Glass-block windows, indoor hammocks, and perforated surfaces give this 15-room boutique hotel the feel of a well-curated Miami apartment building dropped into a Tulum jungle. It sits in the quiet town center, two miles inland from the beach hotel zone, which keeps prices honest. The courtyard pool bar serves fresh cocktails among dyed-wicker furniture, and the rooms are genuinely spacious. No restaurant, but Tulum is hardly short of options.

The architect Miguel Ángel Aragonés called them "floating boxes," and that's the right way to think about this resort in the quieter, more upscale San José del Cabo. Stark white cubes cantilevered over still reflecting pools, pathways threading between an oceanfront pool, a spa, a gallery, and a sushi restaurant shaped like a nest over water. Rooms are pristine and modern, with floor-to-ceiling sea views. The rooftop bar exists, and you will use it repeatedly.

A hacienda-style hotel just outside San Miguel's historic center, complete with stone archways, landscaped gardens, a big pool, and a full lienzo charro, which is, yes, a Spanish-style bullring on the grounds. Rooms are simple and warm, with wooden furniture and earthy ochres, some with ceramic floors and pool-view balconies. Two-for-one margaritas, mariachi at a nearby lawn wedding, kids on the playground: the theme is not subtle, and nobody here seems troubled by that.

The name is a nod to sterling silver, which requires 92.5% purity and once made this city obscenely rich. This boutique hotel in Guanajuato's UNESCO historic center sits in a restored colonial building where exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings meet contemporary styling without apology. The rooftop bar frames a skyline of antique bell towers at sunset, and the wine cellar occupies the building's original cisterns. It holds a Michelin Key.

Tuscan-style villas planted in Valle de Guadalupe wine country, this resort leans hard into the Mediterranean cosplay while keeping Mexican soul in the native wood and stone interiors. Suites run from ground-level patios with firepits to upper rooms with vaulted ceilings and vineyard views, and most come with a wine fridge, which is thoughtful given the surroundings. The on-site restaurant does Baja-Yucatán fusion, and bicycles and golf carts handle the rest.

The palapa roofs and Balinese-style huts are named for the Mayan sun god of universal consciousness, which tells you everything about the vibe before you've unpacked. This boutique resort on the Tulum coast keeps things deliberately low-impact and open to the breeze, with suites and freestanding cabañas that look straight out to sea. An onsite restaurant serves Mexican-Caribbean cooking, and there's a full vegan café, which remains a novelty even here.

Mexican
An open-air restaurant hidden inside a jungle resort up a dusty road, where overhead fans and misters keep both the guests and the greenery comfortable. The kitchen runs casual contemporary Mexican with Asian turns worked in, so the menu moves from guacamole garnished with flower petals to mango-dressed ceviche to al Pastor suckling pig. The setting does a lot of work, and the food seems to know it, arriving looking equally composed.

A Middle Eastern restaurant tucked down a cobblestone alley in Oaxaca, which tells you something about how creative this city has gotten. The menu is short and built for sharing, with the kitchen sourcing its ingredients from local farms, then turning them into falafel, lamb kebab, and baklava that have nothing to apologize for. The expat crowd that fills the room seems to treat it as a weekly ritual rather than a discovery.

The dining room inside Solaz resort opens toward the ocean with the kind of airiness that makes a hotel restaurant feel like it actually wants to be there. This is fine dining built around Baja ingredients and locally caught seafood, with octopus and bluefin tuna showing up in forms more considered than the poolside menu a few steps away. The churro with dark chocolate ice cream and tequila cream lands as a dessert, not an afterthought.

A surf town like Puerto Escondido doesn't usually invite serious kitchen ambition, but Almoraduz has been making Oaxacan cooking its whole project for years. The restaurant runs a la carte or a full tasting menu, with a kitchen that leans into local ingredients and technique without turning precious about either. Handsome wood tables, real greenery, and servers who actually know the menu round out a room that punches well above its beach-town surroundings.

The kitchen runs on burning logs that cooks move by hand, which tells you most of what you need to know. This open-air countryside restaurant south of Oaxaca City sits inside an expansive shed ringed by plants, pottery, and sweet woodsmoke. The menu is classically Oaxacan, memelas, enmoladas draped in mole, tlayudas packed with local cheese, with tableside salsas that improve everything they land on. Getting here will make you question your navigation skills at least once.

Mexican Steakhouse
The smell of the grill reaches you before the restaurant does, which is a decent way to find anything tucked down a colorful Jalatlaco side street. This is a Mexican steakhouse leaning hard into the fire, with a broad menu that folds in some European touches. Plantain dumplings in mole negro and glazed short ribs that fall apart politely suggest the kitchen knows what it's doing well beyond the grill.

Mexican
An old tree spreads across the open-air dining room at this Mexican restaurant in Brisas de Zicatela, sharing space with wood beams and a backlit bar that wouldn't look out of place in a design magazine. The cooking leans casual, tostadas and chile rellenos, but the salsas and sauces are made with enough conviction that you notice. The pink facade on Calle de Puebla gives away nothing except that someone here has good taste. Bella Aurora is an all-day Italian spot in Roma Norte, from the same team behind Rosetta and Lardo, and it runs from breakfast pastries through pasta lunches to full dinners without ever feeling like it's trying too hard. The patio faces the pool and the beach, and if your timing is right you catch the Baja sunset head-on. Benno is the hotel restaurant at Hotel San Cristóbal in Todos Santos, open from breakfast through dinner, with a menu that leans into the coast: ceviche, grilled local cheese, whatever fish came in that day. The churros arrive as small bites with dulce de leche and warm chocolate for dipping, which is a quietly clever call.

A terraced dining room with a church view is the setting for this wood-fired Oaxacan restaurant in the city center. The menu leans into local ingredients with a quiet Mediterranean undercurrent, and the grill does most of the heavy lifting. Proteins arrive with that particular smokiness you can only fake badly at home. The peanut mole draws the most conversation, and the poleo-infused crème brûlée signals that the kitchen knows when to leave a classic alone and when not to.

Tucked inside the Chablé Maroma resort after a walk through actual jungle, Bu'ul is a fine-dining restaurant built around the argument that corn, beans, and chiles need no European framework to anchor a serious menu. The kitchen leans into recado rojo, pipián verde, and Oaxacan chocolate with the confidence of a place that has nothing to prove to risotto. Baja Seafood
The tables at this upscale seafood restaurant are cut from wood once used to haul boats, which tells you something about the kitchen's direction. Mexican
Adrián Herrera has a big name in Mexican food circles, and this is decidedly not his flashy flagship. It's a laid-back neighborhood fonda where the cooking runs to homey stewed goat and encacahuatadas, the kind of food that doesn't need a pretty plate to make its case. Northern-style Mexican
Northern-style tacos in Roma Norte, served from a small kitchen with a few tables and a sidewalk counter for overflow. The barbacoa de res is the reason to show up, and ordering it dorado-style, shallow fried until the tortilla crisps up, is the move most regulars make without thinking twice. The original Barrio Antiguo location of this Mexican grill and taqueria has a parrilla you can see from the patio, which sets expectations correctly. Tall ceilings, potted raised beds, and a full bar make it the kind of place where a table of four can spend an evening without really noticing the time. The plates run large, the arrachera tacos come on flour tortillas with a cheese crust, and the mezcal cocktails tend to multiply.

Pools of water run alongside the open dining room at this upscale Mexican restaurant inside the Riviera Maya EDITION hotel, giving the whole place the feeling of a very civilized swim break. The kitchen pulls ingredients from across Mexico and tilts familiar dishes sideways, pairing lamb with pistachio-and-cocoa-nib guacamole, for instance. Servers in crisp whites keep the spacious room running smoothly, cocktail bar humming at the center.

The Moroccan lamps and billowing curtains are easy to miss if you lose your nerve on the path down, but follow it and a full-on outdoor dining room appears, draped and glowing, with valley views behind it. Baja-Yucatecan Mexican
Planted inside a working vineyard on the Valle de Guadalupe wine route, this Baja-Yucatan restaurant sits next to the El Cielo resort with floor-to-ceiling glass framing the valley. The room goes rustic-elegant: stone and brick walls, a soaring ceiling, and the kind of view that makes the wine taste better before you've even ordered. An open-air farm-to-table restaurant just outside San José del Cabo, where the menu is organized not by courses but by garden, sea, roots, and live fire. The kitchen leans hard on local ingredients, and the bread alone, blue corn and whole wheat grilled over flame, signals the intent. The laidback garden setting makes it easy to order one more thing, which is probably the point.

The open kitchen at this fine dining room in Roma Norte runs at a steady clip, turning out plates that wander confidently across borders: think charred mamey with foie gras, or yuzu beurre blanc over charcoal-cooked striped bass. A beachfront restaurant serves an upscale take on local cuisine, ingredients sourced as carefully as the timber.

La Valise is a boutique beachfront property, a handful of bungalows and a villa, doing the Robinson Crusoe fantasy with enough good taste to make it feel earned rather than costumed. The team behind a well-regarded micro-boutique in Mexico City runs this one, so the bohemian design and traditional crafts actually have someone minding the details.

Suites and casitas sit directly on the sand, so the sea view is the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing at night. La Zebra is a barefoot beach resort on the Tulum coast, where the beach bar pours signature cocktails alongside local artisanal beers, and the restaurant leans into Mexican flavors and seasonal ingredients. Kids can learn to make tortillas and guacamole, which is a more charming activity than most resorts manage.

Architect Alberto Kalach's arched concrete volumes sit a few yards from the beach on Puerto Escondido's south end, and the rough-luxe interiors are by a Mexico City studio with an eye for beautiful austerity. Casona Sforza is an adults-only boutique hotel with eleven rooms, a Michelin Key, and a restaurant pulling from hyper-local Oaxacan ingredients with French technique folded in. A pedestrian lane in La Punta Zicatela, no cars, no noise, just the low hum of the Pacific a short walk away. Hotel Humano is a 39-room Grupo Habita property built in concrete, tropical wood, and handmade tile, with a rooftop spa, a courtyard pool, and a chef-driven restaurant running at the pace the coast demands. Mangrove canals thread through the property, so your first look at the Caribbean might come from a boat, not a beach chair. This Hyatt-flag resort in the upscale Mayakoba enclave pairs boutique room styling with full resort infrastructure: multiple restaurants leaning into Yucatecan seafood and street-food, water sports, eco-tours, and El Camaléon golf course next door. The villas have no TVs and no electric light, just Mayan mosaic bathtubs, jungle views, and a plug for your phone so you can pretend to unplug. This clothing-optional, adults-only wellness resort on Tulum's Caribbean coast leans hard into serenity: ecologically sensitive architecture, an ancient-ritual spa, and three restaurants ranging from avant-garde Mayan cuisine to sushi. Tulum has gotten crowded, but Azulik is still doing its own quietly strange thing.

Polished cement floors and a Mediterranean palette set this boutique hotel apart on a stretch of beachfront where every other property is leaning hard into boho-chic. Airy suites come with wide terraces, many with private pools and ocean views, and in-room Bose speakers that make staying in feel like a choice. Pathways shaded by palms lead down to a beach club and kitesurfing school, which is a refreshing swap for the yoga decks everyone else is offering.

Floor-to-ceiling glass doors face the Caribbean in every room, which is the whole point of this small, casual beach hotel near Tulum. The renovation that added them transformed what was once an unremarkable property into somewhere you'll spend most of your time staring at the water, which is fine because staring at the water is exactly what you came for. Thirty-one rooms, two sun terraces, a hammock or two, and a pretty stretch of beach round out the offer.

Stone-and-wood bungalows open onto jungle or sea at this beach resort on Tulum's coastal strip, where the programming runs from shaman-led workshops to an icy frezcal at the bar. Keith Haring prints cover the walls like wallpaper, and the retro furniture comes mixed with pieces from a New York gallerist's personal art collection. A trattoria-style Italian restaurant in the middle of Aguascalientes doing the full run: wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, and a tiramisu that earns its place on the menu. The pizza dough is well-leavened and topped with Neapolitan classics, while a few pies nod to local ingredients without making a fuss about it. The room feels warm and lived-in, which is the whole point. It ranked 39th on 50 Top Pizza Latin America.

A private beach stretch south of town keeps this modern luxury resort a step removed from Cozumel's busiest corridors. More than 200 rooms and suites all come with a balcony or patio, and a spa pulls from Maya tradition while the dive center points you toward the marine preserve at the island's southern tip. Between the kids' club, putting green, and dolphin-watching excursions, everyone finds a reason to stay put.

- #699 InterContinental Presidente Cozumel (this place) 67.1
- #700 Hotel Nerea Tulum 67.0
-
A boutique hotel just outside Tulum's main hotel zone, where the name means "flow" and the property leans into it: Tankah Bay is steps away, a lagoon pool fills the middle ground, and plunge pools scatter through the rest. The beach is rocky, but a small pier sends guests out kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling. The rooftop suites face the water directly. Slightly wilder, noticeably quieter than the typical Tulum scene, which is the whole point of being here.
