  1. Rank 1501. Markette

    Caribbean European

Mirrored walls and moody recessed lighting give this Chelsea restaurant a stage-set quality, and the kitchen leans into it. The menu is short and personal, pulling Caribbean roots through a European frame: salt cod fritters with habanero aioli, braised oxtail under cheddar polenta. A strawberry cheesecake arrives as a Swiss roll, which is either surprising or obvious once you've had it. The cocktail bar runs all night.

  3. Rank 1504. Mawa's Kitchen

    Afro Caribbean

Tucked into an airport business park (yes, really), this contemporary restaurant from a chef who grew up in Côte d'Ivoire brings West African-inflected cooking to a town that usually runs on truffle butter and expense accounts. Wildflower vases, bare tables, and a breezy terrace set an unfussy tone. The food follows: bold spicing, real technique, prices that don't assume you're on a ski-week budget. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2022.

  5. Rank 1506. Wenwen

    Taiwanese

The tall, narrow wood-framed windows let you see the whole room before you walk in, which is a nice preview of a Taiwanese restaurant that doesn't hide anything. Eric Sze and partner Andy Chuang run a menu that moves between popcorn chicken dusted in a sweet-spicy blend and whole striped bass lacquered in black sugar and yuzu, and the beef noodle soup, built on a 16-hour oxtail broth, has a following of its own.

  7. Picnic tables covered in floral oilcloth and a menu that has almost no peer in San Francisco: Prubechu is the city's go-to for Chamorro cooking, the Indigenous cuisine of Guam. The staff will walk you through it happily, from coconut-braised beef noodles to thrice-cooked brisket skewers. Fire up the space heaters on a cool evening and the outdoor patio starts to feel, almost, like somewhere warmer.

  8. Rank 1509. NINE-TEN

    Caribbean

The dining room inside La Jolla's Grande Colonial Hotel is more beach-casual than grand, which suits a crowd that keeps sunglasses on through dinner. Nine-Ten is an elegant restaurant with a Caribbean lean, running from sandwiches and salads at lunch to a tasting menu at dinner that the kitchen calls "mercy of the chef." The pastry program punches above its hotel-restaurant weight, from brunch pastries through a creamsicle dessert worth the wait.

  9. Rank 1510. Zio Peppe

    Sonoran Italian-American Pizzeria

The stone hearth oven sits open to the dining room, so you can watch the pies come together while you wait. This is a casual pizza and pasta spot with a very Tucson idea of Italian-American cooking, blending Sonoran flavors into the repertoire with a straight face. Birria on a pizza, red chile folded into an Alfredo, a cannoli served as a taco. The room runs warm and woody, the vibe is neighborhood, and nothing on the menu takes itself too seriously.

  11. Rank 1511. JL Patisserie

    French Bakery

Kouign-amann and cruffins sharing a case with proper baguettes and macarons sets the tone fast at this French patisserie. The laminated dough is serious, the espresso keeps things moving, and the whole operation closes by two, so the morning crowd treats it with the urgency the pastries deserve. A James Beard Outstanding Bakery semifinalist, JL Patisserie is what happens when French technique finds a permanent home in the desert.

  12. This is a Vietnamese bakery counter tucked inside the Hong Kong City Mall, more prep station than dining room, and it takes cash only. The case is stacked with small snacks, from banana-leaf sausages to rice balls, but the bánh mì đặc biệt is the one people circle back for. It runs about five bucks, which makes ordering two on the first visit more sensible than greedy. It turns up on The Infatuation's list of Houston's Chinatown restaurants.

  13. Toyori is a casual ramen shop on Bellaire Boulevard in Houston's Chinatown, where the dark walls and utilitarian booths hand all the drama to a floor-to-ceiling gold mural. The menu reads a lot like every other ramen menu in the neighborhood, which makes the consistency bowl after bowl the whole trick. The meal ends with a tiny probiotic drink, a small cute gesture that somehow feels like a dessert course.

  14. Rank 1515. chi SPACCA

    Steakhouse Italian

A wood-burning oven does the heavy lifting at this intimate Italian steakhouse tucked into Nancy Silverton's Melrose compound. The kitchen leans hard into live fire and big cuts, with cooking that's boldly seasoned and more seasonal than you'd expect from a place where meat is basically the religion. The wine list runs deep into Italy. Booking is tight, and the room fills fast with people who clearly did not come to order a salad.

  15. Rank 1516. Bistrot Ha

    Vietnamese Bistro

A fish sauce martini is either the best idea you've heard all week or the reason you're leaving, which is a pretty good filter for this Vietnamese-French bistro on Eldridge. The menu swings between leeks vinaigrette with mussels and vol-au-vent loaded with chilis and seafood. Getting a table means arriving before doors open to join the waitlist, which the regulars already knew.

  16. Rank 1517. Mister Mao

    Pan-Asian

The dining room at this Uptown restaurant is painted floor to ceiling in bubblegum pink and emerald green, which turns out to be an accurate preview of the food. The kitchen calls itself "inauthentic," leaning into Asian and Indian flavors with detours wherever it wants, and the results hold a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Weekend brunch draws crowds happy to order everything and share. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2024.

    Caribbean

Jerk chicken wings with pineapple curry sauce set the tone at this African-Caribbean fusion restaurant on Cerrillos Road, a casual, colorful room where the chef's roots on the Kenyan island of Lamu show up in every bowl and skewer. Goat stew in island curry, chicken curry over cumin-scented coconut rice, it all reads like a very specific passport. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod confirm the kitchen punches above its strip-mall setting.

    Seafood

A seafood restaurant in Williamsburg run by a fisherman's son, which shows. The menu leans on familiar territory but keeps swerving: surf clam in aguachile, mussels that are genuinely plush, squid that's properly charred. Then dessert arrives and a Basque cheesecake shows up funked with taleggio. The New York Times gave it two stars and a spot on their Restaurant List, which for a room this unpretentious in Maujer St feels about right.

  20. Rank 1521. Thanh Long

    Vietnamese

Dungeness crab in a bib is the great equalizer, and Thanh Long has been proving that since before most of its regulars were born. This Outer Sunset Vietnamese restaurant built its reputation on roast crab drowned in butter and garlic, served with noodles that are non-negotiably part of the order. The garlic situation borders on theatrical, which is exactly the point. An old-school institution that still packs the room on any given night.

  21. Rank 1522. Boonie's

    Filipino

Every time someone lifts the lid on the rice cooker, garlic fills this narrow Filipino restaurant on Western and essentially announces the whole menu's priorities. Started as a food stall, it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod. Pork runs the show in several forms, steelhead trout swims in tamarind broth for balance, and the deep-fried plantain spring roll dusted in brown sugar is the kind of dessert that reframes what dessert can be.

  23. This is a seafood restaurant dressed like an Old Hollywood set, with a raw bar and a caviar service whose sturgeon eggs come from fish the chef raised himself. The menu keeps one eye on the Gulf, with redfish, grouper, and a clam chowder that means it. The bar has a Golden Martini from Esquire, so a drink first is only prudent. Expect to dress like someone might photograph you, because someone will.

  24. Rank 1524. Squable

    European

The French cheeseburger blanketed in raclette has its own reputation in this city, which tells you something about the mood at this Heights neighborhood restaurant. European-inspired comfort food anchors the menu, which shifts with the seasons, running from chicken liver pate and crudo through to roast chicken and pasta. The chef landed a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2024, and the Houston Chronicle put Squable at number two on its top 100 list.

  25. Fresh tortillas pressed in-house from corn nixtamalized the same morning set the tone at this lively Mexican cantina on The Alameda. The kitchen sources Rancho Gordo beans and makes its chorizo and salsas from scratch, so the menu earns the acronym on the sign. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it draws a mixed crowd of vegans and carnivores alike, the latter occasionally ordering the smoky, extravagant mixed grill tower. A full bar and open-air patio round it out.

  26. Rank 1527. Warda Pâtisserie

    Modern Bakery

Warda Bouguettaya won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef in 2022, and her understated cafe on West Alexandrine is where that makes sense. Warda Pâtisserie is the kind of patisserie where the tarts are architectural and the bread smells like someone actually cares. Bistro seating if you want to linger over a latte, takeaway boxes if you don't. Detroit didn't exactly have a shortage of opinions, but this one is quiet and confident about it.

Doris Metropolitan is a steakhouse that dry-ages its ribeye in-house and then slides Middle Eastern sides next to it, so the tahini salad and the harissa carrots get equal billing with the beef. The crust is blistered and chewy in the right proportions. Substitutions on the Neapolitan pies are not allowed, which will sort the room into people who appreciate that and people who ask anyway.

Bulalo, the clear beef shank soup, is the centerpiece, and Melissa Miranda's kitchen pulls it off with enough technique to make a simple bowl feel considered. The pancit, the lumpia, the sinigang wings, all travel well in the same direction. The New York Times has named it among Seattle's 25 best.

  79. Olive-green velvet booths, a room that hums with the particular energy of people who might be somebody, and martinis that make a two-hour lunch feel like a reasonable life choice. Stephen Starr revived this old Washington institution near the White House into a full-service American restaurant with a menu that leans classic without apology: French dip, lobster bisque, oysters in beurre blanc. The champagne layer cake arrives frosted in pink, which somehow feels correct.

Large metal bowls of steaming pho arrive trailing the scent of anise, and the broth is sweet enough that people come back for it the way some people return to a therapist. The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
