  1. The burritos here skip the rice, which Mission purists treat as either heresy or gospel depending on which taqueria they grew up on. Order yours dorado-style and the kitchen presses it on the plancha until the tortilla blisters gold. Counter service, cash-register lines out the door, no frills beyond the food. The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times have both made the pilgrimage to this old-school Mission taqueria, which tells you something about the burritos.

  2. Rank 702. Menya Rui

    Ramen Shop

The noodle machine has its own little vestibule off the dining room, which tells you where priorities lie at this 24-seat ramen shop. The chef spent years in Japanese noodle kitchens before opening here, and it shows in the tsukemen, thick cold noodles you dip into hot broth, and the brothless mazemen tossed in scallop or chile oil. Food & Wine named him a Best New Chef. The line out front moves faster than it looks.

  3. Rank 703. Parish Barbecue

    Central Texas Barbecue

A Creole barbecue trailer parked behind a kolache shop is either a strange detour or exactly the point, and at Parish it's the point. Cajun spice rubs and Tabasco glazes nudge central Texas classics sideways, and the menu runs past brisket into pulled duck and boudin. Sides like pimento mac topped with Zapp's chips and crawfish cornbread stuffing do their own convincing. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  4. The name comes from the sprinkler company that occupied the space before, which is either a great origin story or a reminder that Birmingham contains multitudes. Adam Evans, a James Beard Award winner, runs this seafood restaurant out of a 5,000-square-foot room in Lakeview, with a raw bar up front and a menu built around regional fin fish, Southern sides, and the kind of collard greens that make you reconsider every other collard green you've had.

  5. The Tavern is a downtown Tulsa pub built around a two-handed burger of short rib, chuck, and brisket, wearing stilton, a cognac-mushroom cream, and a challah bun like it's dressing for a wedding. The recipe hasn't changed in ages, and the neighborhood's dining scene more or less grew up around it. Expect pub prices, napkins in bulk, and a restaurateur nod from the James Beard semifinalists.

  6. Desert-toned walls and a condensed, always-shifting wine list set the mood at this neo-bistro and wine bar on Seventh Street. The team pulls from old and new world bottles for both pours and a rotating spritz selection, while small plates from the kitchen give you a reason to stay for another glass. A James Beard semifinalist for Best New Bar, it draws the kind of crowd that actually talks to the table next to them.

  8. Rank 707. Garrison

    American

The open kitchen runs long and hot, with live fire doing most of the talking at this upscale American restaurant inside the Fairmont Austin. The menu moves between bright, acid-forward starters and serious grilled meat, so a table here tends to drift toward the Akaushi wagyu by the end of the night. The cooking holds its own well away from hotel-restaurant expectations, which is saying something in a city with no shortage of smoke and ambition.

  11. A welcome sangria at the door, a poem written for the menu, and a bouquet arranged by the chef's mom set the tone at this intimate tasting menu spot tucked behind an unremarkable door on Madison. The chef earned a James Beard nomination in 2026, and the kitchen rotates its menu completely every few weeks, chasing the season. The counter seats feel less like a restaurant and more like a dinner party thrown by someone who thought of everything.

  12. A Michelin-starred tempura tasting counter in Murray Hill where the chef uses a blend of sesame and cottonseed oils and keeps the batter deliberately thin, letting the ingredient do the talking. Counter seats give you a front-row view of the whole process. The menu moves with the seasons, running from sashimi through a procession of fried courses, and closing with tencha, a broth that turns out to be a quietly convincing argument for ending a meal with soup.

  13. Rank 712. Tuome

    Chinese

Thomas Chen's East Village fine dining room sits behind bay windows with a backlit bar and purple seats that somehow avoid feeling precious. The menu moves between Asian traditions and classical technique in ways that feel considered rather than calculated, and the Michelin-starred kitchen earns its star without announcing it at every turn. Service knows the food cold but doesn't lecture. A neighborhood room that quietly does serious work.

  14. The rib cap roulade sitting in a shallow queso-ish pool of Jasper Hill cheese, acidified with miso chimichurri, tells you everything about what's happening at this seasonal Colorado dining room. The chef calls the cooking "seasonal Colorado cuisine," which means Southwestern and Mexican flavors running through a menu that keeps proposing combinations you're not sure will work. They do. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and a James Beard nomination for Outstanding Chef followed.

  15. The twice-fried bacon has its own reputation in this city, which tells you something about how long the Avila family has been getting things right on East 7th. Joe's is an all-day breakfast shop and Tex-Mex bakery, built-in booths and no pretension, with migas tacos on house-made flour tortillas and a bakery case full of conchas. A 2023 James Beard America's Classics winner, which is the kind of honor a place earns by being itself for decades.

  16. Pupusas made with heirloom corn, stuffed with seasonal produce, and cooked over a wood flame set the tone at this live-fire restaurant in Old Oakland, where the menu moves between Salvadoran and Mexican traditions. The New York Times called out the guacamole with tortillas brushed in asiento, pork lard left over from making chicharrón. Bon Appétit named it one of America's best new restaurants, and the San Francisco Chronicle ranks it among the Bay Area's top ten.

  17. Kaya toast on pillowy bread striped with coconut-pandan jam is the thing people cite first, but the menu at this Asian American bakery on Clement Street rotates enough to keep regulars guessing. Pan de sal buns cradle egg salad with panko-fried veg, and the Basque cheesecake is cut thick enough to feel like a statement. Outdoor seating only, but the line moves. 18. Rank 718. Chambers

    Wine Bar

Pascaline Lepeltier, one of a handful of Master Sommeliers in the world, built the wine list here, and it shows: back vintages, unexpected producers, prices that don't require a quiet moment alone with your bank app. The food runs from composed salads to fresh pasta, all of it seasonal and sharper than the "wine bar snacks" framing might suggest. A James Beard nominee for its beverages program, and sitting at number 29 on the Times' 100 Best list.

  19. Rank 719. EsterEv

    Seasonal Chinese

A four-course tasting menu in Bay View where the chef's Top Chef celebrity lands a little lighter than you'd expect. Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite run a focused, seasonal room, the kind where you follow the menu wherever it leads, from liver mousse and shrimp toast toward squash with red curry or something involving boudin blanc. A James Beard Nominee for Best Chef Midwest, the duo earns the room's easy trust.

  20. Rank 720. Daru

    Indian

The Sanskrit logo rings the window of this lively neighborhood Indian restaurant on a Capitol Hill corner, and the sidewalk fills up the moment the weather cooperates. The kitchen, run by Rasika veterans, takes classic Indian cuisine sideways, folding blue cheese into tandoor chicken kebabs and sending minced bison into momos. A Michelin Bib Gourmand for a room that buzzes rather than whispers.

  21. Vintage mirrors, cherry wood, and brass gas chandeliers give this Downtown Brooklyn steakhouse an amber glow that makes every Tuesday feel like an occasion. Dessert gets taken seriously, which a baked Alaska deserves. It has a spot on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

  22. Wood smoke hits you before the menu does, drifting from a 20-foot hearth that anchors the open kitchen at this fine dining live-fire restaurant in downtown Austin. Nearly everything on the à la carte and tasting menus passes through flame or picks up smoke along the way, with Texas produce and proteins doing the heavy lifting. It holds a Michelin star, and the room draws the kind of crowd that books months out and still looks pleased about it.

  23. A chef's counter tucked into the ground floor of a South End rowhouse, where the ceramics alone, sourced from Kyoto and Asheville, suggest someone sweated every detail. The omakase moves through cooked preparations before the nigiri arrives, much of the fish imported from Japan. It holds a Michelin star, which fits: this is the kind of quiet, serious room where the fish does all the talking.

  24. Rank 723. bōm

    Korean

A marble counter with built-in grills running quietly all evening sets the mood at this intimate tasting counter tucked behind Oiji Mi. The kitchen leans hard into luxury, stacking wagyu, uni, caviar, and truffle onto contemporary Korean courses without much apology. A dry-aging chamber sits in full view, so you watch dinner aging while you eat it. One Michelin star.

  25. Rank 723. Chef's Counter at MAASS

    Contemporary Pan-Asian

Eight seats face an open kitchen inside the Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale, which is about as good a view as a tasting menu gets. The chef's team works through a contemporary New American menu that pulls from French technique and Japanese ingredients, with Florida slipping in where it belongs. A Michelin star keeps it honest. Dress accordingly, and maybe clear the next morning.

  26. Rank 723. Citrin

    Seasonal French

Citrin sits in the same building as the tasting-menu-only Mélisse, but it offers a more flexible format, with prix-fixe and à la carte alongside each other. The kitchen runs on French technique and California produce, classical at the bone but with modern, global instincts. Caviar and truffle upgrades are available for the inclined, though the cooking holds its own without them. It holds a Michelin star.

  27. Rank 723. Corridor 109

    Japanese

Eleven seats at a counter, hidden behind a door inside Bar 109 in Melrose Hill, with reservations that will take some planning to secure. Corridor 109 is a seafood tasting counter where the chef draws mostly from Japanese fisheries, serving much of it raw with a Japanese-leaning sensibility. The single non-seafood course, wagyu over oxtail jus, lands near the end like a punctuation mark on an otherwise ocean-driven menu.

  28. Rank 723. Ebbe

    Contemporary Nordic

A U-shaped marble bar dominates the room at this downtown Tampa tasting-menu spot, where the chef's Swedish roots quietly steer everything on the plate. One menu, no choices, and the cooking is precise without being fussy, leaning on fermentation, Nordic technique, and very good sourcing. It holds a Michelin star and draws the kind of crowd that books a month out and still feels like they got lucky.

  29. Rank 723. Emelina

    Modern Cuban

A handful of counter seats face an open kitchen where the team is quietly asking what Cuban food could be if it kept its roots and borrowed ideas from everywhere else. The Michelin-starred result is a tasting-counter experience that feels personal rather than performative, with most ingredients coming from South Florida farms and ranches. Expect refined, composed cooking: familiar flavors refracted just enough to stop you mid-bite.

  30. A converted Craftsman in the Rose Park neighborhood, far enough from the Long Beach waterfront to feel like a local secret. Heritage holds a Michelin star and runs a single multicourse tasting menu, priced more modestly than you'd expect, built around produce from the team's own nearby farm. The California cooking leans seasonal and fruit-forward throughout, savory and sweet alike. The sibling duo running the kitchen and floor keep things unhurried without losing the thread.

  31. Rank 723. Hiden

    Sushi

A Wynwood omakase that earns its Michelin star behind a sliding door with a time-sensitive passcode, which is either thrilling or mildly stressful depending on your punctuality. Inside, Chef Seijun Okano runs a compact counter where fish arrives from Japan multiple times a week, pressed into vinegar-seasoned rice made fresh each service. Questions are encouraged, drinks flow, and the playlist keeps things from getting too reverent.

  32. This is the chef's counter tucked inside a glass-and-marble box in the West End, a tasting-menu room with seats for only a handful, so reservations are less a plan than a negotiation. The kitchen cooks Latin American flavors with a lot of precision, and the whole thing carries a Michelin star. Expect tasting-menu pricing and the hushed, slightly reverent posture of people who booked months ago and intend to remember it.

Red curtains separate the bar from the dining room at this Michelin-starred Hollywood steakhouse on Melrose, and the lipstick carpet does the rest of the atmosphere's heavy lifting. 34. Kappo Kappo is a tasting-menu counter tucked inside the Austin Proper Hotel, run by twin brothers who grew up in Paris and cook French-Japanese. It holds a Michelin star, yet it skips the hushed, monastic omakase routine. The L-shaped counter is chatty, the brothers swap life stories between courses, and the whole thing runs closer to dinner with two well-traveled hosts than a silent exam. Plan on a splurge.

  35. Rank 723. KOJIMA

    Japanese

A Michelin-starred counter tucked into the second floor of a Sawtelle strip mall, which tells you something about Los Angeles. Chef Hayato Kojima runs an intimate omakase for a handful of diners at once, no printed menu, no fixed courses, just whatever he sourced that morning explained warmly by staff who bridge the language gap. Everyone eats together, so arrive on time or the whole table waits.

    The awards

  36. Rank 723. Kōsen

    Sushi

Dark walls instead of the expected blonde wood set the tone at this intimate Tampa omakase counter, which holds a Michelin star. The chef runs the progression with quiet precision, moving from composed kitchen courses into nigiri that leans traditional without a lot of ceremony. The sushi speaks for itself, which in a genre that can tip into theater is its own kind of statement.

    The awards

  37. Rank 723. Koya

    Contemporary Japanese

A tight counter in Tampa running a multicourse contemporary Japanese tasting menu, with a Michelin star to its name. The kitchen pulls bluefin tuna and uni from Tokyo's Toyosu Market weekly, then does unexpected things with them, pairing wagyu with aged parmesan or turbot in a tomato-miso emulsion. The pacing is unhurried, the team genuinely chatty, and a solid list of premium sakes by the glass gives you something to debate between courses.

  38. A converted farmhouse in North Salem with sweeping views of actual countryside, which somehow makes the tasting menu feel earned rather than theatrical. This is a Michelin-starred modern French fine dining room with very few tables, run by a husband-and-wife team whose roots are in the south of France. The cooking is precise and quietly confident, and dessert gets its own moment to shine. Esquire named the Vesper martini among the finest in America, which is a strange fact about a farmhouse, and a good one.

Chef Sungchul Shim, who built his reputation just down the street at Kochi, runs a counter where chefs work in full view on every side, wrapping pristine fish and rice in seaweed at a deliberate pace. 41. Tangled greenery, trance music, and moody lighting set the scene at Jordan Kahn's tasting menu restaurant on Melrose, where the room feels like a forest you wandered into by accident. The cooking is live-fire and zero-waste, pulling from sustainably sourced wild and organic ingredients, and the drinks follow the same logic, no refined sugars anywhere. It holds a Michelin star, which tracks for food this particular about its own convictions.

  42. Rank 723. Miura

A satin-smooth wood counter on the second floor of the Two Rodeo Drive galleria, where Rodeo Drive's foot traffic floats by below and Derek Wilcox runs a quiet, focused omakase above it. 43. The dining room sits quietly above a working brewery, which tells you something about priorities here. Moody Tongue is a Michelin-starred tasting menu spot on the South Side where the beer pairing is treated as seriously as the food, not as an afterthought for people who skipped the wine list. The room is dim and close, the kind of place where a weeknight feels like an occasion whether you planned it that way or not.

    The awards

  44. Rank 723. noda

    Sushi

Eight seats behind a half-moon counter, tucked past the cocktail lounge like a room that doesn't want to be found. Noda is an omakase spot with a Michelin star and a genuine speakeasy mood, dark and close, where the chef moves through each piece of nigiri with a calm precision that makes the room go quiet. A deep sake list and vintage Champagne round things out, which is either restrained luxury or showing off, depending on your table.

    The awards

  45. Hidden behind Sugarfish in Beverly Hills, this jewel-box omakase counter operates as its own thing entirely, with no connection to the chain out front. The chef, a traditionalist who still finds room for surprises, runs a tight sequence of nigiri, sashimi, and handrolls built around exceptional seafood. It holds a Michelin star, and the room seats few enough that you're watching every cut happen in front of you.

  47. Rank 723. Pasta|Bar

    Modern Italian

A tasting menu restaurant tucked into a strip mall on Ventura Boulevard, which is either a joke or a dare. The format is intimate and genuinely theatrical: drinks and a snack up front in a bar, then a procession of modern Italian-leaning pasta courses that push well past Italian tradition. The cooking holds a Michelin star, and the staff seem to know it without being insufferable about it.

  48. Rank 723. R|O-Rebel Omakase

    Creative Sushi

A Michelin-starred omakase counter tucked into a Laguna Beach strip mall, which is either a joke or a lesson in not judging by the parking lot. Chef Jordan Nakasone runs two seatings a night, and the menu moves between precise, traditional nigiri and kitchen courses with a looser, more playful hand. Service is the kind that's present without being felt. The room is quiet, the pacing deliberate, and the whole thing lands closer to ceremony than dinner.

  49. Rank 723. Rania

    Contemporary Indian

The name means "queen" in Sanskrit, which sets the tone before you've even sat down. Rania is a prix-fixe contemporary Indian spot in DC, Michelin-starred, where the kitchen treats the subcontinent's pantry as a starting point rather than a boundary. 50. Rank 723. Selby's

    Modern American

Old-school Hollywood glamour on El Camino Real sounds like a contradiction, but Selby's pulls it off. This is fine dining, the kind where the servers are sharply dressed and seem to have been born knowing which fork goes where. The kitchen leans into classic American comfort, given a subtle lift by produce from the team's own private farm. The chocolate cake has become a signature for a reason. Michelin has awarded it one star.

  51. A Michelin-starred omakase counter tucked into a Ventura Boulevard strip mall, which is either a surprise or a very Los Angeles thing, depending on your outlook. The chef trained for decades at serious sushi houses on both coasts, and his rice alone signals that something careful is happening here. The mood runs warmer than the minimalist room implies, and solo diners slot in comfortably at the counter without feeling like an afterthought.

  52. Rank 723. Shmoné

    Neo Levantine

The Jerusalem bagel arrives piping hot with olive oil and holds its own in a city that takes bagels personally. That confidence runs through everything at Eyal Shani's neo-Levantine restaurant in Greenwich Village, a one-Michelin-star spot where the compact room fills before the door swings open. Vegetables, seasonality, and sharing drive the menu, but the bone-in short rib tends to settle any debate about whether you needed meat.

  53. Rice milled in-house, fish dry-aged on-site, and a room small enough that everyone sits down at the same time, as if you've all been invited to the same dinner party. This Michelin-starred omakase sushi counter on Helena Ave moves through nigiri at a pace the chef sets, not you. The menu shifts daily or weekly, so repeat visits don't repeat themselves. Sparkling wine in the entryway while you wait is a civilized touch that earns its place.

  54. Tucked inside Paso's industrial Tin City, this tasting menu spot holds a Michelin star and a wood counter that wraps around an open kitchen like a front-row seat at the best show in town. The chef dry-ages fish and meat, lets the sauces do the talking, and somehow makes desserts the thing you'll remember longest. Small wine producers get most of the list.

    Contemporary Italian

A rooftop garden feeds the kitchen at this fine dining room on a quiet Pacific Heights block, so the herbs and edible flowers on your plate were growing upstairs not long ago. The chef, trained at Quince, makes pasta the way people talk about pasta, and holds a Michelin star for it. The menu moves through small bites and crudo before landing on those handmade shapes, each one a quiet argument that Northern California and Italy have a lot to discuss.

    Modern Korean

A tasting menu built on the idea that modern Korean cooking had a gap in San Francisco worth filling. Hyunyoung and Junsoo Bae brought serious fine dining backgrounds to Polk Street, and the result is a Michelin-starred room where the cooking leans on familiar Korean flavors but strips everything back to something quieter and more precise. The crowd dresses up, the pacing is unhurried, and the kitchen seems happiest when a single clean bite does all the talking.

A kaiseki counter in the East Village built around a single idea: moonlight. The name translates to "moon viewing," and the room takes that literally, with illuminated ceramic shelves and mirrored panels catching every gleam. The seasonal tasting menu moves with the kind of quiet confidence that doesn't need to announce itself, and the sake list, ordered à la carte, is the right move. Tsukimi holds a Michelin star.

  59. Uberto is a tasting-menu dining room on a resort's rolling green hills, about an hour from Atlanta, open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays only. It holds a Michelin star. Expect a special-occasion budget, a drive that doubles as a minor expedition, and a reservation you'll want to secure well ahead.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
