  6. The pitmaster here started as a chocolatier, which is either the strangest origin story in Texas barbecue or proof that obsessive patience translates across crafts. This Tomball smokehouse draws lines out the door before it opens, with prime brisket and chile relleno sausage coming off pits stacked beside a cord of wood. The carrot soufflé, improbably, holds its own alongside everything else. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and pre-orders are available if you'd rather not wait on the porch.

  7. Rank 2306. The Chuckbox

    Burger Joint

Somewhere between a diner and a log cabin, this cash-only Tempe burger shop has been grilling patties over a live mesquite fire since forever. You order at the counter while the smoke does its thing, then dress your own burger at the condiment table. Sizes run from a modest fifth-pounder up to a full pound of beef, which should cover most life situations. An old-school Valley institution, and the zucchini fries are not optional.

  8. The oak-and-charcoal grill doing steady work on Ibérico pork and whole fish is a reasonable argument for why this Spanish restaurant inside a food hall draws a serious crowd. The chef, an alum of José Andrés's Minibar, runs the room with a light touch: tapas at the bar, big shared platters for the table, and a Basque cheesecake that regulars treat as non-negotiable. The patio helps on good days.

  9. Rank 2309. Mezquite

    Sonoran

Paper-thin flour tortillas arrive with a spread of grilled onion, toreado chili, and black garlic before any protein lands on the table, which tells you where this place is coming from. Mezquite is a Sonoran Mexican restaurant inside Pullman Market, sun-bleached decor and all, serving the hyper-regional cooking of the Sonoran desert rather than anything resembling Tex-Mex. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  12. Rank 2312. Antico Pizza Napoletana

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The menu lives on a sign above the counter, and you decide on your pizza before you've even found a seat at the communal tables. This cavernous Neapolitan pizza shop shares its dining room with the prep kitchen, so you watch the dough get shaped and slid into one of three wood-fired ovens while you wait. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on 50 Top Pizza USA, which tracks for a place that draws lines in a strip-mall parking lot.

  13. Rank 2312. Sho Pizza Bar

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The name comes from "shokunin," a Japanese word for total devotion to a craft, which tells you something about how seriously Sean Brock takes his pizza. This Neapolitan slice spot in Riverside Village has a domed wood-fired oven imported from Italy and a glass-walled prep area where you can clock exactly where the cheese and cured meats came from. The crust is cold-fermented slow and bakes up light enough that you'll order a second. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  14. Rank 2314. Apteka

    Vegan Eastern European

Potato pierogi with czarna salsa is the kind of detail that stops you mid-sentence. Apteka is a vegan sit-down restaurant in Bloomfield riffing on Central and Eastern European cooking, and the menu reads like someone's Polish grandmother went fully plant-based and never looked back. The homemade cordials and tinctures are their own thing, worth ordering slowly. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  15. Rank 2315. Distant Relatives

    New-School Barbecue

Damien Brockway runs a BBQ truck parked at Meanwhile Brewing, and the cooking draws on African diaspora traditions in ways that make the usual brisket-and-sausage spread feel like a starting point rather than the whole story. Pecan-smoked chicken and nose-to-tail restraint sit alongside rotating sides that shift the genre somewhere new. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and Brockway is a James Beard semifinalist. Come early, bring patience, leave with extra napkins.

  16. Wood-fired pizza in a Little River spot that feels like a party someone forgot to announce, concrete floors, dim lighting, and a natural wine list long enough to make you forget you came for the pizza. The pies come out of a wood-burning oven behind the bar with char that means it, and the crust cold-ferments for two days before it ever meets a topping. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Reservations are a good idea.

  17. Rank 2321. Uchi

    Japanese

Tyson Cole's Austin-born Japanese fine dining concept has colonized Old Town Scottsdale, and the food makes it hard to resent the expansion. The menu runs well past sashimi and nigiri into tempura, grilled meats, and crudo, and you can order à la carte, build a tasting menu with your server, or hand over full control with an omakase. The room runs on polished service and the kind of care that makes a chain feel like a local obsession.

  18. A Vietnamese restaurant in a Las Vegas Chinatown strip mall that earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by doing exactly what it says on the tin. The steamed rice rolls arrive buried under fried onions, the turmeric crepes come with enough fresh herbs to reforest a small country, and the bún bò huế is the kind of broth that makes you sit up straight. Everything is made to order, which means it arrives hot, and portions run large enough that you'll want company.

  19. Detroit-style pizza with a self-described tagline of "pretty good pizza," which is either very honest or very good marketing. The ultra-thick, crispy-edged pies come from a pandemic pop-up that grew into a permanent spot, and the narrow space flows out to a sidewalk parklet. The drinks menu is almost entirely under ten dollars, with wine notes like "kissing a guy with a mustache." The New York Times named it among Seattle's 25 best restaurants right now.

  20. A Midtown hotel where the food obsession is baked into the architecture, not just the restaurant name. Butcher block wood, brushed metal, and food-focused art run through the rooms without tipping into theme-park territory. The Epicurean Theatre is the draw: a proper professional kitchen where guests book wine workshops, charcuterie classes, and chocolate tastings. The High Museum and Piedmont Park are both walkable, which helps justify the address.

  21. The Greek Revival mansion a short walk from UT Austin has been a boutique hotel for a while now, but it has been many things longer. The original lady of the house, Ella Wooten, spent decades turning what was an ordinary estate into something considerably less ordinary, and the place has been coasting on her taste ever since. A calm, handsome stay in a neighborhood that doesn't always offer either.

  24. Marriott's Autograph Collection landed in Austin not downtown but beside the UT campus, which tells you something about its vibe. The Otis leans hard into the city's live-music identity, weaving that thread through the room design and the details rather than just hanging a guitar on a wall. Rooms run luxe without going cold, and four on-site restaurants and bars cover everything from New American to tapas to a rooftop lounge.

  25. The awards

  26. Hand-pulled noodles are the whole point here, thick and chewy and landing somewhere between a bowl of Chinese noodles and a Middle Eastern lamb stew, which is exactly what Uyghur cooking is. Jahunger holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod, and the menu is short, halal, and unapologetic about spice. A Cambridge noodle shop that quietly draws a crowd happy to wait.

A smudge stick salad opens the meal, which tells you most of what you need to know about Ishtia's ambitions. This intimate tasting menu in Kemah builds a multicourse experience around Indigenous American ingredients and tradition, run by a chef who also operates a molecular gastronomy restaurant nearby, because apparently one mode of cooking wasn't enough. 31. A storybook 1920s inn on the Russian River, the Stavrand has been around forever and carries that easy confidence. A recent renovation kept the historical bones and layered in something warm and quietly bohemian, the kind of California dream that doesn't announce itself. The restaurant stays central to the whole project, with a team of chefs leaning hard into the produce of this absurdly fertile region. It holds two Michelin Keys.

  32. Rank 2336. Valhalla

    Pan-Asian

A single chef's counter runs the length of a cool, dark room in Wicker Park, putting every diner front-row for the kitchen. Valhalla is a tasting menu spot where the food roams freely, pulling from Filipino, Mexican, Chinese, and Indian traditions in the same meal. The cocktail and wine pairings are taken as seriously as the food, which is saying something. The Banchets named the sommelier of the year for 2025.

    Caribbean

Jerk chicken wings with pineapple curry sauce set the tone at this African-Caribbean fusion restaurant on Cerrillos Road, a casual, colorful room where the chef's roots on the Kenyan island of Lamu show up in every bowl and skewer. Goat stew in island curry, chicken curry over cumin-scented coconut rice, it all reads like a very specific passport. 35. Rank 2338. Restaurant Beatrice

    Contemporary Cajun & Creole

The restaurant is named for chef Michelle Carpenter's grandmother, whose fried chicken recipe anchors the menu at this contemporary Cajun and Creole spot in Oak Cliff. Dark-meat, deeply seasoned, and handed down through generations, it's the kind of dish that makes everything else feel like a warm-up act. The charbroiled oysters with Parmesan and andouille crumbles suggest the kitchen has range. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant in 2023.

  36. Rank 2338. Zoli

    Seafood

A seafood restaurant in Williamsburg run by a fisherman's son, which shows. The menu leans on familiar territory but keeps swerving: surf clam in aguachile, mussels that are genuinely plush, squid that's properly charred. Then dessert arrives and a Basque cheesecake shows up funked with taleggio. The New York Times gave it two stars and a spot on their Restaurant List, which for a room this unpretentious in Maujer St feels about right.

Pork runs the show in several forms, steelhead trout swims in tamarind broth for balance, and the deep-fried plantain spring roll dusted in brown sugar is the kind of dessert that reframes what dessert can be.

    Filipino

Pork belly adobo with pineapple is the kind of dish that explains what this Filipino restaurant inside the Kimpton Alton Hotel is trying to do, which is honor traditional flavors and then quietly push past them. The kitchen came up through a pop-up circuit, and the ambition carried over. The family-style "paubaya" option hands the whole meal to the chef, a move that tends to reward the trusting. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list in 2022.

  46. Bellhops in denim and cowboy hats set the tone at this Auberge resort spread across a 712-acre working ranch on the Napa-Sonoma border. Stone and wood farmhouses serve as guest rooms, wildflowers fill the grounds, and a vast spa complex anchors the wellness side of things. The ranch aesthetic is committed but tasteful, never sliding into theme-park territory. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  50. Two Greg Norman-designed golf courses sit at the center of this Forbes Four Star resort, which tilts toward the active end of the Ritz-Carlton spectrum. Texas Barbecue

A counter-service BBQ spot in suburban Maryland where the American Wagyu brisket is buttery enough to stop conversation mid-sentence. The smoked turkey and peppery pork ribs fill out a tray you'll keep adding to despite your better judgment, and the sides, brisket-studded beans included, pull their weight. Lines form fast, so regulars often grab their bags and go. A James Beard semifinalist, and ranked tenth on Washingtonian's top 100.

  53. A modernist resort on a coastal bluff between San Diego and Orange County, Alila Marea sits just high enough above the Pacific that even the pool feels like a vantage point. Rooms run toward calm minimalism with floor-to-ceiling windows, and not every one faces the water directly, though the tradeoff is rarely painful. The spa, a poolside bar, and VAGA Restaurant round out the property for guests who'd rather not leave.

  54. A boutique hotel planted at the center of downtown Napa's unlikely glow-up, the Archer puts you within easy walking distance of wine tasting rooms, public art, and the kind of riverfront that makes you forget you came here to drink. The rooms lean into wine-country warmth without overdoing the rustic affectations, and the location does most of the heavy lifting for anyone who wants to explore on foot rather than rent a car.

  55. A 317-acre resort in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, about ten minutes from the Santa Fe plaza, Bishop's Lodge has been around forever, cycling from archbishop's residence to dude ranch before landing in its current life as an Auberge property. Kiva fireplaces and Native American art fill the rooms, while outside there's hiking, horseback riding, a heated pool, and a chapel repurposed for yoga, which feels very Santa Fe.

    The awards

  56. Craftsman timber beams and a stone hearth the size of a small house anchor the lobby of this Disney resort hotel, which opens directly onto California Adventure and Downtown Disney. More than 900 rooms means it's never exactly intimate, but the proximity to the parks is the whole point. Tenaya Stone Spa offers a quieter corner when the churro fumes get overwhelming. Cast members handle everything with unsettling cheer, which is either magical or unnerving depending on your caffeine level.

  57. Ten acres of Spanish colonial buildings, red-tile roofs, and sun-baked courtyards that started life as a horse ranch and never really lost the feeling of one. This La Jolla resort spreads itself unhurriedly across lush native gardens with fire pits, a heated saltwater pool, a Moroccan-inspired spa, and guest rooms that are considerably more comfortable than any stable. Three dining venues on-site means you don't have to leave if you'd rather not.

  58. Okàn is a sunny, window-lined dining room in Bluffton where West African, Caribbean, and Lowcountry cooking share a menu without anyone fighting over it. Banquettes are cushy, local art covers the walls, and a big bar sits dead center like it's running the place. Portions run generous and meant for passing around a table. 60. Rank 2364. CheLi

    Shanghainese

Red and cream lanterns glow over a warren of nooks on St. Marks Place, where a line almost always trails out the front door. Che Li is a Shanghainese seafood-leaning restaurant with an ambitious menu, so asking the server about regional highlights beats scrolling to the familiar end. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the fish stew with Sichuan peppercorns tends to be the last thing standing on the table.

  61. Rank 2365. Odre

    Korean

Three cauldrons of rice and soup stay warm at the bar up front, which tells you a lot about how Odre thinks about hospitality. This East Village prix-fixe leans into Korean comfort at a pace that feels considered rather than rushed, with a set menu that moves through banchan, a main like grilled duck with black garlic, and snow crab mandoo that the New York Times singled out. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room is narrow, minimalist, and usually full.

  71. VHS tapes line the walls and neon washes over the tile at this Magazine Street restaurant from the chef behind Turkey and the Wolf. Mason Hereford runs his kitchen the same way he always has, cooking loud, maximalist food that borrows freely across cuisines and somehow lands in harmony every time. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and named to Bon Appétit's best new restaurants list. Subtlety fans may want to eat somewhere else.

  72. Spanish-Asian doesn't sound like it should work, yet Tracy Chang's Cambridge restaurant has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand for making it feel inevitable. The menu roams from patatas bravas to crab laksa to pork belly bao without ever seeming lost. Beyond dinner service, the team runs cooking classes and whole suckling pig dinners, so the place is always up to something. A James Beard semifinalist two years running.

  73. Rank 2378. Demo

    Natural Wine Bar

  74. Sourdough crusts fired in a hot electric oven, topped with combinations like chorizo, romesco, and Castelvetrano olives, are the organizing principle at this maximalist pizzeria inside Mercantile on Morris. The warehouse bones and exposed brick give it a casual, stylish feel, but the kitchen is serious. Meatballs and desserts pull their weight too. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant add some context to the hype.

  75. Rank 2380. FOB Kitchen

    Filipino

Pandan piña coladas and crackling pork belly set the tone at this contemporary Filipino restaurant in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood, where aquatic blue tiles and trailing vines give the room a loose, coastal ease. The menu swings between dinner and weekend brunch, and both hold up well. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it draws a crowd happy to wait at the bar, cocktail in hand, for a table that's worth the patience.

  76. Rank 2380. Insalata's

    Mediterranean

Lemon-yellow walls hung with paintings of overflowing produce set the mood at this Mediterranean-leaning Marin restaurant, where California ingredients meet Middle Eastern flavors in a white-tablecloth room that never feels stiff. The kitchen leans hard into mezze and grilled meats, and a takeout counter in the back stocks house-baked bread, salads, and condiments for people who planned ahead. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  77. Rank 2380. Village Sake

    Japanese

A live-edge wood counter and closely spaced tables give this Fairfax izakaya the feel of a Tokyo side street, which is a reasonable trick to pull in Marin County. The small-plates menu moves through takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and a short but careful nigiri selection, with a sake list overseen by an actual sake sommelier. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. No reservations, so weekend lines form early and move slowly.

  78. Rank 2383. Anima by EDO

    Modern Mediterranean

Maritime murals and leather benches set the mood at this fine dining Mediterranean spot off the Strip, where the kitchen leans hard into Italy and Spain with a particular fondness for Catalonian tapas. Sharing plates, pasta, risotto, and a tasting menu in omnivore, vegan, or vegetarian form give the table options. The chef was a James Beard nominee for Best Chef Southwest.

  79. Rank 2384. Café Kestrel

    Unfussy European Bistro

A tiny Red Hook corner spot where the menu fits on one page and the fried halloumi, served warm over honey, made the New York Times list of top dishes. Café Kestrel runs pan-European with a French lean: terrines, duck confit, a seafood plate finished with gaufrettes. The room is casual enough for a Tuesday but pulled-together enough that you won't feel underdressed ordering dessert, which the staff will gently insist upon anyway.

  80. The reservation line forms before doors open, which tells you everything about the temperature of this contemporary Indian restaurant inside the Aria. The room is all velvet and low light, the service is composed, and the kitchen pulls from street-food traditions without being precious about it. Curries are built for sharing and arrive bold enough to hold the table's attention, even by Las Vegas standards.

  81. Rank 2386. Cesarina

    Italian

A glass-walled pasta room lets you watch fusilli and tortelli take shape before they land on your table, which at this Ocean Beach trattoria feels about right. The menu is mostly mix-and-match, pasta shapes paired with sauces, and a server will gently steer you away from a wrong turn. Tableside tiramisu, mismatched hand-painted pottery, Valpolicella on the list. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room earns the noise.

  82. Boat noodles are the draw at this Thai noodle shop tucked into a Hollywood strip mall, where the broth runs thick, dark, and serious, and you pick your protein, noodle type, and heat level before the bowl hits the table. The portions are small by design, which is the shop's way of nudging you toward ordering two. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on the LA Times 101 list. The stir-fried holy basil with pork is not an afterthought.

  83. Corn is flown in from Mexico and nixtamalized in house, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Mexican restaurant's priorities. Named for the Zapotec god of maize, it's a fonda-style spot where tortillas and quesadillas come from scratch, a hickory hearth does real work in the salsas, and the bar runs a margarita built on elote mezcal. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and the room fills up accordingly.

  84. Rank 2389. Yemenat

    Middle Eastern

The word "post-authentic" painted on the window tells you something about the ambition here before you sit down. This Yemeni restaurant in Bay Ridge fills a brick-and-dark-wood room with families, neighborhood lifers, and northward refugees all tearing into great rounds of rashoosh and heaping plates of lamb. The New York Times put it at number 31 on its 100 best list, and Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand. Portions are sized for sharing whether you planned to or not.

  86. Soup dumplings are the whole point here, and the kitchen treats them accordingly, wrapping every one by hand with skins thin enough to test your chopstick nerve. This casual dumpling shop on a Hayes Valley corner earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the stacks of bamboo steamers that fill the room explain why. The fillings run wider than the usual pork-only lineup, and the broth inside is cleaner than most.

  87. Rank 2390. Stellina Pizzeria

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The wood-burning oven is the whole point here, and it runs hot enough that pies come out of it faster than the counter moves. Stellina is a casual neo-Neapolitan pizzeria in Union Market territory, with colorful tiles, red stools, and the kind of blistered, chewy crust that makes "simple counter service" feel like a charitable description. The fritti is a good opening move, and the tiramisu won't embarrass anyone. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand.

  88. The dried chilies arrive in a mound that buries the fried chicken underneath, which is your first clue about where things are headed. Z & Y Peking Duck is a Sichuan restaurant in Chinatown where the heat is the point, not a warning label, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand backs that up. The room is worn and relaxed, the service matches, and parking is its own ordeal. Come ready to sweat a little.

    Barbecue

The American Wagyu brisket is the kind of thing that makes you briefly reconsider your whole life. This counter-service BBQ spot smokes everything over wood, and the lineup, brisket, pork ribs, and smoked turkey, has the room packed early and the bags out the door fast. The sides pull their weight too, particularly the brisket-studded beans. A James Beard semifinalist in 2026, it ranked tenth on Washingtonian's list that same year.

    Korean

The one decision you make at this Korean diner on Allen Street is which protein you want. Everything else arrives whether you're ready or not: rotating banchan, crispy jeon, soy-cured shrimp, the works, with refills waved over without asking. The whole thing costs $36, lunch is $19, and a coffee from the machine by the door is on the house on the way out. It's modeled on Korea's taxi driver restaurants, which is exactly the energy.

The menu runs about a dozen dishes, no starters, no desserts, just Peruvian seafood prep done with real focus: causas, ceviche, and beautifully cured fish with clean, bright sauces. Counter seating, a warm room, and a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the kind of cooking that doesn't need a dramatic backdrop to make its case.

  95. The Beaux Arts bones of this Peachtree Street tower have been around forever, and the restoration leans into that, pairing grand marble public spaces with rooms that nod to the South without going full plantation-house about it. It's a full-service hotel in the Curio Collection, so the comforts are reliable without being anonymous. By George, the in-house restaurant, handles the split well too: modernist furniture, imposing columns, nobody seems confused.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
