  2. Rank 1101. MeeshMeesh Mediterranean

    Eastern Mediterranean

The hummus comes with schug, herb tehina, and enough conviction to make every other hummus in town feel like it needs to apologize. This is a casual Eastern Mediterranean restaurant drawing from Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Israel, with a menu that roams widely and settles nowhere predictable. The chef behind it earned a James Beard nomination for Best Chef Southeast. Come hungry enough for babka.

  3. Rank 1103. Maydān

    Middle Eastern

The open hearth at the center of this Middle Eastern restaurant burns hot enough that you can feel it from across the room, which is by design. Everything here runs through that fire, from the flatbreads to the meats, and the kitchen's control of it is something to watch. Spreads, vegetables, and grilled proteins arrive in a relaxed progression, and the Middle Eastern wine and spirits list is a serious one. On The Washington Post's 40 best D.C. restaurants.

  4. Rank 1104. Vecino

    Modern Mexican

The masa section of the menu says a lot about a modern Mexican restaurant: handmade enchiladas, tostadas, tetelas, each one built with the care of someone who grew up arguing about corn. Vecino sits in Midtown with a warm, spare interior and a menu that pulls from Mexico City and Oaxaca without apology. Esquire named it one of America's best new restaurants in 2024, and it landed a James Beard semifinalist nod the following year.

  5. Deborah VanTrece's modern Southern restaurant in a Westside industrial strip is the kind of place where the bar program is as serious as the kitchen, a James Beard semifinalist on both counts. The menu takes the food your grandmother made and runs it somewhere she probably didn't, with collard dip alongside pimento cheese fondue and fried chicken arriving with a collard green roll. The New York Times put it on their Atlanta list, and the room earns the attention.

  6. A neighborhood house on the Eastside that seats you like a dinner guest, not a diner. Bintü Atelier serves West African cooking with a Gullah Geechee thread running through it, okra and local fish sharing the menu with shito crab rice and groundnut stew. The menu is short enough that tables tend to order most of it and share. It's BYOB for anything alcoholic, but fresh soursop and passionfruit juice soften the blow. Named a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast.

  8. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over a pond, which sets the mood before the tasting menu even begins. This is polished fine dining in Falls Church, the kind where the monthly French-inflected menu chases both the season and chef Bertrand Chemel's restless imagination. Five courses, and you choose at each one, with vegetarian and meat paths running in parallel. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist in 2024.

    Mexican

Flour tortillas wrapped tight in foil are the move at this fast-casual breakfast taco counter in Mt. Pleasant, which grew out of a pop-up and earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand doing it. The menu is short on purpose: coffee, soft scrambled eggs, creamy pinto beans, chorizo, brisket, and queso. No reservations, no long-term planning required. Come with a hangover or come without one; either way, the tacos will sort things out.

  11. A massive, custom-built pit dominates the backyard of this East Austin BBQ shop, and the line that snakes toward it on any given afternoon is its own kind of argument. The brisket arrives at the counter still warm enough to stop you mid-sentence, and the house-made sausages and ribs don't ask permission either. Tammy Wynette on the speakers, kimchi and chipotle slaw in the case. La Barbecue holds a Michelin star.

  12. Rank 1112. Little Fish

    Asian-Influenced Seafood

A BYOB fine dining room in Bella Vista small enough that the handwritten menus feel like personal notes from the kitchen. The chef's Asian-influenced seafood changes with the seasons, leaning into combinations that sound odd on paper and make obvious sense on the plate. Bring a bottle, settle in, and let the prix fixe do the work. A 2025 James Beard Outstanding Hospitality semifinalist, which tracks for a room this attentive.

  13. A chicken rice shop on Airport Boulevard where the whole birds go through a poaching-to-ice-bath-to-hang-dry process that makes the skin pull taut and the meat collapse at the knife. The cooking traces back to Chinese immigrants who brought their techniques to Thailand and rewired them with bolder flavors. The chef landed on the 2025 New York Times Restaurant List and is a 2026 James Beard semifinalist. Seven house sauces come with; order all of them.

  14. Rank 1114. Cafe Olli

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas come out gently charred, topped with whatever the Pacific Northwest is doing well that week. Cafe Olli is a pizza and brunch spot on MLK that also runs a serious bread and pastry program out of the adjoining bakery. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list and the chef landed a James Beard semifinalist nod, which tracks for a neighborhood place that treats zucchini and peaches like they have something to prove.

  15. Rank 1115. Illata

    Creative Italian

A twenty-seat BYOB in Grays Ferry where the menu runs fewer than a dozen small plates, almost all of them seafood-leaning and swapped out with the seasons. The kitchen pairs familiar things in ways that quietly surprise you, carrots with crab, mussels over miso and chili oil. Bring something good to drink, because the food asks for it, and book ahead, because twenty seats go fast.

  16. Rank 1116. 5 Points

    American

A large indoor tree grows through the middle of the dining room, which tells you most of what you need to know about this market-cafe's vibe. Exposed brick, globe pendants, and shelves of natural wine fill the rest. Started as a brunch anchor, it has since added a dinner menu that leans seasonal. The crowd arriving on weekend mornings tends to look like they slept well and brought a book.

    French

The line wrapping around the Fort Greene corner is not a glitch; it's just how things work at April Bloomfield's neighborhood seafood bistro, where eggs with celery salt and a roast chicken somehow outshine the obvious Instagram moment. The skylit room is bright and unhurried, the menu turns with the seasons, and lunch earns its own following with a burger that regulars treat as a state secret.

  19. Rank 1119. Fù Huì Huá

    Huaiyang Sushi

Eight seats, eight seatings a week, and a reservation list that moves like continental drift. Fù Huì Huá is an omakase counter on 24th Street where a father-son team serves a tasting menu rooted in Huaiyang cuisine, shaped by time in Shanghai and Japan. The format reads kaiseki; the food is entirely Chinese. The San Francisco Chronicle ranked it among the top ten restaurants in the Bay Area.

  20. This is a family-run Basque spot on Main Street where the sausage does most of the talking, in bocadillos and appetizers, with chorizo you can also take home by the pound. The menu mixes old-country standards with newer moves like beef tongue in tomato and pepper sauce. They cater too, so your next office party could finally have a point. The Ansotegui family has been in Basque Boise a long time, and the chef was a James Beard Best Chef: Mountain semifinalist in 2024.

  21. Rank 1121. Mandolin Aegean Bistro

    Eastern Mediterranean

The blue door and whitewashed facade in Miami's Design District look like someone shipped a Greek island courtyard over wholesale, and the interior mostly confirms it: mature trees, orchids, and ceiling fans shading wood tables outdoors. This mezze-heavy Mediterranean bistro earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand on small plates, baked feta, and grilled fish, with house bread arriving in little paper bags. The honey pie with salted shortbread crust is the reason to save room.

  22. Rank 1122. Aga's

    Pan-Asian

A banquet hall moonlighting as a Pakistani-Indian restaurant, and the goat chops have made it to the New York Times. The dining room fills fast at lunch with big family-style spreads: kebabs, biryani, curries, and those charred chops that everyone orders. The service keeps pace even when the room is packed to the walls, which it usually is. Bullet naan seasoned with jalapeños and cilantro is a quiet reason to skip the rice entirely.

  25. Salt-and-pepper-crusted brisket smoked in the Austin tradition is the reason people line up at this Lincoln Heights barbecue shop. What started as a weekend backyard hobby grew into a proper room with a craft beer bar to keep you company while you wait. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record, and the James Beard committee has taken notice too. Come early; things sell out, and "we ran out" is the one review nobody wants.

  26. The reservation line forms before doors open, which tells you everything about the temperature of this contemporary Indian restaurant inside the Aria. The room is all velvet and low light, the service is composed, and the kitchen pulls from street-food traditions without being precious about it. Curries are built for sharing and arrive bold enough to hold the table's attention, even by Las Vegas standards.

  27. The whole room is named after a dog, which tells you something about the energy here. Mabel's is an upscale-casual seafood spot in North Park where the menu leans into California-meets-Iberia, raw oysters and crudos on one end, swordfish schnitzel with salsa verde and tonnato on the other. Natural wines and gin cocktails fill the gaps. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and Esquire called it one of the best new restaurants in America.

  28. A refurbished car wash with vendors in the old bays is an unlikely home for some of the most focused cooking in Nashville. S.S. Gai is a chicken house with a single obsession: Thai street-style fried chicken, crispy in that way that makes you slow down and pay attention, served with sticky rice and tamarind chili fish sauce. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a New York Times nod suggest the obsession is well-placed. Order at the window and don't skip the mango sticky rice.

Persian crispy rice arrives with egg yolks that make sharing a genuine moral dilemma. Kismet is a casual Middle Eastern restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard where seasonal vegetables and bright flavors run the show, and nothing on the table feels heavy. The Michelin Bib Gourmand room draws a Los Feliz crowd that looks like they biked here and also know exactly what they're ordering. The staff matches the energy perfectly.

  30. Rank 1130. Lewis Barbecue

    Texas Barbecue

A mural of a steer over the parking lot reads "All Hail the King," which tells you everything about the mood inside this Texas-style BBQ shop in Charleston. John Lewis made his name at LA Barbecue in Austin, and the brisket he slices to order at the counter explains why. Picnic tables on a gravel patio, firewood stacked ceiling-high, and a permanent haze of smoke round out the scene. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand.

  31. The kitchen sends out a warm bite the moment you sit down, and it sets the tone for everything that follows at this creative fine dining spot in Audubon Park. Chef Tim Lovero runs an ever-changing shared plates menu where dessert might arrive as panna cotta with cocoa nibs and actual French fries, which sounds chaotic and somehow isn't. A Michelin Bib Gourmand for a room this inventive feels almost cheeky.

  33. This is a 20-seat Thai restaurant behind an unmarked door that gives off abandoned-7-Eleven energy, with scotch-taped wallpaper inside and a kitchen that serves spicy food until 2am every night. The wine list is a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, heavy on Riesling for putting out the fire. Off-duty sommeliers and chefs fill the room, which tells you where the industry eats after its own shift.

  34. The menu at this tiny taco shop on Pulaski is exactly one thing: birria, slow-stewed goat, served bone-in or bone-out, on a plate with handmade corn tortillas or drowning in a bowl of rich consommé. That's it. The bone-in is the move, and the quesadilla is the move you make when no one's watching. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a room where nobody's there to be seen.

  35. Rank 1135. Roots Southern Table

    Modern Southern

The open kitchen gives you a view of the whole operation, and it runs with what looks like choreographed precision. Tiffany Derry's modern Southern restaurant in Farmers Branch earns James Beard nominations alongside regulars who could probably recite the menu cold. Duck fat-fried chicken is the calling card, the gumbo is serious, and the cast-iron cornbread arrives first for good reason. Dressy-casual, suburban, and worth the drive from anywhere in Dallas.

  36. Rank 1136. Starship Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

  37. Fratesi's is a neighborhood pizzeria, the kind that feels like it's been on the corner since before you were born, even though it landed in downtown Miami fairly recently. The bar pies come out so thin they look drawn on, with cheese all the way to the edge, which leaves crust-skeptics with nothing to complain about. Stained glass lamps hang over springy booths, and the tahini caesar is the one salad people will order on purpose.

  38. Rank 1138. Apteka

    Vegan Eastern European

Potato pierogi with czarna salsa is the kind of detail that stops you mid-sentence. Apteka is a vegan sit-down restaurant in Bloomfield riffing on Central and Eastern European cooking, and the menu reads like someone's Polish grandmother went fully plant-based and never looked back. The homemade cordials and tinctures are their own thing, worth ordering slowly. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  39. Rank 1139. Cuantos Tacos

    Mexico City-style

The suadero taco here, finished with nothing but onion and cilantro, is what draws a line to this East Austin food truck. The meat cooks in a traditional chorizera pan, and the bright yellow masa tortillas come out paper-thin and full of flavor. Mexico City-style is the whole brief, kept tight. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a New York Times pick. Order at the window, find a spot in the shared picnic area, and don't skip the grilled onions.

Honey Salt is a bright, farmhouse-style Summerlin restaurant where brunch involves bottomless Bloody Marys and mimosas, plus a mocktail list so earnest it includes a green juice that makes Pilates feel plausible. Monkey bread arrives for the table, sticky and iced, and disappears in a way that suggests nobody read the portion sizes. Dress is nice-casual, the kind where the linen shirt is doing real work.

This Palms pizzeria is the grown-up version of a beloved Pico-Robertson original, now with a proper sit-down dining room and a menu that stretches to supplì and broccolini with bagna cauda. 48. Rank 1147. Mirabelle

    French

A century-old ranch house just outside Beaver Creek Resort, and the chef's family actually lives there, which goes a long way toward explaining why this French fine dining room feels less like a white-tablecloth performance and more like someone's very well-fed home. The European-trained kitchen leans into generous portions and old-school indulgences, with a dessert course the menu treats as non-negotiable. Dress up a little; the room earns it.

  49. Dover sole filleted tableside is the kind of move that makes the name feel earned. Splendido is a fine dining room in the Beaver Creek area where the menu runs from pomegranate-marinated Colorado lamb to a chocolate and peanut butter pavé, threading a line between creative and classically comfortable. Service is warm and attentive without being stiff. The crowd tends toward après-ski celebration mode, and the room is happy to oblige.

The chef, a James Beard semifinalist with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, builds bowls that swing between classical Japanese technique and flat-out invention, the kind of menu where the dish names alone tip you off that things are going to get interesting. Order ramen, then maybe the blistered shishitos while you wait for the second bowl you'll talk yourself into.

  53. The khao soi here arrives in a shade of marigold so vivid it looks like a color swatch, topped with a tangle of fried noodles over chicken that's been cooked into submission. This Northern Thai restaurant in Mount Vernon Square skips the pad see ew and the crowd-pleasing standards entirely, leaning into the regional cooking the chef built her reputation on. The New York Times put it on their D.C. list, and the room fills up accordingly.

  56. The menu at this Italian-Japanese restaurant is built around itameshi, a tradition of weaving the two cuisines together, which here means gyoza-shaped ravioli in a brown butter demi-glace and tagliolini with mentaiko and shiso. The team behind the ramen bar Koyoté landed on the New York Times Restaurant List and a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant, which, for a place in a strip-mall suite, is a conversation.

  57. The fry bread here comes out puffy and golden, stuffed with ground beef and beans or finished with chocolate, and it gives the whole menu its name. This family-run Tohono O'odham restaurant has been an anchor in Phoenix's Melrose District long before the neighborhood got interesting, serving tacos, stews, and tostadas alongside it. It's a no-frills bar and seafood spot where the team applies a firm philosophy: impeccably sourced shellfish needs little beyond a squeeze of lemon to do its job. The oysters come from the general manager's family farm, which is either charming or unfair competition, depending on how you look at it. The New York Times and the LA Times have both taken notice.

Dinner runs north of $400 a head, so dress like someone who has already made peace with the bill. The biscuits are fluffy enough to scoop up chorizo gravy, and the pancakes get a toasty note from malted milk powder. Coffee is a quarter a cup and refilled before you ask, though the cold brew specials are the smarter order. Cheap, cozy, and best before noon.

This Greenwich Village bagel shop forgoes the plastic knife entirely: you rip, you dip into one of several cream cheeses pulled straight from the fridge, and that's the deal. The bagels run smaller and darker than the New York standard, which will either bother you or convert you. The New York Times and Eater have both put it on their short lists, so the line is rarely short.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
