waiters in dinner jackets set the stage at this Michelin-starred Italian restaurant inside the landmark Puck Building. The menu reads like a love letter to every New York neighborhood at once: deli pickles, Jamaican beef ragu, Cantonese lobster, all cooked with enough precision that none of it feels like a bit. Meals end with miniature Italian ices that lean deliberately sweet. Tables go fast and walk-ins compete for bar seats.

French-inflected New American
A few steps below street level on East Tenth, this French-inflected New American restaurant runs on shared plates and an open kitchen that keeps the room honest. The cooking touches the familiar at a slant: grilled cabbage, tempura squash blossoms, and a six-layer chocolate cake soaked in vermouth and evaporated milk that nominally serves two. The New York Times placed it fifteenth on its list of the city's hundred best. Reservations are a project, but the bar absorbs the overflow gracefully.

The hand-washing station at the entrance stocks Loewe soap, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Korean fried chicken restaurant. Club music bounces off vaulted ceilings while you work through a bucket of gluten-free fried chicken with consommé, banchan, and frozen yogurt soft serve to finish. Champagne is the obvious pairing, and caviar-topped nuggets are available for anyone who finds the baseline insufficiently absurd. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Rank 21. Raf's
Modern French
The house-made bread arrives before you've settled in, and that sets the tone. Raf's is a modern French bistro on Elizabeth Street with enough Italian soul to keep things interesting, the kind of room that feels like it's been around forever even when it hasn't. Pastry Chef Camari Mick is a James Beard semifinalist, and the desserts make that plausible. Walk-ins can usually find a spot at the bar, which is honestly not a bad outcome.

The team behind Dame brought the same easy warmth here: cozy banquettes, unhurried service, and bar stools held for walk-ins even on a packed night. The menu leans into hearty English classics with just enough creative wobble to stay interesting. Food & Wine named the chef a Best New Chef in 2023, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed.

Sushi
The hinoki counter was milled from a tree that predates the American Revolution, which sets the tone immediately. Yoshino on the Bowery is a traditional omakase counter from chef Tadashi Yoshida, who left a celebrated restaurant in Japan to open here, and holds a Michelin star. The meal moves through composed cooked courses before settling into Edomae nigiri, with a torched mackerel that arrives over a handheld charcoal grill like a small piece of theater.

Sleek glass doors open onto a room that feels like it's been broken in nicely, with Danish chairs, warm wood, and a bar you'd actually want to sit at. The Musket Room is a fine dining spot on Elizabeth Street where Mary Attea runs a seasonal menu that shifts often enough to keep regulars guessing. Modern New American
Ignacio Mattos built this downtown bistro on shareable plates that pair ingredients in ways that seem obvious only after you've eaten them. The room on Houston stays lively without tipping into loud, and the wine list rewards a little conversation with whoever's pouring. A Michelin star and a perennial spot on the Times' best-of list haven't made it precious. The crowd dresses like it might have somewhere better to be, then stays for another round.

Seafood
A quaint seafood restaurant on MacDougal where the wine list is sorted by whether you'd rather be James Bond or Austin Powers, and that tracks with everything else here. The fish and chips, a hake fillet in lacey batter, is what put the place on the map when it was still a pop-up. The menu turns with the season, the room is small and blue-and-white, and getting a table requires actual planning.
-
Rank 28. Oiji Mi
Modern Korean
A five-course prix fixe of modern Korean cooking in a sleek Flatiron room where the staff outnumbers the guests by a comfortable margin. The chef takes a restrained approach to bold flavors, which sounds like a contradiction until you're eating it. The cocktail program is sharp enough to earn its own following. Kaiseki Japanese
A hidden counter behind the cocktail bar up front, Odo offers an intimate kaiseki tasting menu where the mood is calm and the cooking is anything but ceremonial. Chef Hiroki Odo threads traditional Japanese structure through a personal lens, and two Michelin stars confirm the kitchen is paying attention. The room is quiet by design, so the food does the talking, and it has a lot to say.
-
Rank 30. Casa Mono
Spanish
The kitchen butchers whole animals in-house, which tells you something about how seriously this compact Spanish tapas bar on Irving Place takes its sourcing. Dishes arrive in a sensible order, not all at once, and they're sized to actually eat rather than admire. A Michelin star and a New York Times top-100 nod haven't made it precious. Order widely, resist keeping track, and plan to wish everything were slightly larger.
-
Rank 31. Carbone
American Italian
The servers at this Italian-American red-sauce institution work the room in tuxedos, and they know it. Plush banquettes, glittering chandeliers, and mid-century classics on the menu make Carbone feel like a fever dream of 1960s New York that never cooled down. The rigatoni alla vodka is famous for a reason, the prices are serious, and getting a reservation requires planning well in advance.
-
Rank 32. John's of Bleecker Street
Coal-Oven Pizza
The booths at this coal-oven pizza parlor are so carved up with initials and signatures that the wood itself is basically a guestbook for the last several decades of Greenwich Village. Whole pies only, thin-crusted and charred just right, no slices and no exceptions. The room is loud, cheerful, and not trying to impress anyone, which is precisely why it has been full since before most of its customers were born.

Two Michelin stars, a James Beard Award, and a spot at number twelve on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list suggest they do.
-
Rank 34. Jeju Noodle Bar
Korean Noodles
A counter seat at this intimate Korean noodle bar puts you close enough to watch the pork bone broth hit the bowl, which is half the point. The menu is short and the prices are low for a Michelin-starred kitchen in the West Village. Gochu ramyun is the draw, but the kitchen moves between broth, salad, and rice with enough range that nothing feels like an afterthought.
-
Rank 35. Noz 17
Omakase Sushi
A seven-seat cypress counter in Chelsea is about as intimate as omakase gets, and Noz 17 leans into that. The Michelin-starred sibling to the Upper East Side original sends out a refined nigiri sequence where the fish does the talking and the rice backs it up perfectly. Andrew Tarlow, the restaurateur who more or less invented the Brooklyn communal-table aesthetic, runs his only Manhattan outpost here on East 27th. The neighborhood trattoria seats you at long tables with a daily menu scrawled on butcher paper, and the food leans into the gamy, the bitter, and the slow-cooked, the things that take patience to understand. The whole thing costs $36, lunch is $19, and a coffee from the machine by the door is on the house on the way out. It's modeled on Korea's taxi driver restaurants, which is exactly the energy.

Rank 70. Abraço
Coffee
The cured olive cookie has been living rent-free in regulars' heads for years, which tells you something about this East Village espresso bar. Abraço roasts its own, keeps laptops out, and occasionally pivots to cocktails for evening music events, which is either a flex or just very New York. The room fills fast on weekends, the bites are small and creative, and the whole operation runs with a neighborhood-institution energy that's genuinely hard to fake.

Rank 71. L’abeille
French
Velvet booths, Christofle cutlery, and a marble bar set the tone at this French tasting menu restaurant on a coveted TriBeCa corner. The chef spent years in Joël Robuchon kitchens, and the cooking shows it: classical French technique pulled toward Japanese sensibility, refined without the stiffness that usually tags along. Servers in fitted suits orbit the room with something close to telepathy. One Michelin star.

Vegetarian
Amanda Cohen has been making vegetables the whole point since before that was a thing anyone said, and her Lower East Side tasting menu is where that conviction lands hardest. One menu, no substitutions, seasonal produce pushed through pickling, raw preparations, and desserts that can't quite decide if they're sweet. A Michelin star and a James Beard nomination confirm the kitchen's seriousness, even when the food is having fun.

A two-Michelin-starred, AAA Five Diamond counter in Tribeca where the kitchen runs in near silence while the playlist does the opposite. Chef Ronny Emborg sends out a long procession of tasting courses that manage to feel delicate and rich at the same time, a trick harder than it looks. The counter itself is unusually generous for this format, so the immersive part doesn't mean elbowing a stranger all night.

Thai
A two-story Thai restaurant near Union Square that comes with a long bar, a full house most nights, and the kind of noise level that makes the food taste better. The menu covers a broad stretch of Thai cooking, classical and contemporary, with enough chili heat to remind you where you are. A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick that draws a crowd happy to wait for it.

Indian
Newsprint wallpaper lines the hallway at this perpetually packed East Village Indian canteen, which relocated from Queens and came back louder. The kitchen runs on fierce seasoning and ornate presentations, often arriving in Le Creuset Dutch ovens that make the table feel like a small occasion. Order rice, order the crispy parathas, and plan to use them both. A Michelin Selected restaurant with a loyal following that doesn't really need to be told to come back.

Rank 81. Raoul's
French
Raoul's has been on Prince Street since before SoHo had a real estate pitch, and the art-crammed walls still feel like a bohemian time capsule in the best possible, no wait, a very specific way: the kind of French bistro where regulars order without looking up and the tableside hot fudge on profiteroles arrives like a point being made. The cooking is French American, the vibe is lived-in, and the cocktails arrive before the nostalgia sets in.

Rank 83. King
Mediterranean
The menu changes daily and fits on a single card, which tells you most of what you need to know about King. This SoHo neighborhood restaurant runs a short Mediterranean lineup built around whatever looks good at the greenmarket, with a bar up front that fills early and an intimate back room hung with bright art. The team met at London's River Café, and that unhurried confidence shows in food that makes simplicity seem like a deliberate flex.

Rank 84. Osteria 57
Seafood Italian
A seafood osteria on Sixth Avenue that also happens to be a caffè, bakery, pasta lab, and gelateria, which could easily be a mess but somehow feels like a well-run corner of northern Italy. The kitchen leans on pristine fish and vegetables, with a nod toward Japanese technique that earns its place rather than announcing itself. Raw preparations are a reason to linger, and the wine list keeps markups reasonable. Ranked 34th on 50 Top Italy's list of Italian restaurants worldwide.

Rank 85. Nami Nori
Sushi
Temaki, or hand rolls, are the whole point here, served open-style and passed directly from the crew to the counter while the nori is still crisp. The room is all blonde wood and gray-blue cushions, casual and unhurried in a way that West Village sushi rarely bothers to be. The plant-based options get the same care as the fish. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, for whatever that tells you about the price-to-pleasure math.

Rank 86. Crane Club
Steakhouse
Scarlet curtains climbing toward the ceiling set the scene at this Tao Group steakhouse in Chelsea, where the room commits fully to the bit. Melissa Rodriguez runs the kitchen, and the custom grill sears cuts edge to edge while a long roster of vegetable sides keeps things honest. The desserts punch well above the steakhouse average. A thoughtful wine list and servers who actually know how to pace a table round out the package.

Rank 87. Kanyakumari
Indian
A bar anchors the narrow room at this buzzy south Indian restaurant named for the city at the tip of the subcontinent, which tells you where the kitchen's loyalties lie: seafood, regional spice, and coastal flavors that don't pull punches. The slow-cooked beef short rib, draped in Madras onion rings and crispy curry leaves, has become something people keep coming back to mention. The Michelin Guide has it selected.

Rank 88. Junoon
Indian
Pendant lights strung with thick grass ropes and a gleaming marble bar signal that this is a fine dining Indian restaurant with a point of view, not just a curry house in a jacket. The kitchen has a taste for unexpected combinations and sharp presentation, with the menu moving across regions rather than playing it safe. Flatiron regulars who know to book ahead fill tables that have been sought-after for years.

Thomas Chen's East Village fine dining room sits behind bay windows with a backlit bar and purple seats that somehow avoid feeling precious. The menu moves between Asian traditions and classical technique in ways that feel considered rather than calculated, and the Michelin-starred kitchen earns its star without announcing it at every turn. Service knows the food cold but doesn't lecture. A neighborhood room that quietly does serious work.

A heavy carved black door opens into a sushi shop where the real draw is nigiri paired with beer, not wine. Moody Tongue comes from the Chicago brewing outfit of the same name, and the menu reads like a collaboration between a sushi counter and a serious taproom. The sets match each piece with a specific pour, and the Shaved Black Truffle Rice Lager is brewed exclusively for this room.

Rank 93. Kubeh
Persian Middle Eastern
Kubeh, the dish, is a dumpling common across the Middle East and nearly impossible to find in New York. This cozy, contemporary restaurant on Sixth Avenue fixes that, with hand-rolled versions filled with meat or mushrooms that the chef learned to make from Kurdish, Iranian, and Syrian women in Israel. Old-world heirlooms on the walls set the tone: this is comfort food with a lineage, served in a room that feels like it means it.
-
Rank 94. I Sodi
Italian
A reservation here is the kind of thing West Village regulars treat as a competitive sport, so walk-ins at odd hours are the move. Rita Sodi's cozy Italian neighborhood restaurant on Bleecker changes its daily specials with the seasons while holding certain signatures hostage in the best way. The bar handles a Negroni with conviction, and the room hums all night with the particular energy of a place where nobody looks like they're having a bad time.

Rank 95. abcV
Vegetarian
Tucked inside ABC Carpet & Home, this vegetarian restaurant runs on the kind of clean-lined, chandelier-scattered energy that makes a green juice feel entirely appropriate in a wine glass. The menu moves through breakfast, brunch, and lunch with pressed juices and kombuchas alongside clever plant-based plates. The New York Times named it among the 100 best restaurants in the city, which the business crowd and the ladies-who-lunch set have known for a while.

Rank 97. Joo Ok
Traditional Korean
A freight elevator hauls you 16 floors above 32nd Street to a dining room that feels like a traditional Korean home transplanted into the Manhattan skyline. The chef's tasting menu holds two Michelin stars and moves through courses that pull from classical Korean cooking while doing things with perilla oil and geoduck that a grandmother would find baffling but probably delicious. The warm sunchoke tea that closes the meal is a genuinely disarming touch.

Rank 98. Bar Miller
Sushi
Bold colors and custom ceramics set the tone at this tiny omakase counter on the Lower East Side, where the whole vibe runs warmer and looser than the austere hush you might expect. The Michelin-starred kitchen leans into North American sourcing, using New York-grown rice and regional fish, with trim and offcuts turned into a house tostada. Local wine, beer, and cider round out a sake list that runs from Brooklyn to Japan.
