  1. Rank 801. Mariscos San Pedro

    Mexican Seafood

Mariscos San Pedro is a lively Pilsen seafood restaurant on the ground floor of Thalia Hall, doing Mexican mariscos with more imagination than the genre usually gets. The dining rooms are all colorful tile and cartoonish illustrations, and the bar handles anyone killing time before a show upstairs. It's a sit-down dinner, mid-priced, and the Eater-crowned shrimp gobernador taco is the one people mention.

  2. Rank 802. Lupi & Iris

    Mediterranean

The wood-fired octopus and French-Italian Riviera menu signal the ambitions clearly: this is fine dining, downtown Milwaukee, with tablecloths to match. Adam Siegel, who holds a James Beard Best Chef Midwest award for earlier work, shapes a kitchen that leans toward the sun-drenched coast without ever feeling like a theme. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant, it draws the kind of crowd that books ahead and doesn't check the prices twice.

  3. Rank 803. Miller & Lux

    Steakhouse

Tyler Florence's steakhouse sits waterfront in the shadow of Chase Center, which sounds like a pre-game stop but is decidedly not. The marble-and-leather room leans into quiet glamour, the kind of place you'd actually dress for. Dry-aged steaks are seared to a deep mahogany, oysters come from a saltwater estuary in the kitchen, and tableside Caesar service arrives without irony. The World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants lists it at number twenty-five.

  4. Rank 804. The Aperture

    Mediterranean

The art deco bones of this Walnut Hills live-fire Mediterranean restaurant are half the reason to book a table, the kitchen being the other half. The chef leans hard into the eastern Mediterranean, the kind of cooking where roasted vegetables become pita dips and hamachi collar gets a glossy glaze. Regulars have already claimed favorite bartenders, which for a restaurant this new is saying something. A 2024 New York Times Restaurant List pick and a 2025 James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist.

  5. Up a set of funkily painted stairs off a Union Market alley, this French-Levantine bistro from the chef behind Albi earns its own conversation. The hummus topped with smoky escargots and arak butter landed on the New York Times list of best dishes across the country, and the falafel with dill yogurt and trout roe is close behind. Za'atar cocktails, jewel-toned walls, and habibi funk on vinyl fill out the rest.

  6. Rank 806. Market Restaurant + Bar

    Contemporary American

The parking lot reads like a car show, which tells you something about who comes to dinner in Del Mar. This is a sleek, dimly lit restaurant where the menu ranges from sushi to blue cheese soufflé with no apparent anxiety about that range. The chef leans into the contradiction, pulling from Europe and Asia with enough confidence that the international sprawl feels like a point of view rather than indecision.

  7. A dim sum shop that rose from a literal fire, HK Lounge Bistro landed in SoMa after its beloved predecessor burned down in 2019, and the regulars followed. The carpeted, low-key room inside an office building asks you to ignore the setting and focus on the food, which isn't hard. Shanghai soup dumplings, baked pork buns with a crackly top, and shrimp wontons in peppery sesame sauce do most of the persuading. The Los Angeles Times named it one of the 101 Best Restaurants in California.

  8. The bar is packed before most tables are seated, which tells you something about how this place operates. Cucina Morini is a Sicilian-leaning Italian restaurant where the menu sprawls in the best way, pastas are made in house and offered in half portions so ordering more feels principled rather than excessive. The chef's James Beard semifinalist nod tracks; the food is careful without announcing itself.

  9. Rank 809. Bombera

    Mexican

A former fire station in Oakland's Dimond District, Bombera earns its name twice over: "firewoman" in Spanish, and the wood-fired oven at its heart burns corn husks whose ash goes straight into the masa. It's a contemporary Mexican restaurant where the tortillas are nixtamalized in-house and the moles are layered enough to make you stop mid-sentence. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on the L.A. Times' California 101 follow naturally from that kind of seriousness.

  11. A grand staircase leads you from the ground-floor bar up to a high-ceilinged dining room of globe lights, gold accents, and big windows that have clearly been briefed on the assignment. Inside Raffles Boston, La Padrona is an opulent, high-energy Italian restaurant where the pastas are made in-house and the plates are sized for sharing. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list, and the chef is a James Beard Northeast semifinalist.

  12. The former Heller's Bakery space now runs all day as a cafe, from morning lattes and egg sandwiches on potato rolls through a pastrami Reuben at lunch and on to dinner plates that get genuinely ambitious: fried halloumi with farro, chicken Milanese with romesco, ravioli with mushrooms and hazelnuts. The kitchen leans into fermentation and seasonal quirks in a way that keeps things interesting without making you feel like you're being lectured. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  13. Oysters and crab claws on ice set the tone at this bright seafood restaurant in Los Olivos, where the team behind Bell's in Los Alamos turned their attention to things that swim. Slide into a booth, order the shared plates, and let the wine list run deep, including their own label. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and Esquire put it on their Best New Restaurants list. 14. Rank 814. North Pond

    Seasonal American

A converted ice skaters' warming hut on the edge of a Lincoln Park pond, with the Chicago skyline framing the water outside the windows. North Pond runs a tasting menu that moves with the seasons, the chef pulling in Latin and Asian influences alongside herbs from a rooftop garden overhead. The room is warm brick and candlelight, the kind of place that earns its romantic reputation without visibly trying.

  15. Rank 815. Crawford and Son

    American Bistro

A long bar on one side, black marble banquettes on the other, and manchego herb biscuits coming out of the oven warm enough to ruin your appetite for everything else, except you won't let them. This is a neighborhood New American restaurant that happens to read upscale without much effort. The menu stays short and seasonal, which in Oakwood apparently includes a James Beard nomination for Outstanding Hospitality.

  16. Handmade pasta is the whole argument at this Mission Italian restaurant, where an open kitchen and a roaring pizza oven set the mood before you've ordered. The menu shifts constantly, leaning into the California-Italian overlap the neighborhood has come to expect from it. Half-portions exist, which is the kitchen quietly admitting the pasta list makes choosing one impossible. It's been an old-school institution long enough to anchor the block around it.

  17. Corn sourced from Oaxaca and nixtamalized in-house gives you a sense of how seriously this upscale-casual Mexican restaurant in Dupont Circle takes its sourcing. The menu covers raw bar, sopecitos, and mains like halibut with mole, plus sides that quietly steal scenes. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it started as a pop-up, which might explain why the cooking still has a point to prove. The papaya dessert alone earns its real estate on the menu.

  19. The café con leche here is made with a lighter roast, which in Miami is practically a political statement. Tinta y Café is a Cuban sandwich and coffee shop in Coral Gables where the second-generation team bakes its own baguettes, folds French eggs into the breakfast sandwiches, and stuffs the Madurito with roasted pork, chorizo, and sweet plantains. The New York Times put it on their Miami restaurant list, which the regulars probably shrug at between sips.

  20. Rank 821. Bouchon

    Classic French

Blue velvet banquettes, wood-paneled columns, and vintage frescoes sit just off a casino floor that couldn't be further from Paris, which is exactly the joke Thomas Keller seems happy to lean into. Bouchon is a classic French brasserie where the staff wear bow ties and the cooking runs to escargots and crème brûlée done with care. The room transports; the slot machines do not.

  22. Rank 822. Tailor

    Indian

Vivek Surti grew up eating Southern food and Gujarati home cooking, and this tasting menu restaurant in Germantown is where those two things finally sit down together. The open kitchen and plush, jewel-toned room feel more like a dinner party than a restaurant, helped along by the kitchen sending courses to every table at once. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and a James Beard Semifinalist nod for hospitality tracks with the room's warmth.

  23. A sushi restaurant in Omaha that isn't playing it safe, Yoshitomo builds on traditional Japanese technique and then quietly goes its own direction, folding local instincts into the menu in ways that read as natural rather than gimmicky. The rodeo maki, stuffed with wagyu and finished with tonkatsu sauce, makes the argument on its own. A 2026 James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Midwest.

  24. Tucked into a strip of drab storefronts near a hair salon called Bouffant Daddy, Robin is a tasting-menu restaurant that somehow feels like a warm secret. The room is soft-lit and earthy, and the four-course format leans into Midwestern ingredients with enough wit to keep things lively. Land on the New York Times Restaurant List and earn a James Beard nomination in the same year, and the mille-feuille of amaro chocolate mousse starts to make a certain kind of sense.

  25. The handmade tortillas, corn or flour, come out warm and the salsas live in a cooler you're invited to raid freely. This beloved Austin taco shop started as a food truck and the sisters behind it still run the show, turning out breakfast tacos loaded with eggs and chorizo alongside a mole negro chicken option at lunch. The migas taco, stacked with thick crispy chips, is hard to leave without. Order a La Bomba juice and you'll feel embarrassingly virtuous about it.

  27. Rank 829. Zuni Café

    Californian

The copper bar catches the afternoon light in a way that makes you want to order a Bloody Mary before you've even sat down. Zuni is a bi-level California bistro that's been a fixture on Market Street forever, shaped like a triangle and decorated like someone with actual taste. The wood-fired chicken for two, served with a warm bread salad, is the dish regulars have been quietly hoarding for decades.

  28. The old bus depot downtown is now a Spanish tapas bar warm enough to make you forget you had anywhere else to be. 29. Rank 831. Mazza

    Traditional Lebanese

The Lebanese restaurant in the 15th and 15th neighborhood keeps one of the largest Mediterranean wine and beer lists in the country, with bottles pulled from Lebanon, Morocco, and Greece. It's the kind of casual spot where a meal properly starts with dips and works toward a braised lamb shank. The chef earned a James Beard nomination in 2024, which feels about right for a room that takes traditional Lebanese cooking this seriously.

  36. Rank 841. Koyote

    Japanese Noodle Shop

The chef spent time training in ramen shops in Japan before bringing the practice back to Salt Lake City, and the bowls at this counter-service ramen shop make that detour feel logical. No reservations, QR code ordering, and nobody minding either, because the chicken broth runs deep and the chashu pork is properly tender. Gyoza hold you over while you wait. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the room fills fast on cold nights.

  37. Rank 842. Chai Pani

    Street Food Indian

Potato-stuffed puris doused in yogurt and tamarind are the opening argument at this Indian street food spot tucked into Union Market. The room is loud and color-splashed in the way that makes you feel like you showed up underdressed no matter what you're wearing. Meherwan Irani, a James Beard Award winner for his Asheville original, brought the concept north, and the DC version has carved out its own following among the city's suddenly crowded field of Indian restaurants.

  38. Rank 843. Phở Bắc

    Vietnamese

  39. Rank 844. Renzo

    Creative Pizzeria

A gold-embellished bar takes up half the dining room at this wood-fired pizza shop in North Central Charleston, facing an open kitchen and a serious natural wine collection. The pizzas lean creative, the booths fill fast with groups who came for the full spread, and there's Korean fried chicken for anyone who showed up mostly for the wine. The chef earned a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2026.

  40. Rank 845. Caffè Panna

    Italian Dessert

Caffè Panna is a tiny Italian ice cream shop near Union Square where the menu is rewritten daily around whatever's in season, so lavender rhubarb might not see tomorrow. Sundaes come crowned with imported Italian whipped cream and rubble like chocolate-covered potato chips, a pairing that sounds like a dare. The line is long and moves briskly, and it has landed on Eater's and The Infatuation's lists of top ice cream shops.

  41. The fried chicken here has been drawing Atlantans to this tiny soul food cafe on MLK Drive since before most of their parents were born. It's takeout only, which doesn't slow anyone down. The menu runs classic Southern, with daily specials and sides like tangy-sweet beans alongside whatever protein you came for. Finish with a cobbler. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the New York Times put it on its Atlanta list.

  42. Maass is a fine dining room across from Fort Lauderdale beach, cooking Modern European over open fire, the kind of place where foie gras shows up in portions you could lose in a pocket. Dress like you meant it. The weekend brunch is where the plot thickens, because the Japanese soufflé pancake arrives jiggling and tall, then gets buried in cultured butter, maple, and crème fraîche glaze until finishing it becomes a project.

  43. Rank 848. Marché Moderne

    Modern French

A fire engine-red Berkel slicer sits in open view of the dining room, which tells you something about how seriously this fine dining French restaurant takes its charcuterie. Husband-and-wife team Florent and Amelia Marneau run a kitchen that moves between classical and modern French without making a fuss about it. The glassed-in kitchen and soft globe lighting keep things elegant without going stiff. The cocktail list tracks the seasons, and the wine pairings are unusually fairly priced.

  44. Rank 848. Sorelle

    Southern Italian

Three renovated townhouses in historic downtown Charleston have been stitched together into an all-day Southern Italian cafe where the bones of an old bank still show through in the brass and marble. The room dresses up well, and so should you. Wood-fired pizzas and pastries carry the daytime crowd, but the house-made pastas are the reason to linger into evening. It holds a Michelin Guide selection and four AAA Diamonds.

  45. Mesquite charcoal does the heavy lifting here, giving the carne asada a smokiness that flour tortillas, silky and lightly crisped, are well suited to carry. This is a no-frills Sonoran taco shop in Glendale with a salsa bar and a menu that runs from al pastor to tripa to cabeza, none of it timid. Phoenix New Times gave it Best Tacos and Best Carne Asada in back-to-back years, and USA Today named it a Restaurant of the Year.

  48. The deer heads on the walls outnumber the menu items, which is saying something at this Houston BBQ shop where the beef rib routinely sells out before noon. Pitmaster Grant Pinkerton earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on Texas Monthly's 50 Best list, and Bill Gates has reportedly made the pilgrimage. You queue past the slicing station, grab a tray, and try not to overthink it. The smoked bread pudding is not a joke.

  49. There's a piano near the door, and on weekends kids actually play it while their families work through lazy breakfasts nearby. Cocina Consuelo is a supper club in Harlem built from a pandemic-era Mexican pop-up, and the home-cooking warmth masks some real kitchen ambition: masa pancakes from heirloom corn, birria over bone marrow. The New York Times named it one of the city's best new restaurants in 2025, and also called out the masa pancake among the top dishes of 2024.

  50. Rank 855. Tratto

    Italian

Chris Bianco's trattoria keeps a rotating pasta menu built around local flours matched to specific shapes, which sounds precious until you taste it. The kitchen runs classic cacio e pepe alongside whatever Arizona's season hands them, and the drink program goes equally deep into esoteric Italian amari and house-made liqueurs. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list, and the room feels like it earned that quietly.

  51. Rank 856. Cho Dang Gol

    Homestyle Korean

Soft tofu is the anchor of the menu at this homestyle Korean restaurant in Koreatown, which makes a quiet case for everything that isn't barbecue. Bubbling casseroles, spicy stews, pajeon, bibimbap, and cod roe omelet fill out a menu that reads like someone's grandmother wrote it. The dining room is wood tables and close quarters, warm enough that you forget you're on 35th Street. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on the New York Times list of the city's 100 best.

  52. Rank 857. Cotogna

    Italian

A wood flame burns in the hearth, thin slats line the ceiling, and a gleaming copper bar anchors the room, which tells you everything about where Cotogna sits on the rustic-to-refined spectrum. This is an Italian restaurant where the suited FiDi crowd fills tables at lunch and families slide in beside couples at dinner. The single raviolo, one egg in browned butter, is the move. Deep Italian wine list, lovely outdoor parklet.

  53. Rank 858. Saint Bread

    Japanese-Influenced Bakery

A former boat repair shop on the canal, now doing the Lord's work with cardamom croissants and Japanese melonpan. Saint Bread is a bakery with a full menu organized, with some nerve, by how many slices of bread your order contains. The "No Bread" section includes okonomiyaki, which tells you the kitchen has opinions. A chef's counter tucked at the back of a bright, airy downtown room sets the tone at this fine dining steakhouse: serious proteins from a serious grill, with raw bar snacks and house-made pasta filling the space in between. The Sonoma duck has made Arizona's top dishes list, and the chef has drawn James Beard semifinalist attention twice. Share the big cuts, or let the tasting menu make the decisions for you.

The Butcher's Feast is the move, a family-style spread of kimchi stew and egg soufflé before the real business, premium wagyu and prime cuts cooked tableside by a service team that clearly rehearsed.

    Ukrainian Eastern European

East Colfax doesn't usually do "sexy Eastern European," but Molotov Kitschen makes a convincing case for the phrase. The chef, a James Beard semifinalist, roots the menu in Ukrainian cooking, rotating dumplings and borscht alongside dishes that treat radishes and buckwheat like they have something to prove. Horilka cocktails and Balkan wines round things out. Counter seats are the move if you can get them.

The fish at this Greek fine dining room on the Strip is displayed on ice for you to choose before it's grilled, which is either refreshing transparency or mild pressure depending on your temperament. Servers know their regions and textures cold, so let them steer you. The lunch prix-fixe draws local regulars who know a quiet deal when they see one. Evenings bring a dressed-up crowd there for the seafood and the room.

The wood-roasted chicken at this Clayton neighborhood restaurant arrives with rapini and an immaculate jus, nowhere to hide and nothing to prove. Snacks lean indulgent, and the bigger plates, duck confit, lobster curry, hanger steak au poivre, are serious enough that calling this a wine bar starts to feel like underselling it. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
