  1. Rank 501. Mindy’s Bakery

    Rustic Bakery

Mindy's is a Wicker Park bakery where the menu shifts often enough to keep regulars guessing, running from donuts to pot pies, with the occasional turnover stuffed with mortadella and giardiniera. The bagels get plenty of attention too. The room is tiny and there are only a couple of window seats, so most people end up eating in the car, which is fine, since crumbs are cheaper to vacuum than to explain.

  2. Rank 502. Junior

    French

Red leather banquettes, white tablecloths, a snappy U-shaped bar, and a shiny open kitchen pack into fifty seats on Dickerson Pike. This is a French-leaning dinner spot where smoke drifts in from a Basque-style wood-fire hearth and the wine list has Brooklyn credentials. Philip Krajeck's third Nashville restaurant has landed on the New York Times' list of Nashville's 25 best, which for a room this quietly romantic feels about right.

  3. Rank 503. Barbs B Q

    Central Texas Barbecue

Barbs B Q is a weekend-only BBQ shop in Lockhart that draws hours-long lines on Saturdays and Sundays, which is the only time the pitmaster opens the doors. The compact menu runs classic smoked meats with unexpected turns, like pork ribs finished with lime zest and turkey with a black pepper rub. Texas Monthly, Bon Appétit, and the New York Times have all taken notice, and the Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

  6. The handwritten menu changes so often it might be different by the time you finish reading it, which is either thrilling or exhausting depending on your disposition. This cozy New American restaurant in Hazel Park, helmed by chef James Rigato, runs on mismatched vintage plates, eclectic decor, a gothic wine cave, and produce largely grown by Rigato's partner. Named to USA Today's Restaurants of the Year list in 2025.

  7. A Strip diner that has been waving off the casino buffets for decades, with fake trees, flamingo lamps, and enough neon to make the omelets feel like a decision. Out back, the lounge has sunken booths, water features, and scorpion bowls, a James Beard America's Classics winner that somehow still runs all night. Hungover tourists and bikers split plates of marinara-soaked eggs, and no one finds this strange.

  9. Rank 509. Nightshade Noodle Bar

    Vietnamese Noodle Shop

Uni custard with brown butter, red curry hollandaise, and a torch of cinnamon tells you immediately where you stand: somewhere north of Boston that plays by its own rules. Nightshade Noodle Bar in Lynn is a tasting-format noodle restaurant with a kitchen that treats cuisine borders as suggestions. The room is a black box, the playlist is loud, and the team is warm. Rachel Miller was a James Beard semifinalist in 2025, and the Times put it on their Boston list.

  10. Rank 509. Saffron NOLA

    New Orleans Indian Bistro

The copper accents and rich-hued interior visible through the Magazine Street window signal a sophisticated Indian restaurant that takes New Orleans ingredients as seriously as its spice rack. A family-run kitchen, it finds the overlap between Indian classics and Southern tradition, landing somewhere around curried seafood gumbo, which shouldn't work as well as it does. A James Beard nominee and a New York Times pick for the city's best.

  14. The chef still works the line most nights, which tells you something about a creative restaurant that's been an Old Town Scottsdale fixture long enough to feel inevitable. Vegetables are taken seriously here, pulled from Arizona farms and steered through a menu that drifts from the Sonoran Desert to the Levant without announcing itself. The wine list leans hard into Arizona producers, and the tucked-away bar is a fine place to work through both.

  15. Rank 514. HaiSous

    Vietnamese

The menu at this Vietnamese restaurant in Pilsen is split into five sections and leans into lesser-known dishes, the kind that make you feel like you've been missing something for years. The room offers an open kitchen with counter seats, a cocktail bar, and two dining rooms, one with communal tables. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. 16. Rank 516. Firstborn

    Innovative Chinese-American

Tucked into Mandarin Plaza on Broadway, this contemporary Chinese American restaurant and bar is the project of a first-generation chef cooking his own story onto the plate. The cocktail program is serious enough to earn national bartender recognition, so start there before the food arrives. Dishes are built for sharing, the kitchen is open to the room, and the whole setup feels more like a dinner party than a transaction.

  17. A converted firehouse turned wine bar with a retail shop stocking over 200 bottles you can also drink on the spot. The menu rotates around whatever the chef's neighbor harvests from the garden across the street, which keeps things genuinely seasonal in a way most places only claim. The backyard runs to lawn chairs and picnic blankets, with DJs on weekends. It landed on the New York Times Restaurant List and Bon Appétit's Best New Restaurants in the same year.

  18. Roman pizza comes out of an open kitchen at this spacious trattoria in the West Loop, where Joe Flamm followed up Rose Mary with a full homage to the Eternal City. The pasta is made on-site, the wine list is all-Italian, and the amaro cocktails are worth staying for. Carciofo alla giudia, the deep-fried artichoke the place is named for, gives you a pretty clear sense of where the kitchen's priorities lie.

  20. Rank 522. Le Pigeon

    Modern French

The foie gras profiteroles have been on the dessert menu so long they've become a Portland landmark in their own right. Gabriel Rucker's modern French tasting spot on East Burnside has been doing ambitious, slightly unhinged prix fixe since forever, the kind of cooking where sturgeon pastrami with caviar shows up next to a vegetarian finger sandwich and both feel inevitable. A James Beard semifinalist, and still the room where Portland chefs go to be impressed.

  21. Rank 523. Heritage Barbecue

    Central Texas Barbecue

The smoke from California white oak drifts into the parking lot long before you reach the door, which is by design and also a warning to arrive early. Heritage is a Texas barbecue shop in San Juan Capistrano where the line forms fast and brisket runs out faster. The chef earned a James Beard nomination and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the trays of charred, glistening meat make both feel self-explanatory. Save room for the banana pudding.

  22. Rank 524. Queen's English

    Modern Cantonese

A yellow neon sign greets you at the door of this small Columbia Heights restaurant, and everything inside quietly contradicts it: white floors, blue banquettes, geometric screens carving out private nooks. The menu runs through modern Hong Kong cooking, the kind where high-heat wok technique meets unexpected pairings. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the chef picked up a James Beard nomination for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  23. The patio looks out over the 18th hole of Torrey Pines Golf Course, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe: California-casual with a country-club undercurrent, Craftsman beams and amber lanterns inside. The kitchen leans hard into Southern California's year-round growing season, so the California New American menu shifts with what's actually good. A AAA Four Diamond fine dining restaurant where the dress code is implied but never oppressive.

  24. Rank 526. Pizz’amici

    Old-School Pizzeria

Pizz'amici is a tavern-style pizza shop in West Town, where the thin, cracker-crisp crust gets charred on the bottom and cut into squares. It's a nostalgic room with a pepperoni Negroni on the menu, plus tall focaccia and sausage and peppers for the old-school completists. Tables go quickly, so plan ahead or order carryout, which is easier than winning the lottery and only slightly less crowded.

  25. Rank 527. Daisies

    Italian

Pasta and vegetables carry most of the weight here, at this bright, sun-flooded Italian restaurant in Logan Square that holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The house-made pappardelle and rigatoni keep regulars coming back, but the onion dip with house-made ruffles has become a thing people talk about. A bakery tucked in the back means the pastry situation at the end of a meal is genuinely hard to navigate. The bar program turns heads too, a James Beard semifinalist for hospitality.

  26. Rank 527. Husk

    Southern

The historic two-story Queen Street house has its own garden out front, which tells you something about how seriously this Southern restaurant takes its sourcing. Seafood arrives in seasoned broths, the cornbread has inspired genuine reverence, and the pimento cheese with country ham is the kind of opener that makes the rest of the menu feel like bonus rounds. Reservations are scarce, and a sidewalk queue forms before the doors open most evenings.

  28. Duck dusted with jerk seasoning, served alongside rice and peas and Haitian pikliz, tells you what kind of neighborhood restaurant this is: one where the African diaspora, South Asia, and the Caribbean are all at the same table. 29. Rank 531. Valley

    Wine Bar

A backyard patio that somehow feels like a secret, even though Sonoma Plaza is right there. Valley is a neighborhood wine bar and bottle shop where the list leans into organic and biodynamic bottles from corners of California you haven't thought to explore yet. The short menu of small plates is built for sharing and changes often, with a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod confirming the kitchen punches well above its modest ambitions.

  30. Rank 532. Noodle in a Haystack

    Modern Ramen Shop

A ramen omakase in the Richmond where the noodle is the main character, not a supporting act. The team built their name through pop-ups and global competitions before landing in this small corner space, and the tasting menu shows the range, broths that shift from delicate to deeply rich across several courses. It runs at a fine-dining pace and price, so dress one notch up from your usual bowl-of-ramen energy.

  31. Rank 533. Seabird

    Southern Seafood

Swordfish schnitzel doesn't show up on many Southern seafood menus, but Dean Neff, a James Beard Outstanding Chef nominee, has that kind of restless disposition. Seabird is a full-service seafood restaurant on the Wilmington waterfront, nautical in feel without leaning on the clichés, serving dinner and weekend brunch. The catfish and grits crowd and the caviar deviled eggs crowd somehow occupy the same room, and neither seems bothered by the other.

  32. Rank 534. Copra

    South Indian

The name refers to dried coconut meat, which tells you roughly where the kitchen's head is at. Srijith Gopinathan's South Indian restaurant fills a lush, two-story corner room in the Fillmore that photographs well and eats even better. The sharing menu runs from a palette of housemade chutneys with pappadom to shell-on crab curry, the kind of sticky, tamarind-dark sauce that renders your outfit a casualty. A James Beard semifinalist and ranked fourth on the Chronicle's Bay Area top 100.

  33. Dim sum from a chef who treats borders as loose suggestions, set inside a ground-floor office building in Coral Gables that looks like it should house a dentist. The dumplings started as a pop-up and earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod before finding a permanent home here. The cooking pulls from China, Japan, and Italy in the same breath, and somehow it coheres. A Niman Ranch short rib filling alongside charred cabbage in chili butter will tell you more than any summary.

  35. Rank 537. Cochon

    Cajun & Creole

A converted warehouse in the Central Business District, Cochon does Southern cooking with a Louisiana accent: wood-fired oysters, fried alligator, gumbo loaded with house-made andouille, and rabbit and dumplings pulled from the chef's family recipes. The cracklins with Steen's cane syrup make a strong case for arriving hungry. The whiskey and bourbon list is long enough to make the decision feel important. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  36. Rank 538. Mutra

    Middle Eastern

Named for the chef's grandmother, this Michelin-starred Israeli restaurant in North Miami pulls its menu from hyperlocal ingredients and rotates dishes often enough that running out of something is part of the deal. The chef's counter is where you want to be, watching Middle Eastern flavors get handled with quiet precision. The staff reads the room well enough to steer you through whatever's left, which turns out to be a feature, not a bug.

  37. Marble-top bar, globe pendants, and coffee-brown tables give this Basque restaurant on the Lower East Side a midcentury feel that somehow never reads as costume. The room runs loud and convivial, the way a good tapas night should, and everything is built for sharing. The wine list leans deep into small Spanish organic and biodynamic producers, which is either very convenient or a very pleasant trap, depending on your evening.

  38. Rows of labeled spice jars line the walls, which tells you something about how seriously this contemporary Indian restaurant takes its pantry. The chef sources ingredients from his own farm and runs a tight menu that swings between fiery naan and delicate tuna bhel without losing focus. 40. Rank 542. Lord's

    British

A nose-to-tail British bistro in the Village where the duck-stuffed cabbage arrives large enough to feed a small party. The team behind Dame brought the same easy warmth here: cozy banquettes, unhurried service, and bar stools held for walk-ins even on a packed night. The menu leans into hearty English classics with just enough creative wobble to stay interesting. Food & Wine named the chef a Best New Chef in 2023, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed.

Dum biryani folded with lamb barbacoa is a reasonable sign that this Bucktown restaurant is not picking a lane between Mexican and Indian, and has no intention of starting. Mediterranean

The entire room is wood-plank from floor to ceiling, which either reads as cozy or a fire hazard, depending on your mood. This West Randolph wine restaurant has been packed since forever, with regulars jostling for counter stools and close-set tables to graze through a seasonal Mediterranean menu. 43. The Jucy Lucy, spelled without the "i" and stuffed with molten cheese between two beef patties, is the whole reason Matt's Bar exists and possibly the whole reason Minneapolis exists. This divey neighborhood bar on Cedar Avenue has been doing exactly one thing forever, and the pleather booths and unadorned bar haven't changed to accommodate anyone, including a former president who stopped in. Order the burger, wait for the cheese to cool slightly, and learn from whoever's nearby why the spelling matters.

  44. The bread comes from Amelia's next door, and at this neighborhood restaurant it earns its place at every table, not just in the basket. The menu rotates daily around Indiana farms and whatever the season demands, so regulars never quite order the same meal twice. Chef Alan Sternberg has been a James Beard semifinalist multiple times over, and the 2025 nod for Outstanding Hospitality explains the room as much as the food does.

    Sushi

Bluefin maguro topped with a Georgian sauce of apricots and walnuts gives you the idea fast: this is an omakase counter where the chef treats Edomae sushi as a starting point rather than a finish line. The meal builds like a composed piece, lighter sashimi giving way to richer bites, before landing on A5 Wagyu and foie gras lacquered with chocolate balsamic. Nancy Silverton's pizzeria has been an LA institution forever, with bare wood tables, skylights, and a Bib Gourmand to its name. 49. This is a José Andrés steakhouse inside The Venetian, and the open kitchen is basically a stage for a very large fire. Bone-in wagyu ribeyes get charred there, while the menu also stocks Ibérico ham and an aged-cow beef most steakhouses skip. Caviar comes in single-bite cones, which tells you about the tax bracket. Dress like you're celebrating something, since most tables are.

  50. Rank 551. Plow

    American

The lemon-ricotta silver dollar pancakes here have a following that generates a line down the block most weekend mornings, which tells you everything about what kind of brunch spot Plow is. It's a casual, easygoing neighborhood place in Potrero Hill with a tight, unfussy menu built around a few things done carefully. Korean

A modern Korean tasting menu tucked near the Flatiron, where the room, all soaring ceilings and low light, hums at the kind of pitch that makes a Tuesday feel like an event. The chef pulls from Korean tradition without treating it as a costume, running dry-aged fish and wood-fired lamb alongside dishes rooted in the peninsula. It holds a Michelin star, and the room on any given night suggests the regulars already knew that.

  52. A private counter hidden inside a sister restaurant, with one seating a night and a handful of seats that disappear the moment reservations open. Chef Yasuhiro Hirano's omakase leans on aged fish and unexpected pairings, producing nigiri and small courses that feel unlike what more familiar names are doing across town. It holds a Michelin star, and the Los Angeles Times put it among the city's best.

  53. The restroom walls are lined with illustrated wine descriptions, which tells you exactly what kind of neighborhood restaurant this is. A cozy Columbia Heights pasta house and wine bar, Reveler's Hour runs a rotating slate of seasonal Italian small plates under arched ceilings and muted green tiles. The sommelier who co-owns the place steers you toward bottles you've never encountered, and the housemade pasta is the thing to build an order around.

Vanilla soft serve finished with olive oil from the owner's Italian vineyard tells you plenty about what kind of place this is: a neighborhood cookshop in North Naples where the kitchen is having fun and doesn't mind if you notice. Steakhouse

Chef John Tesar's chophouse inside the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes fills a large, dimly lit room done in weathered wood and beachy tones, with an open kitchen in the back and a well-stocked bar up front. Dry-aged steaks share the menu with top-shelf seafood and pastas that take a turn nobody saw coming, cacio e pepe made with ube noodles being the kind of detail that earns the conversation. The cocktail list keeps pace.

  59. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the Pacific at this fine dining room inside the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, where sunset turns the whole place gold about halfway through your second course. The cooking is polished contemporary California, classical in technique and easy in register, the kind of meal where luxury is implied rather than announced. A Michelin Selected Restaurant holding AAA Four Diamonds and a Forbes Four Star.

  60. A gilded woolly mammoth by Damien Hirst anchors the courtyard outside, and the gold-domed dining room inside doesn't exactly dial it down. This hotel restaurant at the Faena runs a short menu that pulls from across Asia, loosely interpreted, with dishes that move between sweet, savory, and spicy in the same bite. The kind of place where the room is doing a lot of work, and the food quietly keeps pace.

  61. Rank 560. Primo

    Contemporary Italian

The copper kitchen gleams open to the dining room, so you can watch the brigade work while you eat. This is the hotel restaurant at JW Marriott Grande Lakes, doing contemporary Italian with enough confidence that it doesn't feel like a hotel restaurant. Small plates, housemade pasta, and roast chicken in parmesan brodo sit alongside each other without apology. The room runs to booths and banquettes in soft, muted tones, and the bread arrives before anything needs deciding.

It earned a James Beard Outstanding Bakery nomination in 2024 and a semifinalist nod in 2026.

The kitchen riffs on classic Filipino flavors rather than replicate them, and the open kitchen keeps things convivial for a neighborhood spot. A James Beard nominee, it draws the kind of crowd that actually reads the menu before they sit down.

  68. Seven ovens, eleven styles of pizza, and one corner spot in North Beach that takes the whole argument about which regional pie is superior and simply refuses to pick a side. Tony Gemignani's pizzeria runs Neapolitan next to Detroit next to New Haven next to Roman, all under one roof, which is either heresy or the only sane position. It lands at number two on 50 Top Pizza USA and number ten in the world.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
