The Best Places to Eat and Drink in the United States

Eat + Drink, change section
  1. Rank 2000. The Chuckbox

    Burger Joint

Somewhere between a diner and a log cabin, this cash-only Tempe burger shop has been grilling patties over a live mesquite fire since forever. You order at the counter while the smoke does its thing, then dress your own burger at the condiment table. Sizes run from a modest fifth-pounder up to a full pound of beef, which should cover most life situations. An old-school Valley institution, and the zucchini fries are not optional.

  2. Rank 2002. Rum Club

    Craft Cocktail Bar

The horseshoe bar juts into a low-ceilinged room lit by fairy lights, which tells you most of what you need to know before the first drink arrives. This is a cocktail bar with serious craft credentials and a named spot on Difford's Guide, but it wears that lightly. Off-duty bartenders from around Portland fill the stools, which is either the best endorsement or a sign you'll have to work harder to get the bartender's attention.

  3. The oak-and-charcoal grill doing steady work on Ibérico pork and whole fish is a reasonable argument for why this Spanish restaurant inside a food hall draws a serious crowd. The chef, an alum of José Andrés's Minibar, runs the room with a light touch: tapas at the bar, big shared platters for the table, and a Basque cheesecake that regulars treat as non-negotiable. The patio helps on good days.

  4. Rank 2004. Mezquite

    Sonoran

Paper-thin flour tortillas arrive with a spread of grilled onion, toreado chili, and black garlic before any protein lands on the table, which tells you where this place is coming from. Mezquite is a Sonoran Mexican restaurant inside Pullman Market, sun-bleached decor and all, serving the hyper-regional cooking of the Sonoran desert rather than anything resembling Tex-Mex. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  7. Rank 2007. Antico Pizza Napoletana

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The menu lives on a sign above the counter, and you decide on your pizza before you've even found a seat at the communal tables. This cavernous Neapolitan pizza shop shares its dining room with the prep kitchen, so you watch the dough get shaped and slid into one of three wood-fired ovens while you wait. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on 50 Top Pizza USA, which tracks for a place that draws lines in a strip-mall parking lot.

  8. Rank 2007. Sho Pizza Bar

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The name comes from "shokunin," a Japanese word for total devotion to a craft, which tells you something about how seriously Sean Brock takes his pizza. This Neapolitan slice spot in Riverside Village has a domed wood-fired oven imported from Italy and a glass-walled prep area where you can clock exactly where the cheese and cured meats came from. The crust is cold-fermented slow and bakes up light enough that you'll order a second. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  9. Rank 2009. Apteka

    Vegan Eastern European

Potato pierogi with czarna salsa is the kind of detail that stops you mid-sentence. Apteka is a vegan sit-down restaurant in Bloomfield riffing on Central and Eastern European cooking, and the menu reads like someone's Polish grandmother went fully plant-based and never looked back. The homemade cordials and tinctures are their own thing, worth ordering slowly. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

  10. Rank 2010. Distant Relatives

    New-School Barbecue

Damien Brockway runs a BBQ truck parked at Meanwhile Brewing, and the cooking draws on African diaspora traditions in ways that make the usual brisket-and-sausage spread feel like a starting point rather than the whole story. Pecan-smoked chicken and nose-to-tail restraint sit alongside rotating sides that shift the genre somewhere new. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and Brockway is a James Beard semifinalist. Come early, bring patience, leave with extra napkins.

  11. Wood-fired pizza in a Little River spot that feels like a party someone forgot to announce, concrete floors, dim lighting, and a natural wine list long enough to make you forget you came for the pizza. The pies come out of a wood-burning oven behind the bar with char that means it, and the crust cold-ferments for two days before it ever meets a topping. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Reservations are a good idea.

  12. Rank 2016. Uchi

    Japanese

Tyson Cole's Austin-born Japanese fine dining concept has colonized Old Town Scottsdale, and the food makes it hard to resent the expansion. The menu runs well past sashimi and nigiri into tempura, grilled meats, and crudo, and you can order à la carte, build a tasting menu with your server, or hand over full control with an omakase. The room runs on polished service and the kind of care that makes a chain feel like a local obsession.

  13. A Vietnamese restaurant in a Las Vegas Chinatown strip mall that earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by doing exactly what it says on the tin. The steamed rice rolls arrive buried under fried onions, the turmeric crepes come with enough fresh herbs to reforest a small country, and the bún bò huế is the kind of broth that makes you sit up straight. Everything is made to order, which means it arrives hot, and portions run large enough that you'll want company.

  14. Detroit-style pizza with a self-described tagline of "pretty good pizza," which is either very honest or very good marketing. The ultra-thick, crispy-edged pies come from a pandemic pop-up that grew into a permanent spot, and the narrow space flows out to a sidewalk parklet. The drinks menu is almost entirely under ten dollars, with wine notes like "kissing a guy with a mustache." The New York Times named it among Seattle's 25 best restaurants right now.

  15. Hand-pulled noodles are the whole point here, thick and chewy and landing somewhere between a bowl of Chinese noodles and a Middle Eastern lamb stew, which is exactly what Uyghur cooking is. Jahunger holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod, and the menu is short, halal, and unapologetic about spice. A Cambridge noodle shop that quietly draws a crowd happy to wait.

  19. Rank 2023. Ishtia

A smudge stick salad opens the meal, which tells you most of what you need to know about Ishtia's ambitions. This intimate tasting menu in Kemah builds a multicourse experience around Indigenous American ingredients and tradition, run by a chef who also operates a molecular gastronomy restaurant nearby, because apparently one mode of cooking wasn't enough. Seating is limited to Thursday through Saturday, so reservations are not optional.

  20. Rank 2024. Valhalla

    Pan-Asian

A single chef's counter runs the length of a cool, dark room in Wicker Park, putting every diner front-row for the kitchen. Valhalla is a tasting menu spot where the food roams freely, pulling from Filipino, Mexican, Chinese, and Indian traditions in the same meal. The cocktail and wine pairings are taken as seriously as the food, which is saying something. The Banchets named the sommelier of the year for 2025.

The kitchen calls itself "inauthentic," leaning into Asian and Indian flavors with detours wherever it wants, and the results hold a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Weekend brunch draws crowds happy to order everything and share. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2024.

    Caribbean

Jerk chicken wings with pineapple curry sauce set the tone at this African-Caribbean fusion restaurant on Cerrillos Road, a casual, colorful room where the chef's roots on the Kenyan island of Lamu show up in every bowl and skewer. Goat stew in island curry, chicken curry over cumin-scented coconut rice, it all reads like a very specific passport. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod confirm the kitchen punches above its strip-mall setting.

  23. Rank 2026. Restaurant Beatrice

    Contemporary Cajun & Creole

The restaurant is named for chef Michelle Carpenter's grandmother, whose fried chicken recipe anchors the menu at this contemporary Cajun and Creole spot in Oak Cliff. Dark-meat, deeply seasoned, and handed down through generations, it's the kind of dish that makes everything else feel like a warm-up act. The charbroiled oysters with Parmesan and andouille crumbles suggest the kitchen has range. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant in 2023.

  24. Rank 2026. The Corner

    Cocktail Bar

Dark wood, bare concrete, and blinds angled just enough to keep the early evening gloom intact: The Corner is a cocktail bar that dresses like it has nothing to prove. The beer list is deep, the liquor selection is serious, and the cocktails hold their own without any fuss. A few tables spill onto the sidewalk for watching a street that, frankly, isn't doing much. That turns out to be exactly the point.

    Seafood

A seafood restaurant in Williamsburg run by a fisherman's son, which shows. The menu leans on familiar territory but keeps swerving: surf clam in aguachile, mussels that are genuinely plush, squid that's properly charred. Then dessert arrives and a Basque cheesecake shows up funked with taleggio. The New York Times gave it two stars and a spot on their Restaurant List, which for a room this unpretentious in Maujer St feels about right.

Every time someone lifts the lid on the rice cooker, garlic fills this narrow Filipino restaurant on Western and essentially announces the whole menu's priorities. Started as a food stall, it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod. Pork runs the show in several forms, steelhead trout swims in tamarind broth for balance, and the deep-fried plantain spring roll dusted in brown sugar is the kind of dessert that reframes what dessert can be.

The menu roams globally, with shareable plates that lean on good technique without announcing themselves. 32. The flour tortillas at this Montrose smokehouse are made with smoked brisket fat, which tells you what kind of place The Pit Room is. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it on the basics: prime brisket, beef ribs, and sides that actually have opinions, like charred beans with real heat. Breakfast tacos run until mid-morning. In a city where great barbecue often requires a calendar, the fact that the line moves and seating exists feels almost radical.

    Filipino

Pork belly adobo with pineapple is the kind of dish that explains what this Filipino restaurant inside the Kimpton Alton Hotel is trying to do, which is honor traditional flavors and then quietly push past them. The kitchen came up through a pop-up circuit, and the ambition carried over. The family-style "paubaya" option hands the whole meal to the chef, a move that tends to reward the trusting. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list in 2022.

This Upper East Side restaurant draws on the chef's upbringing in Kanyakumari, where southern India and Sri Lanka blur together, and the cooking tastes like it. Texas Barbecue

A counter-service BBQ spot in suburban Maryland where the American Wagyu brisket is buttery enough to stop conversation mid-sentence. The smoked turkey and peppery pork ribs fill out a tray you'll keep adding to despite your better judgment, and the sides, brisket-studded beans included, pull their weight. Lines form fast, so regulars often grab their bags and go. A James Beard semifinalist, and ranked tenth on Washingtonian's top 100.

  39. Okàn is a sunny, window-lined dining room in Bluffton where West African, Caribbean, and Lowcountry cooking share a menu without anyone fighting over it. Banquettes are cushy, local art covers the walls, and a big bar sits dead center like it's running the place. Portions run generous and meant for passing around a table. Sourdough crusts fired in a hot electric oven, topped with combinations like chorizo, romesco, and Castelvetrano olives, are the organizing principle at this maximalist pizzeria inside Mercantile on Morris. Pandan piña coladas and crackling pork belly set the tone at this contemporary Filipino restaurant in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood, where aquatic blue tiles and trailing vines give the room a loose, coastal ease. The menu swings between dinner and weekend brunch, and both hold up well. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it draws a crowd happy to wait at the bar, cocktail in hand, for a table that's worth the patience.

  57. Rank 2060. Insalata's

    Mediterranean

Lemon-yellow walls hung with paintings of overflowing produce set the mood at this Mediterranean-leaning Marin restaurant, where California ingredients meet Middle Eastern flavors in a white-tablecloth room that never feels stiff. The kitchen leans hard into mezze and grilled meats, and a takeout counter in the back stocks house-baked bread, salads, and condiments for people who planned ahead. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

A live-edge wood counter and closely spaced tables give this Fairfax izakaya the feel of a Tokyo side street, which is a reasonable trick to pull in Marin County. The small-plates menu moves through takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and a short but careful nigiri selection, with a sake list overseen by an actual sake sommelier. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Modern Mediterranean

Maritime murals and leather benches set the mood at this fine dining Mediterranean spot off the Strip, where the kitchen leans hard into Italy and Spain with a particular fondness for Catalonian tapas. Sharing plates, pasta, risotto, and a tasting menu in omnivore, vegan, or vegetarian form give the table options. The chef was a James Beard nominee for Best Chef Southwest.

  60. Rank 2064. Café Kestrel

    Unfussy European Bistro

A tiny Red Hook corner spot where the menu fits on one page and the fried halloumi, served warm over honey, made the New York Times list of top dishes. Café Kestrel runs pan-European with a French lean: terrines, duck confit, a seafood plate finished with gaufrettes. The room is casual enough for a Tuesday but pulled-together enough that you won't feel underdressed ordering dessert, which the staff will gently insist upon anyway.

  61. The reservation line forms before doors open, which tells you everything about the temperature of this contemporary Indian restaurant inside the Aria. The room is all velvet and low light, the service is composed, and the kitchen pulls from street-food traditions without being precious about it. Curries are built for sharing and arrive bold enough to hold the table's attention, even by Las Vegas standards.

  62. Rank 2066. Cesarina

    Italian

A glass-walled pasta room lets you watch fusilli and tortelli take shape before they land on your table, which at this Ocean Beach trattoria feels about right. The menu is mostly mix-and-match, pasta shapes paired with sauces, and a server will gently steer you away from a wrong turn. Tableside tiramisu, mismatched hand-painted pottery, Valpolicella on the list. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room earns the noise.

  63. Boat noodles are the draw at this Thai noodle shop tucked into a Hollywood strip mall, where the broth runs thick, dark, and serious, and you pick your protein, noodle type, and heat level before the bowl hits the table. The portions are small by design, which is the shop's way of nudging you toward ordering two. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and on the LA Times 101 list. The stir-fried holy basil with pork is not an afterthought.

  64. Corn is flown in from Mexico and nixtamalized in house, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Mexican restaurant's priorities. Named for the Zapotec god of maize, it's a fonda-style spot where tortillas and quesadillas come from scratch, a hickory hearth does real work in the salsas, and the bar runs a margarita built on elote mezcal. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and the room fills up accordingly.

  67. Soup dumplings are the whole point here, and the kitchen treats them accordingly, wrapping every one by hand with skins thin enough to test your chopstick nerve. This casual dumpling shop on a Hayes Valley corner earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the stacks of bamboo steamers that fill the room explain why. The fillings run wider than the usual pork-only lineup, and the broth inside is cleaner than most.

The wood-burning oven is the whole point here, and it runs hot enough that pies come out of it faster than the counter moves. Stellina is a casual neo-Neapolitan pizzeria in Union Market territory, with colorful tiles, red stools, and the kind of blistered, chewy crust that makes "simple counter service" feel like a charitable description. The name is a nod to a Prohibition-era collective that disguised speakeasy maps as temperance posters, which tells you exactly the kind of commitment to the bit you're walking into. Death & Co is a proper cocktail bar on a quiet East Village block, dark and close and serious about what's in your glass. 84. Rank 2087. Fishmonger

    Southern Seafood

Half fish market, half seafood counter, Fishmonger seats guests at a communal table or window stools and takes orders from the back. The menu stays compact: oysters, crudos, sandwiches, soups, and whatever the boat brought in that day. The blackened grouper sandwich on a buttered seeded bun with pickled peppers and Florida sauce has become the house staple for good reason. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a Bon Appétit best new restaurant pick.

  85. Resident Taqueria is a casual counter-service taco spot in a Northeast Dallas strip center, where the house-made flour tortillas carry fillings that wander from Mexican tradition into Texas barbecue, like pork belly burnt ends with salsa macha. Breakfast tacos run all day, portions lean generous, and the Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand. The vibe is easygoing neighborhood regular, which suits the parking lot.

  86. The biscuits come in jalapeño-cheddar if you want them to, which tells you most of what you need to know. This Southern breakfast and brunch shop in Grant Park earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand turning out the kind of food that started as a pop-up and never got pretentious about it. Baked goods run deep, cinnamon rolls included, but the biscuit sandwiches stacked with hot honey chicken and pickles are the reason the line forms before you've had coffee.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
