  2. A butcher counter at the front sets the tone: this West Village chophouse takes whole-animal cooking seriously, sending globally-inflected dishes through a five-course tasting menu or a looser à la carte spread. The baklava doughnut, crispy and honey-soaked, has a way of sticking in the memory. The chef was a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Great Lakes. Sandwiches at the bar keep lunch from feeling like a commitment.

  3. Rank 1903. Bettina

    Wood-fired Pizzeria

Wood-fired pizza from a pair who met slinging pies at Roberta's in New York, now settled into a bright spot in the Montecito Country Mart. Bettina is a pizzeria with a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a slow-fermented dough that shows up in every crust. Pastas get the same attention, and the oven moonlights in baked goods, so leaving without a brown-butter chocolate chip cookie is the kind of mistake you only make once.

  4. Rank 1903. Sama Sama Kitchen

    Southeast Asian

A Nashville barbecue devotee and an Indonesian-born chef walk into a Santa Barbara kitchen, and the result is a Southeast Asian restaurant that a Michelin Bib Gourmand and the LA Times both noticed. The menu moves between green papaya salad, steamed or fried bao, and dishes that land somewhere between comfort food and serious cooking. The back patio with string lights is where you want to be.

  5. Rank 1903. Table Culture Provisions

    Californian French

Ten tables, Anita Baker on the speakers, and a basket of house-made potato chips arriving before the tasting menu begins, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. This fine dining spot in downtown Petaluma runs four or seven courses of California cooking with French technique, from a chef trained at Institut Paul Bocuse. The Chronicle's Top 100 lists have noticed. Go for the longer menu and don't skip the Parker House rolls.

  6. This is the Vegas branch of a New York all-day cafe, a sunny, Tiffany-blue dining room beside the Bellagio's botanical gardens where bagels arrive stacked in three-tier towers. It's fancy for a place that mostly sells eggs and fish salad, so the Strip's fully rested and the freshly regretful sit side by side over grapefruit cocktails. Grab a sticky bun from the cart up front on your way out.

  7. Rank 1907. CookHouse

    American

Marble bar, exposed brick, and blue velvet banquettes make this Bolton Hill neighborhood restaurant look as good as the brownstones outside. The menu swings from Caesar steak tartare to crispy pork knuckle with beer gravy, and a wagyu brisket-chuck burger with smoked tomato-bacon jam has earned its own following. Tamarind-lime daiquiris help with the decision-making. Baltimore Magazine named it one of the city's top restaurants for 2026.

  9. The 1889 Saloon inside is supposedly designed by the cattle baron's wife, which is exactly the kind of detail that makes this old-school Phoenix steakhouse feel like it earned its spurs. Corn-fed aged beef and prime rib anchor the menu, alongside bison meatloaf and baking soda biscuits that haven't changed much since the place opened. The Western décor leans hard into its ranching roots, and nobody seems to mind.

  10. This is a deli at Circa where the sandwiches arrive big enough to share, and the fluorescent lights stay on around the clock. That suits the clientele, a mix of tourists who haven't been to bed yet and people who woke up wanting a reuben at breakfast. Pancakes and shakshuka run until 2pm, and the matzo ball soup shows up whenever your night is ending. Ordering online spares you the lighting.

  13. Sushi Gen is a Little Tokyo sushi bar that's been around forever, and the line out the door suggests nobody has told it to slow down. The move is a sampler plate of the house favorites, priced like a normal weeknight dinner. If you'd rather steer, grab a seat at the counter and order nigiri à la carte while veteran chefs turn out piece after piece without breaking a sweat. It's casual and cash-friendly, so wear whatever you like.

  15. A former auto garage with a butcher-paper cocktail menu still hanging above the makeshift kitchen, Liquid Diet is a creative cocktail bar where the bartenders juice and blend everyday ingredients into drinks that read like a dare. Bell pepper martinis, key lime sippers, banana bread cocktails with cookie shards frozen into chiseled ice cubes. Esquire named it one of the best bars in America, and curious tourists and pub crawlers seem to be putting that to the test nightly.

  16. Rank 1916. Allday

    New York-style American Pizzeria

Allday is a minimalist neighborhood pizzeria on Speedway, turning out New York-style pies with a lightly charred, still-chewy crust and a tangy sauce. The Pep & Pepp stacks tiny pepperonis under diced pepperoncini, which is about as much suspense as a pizza needs. A six-slice sampler arrives on one tray for the undecided. It has turned up on The Infatuation's best pizza in America list.

  17. Rank 1917. Horn Barbecue

    West Coast Barbecue

A mural of an angry steer watches over the counter at this Oakland BBQ shop, and the vibe tracks: the pits here are serious. Matt Horn calls it West Coast Barbecue, which means brisket, pulled pork, and sausages on butcher paper with sides like pit beans and Granny's potatoes. Lines form early and stay long. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and it landed a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant.

  18. Rank 1917. Spuntino

    Indian-influenced Italian

The Indian-inflected Italian restaurant in the Highlands neighborhood where the chef's masala aioli turns up on elk tartare and the pasta always involves goat. Her husband painstakingly sources small-producer wines from across Italy and makes his own amari in-house, which is either obsessive or exactly right. The room is intimate and the hospitality famously warm. A James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, and the reputation makes sense from the first drink forward.

  19. A pasta program that changes with the season keeps regulars at this Germantown neighborhood restaurant coming back to see what Philip Krajeck is running on the menu. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and a James Beard nomination for Best Chef Southeast followed.

  20. Rank 1920. Annam

    Contemporary Vietnamese

The dining room at this contemporary Vietnamese restaurant in Autry Park runs in cream and white, with booths wide enough to actually spread out. The menu threads French technique through Vietnamese cooking, and the portions are generous enough to make sharing feel less like a virtue and more like a strategy. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks with the pricing. Bring people you like.

  21. Rank 1920. The Paper Bridge

    Northern Vietnamese

The menu at this Northern Vietnamese restaurant annotates each dish with culinary and cultural history, so you'll know why the Dungeness crab spring rolls arrive in the square shape customary to Haiphong. The team makes their own rice noodles, a laborious thing few bother with, for a deep roster of phos and noodle plates. Bring a group so the grilled half-duck makes sense. The New York Times put it on their 2025 Restaurant List.

  22. Rank 1922. Alebrije

    Mexican

The darkly tinted windows and near-invisible signage in an East Nashville strip mall suggest you might have the wrong address, but push through. This casual Mexican restaurant built its following as a pandemic pop-up and landed here with a menu centered on masa, nixtamalized and ground in-house, turning up as tortillas, sopes, and tostadas. The New York Times named the asparagus tostada one of the best restaurant dishes eaten across the country in 2025. No liquor license, but the taco shop next door sells beer.

  23. Rank 1922. Chengdu Taste

    Full-Throttle Sichuan

Chengdu Taste does not negotiate with your spice tolerance. This Alhambra Sichuan restaurant has been packing in crowds for years without once softening its approach, and the dining room smells like chili oil and vindication. Toothpick lamb, heavy with cumin, is the move that everyone talks about. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record here, and lunch is the local's trick for skipping the line that forms most evenings.

  24. The dining room looks straight out over the water at Newport Beach, which would be enough for most restaurants to coast on. This modern New American spot holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it by pairing that view with a menu that swings from inventive vegetable dishes to an ambitious slow-roasted porchetta. The crowd comes for the scenery and stays because the food keeps surprising them.

  25. Karen Akunowicz's Italian restaurant in South Boston earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the kind of pasta that makes you quietly resent every other pasta you've ever eaten. The long bar up front fills fast, banquettes stretch back for the slower evening, and focaccia stuffed with taleggio lands before you've figured out what else to order. The room runs from parents with kids to couples just starting their night, which somehow all works.

    Regional Mexican

Table-shaken margaritas set the tone at Rick Bayless's long-running regional Mexican restaurant on Clark Street, where the menu rotates around whatever's local and the molé gets the kind of attention most kitchens reserve for special occasions. The room runs warm and loud in the best sense, with music that makes the wait feel shorter than it is. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and Eater counts it among Chicago's essential restaurants.

  27. Pakistani-Indian restaurant on a Fullerton strip that otherwise runs to taquerias and carnicerias, which tells you something about how much confidence it takes to open here. The room is bright and a little hip, with a craft mocktail bar in the back. Beef is quietly central to the menu, though chicken and vegetable dishes hold their own. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on Eater's list of essential Orange County restaurants.

  28. The garage doors roll up when the weather cooperates, which in Charleston is often enough to matter. This seafood spot, a converted filling station on King Street, holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it with small, smart moves: fried saltine crackers alongside the smoked mahi dip, shrimp rolls garnished with crushed potato chips. The grower Champagne list is an unexpected flex for a place this casual. The fried chicken, brined in buttermilk and hit with Old Bay, tends to cause a scene.

  29. A complimentary splash of bubbles lands on your table the moment you sit down, which sets the tone nicely for a Montrose pizza and pasta spot that's got more going on than it lets on. The wood-fired oven does most of the talking, and the honey cake with crème fraîche gelato has a way of making people miss their plans. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, and the wine list is longer than you'd expect.

    Central Texas Barbecue

The menu is written on butcher paper, the floors are concrete, and the white bread is made in-house and served alongside your tray, which is how Central Texas does it. This no-frills BBQ shop off Curry Ford Road holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the kind of smoke-forward brisket and pork ribs that don't need explanation. The jalapeño-cheddar sausage and collard greens with garlic are the sides people come back to argue about.

The menu is posted on the front windows of this Art Deco corner spot, which is either a charming invitation or a warning that space inside is tight. Either way, mint-green walls and Mason-jar lights above a glossy tile bar make the room feel worth the squeeze. Southern-inflected seasonal cooking, a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a wine list that actually holds its own round out a neighborhood restaurant that punches well above its square footage.

  34. Rank 1922. The Ravenous Pig

    Modern Southern

Frosted glass panels half-obscure the open kitchen, which is either atmospheric or a tease, depending on how curious you are about what's happening back there. This moody, industrial gastropub in Winter Park earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for modern Southern cooking that treats pub classics as a starting point rather than a ceiling. The menu leans into charcoal, smoke, and pickle in ways that feel considered without feeling fussy.

  35. The seafoam-green booths say classic American diner; the kale nachos say something else is going on. This Shaw spot runs on familiar comfort food remixed just enough to keep things interesting, from meatloaf with sriracha and morel gravy to cauliflower with tahini and fried chickpeas. Brunch draws a crowd for egg dishes and sandwiches, and the lemon meringue pie is not optional. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and you'll want a reservation.

The indigo exterior on King Street is your first hint that something deliberate is happening inside. Maison is a Parisian French bistro where the black-and-white tile, low club booths, and platters of escargot do most of the convincing before the menu arrives. The kitchen leans into modern French technique with Lowcountry ingredients, so steak frites shares space with seasonal terrines and housemade black truffle sausages. 39. Rank 1939. Amara At Paraiso

    Waterfront Latin American

Michael Schwartz's waterfront Latin-inspired restaurant sits on Biscayne Bay, where the patio has the kind of views that make everyone at the table look better than they are. The menu pulls from across South America, farm-to-table in spirit, with dishes built for sharing under open sky. The drinks program is a James Beard Semifinalist, and the cocktails lean into the Florida-tropics overlap without apology. Go when the weather cooperates, which in Miami is most of the time.

  40. The patio at this fine dining seafood restaurant inside the Hotel del Coronado looks out over manicured grounds to the Pacific, with an outdoor fireplace taking over once the sun disappears. The menu leans heavily on raw shellfish and fresh whole fish, priced accordingly, so budget-conscious pescatarians may want to look away. Book early; the wedding circuit has discovered this view too.

  41. Rank 1941. Marigold

    Contemporary French

Lyons is a small river town north of Boulder where you wouldn't expect to find a contemporary French restaurant this precise, yet here it is. The menu shifts constantly, chasing whatever the chef is curious about, and the wine list leans into small Old World producers working with native grapes, which the floor staff navigate with you rather than at you. 45. A bread house and wine bar born from an actual marriage, which is either romantic or the most efficient way to divide labor ever conceived. The dishes read simple but arrive with quiet technique underneath, and a dedicated section of chilled reds by the glass gives the wine list a personality of its own. The room is casual without being careless, and the New York Times put it on their Nashville list.

This Navigation Boulevard Tex-Mex institution is credited with bringing fajitas into the national conversation, a fact locals mention with the quiet pride of a sports championship. Order the tacos a la Ninfa, the original play, and the frozen margarita that started the whole legend.

  52. Wooden A-frames perch over Hood Canal tidal flats on a working fifth-generation oyster farm, which tells you most of what you need to know about the oysters. This is an outdoor seafood spot where bivalves are the reason anyone drives out to Lilliwaup, though the supporting cast of crab cakes and clam dishes holds its own. The Stump Bar pours beer and wine and sells buckets of you-shuck oysters for those who skip the reservation.

    Imperial Manchu

The strip-mall facade on Las Tunas gives nothing away, but inside, the room goes full imperial, red and gold and blue, with the kind of scale that makes you feel a dinner party is the minimum viable unit. This is fine dining rooted in royal Manchu cuisine from the Qing court, so luxury ingredients arrive without apology. Come with a crowd and order widely; the menu rewards the ambitious table. A Michelin Guide selected restaurant.

    Steakhouse

The view from the top of Reunion Tower has been making Dallas look good for years, and the steakhouse that lives up there now leans into it hard, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a dress code keeping things appropriately sharp. Sushi shares the menu with steaks from local farms, and the triple-cooked fries are the kind of side you order again before the first plate is cleared. Book well ahead; 200 seats fill faster than you'd expect.

    Mediterranean

Sitting inside the Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale, this modern Mediterranean restaurant earns its own reason to show up, with a menu that pulls from Levantine cooking and slips in Floridian touches along the way. The room faces the pool and the Atlantic beyond it, which is either inspiring or distracting depending on your dining companion. The kitchen leans into spreads, skewers, and the kind of food that makes a long dinner feel easy.

Jean-Georges Vongerichten's steakhouse inside the ARIA leans on the premium-cut playbook, Wagyu and Kobe alongside serious seafood, with the kind of sauce work that reminds you a French-trained chef is quietly running things. 60. Rank 1966. Apolonia

    Contemporary Mediterranean

Apolonia is a hotel restaurant in the South Loop with the calm, spare look of a place that doesn't need to shout, and a Euro-Mediterranean menu with white-tablecloth ambitions. The handmade pastas are the main event, and a truffle puff bread arrives at the table with enough theater to turn heads two booths over. Its sommelier took home a Banchet, so the wine list probably isn't an afterthought. Dress like you've been somewhere.

This polished Italian osteria threads West Texas cooking through the menu, leaning on wild game and simple ingredients to blur the line between the Hill Country and the Apennines. The wine list skews Italian and smartly so.

Lunch added focaccia sandwiches and grandma-style pizza slices, which turned a quietly beloved dinner spot into something the whole city suddenly had opinions about.

    Mediterranean

The corner windows at this Mediterranean restaurant pull you in before you've even touched the door, and the room inside delivers on the promise: open, sunny, and staffed by people who seem to mean it. 65. The line outside the squat building on Fredericksburg Road has been a fixture of San Antonio mornings, afternoons, and evenings for as long as anyone can remember. This is a Tex-Mex diner in the old sense, the kind where eggs over easy get doused in salsa and scooped up with warm flour tortillas, and where the menu is so sprawling that regulars still haven't covered it. The staff treats everyone like they've been coming for years, which, in many cases, they have.

  69. Rank 1974. Terroir

    Modern Bistro

Terroir is a bistro on Boise's 8th Street restaurant row, where steak frites and chicken Lyonnaise sit on the same menu as sablefish in miso broth, which is the French equivalent of a friend who studied abroad and came back with range. It began as a butchery, then a wine store supper club, then a winery food trailer, so a permanent address counts as settling down. The chef is a James Beard Best Chef: Mountain semifinalist.

  70. A speakeasy above a pho shop is a concept that earns its own zip code, and Phocific Standard Time delivers on the premise. The Vietnamese coffee martini has become a reason people climb the stairs specifically, but the bar snacks, caramelized crab dip with sesame saltines among them, make lingering easy. Named one of The Infatuation's most fun Seattle bars, it's a cocktail bar that happens to pair very well with whatever you just had downstairs.

A converted warehouse in Little Italy with barrel-vaulted ceilings and enough candlelight to make everyone look good, Herb & Wood is a wood-fired New American restaurant where the menu swings from blistered pizzas to venison over buttermilk polenta without losing its footing. The PB&C dessert, chocolate-whiskey cake with peanut butter mousse, has its own following. 75. The interior runs like a train car, wood-paneled and faintly sweet with incense, and the menu is long enough to require a strategy. This cozy Elmhurst Thai restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed on the New York Times 100 Best list, which helps explain why the room fills fast. Curries, stir-fries, salads, and fried rice cover the bases, but the crispy catfish with mango salad is the kind of dish that makes the rest of the menu feel like a warm-up.

This is the Wooster Street pizzeria that made New Haven argue about whether "apizza" is a word, and the pies still come out of a coal-fired oven with a charred, smoky bottom and a crust that stays rigid when you lift a slice. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
