  1. Rank 401. Mott 32

    Cantonese

The abacus-inspired light fixtures alone could convince you this is a design hotel lobby, but Mott 32 is a fine dining room doing serious contemporary Chinese food inside The Palazzo. The menu pulls from Cantonese and Sichuanese traditions, and the applewood-roasted Peking duck has a following of its own. The dim sum spreads run all-you-can-eat without feeling like a cafeteria, which is a harder trick than it sounds.

  2. By six on a weekend morning, the lamb is already being hacked apart at this barbacoa shop in the Italian Market, and a line has formed before most of the city is awake. Chef Christina Martinez won a James Beard Award for what comes next: slow-cooked lamb folded into fresh tortillas, quesadillas stuffed with housemade Oaxacan cheese, salsas in every color. The crowd runs from construction workers to food journalists, which tells you something.

  3. The dining room is a century-old Montgomery Ward kit house, the kind of mail-order home that feels like a wry setup for what comes next: four to eight courses of seasonal New American cooking that takes real risks. The chef's tasting menus have landed on the New York Times Restaurant List and earned a James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist nod. There's a small inn next door if you'd rather not drive home contemplating dry-aged toro.

  5. This is the downtown branch of a Houston steakhouse dynasty, all dark wood, low lights, and the hush of people who have expense accounts. The wine list is built like a library, with a sommelier who can talk you through it without making you feel graded. Expect crab cakes, a dry-aged rib-eye under bearnaise, and a slab of New York-style cheesecake that locals treat as a civic duty. Dress like you're closing a deal.

  6. The line out the door on South 2nd is the most honest review you'll find. This Williamsburg slice shop has a counter, a few standing ledges, and pizza makers working in plain sight from dough to oven. The crust is thin, crisp, and taken seriously. 50 Top Pizza ranked it the top slice shop in the country, and the New York Times put it on their short list too. Order, pay, wait for your name, eat standing up. That's the whole deal.

  7. Soup dumpling tortellini is either a great idea or a cry for help, and at Maxwells Trading it reads as the former. This contemporary restaurant in the West Loop packs a converted warehouse, where the bar stretches nearly the full length of the room and the kitchen folds Japanese, Chinese, and Thai threads into a single, coherent menu. A rooftop herb garden feeds the kitchen. Named a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Great Lakes two years running.

  8. Rank 408. Joo Ok

    Traditional Korean

A freight elevator hauls you 16 floors above 32nd Street to a dining room that feels like a traditional Korean home transplanted into the Manhattan skyline. The chef's tasting menu holds two Michelin stars and moves through courses that pull from classical Korean cooking while doing things with perilla oil and geoduck that a grandmother would find baffling but probably delicious. The warm sunchoke tea that closes the meal is a genuinely disarming touch.

  9. Rank 409. Lowland

    Traditional Tavern

A two-story brick former residence just off King Street, Lowland bills itself as a modern take on the 19th-century English tavern, rerouted through the Carolina Lowcountry. The celery salad with dates, cheddar, and walnuts has become the kind of dish people call friends about. Downstairs buzzes; upstairs settles. Food & Wine named it one of the top US restaurants in 2025, and the room seems blissfully unaware of the pressure.

  10. The pastrami gets brined, pepper-and-coriander rubbed, and smoked before it lands on house-made rye sourdough at this Mueller BBQ shop and deli. Texas Monthly and the New York Times have both taken notice, and the James Beard committee named the team a semifinalist. Concrete floors, wooden-slat booths, and a menu that wanders happily between brisket by the pound and matzoh ball soup. No fuss about it.

  12. Rank 412. Nōksu

    Korean

A code-locked door in the middle of Koreatown opens onto a black marble counter, every chef armed with tweezers and clearly not messing around. Nōksu is a tasting-menu counter focused on contemporary Korean cooking, with seafood at the center and a rocking playlist overhead keeping things from getting too reverent. One Michelin star, and the squab landed on the New York Times top dishes list.

  13. Dangling greenery and cozy booths set the mood at this Cuban diner in Coconut Grove, where the kitchen opens early, closes late, and never seems to slow down. Chef Michael Beltran runs the room with something close to organized chaos, and the menu swings from oxtail ajiaco to towering sandwiches on fluffy Cuban bread. The guava and cream cheese pastelitos alone tend to decide the next visit before you've finished this one. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  14. Rank 415. Tamba

    Modern Indian

Oysters dressed with curry emulsions and Kashmiri chili signal right away that this modern Indian restaurant is not following a familiar script. The menu traces the chef's path through the Maldives, Seychelles, and beyond, so coastal raw bar items sit alongside the subcontinent's spice pantry without apology. The room leans toward subdued opulence, the plating rewards a camera, and a James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant keeps the ambitions in view.

  15. Pressed-tin ceiling, exposed brick, wine bottles lining the shelves above your head: this Georgetown neo-bistro looks exactly like the French place you've been trying to find in this city. The seasonal menu is deliberately short and liable to change, which feels like a feature rather than a bug. The chef earned a Food & Wine Best New Chefs nod in 2023, and the cocktails are sharp enough to slow down the ordering process considerably.

  16. Pasta anchors the menu, but the chef insists Wildweed isn't an Italian restaurant, and a rib eye with umeboshi, seaweed jelly, and fermented crab makes a reasonable case. This Over-the-Rhine dinner spot grew out of years of pop-ups, and the bar counter lets you watch the kitchen work through every strange, precise move. Named to the New York Times Restaurant List and a James Beard nominee, it earns the attention without seeming to chase it.

  17. Rank 419. Molly's Rise and Shine

    Southern American

Formica tabletops and vinyl chairs set the scene at this Garden District breakfast spot, which serves nothing but breakfast and takes that mandate seriously. The menu runs from yogurt and granola to loaded grits, biscuits and gravy, and a riff on the fast-food McMuffin with sage sausage and gooey American cheese. A James Beard semifinalist that manages to feel nothing like one, in the best way.

  18. Rank 420. Gado Gado

The name means "mix mix" in Indonesian, which is either a promise or a warning depending on your appetite. This eclectic Southeast Asian restaurant from Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly blends Indonesian and Malaysian flavors with bistro instincts, dry-aged tartare showing up alongside rendang and satay. The rice table feast gives the fullest picture of what the kitchen is doing. A James Beard nominee and a New York Times pick.

  19. Rank 421. 2 Amy's

This Neapolitan pizzeria in Cleveland Park has the kind of certification from Naples that sounds like it should come with a notarized stamp, and it takes the paperwork seriously. The pies come out blistered and soft, with buffalo mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, and anchovies applied without apology. It's casual and loud with families, and the chef was a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Chef.

  20. A tableside "chocotherapy" ritual, where chocolate is poured over your hands mid-meal, tells you exactly what kind of tasting menu this is. Chef Juan Manuel Barrientos runs a multisensory Colombian experience in a sleek stone-and-wood room with an open kitchen and backlit bar. The parade of small bites leans theatrical, and the crowd is fully on board. It holds a Michelin star.

  21. An open hearth anchors this airy SoMa tasting menu restaurant, and the kitchen uses it with more finesse than the setting might suggest. Chef Christopher Bleidorn holds a two-star Michelin rating and earns it by pairing live-fire cooking with a real sense of play, lacquered quail assembled tableside like Peking duck, creek trout arriving as roe, dessert hidden under mochi. The room is elegant and the pacing unhurried, so clear your evening.

  27. Dhamaka means "explosion" in Hindi, and the kitchen takes that seriously, sending out smoky goat belly wrapped in cedar wood and mutton in clay pots swimming in dark chili oil with a whole roasted garlic bulb. This is a sit-down Indian restaurant in Essex Market that goes deep into rustic, regional dishes rarely spotted on menus here. The chef holds a James Beard Award. Tables are comically small, so bring people you like close.

  28. Sedalia's shares a property with the Walters family's playground equipment business, which tells you something about Oklahoma City's appetite for surprise. It's a seafood and conservas restaurant where the menu shifts weekly but almost always circles back to anticuchos, a nod to co-owner Silvana's Bolivian roots. Chef Zack Walters earned a James Beard nomination for Best Chef: Southwest, and Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants.

  30. A glass-walled dining room that reads more like a sunroom than a tasting menu destination, Little Pearl is the quieter, more intimate sibling in the Rose's Luxury family of Capitol Hill restaurants. The seasonal menu rotates constantly, save for the signature angel egg amuse, and the wine pairings show the same offbeat curiosity as the food. A Michelin star, and somehow one of the more approachable price points among D.C. tasting menus.

  31. Rank 432. Mijoté

    French

The name means "simmered," which tells you something about the chef's approach: unhurried, precise, nothing showing off. This is a casual French prix-fixe counter in the Mission, built around a weekly four-course menu that follows Northern California's seasons and a natural wine list that would feel at home in a Paris cave. The chef trained in France via Japan, and the room, all warm wood and open kitchen, has the nerve to be unpretentious about it. A James Beard nominee.

  32. A sleek contemporary restaurant in Palo Alto where two French Laundry alumni, including a Master Sommelier, turned a serious pedigree into something surprisingly relaxed. The dining room runs a multicourse tasting menu, while the lounge keeps an à la carte list and a dessert trolley that makes a strong case for staying late. Michelin has given it one star, and the wine program is exactly what you'd expect given the résumé.

  34. Rank 432. Zasu

    Contemporary American

A quiet cottage in Mid-City that reads more neighborhood hideaway than Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant, which is a large part of the point. Sue Zemanick keeps the menu tight, maybe a dozen dishes leaning into Gulf seafood and French technique, and the room runs to dark green walls and warm gold tones. The kind of table where nobody rushes you and the food earns the silence. Zasu holds a Michelin star.

  35. Rank 437. Crevette

    Mediterranean Seafood

White tablecloths and cream walls give Crevette the look of a classic European brasserie, but the cooking runs along the coasts of Spain and France with enough color to make you forget Manhattan is outside. This is a proper seafood restaurant, lively and full, with the bar pulling its own crowd. The team behind Lord's and Dame keeps the room humming and the martini list pointed.

  36. Rank 438. Compère Lapin

    New Orleans Caribbean

Curried goat over sweet potato gnocchi is the dish that quietly explains Nina Compton's whole project here. This Caribbean-inflected restaurant sits inside a converted coffee warehouse in the Warehouse Arts District, all exposed brick and mosaic tile, and the menu pulls together her St. Lucia roots, New Orleans flavors, and stints in Florida kitchens. The bar holds its own, and the service runs warm enough that a James Beard Outstanding Hospitality semifinalist nod makes a certain sense.

  37. Pandan waffles and fish sauce bacon on the same menu sounds like a dare, but this counter-service Vietnamese brunch spot on Alberta Street pulls it off without a second thought. Rice bowls, breakfast burritos, and rotating pastries like matcha cinnamon rolls round out a menu that treats Vietnamese American cooking as brunch's natural home. The Vietnamese iced egg coffee reads as dessert and caffeine simultaneously, which covers two needs at once.

  38. Rank 440. Leeward

    Italian

Warm ochre walls, bookshelves stacked with dried flowers, and handmade pasta that regularly lands a James Beard nomination: this cozy Italian restaurant on Free Street is the kind of neighborhood spot that somehow becomes a national conversation. The chef's shapes and sauces pull from whatever local producers are doing well right now, and the wine program is its own reason to linger. Settle in and watch Portland's Arts District do its thing out the window.

  39. Lakeside tables at this swanky steakhouse inside Wynn look out over a waterfall and light show, which gives the white-tablecloth setting a slightly surreal edge. The menu hits every chophouse note, but the draw is the beef program: true Japanese Kobe from Hyogo alongside American wagyu, both with the kind of marbling that makes a menu feel like a financial decision. 40. A little bungalow turned Peruvian ceviche bar where the kitchen leans hard into citrus-cured fish, leche de tigre in several forms, and a pisco sour menu that makes the decision-making easy. The cooking draws from the owners' Peruvian roots, and the flavors are bright and punchy in a way that earns that description. 41. Rank 443. St. Pizza

    Pizzeria

The name is short for "saint," not "street," which tells you something about how seriously they take the bit. A tile-lined slice shop up front gives way, through an actual curtain, to a dim room with dark wood and funk on the speakers. East Coast-style pies, a tight cocktail list, and chicken Parm that earns its place on the menu. Ranked seventh on 50 Top Pizza's Slice USA list, this Magazine Street spot has done real work putting New Orleans on the pizza map.

  43. The open kitchen here runs on live fire: a wood-burning oven, a grill, and a turnspit that turns out roasted pork while chefs pull oysters and raid a glass-windowed vegetable humidor in full view of the dining room. It's a New England restaurant in a high-ceilinged brick warehouse above the Old Port, and a James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur winner. The rope-cultured mussels in garlic-almond butter are the kind of thing regulars order without looking up.

  44. Mandalay's tea leaf salad skips the cabbage most Bay Area Burmese spots default to, landing closer to what you'd find in Myanmar, layered with sesame, peanuts, tomatoes, and fried garlic. It's an old-school Burmese restaurant on California Street that's been around forever without feeling tired. 46. Rank 448. Gusto Bread

    Artisanal Mexican

A Long Beach panadería where the pastries draw on Mexican and Indigenous baking traditions, Gusto Bread makes a kouign-amann with nixtamalized corn folded into sourdough dough, which tells you everything about how the team approaches the classics. Conchas, multigrain loaves, and seasonal pastries round out the case. A James Beard nominee for Outstanding Bakery, it draws visitors from well outside the neighborhood who planned their morning around it.

  47. The wood-grain bar wraps around the pasta station, where sheets are rolled, cut, and hung to dry in full view, which tells you everything about what Sarah Grueneberg is doing at this West Loop Italian spot. Counter stools fill by 5:30, and the regulars who claim them rarely need menus. The cucina tipica runs deeper than pasta, but the pasta is why people talk. A Michelin Selected restaurant.

  49. Rank 452. Xiao Bao

    Pan-Asian

A diner-style Asian restaurant where a giant strawberry guards the door sets the tone for everything inside: Formica tabletops, red velvet couches, and a menu that bounces between hand-pulled noodles topped with brisket and a la zi spiced smash burger on a bao bun with beef fat fries. The retro fever-dream aesthetic is very much the point. The New York Times named it among Nashville's 25 best restaurants.

  50. Rank 453. Pizzeria Sei

    Neo-Neapolitan Pizzeria

The thing that sets this West Pico pizza shop apart is the cornicione, puffy and pinched with a mochi-like chew that signals the Japan-meets-Italy premise before you've taken a proper bite. Individual pies come red or white, traditional or quietly strange, and a counter with a front-row view of the prep keeps the room honest. Ranked second in the country by 50 Top Pizza USA, Pizzeria Sei draws a crowd that treats a Tuesday like a reservation worth keeping.

  52. Rank 455. Verzênay

    French Patisserie

Verzênay is a Lincoln Park patisserie where the French classics arrive in textbook form: chocolate eclairs, crackly kouign-amann, a sourdough baguette that's often still warm. It also keeps an apple pie and a mango passionfruit cheesecake in the case, which the French would presumably allow. The Chicago macaron, filled with caramel, popcorn, and cheddar, is a Garrett Popcorn tribute in cookie form. Saturday mornings call for an early alarm.

The carriage house bones are the whole point: a fireplace center stage in winter, and windows that swing open onto a cobblestoned side street in summer, letting Barrow Street essentially become part of the room. This is a fine dining institution that New Yorkers bring people to when they want the city to do the heavy lifting, which it does without much trouble. The kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion.

  56. One seating a night, about twenty guests, and chef Ling Qi Wu cooking in front of you: that's the whole deal at this dinner party-style Chinese tasting menu tucked into a strip mall on Research Blvd. Dumplings arrive shaped like animals with fillings like steamed lobster and crawfish with XO sauce, and duck with foie gras and caviar shows up alongside a bao bun with a cutout in it, somehow both silly and serious. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

  57. Rank 460. Spoon and Stable

    Modern French

The building was a working stable once, and the vaulted ceilings and warm brick still carry that memory into what is now one of Minneapolis's most celebrated dinner destinations. Chef Gavin Kaysen runs a Midwestern French kitchen where the seasonal sourcing is taken seriously without being announced at you. A 2025 James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist, it draws a dressed-up but not stiff crowd happy to linger over heritage grain pasta and a very good cocktail.

  58. The line down the block on weekends is a reliable feature, and so is the sign that says they've sold out early. Radio Bakery is a small Greenpoint spot where croissants get shaped like Danishes and filled with whatever's good that month, focaccia sandwiches come stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and the brown butter corn cake is the thing to grab for later. Frustrating in all the right ways.

  60. Wood-firing and smoking do most of the heavy lifting at this fine dining spot on Milwaukee's east side, where the chef draws on Southern roots, time on the line at Gramercy Tavern, and a stretch in New Orleans to shape a menu that reads rustic but cooks with real precision. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and the James Beard Foundation named the chef a semifinalist. The garlic focaccia and the charred beef tartare each make a convincing case on their own.

  61. A small-plates restaurant in Walker's Point where the chile crisp deviled eggs tend to set the tone for the rest of the meal. The menu wanders from massaman curry to duck confit agnolotti without apology, and the cocktails are craft without being a whole thing about it. A portion of each featured drink goes to a rotating charity, which covers a lot of ground between Doctors Without Borders and the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association. 62. Rank 465. Bar Miller

    Modern Sushi

Bold colors and custom ceramics set the tone at this tiny omakase counter on the Lower East Side, where the whole vibe runs warmer and looser than the austere hush you might expect. The Michelin-starred kitchen leans into North American sourcing, using New York-grown rice and regional fish, with trim and offcuts turned into a house tostada. Local wine, beer, and cider round out a sake list that runs from Brooklyn to Japan.

  63. The barrel-vaulted ceiling and windowless room give Lielle the feeling of a place that doesn't need to be found easily. It's a tasting menu restaurant on Pico, holding a Michelin star, where chef Marcus Jernmark runs Californian cooking through a precise European sensibility without tipping into fussiness. Scoring a reservation takes some effort, and the room, once you're in it, is intimate enough to make that feel deliberate.

This is a tasting menu restaurant in Greenpoint where the chef's classic French training and Japanese background meet in a warehouse-scale dining room. Shellfish and proteins carry the menu, and a duck and foie gras pastry feels like a find from a more extravagant era. It holds a Michelin star.

  71. Rank 475. Fearing's

    Southwestern American

Dean Fearing's restaurant inside the Ritz-Carlton looks like a traditional steakhouse until the food arrives. It's a polished Southwestern dining room where the menu wanders confidently into buffalo and antelope territory alongside filets, and a carpaccio riff assembles tuna, wagyu, salmon, and barbecued eel into something resembling stained glass. The kind of place that earns a Forbes Four Star and still manages to serve a baklava s'more without embarrassing itself.

  72. Rank 476. Cocina Chiwas

    Modern Chihuahuan Bistro

Mesquite and pecan wood smoke drifts out of the open kitchen at this Chihuahuan-rooted restaurant inside Tempe's Culdesac neighborhood, where the grill does serious work on meats, peppers, and open-faced quesadillas. The team behind Tacos Chiwas built something more personal here, moving from taqueria to family table. Moles, micheladas, and brunch dishes like concha French toast fill out a menu that runs morning to night. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur semifinalist in 2024.

  74. Rank 478. Frevo

    Creative French

A speakeasy entrance in Greenwich Village opens onto a chef's counter tasting menu that pulls from South America, Asia, and wherever else the kitchen feels like going that night. The room is intimate and design-forward, and the team works in full view, which turns dinner into something closer to a performance. It holds a Michelin star. The aged Comté paired with honey ice cream has apparently become the dessert regulars mention unprompted on the way out.

  75. Rank 479. Oak Park

    Modern American

A 5,000-bottle wine cellar sits beneath a modern American dining room in a residential Des Moines neighborhood, and the kitchen leans hard on an on-site garden for its produce. The chef couple behind it trained at Michelin-starred restaurants abroad before landing here, which may explain the tables booked out for months. The dessert menu runs from a $4 chocolate-fig bar to a $100 banana split, which tells you most of what you need to know about the range.

  76. Rank 480. Hav & Mar

The room is full Formica-and-chrome diner, but the menu quietly goes sideways: a Reuben folded into a quesadilla, a wedge salad hit with chile crisp. The chef earned a James Beard nomination in 2024. Go for the curries and the som tum, and expect heat you'll want to chase with the fruit salad.

  88. Rank 493. Sofreh

    Persian

Nasim Alikhani spent decades as a home cook in the Iranian diaspora before opening this Persian restaurant in Park Slope at 58, which explains why the food feels like someone's mother finally decided to show the city what she'd been holding back. Whitewashed brick, marble bar, black wood beams. The kitchen is faithful to Persian tradition but loose enough to foam a yogurt or call a pomegranate-marinated rib-eye a kebab. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef New York State.

Midcentury-sunny room, long lines of people who planned ahead, and beignets that won Nashville Scene's city-wide vote.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
