  2. Beignets dusted in powdered sugar and a personal bottle of sparkling juice set the tone at this Louisiana-inspired breakfast and lunch spot in Denver's Capitol Hill. The walls are loaded with Creole country kitsch, and the silverware arrives wrapped in bright fabric. The chicory coffee and housemade hot sauce are the real throughlines. A local chain, but one that has regulars debating grits versus potatoes, which is exactly the right argument to be having.

  3. The two-story dining room pulls off a plausible New Orleans impression without leaving Baltimore, which is the whole point. This Cajun and Creole restaurant runs on the late Paul Prudhomme's influence, and the kitchen leans into Maryland pantry staples to keep the gumbo and jambalaya from feeling like a costume. The Sazerac, New Orleans' official cocktail, is on the menu, and ordering one is the correct move.

  5. The paper cocktail napkins tucked under the stemware haven't changed since the '90s, and that's the point. SNOB is an old-school Charleston dining room that made local, seasonal Southern cooking a serious proposition before it was a trend. Day boat fish arrives crispy outside and tender within, cornbread is non-negotiable, and the butterbeans are exactly right. The room carries its era comfortably, and the kitchen cooks like the legacy is watching.

  6. A mother-and-son Cajun and soul food restaurant where the menu shifts with the day of the week: catfish on Fridays, wings on Wednesdays, Sharon's soul food the first Sunday of the month. Their Louisiana and Mississippi roots show in a shrimp étouffée that's lighter and brighter than you'd expect, and a beef debris over grits that rewards patience. Hong Kong-style praline French toast with cardamom and fennel is either the strangest thing on the menu or the most logical.

  7. Rank 107. Prelude

    Southern Cocktail Bar

Fried chicken wings stuffed with andouille dirty rice tell you everything about this Southern-leaning cocktail bar and dining room in the Jay Hotel. The chef's Alabama roots show up in pimento cheese dressed with trout roe and banana cream pie reimagined as a chocolate-pretzel tartlet, dishes that straddle Sunday supper and something more deliberate. The room is dusky and quietly glamorous, the kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like a reason to dress up.

  8. Rank 107. Soby's

    Southern

Pimiento fondue over fried green tomatoes is the kind of dish that makes you wonder why the rest of the country isn't doing this. Soby's is a downtown Greenville institution, a full-service Southern restaurant where the dining room buzzes on a Tuesday and the bar fills up fast enough that a reservation is a good idea. The wine list runs deeper than the room suggests, and the kitchen keeps its Southern cooking earnest and unfussy.

  9. Rank 109. Haberdish

    Southern

The name nods to NoDa's old textile-mill past, and the denim-covered banquettes keep the joke going without overdoing it. This is a Southern comfort restaurant with exposed beams, a lively counter, and a menu that leans into fried chicken, deviled eggs, and banana pudding served in a Mason jar. Weekend brunch draws a crowd, the draft beer list is long, and the tater tots are not something to wave away.

  10. Rank 110. St. Roch Fine Oysters + Bar

    Cajun & Creole Oyster Bar

The shucker behind the raw bar is working through a daily haul from North Carolina and beyond, which tells you everything about where the priorities lie. St. Roch is an oyster bar and bistro in a converted downtown clothing store, with Louisiana roots informing the menu: barbecue shrimp and grits on weekends, beignets to close. 11. Rank 111. Rollin Smoke Barbeque

    Southern Barbecue

Rollin Smoke is a casual barbecue counter where hickory-smoked meats share the plate with hush puppies, fried okra, and dirty rice. The outlaw burger comes stacked so high with brisket, onion strings, and slaw that eating it politely is a rumor, and a sauce bar lets you add a Carolina vinegar squirt anyway. Picnic tables and a mural of a pastoral landscape do the decorating, which seems about right.

  12. Rank 112. 4 Saints

    Southern

On the seventh floor of the Rowan Hotel, this fine dining room has the highest rooftop in downtown Palm Springs, with the San Jacinto Mountains spread out in every direction. The chef riffs on Southern cooking, grilled steaks and seasonal produce with a warm-weather looseness that fits the setting. Date-infused Old Fashioneds arrive while the light goes gold. Prices float as high as the altitude, but so does everything worth watching in Palm Springs.

  13. Rank 112. Ajax Diner

    Southern

Christmas lights, neon signs, and red vinyl booths set the mood at this cheerful Southern diner on Oxford's courthouse square, a fixture of the Ole Miss universe for as long as anyone cares to remember. The kitchen sticks to the classics: fried catfish, chicken and dumplings, a vegetable platter of butter beans and turnip greens. Students and locals who've been coming since forever fill the booths, and nobody's skipping the chocolate chess pie.

  14. Rank 112. Bitterroot

A charred biscuit under bone marrow and black pepper gravy is a reasonable reason to track down a strip mall. Bitterroot is a casual, farm-to-table Southern spot with concrete floors, wood beams, and marble tables giving it an easygoing country-modern feel. Gulf shrimp and grits and a sweet tea pork chop carry dinner, and the pecan pie with brown butter ice cream is not optional. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

  15. Rank 112. City Grocery

    Southern

Red brick walls, local art, and wood worn down by decades of good evenings set the tone at John Currence's Southern restaurant and bar on Oxford's courthouse square. The menu turns with the seasons but stays close to the region, running from fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade to the shrimp and grits that regulars treat as non-negotiable. Portions are built for sharing, and the bar earns its own reputation, landing on Wildsam's list of essential American bars.

  16. Scarlet banquettes, a long marble bar, and checkered tile set a confident tone in downtown Memphis before you've even opened the menu. This is a Southern restaurant with a clear point of view, where the kitchen leans into Gulf shrimp, tasso ham, jalapeño cornbread, and fried quail with spiced honey, all without apology. Chef Felicia Suzanne has been at this long enough that the regulars probably know the menu cold, and the room still fills anyway.

    French-Creole Cajun & Creole

Friday lunch at this old-school Bourbon Street institution is a full-contact sport: pearls, suits, balloons, Champagne, and party hats arrive with the first seating and don't slow down. The mirrored, gold-accented dining room has been running French-Creole classics for generations, with tuxedoed servers and a menu that treats butter and cream as load-bearing ingredients. Southern

The pergola-shaded patio alone explains why this Culver West neighborhood restaurant fills up fast. Inside, tufted leather banquettes and an L-shaped bar give it the feel of a Southern roadhouse that got a little lucky with real estate. The menu leans into biscuits, pork, and seasonal vegetables with genuine conviction, and the vegetable section is substantial enough to build a whole meal around without anyone feeling cheated.

  19. The heat scale here runs from "Southern" (no heat at all) to "Shut the Cluck Up," which tells you most of what you need to know. Hattie B's is a counter-service hot chicken spot, and Nashville basically treats it as a civic institution. Order dark or white meat, bones or boneless, then pick your tier and brace accordingly. Knotty pine paneling and booth seating give this Reynoldstown breakfast cafe the feel of a diner that's been around forever, but the menu keeps you guessing. Southern country cooking anchors everything, with local sourcing running through the whole operation, and the daily specials can swing from house-made tamales to frog legs without warning. The open-faced buttermilk biscuit buried under pork sausage gravy is the kind of thing people drive across town for.

Inside the Hauser & Wirth arts complex in the Arts District, Manuela is a restaurant and bar where conceptual art hangs on the walls and the cooking tilts Southern with a serious commitment to local ingredients, some grown in their own garden. 23. Rank 112. Maringouin

    Contemporary Southern

The name is Cajun-French for mosquito, which is a bold thing to call a place where people are paying for dinner. It's the restaurant attached to a boutique hotel in Ocean Springs, and the menu wanders from Southern to Latin to Asian without apologizing for it. Plenty of diners dress up for the occasion, and the cocktail list has more range than you'd expect from a town this size. It's a Michelin Guide Selected Restaurant.

  24. Southern comfort restaurant on the edge of Harlem where the collard greens and candied yams arrive as supporting cast to fried chicken that doesn't need any introduction. 30. Rank 112. Seraphine

    Southern

A moody Southern restaurant tucked into the restored American Tobacco complex, Seraphine pulls off the trick of feeling both historic and a little sultry at once. The marble bar is a good place to start with a cocktail before moving on to fried shrimp, broiled oysters, or a bowl of gumbo. A large terrace opens things up when the weather cooperates. The menu splits the difference between New Orleans and Texas, with po'boys, fried seafood platters, and a seafood boil that arrives with enough vegetables to feel responsible about it. Daiquiris are the fuel. Wear whatever survived the evening.

  51. Rank 151. BIG CAT

    Southern

Cat kitsch lines the shelves at this neighborhood restaurant and bodega in Raleigh, where a team of five local culinary figures pooled their talent and built something that feels both familiar and hard to place. The menu reads Southern but veers into duck-fat fried wings with harissa and honey, cornbread with curry leaf butter, and charred cabbage over tofu pesto. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List, which tracks.

  52. Rank 151. Catfish King

    Soul Food

Fried catfish on white bread with hush puppies or collard greens on the side, served out of a former fast-food shell on East Colfax, is the whole pitch here, and it lands. This is a counter-service soul food spot where the staff are warm and the portions are not modest. Barbecue, chicken gizzards, and Sunday-only chitlins round out a menu rooted in Oklahoma tradition that the team is clearly not shy about.

  53. Rank 151. Juice Holler

    Appalachian Café

A juice-and-smoothie cafe on Coast Highway 101 that borrows its name from the Appalachian word for a valley where neighbors gather, which is a lot of heritage for something that also serves bee pollen. Bright murals of butterflies, mountains, and waves cover the walls, and there's seating inside and out. Expect bone broth, matcha lattes, and smoothie bowls, plus Eater's October 2026 list of new San Diego-area restaurants.

  54. Rank 151. La Roux Bistro

    French-inspired Cajun & Creole

A French-Cajun bistro built around a sub-basement that nobody knew existed until construction crews found it, two levels below the street with old stonework still intact. The team leaned in rather than filling it with concrete, so you can eat your way through a Cajun-and-French-inspired menu deep underground like some kind of delicious urban spelunking. Ground level is technically the third floor, which is a good conversation starter if the food leaves you speechless.

  55. Rank 151. Little Bird

    Cajun & Creole

A dark-roux gumbo the color of old leather opens the case for this coastal Southern restaurant in a light-filled two-story house in artsy Fairhope. The kitchen leans into Louisiana Cajun tradition rather than the tomato-stewed Mobile Bay norm, and the crowd that fills it knows the difference. The New York Times put Little Bird on its 2026 Restaurant List, which tracks with the technically minded cooking on offer.

  57. Rank 151. Perennial Restaurant

    Plant-Forward Southern

An avocado-green century-old house in Cloverdale with purple tablecloths and an empty birdcage or two sets the mood for this plant-forward Southern dinner spot run by a local nutrition professor. The menu leans hard on Alabama ingredients and zero-waste cooking, so your steak might be squash, and the chimichurri is made from carrot tops. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List. Go easy on the 124-proof Judge Roy Bean.

  58. Rank 158. Grann

    BBQ-Indian fusion Cajun & Creole

Deep-fried puri shells arrive golf-ball-size and hollow, packed with cool pimento cheese softened by sweet onion jam, and that alone explains why Tacoma's Grann has Seattle making the drive south. The restaurant calls itself Southern BBQ, Creole, and Indian fusion, but the food lands somewhere past hyphenation, like a cuisine that simply grew up that way. Dramatic green walls and a tiger photograph that somehow matches the room give the dining room real personality.

  59. Heather Earnhardt's Southern-inflected restaurant now lives inside a historic coastal hotel in Tokeland, having migrated from its Capitol Hill origins. Cozy breakfast anchors the day, surrounded by farmhouse antiques and tchotchkes that feel genuinely accumulated rather than styled. Big buttery biscuits and fried chicken carried over from the original, joined by fried oysters from nearby Willapa Bay and local fish gone cornmeal-and-grits.

    Southern Diner

A gas station with a grill inside and a rack of nudie magazines by the register, which explains both the name and the bumper stickers you've been seeing since you crossed the bridge. 66. A former pop-up that found a permanent home inside Au Lounge in downtown Oakland, Chef Smelly's draws on Creole family recipes to put out Cajun-spiced seafood and soul food. Garlicky Dungeness crab and blackened shrimp anchor the menu, and the platters run large enough to qualify as a commitment. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's top seafood spots. Dress accordingly: this is crab-cracking, garlic-breath, no-apologies territory.

  69. The meat-and-three is Nashville's quieter religion, and this old-school soda shop on Elliston Place is one of its oldest temples. Red leather booths, a soda counter, fried chicken, whipped potatoes, turnip greens, and pies that have had the same baker for over thirty years. The milkshakes and banana splits bring in a different kind of regular. The New York Times named it among Nashville's 25 best restaurants.

  70. Rank 162. Five Bar

Five Bar keeps its dinner and brunch menus to exactly five entrees each, which sounds like a gimmick until you're actually sitting with fried Gulf shrimp in a downtown room full of exposed brick and local art. Half coffee shop, half full-bar restaurant, it runs happy hours, wine Wednesdays, and a weekend jazz brunch with a build-your-own bloody Mary bar. The kind of place that makes a short menu feel like confidence rather than laziness.

  71. Florence Jones Kemp started this soul food institution in the front room of a two-room apartment, serving hot dogs on, as she put it, "a hot dog and a prayer." Decades later, she and her daughter Victoria are still running the kitchen together, with fried chicken, candied yams, braised oxtail, fresh-baked rolls, cornbread, and pie holding down the menu. The James Beard Foundation gave Florence's an America's Classics award, which about covers it.

  77. Rank 162. Southern Ale House

    Southern Beer Bar

Bacon-wrapped meatloaf with a tomato jam glaze is the signature at this Southern comfort food and craft beer spot just across the river from campus. The patio is the main event on game days, and the menu leans hard into the classics: prime rib rolls, collard greens, sweet potato tots, biscuits. It's the kind of place where the sides could carry the whole meal on their own, which in Alabama is not considered a problem.

  78. The Back Bar's sunsets over Currituck Sound are their own argument for showing up early. This is fine dining with a Southern drawl, the kind of place where shrimp and grits comes with bay scallops and red-eye gravy, and the wine list was built by an actual sommelier. Fancy enough to mean it, relaxed enough that Duck feels like the right setting. An old-school Outer Banks institution that the locals treat accordingly.

The Colonnade is an old-school Southern supper club on Cheshire Bridge where servers have your order memorized before you sit down and the regulars fill the room like furniture. 85. Rank 188. AJ’s Jazzy Grill

    Cajun & Creole

AJ's Jazzy Grill is a casual Creole counter in Tremé that began as a food truck under the Claiborne bridge, which explains why everything tastes faintly like a backyard cookout. There are a few tables and some TVs, but the real business is takeout and delivery. Come in sweatpants, order the sweet potato pie the chef's mom bakes, and don't bother pretending you're stopping by for the atmosphere.

  87. Rank 188. Bubba

    Southern

Chandeliers hang over the shrimp and grits at this Southern comfort restaurant, which commits to the contradiction with a straight face. The menu runs through fried chicken and waffles, pimento mac and cheese, and biscuits, but the room is full date-night, not diner. The bourbon list is one of the longer ones in Iowa, which is saying something in a state that takes corn seriously. End with the hummingbird cake if you know what's good for you.

  88. Rank 188. Chapter IV

    Modern Cajun & Creole

Chapter IV is a modern Creole restaurant from the family behind Dooky Chase, which means the gumbo arrives with a dark roux and a full cast of sausage, shrimp, chicken, and crab. The menu is long enough to stall a first-timer, though the squid ink linguine is a good place to start. Dress like you might run into someone, because by all accounts your ex, your old coworker, and half your high school class are already inside.

  89. Rank 188. Congaree And Penn

    Modern Southern

Congaree And Penn is a working farm about twelve miles outside Downtown that happens to have a restaurant and a cidery attached, so you may meet a goat before you meet your server. By day it's picnic lunches and U-Pick. After dark it goes adults-only and turns into a proper Southern dinner of duck legs and short ribs, with small-batch cider on tap and a private table out in the grapevines for groups.

  90. Rank 188. Deanie’s Restaurant

    Cajun & Creole Seafood

Deanie's on Hayne is a casual, family-run seafood house out in the Lakeview-adjacent stretch, far from any Bourbon Street souvenir shop with a daiquiri machine. The platters arrive heaped with fried shrimp, catfish, stuffed crab, and oyster patties, and they're built for sharing, though nobody will fault you for not. The daily specials run around twenty dollars. On Thursdays, the original owner, Maw Maw Deanie, sometimes stops by your table to chat.

  95. The roast beef Manhattan, a pile of roasted chuck and mashed potatoes drowned in gravy, tells you everything you need to know about this soul food diner on North College. Barack Obama ate here before he was Barack Obama, and the regulars have never let the place forget it. A fire in 2020 took the famously uneven floors but not the rib tips or the neck bones, and the rebuilt room now seats 500 and has a full bar.

  96. The gumbo here has been a Detroit obsession for decades, a shrimp-and-sausage situation thickened with okra and a proprietary spice blend nobody's giving up the recipe for. This is a carryout counter spot, casual and no-frills, with jambalaya, red beans and rice, and shrimp po'boys on crackly baguettes rounding out a menu that stays squarely in the Louisiana lane. Order at the counter, take it home, and resist eating it in the car.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
