The 100 Best Places in Brooklyn

The best places in Brooklyn, according to the experts: Michelin Guide, The 50, and The New York Times have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Aska comes out on top.

More Less

The Four Horsemen and Henry Public hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The New York Times close behind.

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. Black tablecloths, candlelight, and a deer skull resting on a bed of lichen: Fredrik Berselius runs a tasting menu restaurant in South Williamsburg that feels less like dinner and more like being guided through a dark forest by something polite but feral. The cooking is New Nordic in spirit, pulling from Northeastern seasonality, and it holds two Michelin stars and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Wear something dark; you'll blend right in.

  2. The natural wine list here won a James Beard Award, and the Michelin star belongs to the kitchen, which tells you this Williamsburg bar is doing two things at once and doing neither halfway. The room is famously small and the wait is famously brutal, but Nick Curtola's seasonal menu follows its own logic, landing somewhere between a great wine bar snack and something you'll think about for weeks. James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem is a co-owner, which explains the playlist.

  3. Rank 4. Oxomoco

    Mexican

Tacos share menu space with agua chile and tlayuda at this airy Greenpoint Mexican restaurant, which holds a Michelin star and carries itself like it doesn't need to mention it. The kitchen ranges across regional Mexico rather than settling into one lane, so the menu shifts around you a little each visit. The room is loud and packed in the way that usually signals something is going right.

  4. A Michelin-starred omakase counter tucked near Domino Park on a quiet Williamsburg block. The chef talks through the meal as it arrives, explaining which region the fish came from, why the rice is what it is, and how long he hunted for the aged soys, so the whole thing feels more like a conversation than a performance. The nigiri is the main event, and the rice gets refreshed throughout, a detail that separates the obsessives from the casual.

  5. The limestone facade on Broadway gives way to ash wood, mosaic tile, and a wide-open kitchen that runs the whole show. This is a French brasserie with a Michelin star, the kind of place where the duck arrives whole before someone carves it tableside. Williamsburg's dressed-up crowd fills the generously spaced tables, and nobody looks out of place in either a blazer or a good jacket.

  6. Rank 7. Clover Club

    Cocktail Bar

The long wooden bar came out of a Pennsylvania mining-town dance hall and has been anchoring this Smith Street cocktail bar ever since. Victorian paneling, a tin ceiling, and a curtained parlor with a fireplace in the back make the whole room feel like someone's very well-stocked study. The cocktails are precise and the eponymous Clover Club is on the menu, naturally. The kind of place that makes Brooklyn feel older than it is.

  7. The unmarked door on Green Street gives nothing away, which is sort of the point. Inside, a converted warehouse with wood-beamed ceilings holds a tasting menu restaurant built around a single organizing idea: every dish is either fired or chilled, and you watch the open kitchen run both with near-monastic focus. Chefs serve their own food here, no front-of-house divide. The Nordic New American cooking is ingredient-first, the room is genuinely dramatic, and the clamshell amuse-bouche is as ridiculous as it sounds.

  8. The line out the door on South 2nd is the most honest review you'll find. This Williamsburg slice shop has a counter, a few standing ledges, and pizza makers working in plain sight from dough to oven. The crust is thin, crisp, and taken seriously. 50 Top Pizza ranked it the top slice shop in the country, and the New York Times put it on their short list too. Order, pay, wait for your name, eat standing up. That's the whole deal.

  9. Rank 7. Maison Premiere

    Cocktail Bar

A four-tap absinthe drip at the center of the bar is a replica of the one at the Absinthe House in New Orleans, and that tells you most of what you need to know. Maison Premiere is a cocktail and oyster bar in Williamsburg that commits fully to the bit: dim golden light, mock antique everything, marble bar top, the faint sense that you've wandered into another city and century. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, which tracks.

  12. The line down the block on weekends is a reliable feature, and so is the sign that says they've sold out early. Radio Bakery is a small Greenpoint spot where croissants get shaped like Danishes and filled with whatever's good that month, focaccia sandwiches come stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and the brown butter corn cake is the thing to grab for later. Frustrating in all the right ways.

  13. Rank 12. Restaurant Yuu

    Contemporary French

Service begins with the lights dropping and curtains parting to reveal the full kitchen brigade standing at attention, which sets the tone for what follows. This is a tasting menu restaurant in Greenpoint where the chef's classic French training and Japanese background meet in a warehouse-scale dining room. Shellfish and proteins carry the menu, and a duck and foie gras pastry feels like a find from a more extravagant era. It holds a Michelin star.

  14. Rank 12. Sofreh

    Persian

Nasim Alikhani spent decades as a home cook in the Iranian diaspora before opening this Persian restaurant in Park Slope at 58, which explains why the food feels like someone's mother finally decided to show the city what she'd been holding back. Whitewashed brick, marble bar, black wood beams. The kitchen is faithful to Persian tradition but loose enough to foam a yogurt or call a pomegranate-marinated rib-eye a kebab. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef New York State.

  15. The big neon sign out front survived the gap years when nothing else did, and it still draws you in off Atlantic Avenue. This Art Deco bar in Cobble Hill has been around forever, and Toby Cecchini, the bartender who invented the Cosmopolitan, brought it back to life with the booths and floral wallpaper more or less intact. The kitchen does a Reuben and a double-patty burger, but the cocktails are what fill the room on a Tuesday.

  16. Every room at this Williamsburg hotel comes with its own city-view balcony, which tells you roughly what you're dealing with. The rooftop holds a 15,000-square-foot public park with rolling hills and picnic blankets, so it doubles as a neighborhood hangout rather than a private amenity. The interior leans into the borough's art-forward instincts without overdoing it, and the skyline views from up top are the kind that make Manhattan feel like a reasonable commute.

  17. Missy Robbins runs an open kitchen inside a former car body shop in East Williamsburg, which tells you something about the bones of the room before a single plate arrives. Lilia is the kind of Italian pasta restaurant where everything is handmade and the mafaldini with pink peppercorns has turned regulars into a kind of informal cult. The New York Times gave it three stars, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed.

  18. Reservations at this tiny Crown Heights Cambodian restaurant evaporate fast enough that "arrive early and hope" is a legitimate strategy. Shared plates and a high-energy counter setup make it better with four than two. A James Beard semifinalist for Best New Restaurant, it pulls off the thing where every dish on the table disappears before anyone meant it to.

  19. Rank 19. Gage & Tollner

    Steakhouse

Vintage mirrors, cherry wood, and brass gas chandeliers give this Downtown Brooklyn steakhouse an amber glow that makes every Tuesday feel like an occasion. The kitchen draws on the legacy of Edna Lewis, who ran it in the late eighties, so fried chicken and crab cakes share the menu with dry-aged prime beef. Dessert gets taken seriously, which a baked Alaska deserves. It has a spot on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

  21. Floor-to-ceiling windows look straight across the East River at the Lower Manhattan skyline, a view few New York hotels can match. This eco-minded luxury hotel sits at the edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where salvaged materials and low-impact design feel less like a brand statement and more like a natural fit for a waterfront that was industrial wasteland not so long ago. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Key.

  22. Rank 22. Place des Fêtes

    Spanish Wine Bar

The team behind Oxalis opened this Clinton Hill wine bar as a casual second act, and the kitchen takes it as seriously as the cellar. Both lean Spanish: natural wines from small producers, simple seafood, grilled toast, and vegetable plates that hold their own. The bar and open kitchen anchor a cozy room that fills up fast, so arrive early or embrace the wait with a glass of something zippy.

  23. The lobby is as big as a city block and designed, without apology, for people who will open a laptop in it. Ace Hotel Brooklyn is a Michelin Key hotel sitting on the edge of Boerum Hill, where the industrial bones and deliberately low-key atmosphere draw the kind of guests who prefer brownstone streets over Midtown. The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is a short walk, and the ground floor bar handles the rest of your evening.

  24. A glass-enclosed rooftop bar with unobstructed Manhattan skyline views is a reasonable argument for crossing the bridge. This Wythe Avenue hotel occupies a striking eight-story building in brick, glass, and weathered steel, with double-height guest rooms fitted out in custom furniture that leans toward retro modernism with a bit of prewar New York texture. An Eastern Mediterranean restaurant sits off the lobby for when you'd rather not wander far.

  25. Rank 24. Café Kestrel

    Unfussy European Bistro

A tiny Red Hook corner spot where the menu fits on one page and the fried halloumi, served warm over honey, made the New York Times list of top dishes. Café Kestrel runs pan-European with a French lean: terrines, duck confit, a seafood plate finished with gaufrettes. The room is casual enough for a Tuesday but pulled-together enough that you won't feel underdressed ordering dessert, which the staff will gently insist upon anyway.

  26. The brass footrest running the length of the bar sets the tone: this is a proper neighborhood tavern in Red Hook, the kind with exposed brick, floral wallpaper, and candles wedged between wine bottles on tight-packed tables. The menu is short and the cooking leans classic, which is a polite way of saying the dry-aged cheeseburger with cottage fries is not something you'll talk yourself out of. A James Beard Semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality.

    French

The line wrapping around the Fort Greene corner is not a glitch; it's just how things work at April Bloomfield's neighborhood seafood bistro, where eggs with celery salt and a roast chicken somehow outshine the obvious Instagram moment. The skylit room is bright and unhurried, the menu turns with the seasons, and lunch earns its own following with a burger that regulars treat as a state secret.

  28. Rank 24. Theodora

    Mediterranean Seafood

Wood smoke hangs in the air the moment you walk into this Fort Greene seafood restaurant, which should tell you something about how the kitchen operates. Chef Tomer Blechman anchors the menu around dry-aged fish and open-fire cooking, pulling from a Mediterranean pantry that keeps things interesting without announcing itself. The bar draws a crowd that clearly has opinions about natural wine, and the pita alone justifies showing up early.

    New American

The "Laundromat" sign from the old tenant is still up out front, which means half the neighborhood has walked past a very good French bistro without knowing it. Inside, brick walls and vintage furniture set a mood that feels broken-in rather than designed, and the menu leans on Northeast ingredients for a modern French run through small plates and proper mains. Greenpoint regulars who've found it tend not to share the address.

  30. Rank 30. Bonnie's

    Cantonese

Calvin Eng's Cantonese restaurant and bar sits on a nondescript east Williamsburg corner, close enough to the BQE that you'll feel the trucks. Inside, it reads like a retro Hong Kong diner, but the kitchen runs modern interpretations of regional Cantonese food, and the MSG Martini earned a spot on Esquire's national list. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, and the James Beard Foundation named Eng an Emerging Chef nominee.

  32. Jackets are required, which should tell you everything about the register here. This fine dining landmark sits right under the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Manhattan skyline fills the windows the way a painting would if you couldn't afford the real thing. The prix fixe menu is formal and unhurried, the waitstaff operate with genuine poise, and couples have been proposing at these tables for decades.

  33. A converted 1901 factory building in Williamsburg with 13-foot ceilings, original wood beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Manhattan skyline. The Wythe holds a Michelin Key, and the in-house credentials are real: Le Crocodile, the French brasserie downstairs, draws its own crowd, and Bar Blondeau on the sixth floor has views that make the room feel optional. Industrial-chic without the irony quotes, and about as Williamsburg as a hotel gets.

The tall, narrow wood-framed windows let you see the whole room before you walk in, which is a nice preview of a Taiwanese restaurant that doesn't hide anything. Eric Sze and partner Andy Chuang run a menu that moves between popcorn chicken dusted in a sweet-spicy blend and whole striped bass lacquered in black sugar and yuzu, and the beef noodle soup, built on a 16-hour oxtail broth, has a following of its own.

  39. Rank 37. Zoli

    Seafood

A seafood restaurant in Williamsburg run by a fisherman's son, which shows. The menu leans on familiar territory but keeps swerving: surf clam in aguachile, mussels that are genuinely plush, squid that's properly charred. Then dessert arrives and a Basque cheesecake shows up funked with taleggio. The New York Times gave it two stars and a spot on their Restaurant List, which for a room this unpretentious in Maujer St feels about right.

  40. Nick Curtola's trattoria across from sibling bar The Four Horsemen handles regional Italian with the kind of restraint that makes everything taste more intentional. Braised beef tendon shaved thin over acidic onions is the opening move, and it tells you exactly what kind of kitchen this is. Handmade pasta and rustic mains follow that same logic. The tiramisu is feather-light and enormous. Reservations go fast, but the bar at opening is a fine consolation.

This Yemeni restaurant in Bay Ridge fills a brick-and-dark-wood room with families, neighborhood lifers, and northward refugees all tearing into great rounds of rashoosh and heaping plates of lamb. A disco ball spins over the dining room at this Graham Avenue pizzeria, where the thin-crust pies share the bill with house pasta and focaccia made in the open kitchen. The Italian wine list runs to two pages of sparkling alone, which tells you something about the ambitions here. The Calabrian soppressata and hot honey on the Diavola have a following. Michelin has it in the guide.

  46. Exposed brick, dim lighting, and vintage New York photography set a mood that a taxidermied dog in a birthday hat quietly undermines. Confidant is a sharing-plates restaurant in Brooklyn Heights with a menu that runs from scallop crudo and trout mousse to dry-aged meats and a prawn pot pie worth leaning across the table for. 49. The flour tortillas are made with lard and cooked to order, which tells you everything about what kind of place this is. Los Burritos Juárez is a compact burrito shop in Fort Greene doing the El Paso and Ciudad Juárez border style, a regional tradition that barely exists in New York. Slow-cooked guisados go inside, pinto beans tie it together, and breakfast burritos are available until they run out, which they do.

  66. Rank 57. Olmo

    Mexico City

A cantina in Crown Heights where communal tables and light wood make the whole room feel like somebody's relaxed dinner party. The cooking pulls from Mexico City, snacky and nostalgic in the best way, ranging from chicharrón preparado to a carne asada topped with verdolaga greens and a smoky chipotle béarnaise that overshadows everything else on the plate. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

The red door on Moore Street opens into a loud, wood-fired pizza shop that somehow became the definitive argument for Bushwick's whole self-image. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the pies earn the pilgrimage: thin, blistered, unapologetically themselves. 73. A former automotive welding shop in East Williamsburg now houses this multi-roaster coffee boutique, where the menu leans into distilled coffee, blue algae, and clarified matcha alongside a hand-brew selection from roasters around the world. The back of the space runs a small craft brewery called Niteglow, so the afternoon espresso can pivot to a draft pour. It reads like a coffee shop that got very ambitious and kept going.

  79. Rank 84. Agi’s Counter

    Eastern European

The walls are painted cupcake pink, and yes, that is a bowl of Hungarian chicken broth with dumplings on the menu next to the crepes. Named for the chef's grandmother, this Crown Heights diner runs on Eastern European comfort food done with real care. The kitchen has a particular way with bread. The bar landed on Punch's Best New Bartenders list, the restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the chef is a James Beard nominee.

  80. Rank 84. Bagel Pub

    NY-Style Bakery

Stainless steel baskets lined with egg everything and pumpernickel everything tell you all you need to know before you've even ordered. This Crown Heights bagel shop turns out chewy, substantial rounds that hold up to the ambitious sandwich menu, where chipotle-bacon cream cheese and asparagus on a breakfast sandwich feel less weird than they should. The weekend line goes out the door, which at a bagel shop is either a warning or a recommendation, depending on how much you've had to eat.

  81. The pissaladière, a warm round loaf piled with anchovies and caramelized onions, got a callout from the New York Times, which tells you this Prospect Heights all-day cafe is operating above its pay grade. Coffee and breakfast sandwiches up front give way to a skylit atrium with a small bar, handmade pasta, and refined small plates that shift toward a proper dinner by evening. It reads casual; the cooking quietly disagrees.

  82. Rank 84. Ciao, Gloria

    Contemporary Italian Coffee Shop

The pastry case alone could hold up a line: Italian-style cakes, seasonal danishes, oatmeal cream pies, all housemade. This contemporary Italian coffee shop sits at street level of a Frank Gehry condo on Vanderbilt, which sounds like a setup for a joke, but the place is genuinely warm and busy for good reason. Sweetleaf coffee from Queens, a full kitchen running health-ish and comfort food, and staff who seem to actually mean it when they want you to feel at home.

  84. Rank 84. Hart's

    Mediterranean

A skylight, whitewashed brick, and a marble counter with sightlines into a kitchen barely big enough to turn around in, and yet the food coming out of it reads much larger than the room. Hart's is a snug Mediterranean restaurant tucked behind the Franklin Avenue subway stairs, serving the kind of cooking that makes you wonder why anyone needs a big kitchen. The slate-blue façade is easy to miss, which is part of the charm.

  86. The gleaming open kitchen is the first thing you see, all stainless steel and quiet drama, before the eight-course French tasting menu even begins. It started as an underground dinner party circuit, which explains the intimate feel that downtown Brooklyn's fancier arrivals don't quite manage. The team walks you through wine pairings course by course. An AAA Four Diamond restaurant, and the room takes that seriously without making you feel graded.

    Natural Wine Bar

  89. The mission here is explicit: no rainbow bagels, no blueberry bagels, no what Peter Shelsky calls the "shiksa bagel." This Park Slope bagel shop makes small, crust-forward rounds in the New York tradition, though the Sichuan peppercorn bagel, a nod to the long Jewish-Chinese-food alliance, bends the rules just enough. The New York Times named it among the city's best, which is the only endorsement that really matters in this particular argument.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
