  1. Rank 1301. Ama

    Northern Italian

Northern Italian restaurant in Navy Yard that shapeshifts across the day: coffee and focaccia in the morning, aperitivo hour by four, and a full convivial dinner by night. The chef draws on her own northern Italian heritage, so the menu has the kind of specificity that comes from memory rather than research. The James Beard Awards named the chef a 2026 semifinalist for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  2. Rank 1302. Tonino

    Italian

Twenty-eight seats in Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood that has somehow gotten by without Italian restaurants until now. Tonino is a pasta-and-pizza spot where the chef's whole philosophy seems to be finding a handful of good ingredients and then leaving them mostly alone. The tiramisù has built a devoted following. A James Beard semifinalist and on the New York Times' 25 best in Boston, it reads like someone's favorite neighborhood secret that stopped being secret.

  3. The dining room juts out from the Mt. Washington cliff face, so the three rivers appear to be directly below your table, which is a lot to process when you're deciding between apps. Altius is upscale American fine dining with portions that are, refreshingly, sized for actual humans. They seat you with warm popcorn before anything else, a small signal that the room won't make you feel guilty for enjoying yourself. AAA Four Diamonds.

  4. Rank 1303. Cowboy Star

    American

Cowboy Star is a downtown steakhouse that goes all in on the Western set dressing, with cowhide chairs, a steer skull on the wall, and a door handle shaped like a giant spur. It holds an AAA Four Diamond rating, so the evening runs more tablecloth than saloon. Order a ribeye, but save room for the bronzed Parker House rolls, then talk yourself out of the mechanical bull nearby.

  5. Rank 1303. L'opossum

    French

A stained glass window of, let's say, assertive subject matter sets the tone before you've ordered a thing. L'Opossum is a fine dining room where French technique meets full-on theatrical excess, the kind of place that serves lobster mac and cheese under a name like "swank bank" and wraps a cocktail in plastic like a certain *Twin Peaks* corpse. The bathroom is clowns. All of it is intentional, and somehow it holds together.

  6. The line outside on Sunday mornings tells you what kind of place this is before you even read the menu. A Southern breakfast institution in Inglewood, The Serving Spoon draws the post-church crowd in numbers that would alarm a fire marshal, all coming for pancakes that arrive buried under butter and maple syrup. A 2026 James Beard America's Classics winner, it's been a neighborhood anchor for decades and shows no sign of quieting down.

  7. Pressed tin ceiling, globe lights, and worn wood floors set the mood at this seafood restaurant on South 20th, where the menu stays tight enough that everything on it feels deliberate. The raw bar anchors the room, oysters and scallops up front, while the gumbo pulls in lobster, crab, and Carolina gold rice. Grab a seat at the back bar if you can, the chefs are right there. 8. Rank 1308. San Tung

    Chinese

San Tung is a Chinese spot on Irving Street where the fried chicken wings, sticky and sweet and shatteringly crisp, show up on nearly every table in a dining room that's always full. The noise level forgives toddlers and tired grown-ups alike. Order a few plates of wings up front, since one round never survives a family-sized table, and expect to wait for a seat.

    New American

The "Laundromat" sign from the old tenant is still up out front, which means half the neighborhood has walked past a very good French bistro without knowing it. Inside, brick walls and vintage furniture set a mood that feels broken-in rather than designed, and the menu leans on Northeast ingredients for a modern French run through small plates and proper mains. Greenpoint regulars who've found it tend not to share the address.

  10. Bookshelves, wine bottles, and houseplants do most of the decorating at this cozy West Asheville wine bar, which manages to feel like someone's living room without feeling precious about it. Coffee and breakfast sandwiches run through the morning; evenings pivot to oysters, crudo, and a glass of something natural. A James Beard Semifinalist for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program, it draws the kind of regulars who never seem to be in a hurry to leave.

Sunlit, laptop-scattered, and full of potted plants in all the ways you'd expect from a third-wave coffee shop, except this one roasts Vietnamese specialty beans and serves bánh mì stuffed with pork meatballs in tangy tomato sauce on Ba Le Bakery bread. The drink menu wanders into fizzy espresso tonics with housemade watermelon syrup. A James Beard semifinalist for its beverages, and on the New York Times list of Philadelphia's top restaurants.

  12. El Bagel is a Biscayne Boulevard bagel shop where the line out the door is part of the architecture. The bagels come out blistered and bubbly on the crust, then get stuffed and wrapped tight in parchment, which is how a Miami bagel ends up with guava in it. Bon Appétit once declared these among the very best in the country, outside New York, a distinction New Yorkers will note and then ignore.

    French-Italian Cajun & Creole

The table by the window on St. Charles is the one to request, and once you're in it you'll understand why this place has been around forever. It's a full-service restaurant where French and Italian instincts run through Cajun and Creole cooking without apology or explanation. The house-made spaghetti fills tables every night, and the duck confit with dirty rice keeps people coming back.

  15. Rank 1313. Osteria Ester

    Italian-American Osteria

Gnocco fritto, the puffy Italian fry bread, sets the tone at this Thornton Park osteria: comfort classics with a little attitude. The Italian-American menu runs chicken parm alongside house-made pastas and truffle arancini, all in a room that manages to feel both stylish and genuinely relaxed. A 2025 James Beard nominee for Outstanding Restaurateur, and a Michelin selected spot that draws a neighborhood crowd who treat it like their personal dining room.

  16. Rank 1313. Sparrow

    Spanish

Low plush chairs, patterned tiles, and booths that encourage you to stay another glass make this Downtown Orlando wine bar feel like an evening rather than just dinner. The menu leans Spanish and European, and the chef draws on family recipes for much of it, which gives the food a specificity that generic "European" usually doesn't. A 2025 James Beard nominee for Outstanding Restaurateur runs the room, and it shows.

  17. Rank 1313. The Fishery

    Seafood

A working seafood market sits at the center of the dining room, which tells you everything about what ends up on the plate. This casual Pacific Beach seafood restaurant occupies a restored mid-century warehouse, and the menu follows whatever came off the boat, including house-made fettuccine with locally caught San Diego rock crab. The Michelin Guide has it on their radar, and the crowd skews toward regulars who know to skip the menu and ask what's freshest.

  18. Rank 1318. Mesa Provisions

    Southwestern American

Duck fat tortillas arrive alongside a smoked half chicken dressed in red chile and pepita crema, which tells you what kind of American cooking this Nob Hill restaurant is doing. The chef draws on Southwestern flavors without turning the menu into a tourism brochure, and a James Beard nomination for Best Chef: Southwest followed accordingly. The room is quiet enough that you can hear yourself change your order after the food arrives at the next table.

  19. Vintage Vegas glamour gets a quiet update at this steakhouse inside the Circa Resort, where the chef behind Scotch 80 Prime brings a recognizable hand to the Downtown corridor. The menu runs classic prime cuts but keeps slipping in detours: lobster and shrimp potstickers, short rib with harissa, tater tots finished with poutine gravy. The crowd skews loyal, the kind who followed the chef here from his last room and haven't opened the menu in months.

  20. Rank 1320. Blood Bros. BBQ

    Texas Barbecue

Gochujang-glazed ribs sit a few trays down from the brisket at this Bellaire BBQ shop, which is pretty much the thesis statement. The three childhood friends behind Blood Bros. grew up in Alief absorbing Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, and Mexican flavors alongside Texas smoke, and the menu shows it. The daily specials change constantly, so the table next to yours will almost always have something you didn't order. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard nominee.

  22. Old Salt Outpost is a casual burger counter on Last Chance Gulch with a menu so short it barely counts as one. The smash patties come with pickles and onions and nothing else, browned nearly to blackened and soaked in tallow, from beef raised on Montana ranches. The Infatuation has put it on its lists of the best burgers and the best potato dishes in America, the latter for the hand broken potatoes.

  23. A European restaurant tucked into the Melrose District's Wagon Wheel building, where the back patio's twinkle lights and two-top tables make the whole thing feel like a date you actually planned. The menu changes with the seasons and you can do a five-course tasting or just pull a bottle from the adjoining wine shop and order à la carte. A James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Southwest.

    Californian Southeast Asian

This Mission small-plates spot draws on Southeast Asian and Vietnamese flavors and bends them through a California lens, with a rooftop drowning in plants and a cocktail list that leans tropical. The Michelin Guide named it a Bib Gourmand. Reservations fill fast, but the bar usually has room for walk-ins willing to show up early.

  25. Rank 1326. Gallaghers

    Steakhouse

The dry-aging locker runs along the front window so you see the USDA Prime slabs before you even open the door, which is a very Gallaghers way of setting expectations. This old-school Midtown steakhouse has been around forever, and the walls of jockey photos and the rolling dessert cart are not ironic. Hickory-grilled steaks, creamed spinach, a bar that hums, and a menu that still winks at Prohibition. Ranked among the World's Best Steak Restaurants.

  26. Tortillas made on-site and griddled all day set the tone at this counter-service taqueria tucked into Finn Hall in downtown Houston. The chicharrón, cured pork belly with pumpkin seed vinaigrette and crispy shallots, is the kind of thing you think about later. Breakfast tacos and a cult carrot taco round out a menu that's more considered than the food-hall setting suggests. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  29. Rank 1330. Kira

    Sushi

Kira is a 15-seat hand roll bar in Upper Kirby built around a McIntosh stereo and a stack of vinyl, so the soundtrack gets a seat at the counter, too. You order everything up front and the rolls, crudo, and donburi just keep arriving, with a Suntory highball tower nearby and hand-cranked shaved ice to finish. Texas Monthly ranked it among the state's best new restaurants, and the lighting suggests you're probably cooler than you were at six.

  30. Eight seats and a cypress bar is the whole room, and the quiet that settles over it mid-meal is the kind that happens when people are paying close attention. This San Mateo omakase counter serves Edomae sushi built on fish flown in from Toyosu, with curing and aging doing quiet work before a single piece of nigiri lands in front of you. Chef Akira Yoshizumi honed the style across Japan and New York, and the precision shows.

  31. A U-shaped bar anchors this Danish coffee shop, where streamlined taps for cold drinks share space with a proper V60 setup and a counter lined with pastries worth stopping for. La Cabra built a following in Copenhagen before planting roots on the Lower East Side, and the East Village original still draws a crowd that treats croissants and a carefully pulled espresso as a reasonable reason to leave the house.

  32. Rank 1333. Ken

    Omakase Japanese

Six seats behind an unmarked door on Divisadero, Ken is the kind of omakase counter that rewards people who actually read their texts. The chef, a Hong Kong native who came up at respected Bay Area sushi bars, runs a menu that moves between classic nigiri and composed small plates, with cured egg yolk and preserved plum showing up where you'd least expect them. Unhurried, quiet, and booked well in advance.

  39. Tucked into the wooded edge of Sonoma wine country, this fine dining restaurant earns its pastoral name without trying too hard. The kitchen leans into California's seasonal obsessions with real conviction, running a compact prix fixe alongside a longer tasting menu. Herb-laminated pasta, foraged mushrooms, Vietnamese-inflected black cod, the menu reads like a love letter to the region. The drive out from Santa Rosa is part of the deal, and nobody here seems to mind.

  42. The oxtail Italian beef sandwich, melting with cheese and spiked with giardiniera, tells you right away what kind of chef is running this upscale New American kitchen. Hush is an intimate room in a Scottsdale strip mall, open kitchen sending smells out front, nostalgic rock at a volume that invites conversation. The menu shifts often, but the kitchen's touch with vegetables, fish, and meat stays constant. Reservations through Tock are a smart move.

  43. Rank 1344. Pietramala

    Vegetarian Italian

The open kitchen takes up half the dining room at this cozy vegan restaurant in Northern Liberties, which runs on foraged produce, small local suppliers, and the chef's own ferments and preserves. This romantic neighborhood restaurant is tucked into a house off a gravel path in a way that makes even locals double-check the address. The feel is a dinner party at a well-traveled friend's place, the food seasonally European and quietly confident. Booking ahead is wise; guessing the menu is the game.

  45. Rank 1345. Ox Restaurant

    Argentine

The open live-fire grill runs the length of the kitchen and puts on a show whether you book a counter seat or not. This Argentine-inflected steakhouse has been an institution on MLK forever, with Greg Denton and Gabrielle Quiñónez Denton behind the flames. The asado is built for at least two people and their ambitions. The chowder, meanwhile, arrives with a smoked marrow bone floating in it, which tells you everything about the kitchen's sense of humor.

  46. A converted 1920s bank building on King Street, with soaring ceilings, white tile, and black wood that lands somewhere between Parisian brasserie and Charleston old money. The menu calls itself "fancy seafood," which is honest: this is a full-on seafood brasserie where the oysters are slurped cold and the crab toast is the kind of thing that makes ordering seem easy. The kitchen handles beautiful product with a light hand and doesn't overcomplicate it.

  48. Bobby Stuckey, the master sommelier behind Denver's Frasca, brought his Italian restaurant to the Four Seasons Vail, and the town's reservation lines have never been the same. This is elegant, unhurried Northern Italian dining: handmade pasta, bistecca, and an all-Italian wine list curated with the kind of seriousness you'd expect from someone who also co-owns a Friuli winery. The wine window built into the wall is either charming or absurd, possibly both.

  49. Butter shows up in the cocktails here, which tells you most of what you need to know. Bon Délire is a French bistro on the Embarcadero with a horseshoe bar, a minimalist room, and a hip-hop soundtrack that would confuse your grandmother in the best possible way. The menu runs classic, croque madame and steak frites, with madeleines baked to order for dessert. Sunday brunch brings a DJ, which is either absurd or perfect depending on your mood.

Scarlet curtains climbing toward the ceiling set the scene at this Tao Group steakhouse in Chelsea, where the room commits fully to the bit. Melissa Rodriguez runs the kitchen, and the custom grill sears cuts edge to edge while a long roster of vegetable sides keeps things honest. The desserts punch well above the steakhouse average. A thoughtful wine list and servers who actually know how to pace a table round out the package.

The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
