  1. Globe lighting, forest green cushions, and gold-trim tables give this wine bar on Queen West a mid-century modern ease that makes an evening here feel deliberately unhurried. The menu has no particular allegiance to any cuisine, which turns out to be a feature: it exists to pace the wine list, not compete with it. A retail shop sits next door for when the bottle you're on becomes a problem you need to solve immediately.

  2. A timber barn on a working farm in the Lanaudière countryside, where the single set menu changes with whatever was just harvested. The chef, originally from Réunion Island, folds those roots quietly into produce that was likely growing outside that morning. Maple syrup is made in-house, birds roam free, and the whole thing is cooked to order. It's the kind of country restaurant where the room and the plate are telling the same story.

  3. Old painted panelling and varnished floorboards give this Mile End bistro the feel of a Paris side street that took a wrong turn and ended up somewhere more interesting. The chef runs a carte blanche menu each evening, which in practice means a shifting parade of influences that refuses to settle on one continent. The namesake dessert, a riff on the classic floating island, shows up eventually, but by then you've already forgotten to expect it.

  4. A terrace, two floors, and a Chinatown corner that always seems to have a lineup outside it. This is a Southern Thai restaurant where the kitchen leans into the heat and funk of regional cooking, the kind that doesn't soften things for the room. The staff are young and quick, which matters because tables turn fast enough that the line moves. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the coconut green curry alone explains why.

  5. White tablecloths and mirrors in the Lower Town, a short walk from the Old Port, where French classics have been the point since forever. This is a traditional French restaurant, the kind where you actually consider the wine list rather than just pointing. The lunch menu is a quieter, simpler affair; evenings lean into full bistro formality. The staff took over the place themselves years ago, which may explain why the service feels like it means it.

  7. Rank 682. Le 101 Restaurant

    Modern French

The open kitchen runs the full back wall, so the team plates in plain view of everyone in the dining room. This is a modern French restaurant in the Saint-Roch neighbourhood, the kind where the cooking has evident range, shaped by time in Charlevoix and in Tokyo. The menu moves through clean, composed dishes with the occasional unexpected turn. The Michelin Guide has selected it.

  8. A bring-your-own-bottle restaurant inside an 1880 house in Vieux-Saint-Eustache, with weathered wood and the general feeling that the building has opinions about locally sourced food. The kitchen leans hard into Québec terroir, wild plants, boreal herbs, and house-made marinades, and the menu shifts with what the season is actually offering. Generous plates, no corkage anxiety, and a room that makes the whole project feel less like a trend than a given.

  9. Rank 682. Le SAINTI

    Charlevoix Canadian

The St. Lawrence stretches out wide enough here that you briefly forget lunch is happening. Le SAINTI is a restaurant in Saint-Irénée with a terrace that earns its postcard setting and a dining room done in quiet maritime tones. The kitchen leans on Charlevoix ingredients, running simpler plates at midday and a longer tasting menu come evening, when the region's producers get more of the spotlight.

  10. The entire back wall is a chalkboard menu, which tells you almost everything you need to know about Le St-Urbain. It's a neighborhood restaurant in Ahuntsic, the kind where natural light comes through big windows and you can watch the kitchen work from your seat. The cooking is seasonal and straightforward, built around flavor rather than flourish, and the room manages to feel lively without trying too hard.

  11. A Rimouski restaurant where poutine shares the menu with Korean-glazed chicken and halibut accras, the local catch standing in for the traditional cod. The kitchen swings confidently between Québécois comfort and a looser, globe-trotting curiosity, and the Nagano pork tomahawk, a breed raised right here in the province, arrives paired with shiitake and root vegetables. A Michelin Selected restaurant that earns the nod by staying grounded in the region while refusing to stay put.

  12. A working farm in the Eastern Townships that doubles as a restaurant, where dinner starts with cider on a covered patio around an open fire before you move inside to a wood-lined room with a vintage feel. The set menu pulls from the farm's own gardens and local producers, something like eighty fruits, vegetables, and herbs showing up across the courses. A quiet drive out, but the kind of meal that earns the silence.

  13. Rank 682. Loiseau d'à Côté

    Traditional French

A small castle-like building across from the Saint-Sauveur church turns out to house a traditional French restaurant with serious local sourcing ambitions. Suckling pig from a named family farm, boudin noir, maple-glazed sweetbreads, and a flat iron steak done properly with mushrooms and red wine give the menu a distinctly Québécois accent. Lunch runs on a set formula; evenings open up to à la carte. The welcome is genuinely warm, in the way that feels earned rather than rehearsed.

  14. Rank 682. Madrina Bar y Tapas

    Catalan Tapas Bar

A Catalan tapas bar and cocktail spot in the Distillery District, where exposed brick and cobblestones do a lot of the atmosphere's heavy lifting so the kitchen doesn't have to. The menu runs from pan con tomate to rice pudding croquetas, with a Spanish wine list and a gin and tonic section that treats the drink with the seriousness of a minor religion. Good for grazing through an evening rather than eating in any particular hurry.

  15. Rank 682. Maison Boire

    Steakhouse

A cube of coffee-colored wood cladding in downtown Granby, ninety minutes from Montreal, with a rooftop herb garden and two crackling maple fires inside that make it feel somewhere between a steakhouse and a farmhouse. The open kitchen and chef's counter face a glassed-in wine cellar and black tables, all of it warmer than the minimalist bones suggest. The cooking is mostly live-fire, built around carefully sourced vegetables, fish, and meat. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  16. Rank 682. Mama Fatma

    Turkish

Pita baked in a wood-burning oven arrives at the table looking like a small dome, and that's before the kebabs charred over coals or the meat spinning on a spit show up. Mama Fatma is a Turkish grill in Mississauga where portions run large and tables tend to disappear under platters. The kayseri mantisi, tiny beef dumplings in garlicky yogurt, could carry a meal on their own. Hot tea closes things out, because there's never room for dessert anyway.

  19. The milk bread comes out of the oven in perfect little rows, which is not a thing you expect from a ramen shop. Tucked off the main strip in Roncesvalles, Musoshin built its broths around a vegetable base rather than the usual pork fat wallop, and the house-made noodles go into every bowl. The chef learned her craft over video calls with the original Kyoto location, which is either very modern or very old-school, depending on how you look at it.

  20. A nineteenth-century house with original ceiling beams sits on the banks of the St. Lawrence in a village that also has a chocolate shop, which tells you something about the neighborhood's priorities. Myranel is a set-menu restaurant where the chef sources almost everything from Portneuf County and rotates the menu every couple of months, with a vegetarian version always on offer. Daring sweet-sour combinations are something of a house signature.

  21. Tucked onto the second floor of a shopping mall on Marine Drive, this sprawling Cantonese banquet hall is the kind of place locals fill on weekends without needing to tell anyone about it. Dim sum runs through the afternoon, with dumplings packed with shrimp that actually justify the wait. Dinner pivots to a broader seafood menu, lobster and abalone among them. 23. A custom reverse-flow wood smoker does the heavy lifting at this halal barbecue spot tucked into a Scarborough strip mall, and the smell reaches you before the signage does. Order a multi-meat plate, a sandwich, or by the pound, and the menu swings from Montreal-style brisket to Korean-inflected short ribs without losing the thread. The maple-smoked beans are a quiet reminder that you're firmly in Canada, not Tennessee.

  24. A blackboard menu, sharing plates, and a bring-your-own-wine policy set the tone at this low-key Montréal bistro. The kitchen leans into seasonal Québec produce from small farms, turning it into rustic, flavor-forward plates you pass around the table. The room itself is put together with recycled materials, which feels fitting given how seriously the place takes its sourcing. Pack a bottle and settle in.

  25. Octopus figurines colonize every surface of this cozy, been-around-forever sushi shop on Cornwall, which either charms you immediately or makes you wonder if you've wandered into a marine biology gift store. Luckily the fish is the real draw: supremely fresh nigiri that rotates with the seasons, maki that wanders happily off-script, and specials worth paying attention to. Regional French

The crêpes Suzette arrive in flames, which sets the tone for a fine-dining room that runs on hospitality-school energy. Student cooks and floor staff work the room under instructor supervision, so your dinner is technically someone's final exam. The menu follows classical French technique with Quebec sourcing, Gaspé fish and Lanaudière bison moving through dishes that shift with the seasons. Square Saint-Louis sits just outside the window.

  35. The dining room of the National Assembly of Quebec sits behind twenty columns under ceilings that make every lunch feel like a minor constitutional crisis. It's a formal restaurant in a heritage building, where the chef draws on honey from the parliament's own beehives and produce from its kitchen garden. The set menu takes its cues from Indigenous cultures, which gives the grandeur upstairs a more grounded reason to exist.

  40. A counter with room for barely twenty, where the chef works through a dozen-plus nigiri at a pace that suggests he has never once second-guessed himself. This is omakase sushi on Robson Street, priced closer to a nice dinner out than a flight across the Pacific. 41. Drums play overhead while chefs break down whole fish at the counter, so the omakase here functions more like dinner theater than a quiet procession of nigiri. 55. The entrance sits on the seventh floor because the hotel is carved into the side of Sulphur Mountain and simply keeps going downhill from there, which means nearly every room faces the same broad sweep of Rocky Mountain valley. It's a full resort in Banff, so gondolas, ski hills, and hot springs are all close, but the building's clever geometry means you don't need to leave the window to feel like you're already somewhere improbable.

  57. An English manor house relocated, spiritually at least, to a 22-acre spread above Ganges Harbour on Salt Spring Island. This small luxury country house hotel runs just 18 rooms and suites, keeping things quietly unhurried in a way that larger properties can only promise. Spa treatments happen in a converted barn, the restaurant puts a Swiss chef's European training against British Columbia's seasonal larder, and the ferry ride over from Vancouver already feels like the trip beginning.

The chef's counter overlooking the kitchen is the seat to book at this sleek, third-floor tasting menu restaurant from Patrick Kriss. Six or ten courses move between European and Asian sensibilities without announcing the pivot each time. The bar takes walk-ins and treats them accordingly. A Michelin star sits on the shelf. Somehow the room, all burgundy and diffused light, never tips into solemnity.

  60. Rank 758. BarChef

    Modern Cocktail Bar

A single word above a heavy black door on Queen West is all the signposting BarChef bothers with. Inside, brick walls, dark wood, and dimmed lighting pull every eye toward the bar, which is exactly where Frankie Solarik wants you. The specialty is what the menu calls modernist cocktails, and the theatrical production values are not incidental to the drink. Aged bottled cocktails and punch bowls round out a list that takes itself seriously, and somehow gets away with it.

    New Orleans Cajun & Creole

The marble bar top, tin ceiling, and tile floor make Geraldine feel like it's been on Queen West since long before Queen West was Queen West. It hasn't, but the New Orleans-themed cocktail bar wears the illusion well. Green walls and floor-to-ceiling windows that fold open frame a long, narrow room where the bar along the left wall is clearly where the action is. Cajun and Creole food runs in the background, but the bar stools are the point.

  66. The hotel had a colorful past before its transformation into one of Queen West's anchor addresses, and the lounge bar still carries that energy: loud, packed, and moving fast. Artists in residence leave their mark on the walls, so the room always looks like something is happening, because it usually is. A cocktail bar where the drinks share equal billing with the scene, and where the crowd tends to arrive already in a good mood.

    Cocktail Bar

A converted row house near U of T, with a backyard patio and ten seats at the bar, The Harbord Room is a cocktail bar that somehow manages to be a neighborhood spot and a destination at once. The staff is young and unstuffy, the room keeps its tables low and its energy lower, and the whole thing sits at the edge of a residential block like it landed there by accident and decided to stay.

  77. An unmarked brown door on College Street, opened only by membership card, is all the warning you get. Inside, a narrow staircase climbs to a small, dimly lit speakeasy with dark wood, ten bar seats, and two tucked-away seating areas. It's a members-only cocktail bar, though out-of-towners willing to email ahead have been known to get in. The kind of place that makes you feel like you know something most people don't.

  81. The floorboards are milled from Nova Scotian lumber, which tells you where the owners' loyalties lie. This boutique inn occupies a handsome Italianate mansion that survived a fire in the 1890s, and its restoration was quietly shaped by a trip to Italy and an interest in slow-living hospitality. Rooms are simply but warmly decorated, breakfast is made in-house, and your hosts apparently have strong opinions about where to eat locally.

Duck confit on pancakes is the kind of move that sounds like a dare until you're halfway through and quietly reconsidering your whole morning. Argo is a neighbourhood diner on Ontario Street where the soups taste like someone actually waited, the fried chicken and waffles show up with conviction, and the servers have the easy warmth of people who've seen you in this booth before. Vancouver Magazine gave it a Gold Medal for Best Casual, which tracks.

  84. A raw-concrete modernist house a short walk from the Avon Theatre, designed by Shim/Sutcliffe in the spirit of Tadao Ando, renting as a self-contained two-bedroom stay. The furnishings are modernist classics, the art is contemporary, and the kitchen comes stocked with Pelee Island wine and Le Labo bath products. It sits among Stratford's Victorian Gothic streetscapes like a polite argument. Check-in is Fridays or Mondays, with a minimum stay, so plan accordingly.

  92. A 19th-century foundry turned boutique hotel on Lake Ontario, Drake Devonshire sits in Prince Edward County wine country with twelve rooms that range from a skylit nook called the Stargazer to a full A-frame suite. The design is all contemporary art and warm farmhouse bones, and the outdoor restaurant draws a sociable crowd that arrived carrying the cult energy of the original Drake in Toronto. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  93. Floor-to-ceiling glass on a black rock promontory above the Pacific, because the rainforest-lodge aesthetic has been done. This contemporary oceanfront resort selected by the Michelin Guide sits outside Ucluelet on Vancouver Island, with rooms built around the view: California kings, gas fireplaces, kitchenettes, and enough square footage that "hotel room" barely covers it. A full-service spa and a sea-view restaurant round things out for when the ocean stops being enough.

  94. A red brick Gothic Revival mansion a block from Picton Harbour, Merrill House is the kind of boutique hotel that makes you wonder if you've quietly teleported to an English village. The owners split their time between here and London, and the décor takes that seriously, inside and out. Prince Edward County's wine country surrounds it, but the house itself is all anglophile calm, quiet enough to feel quasi-rural despite sitting just off Main Street.

    The awards

  95. Tucked between a deserted beach and the Wild Pacific Trail on Vancouver Island's Pacific coast, this cabin resort sits in the quieter, less photographed neighbor town to Tofino. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom standalone cabins are the draw, each feeling genuinely removed from everything, whether perched at the water's edge or nested deeper in the forest. The main lodge has suites if you want something smaller, but the cabins are why you came.

  96. A renovated roadside motel in Prince Edward County wine country, The June sits just outside Picton with views over a protected bay. The 16 rooms run mod-bohemian, very photogenic, and the lobby bar carries the day from morning coffee through late-night cocktails. Guests eventually migrate to the garden firepit when the weather holds. The makeover was compelling enough that a second project earned its own Netflix series.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
