The Best Places in the United States

  1. A center hearth anchors this Altadena neighborhood restaurant, and the live-fire cooking radiates outward from there. The team lost nearly everything in the Eaton Fire and kept going anyway, which gives the room a particular kind of warmth that has nothing to do with the flames. Seasonal, irreverent, and Esquire-named among the best new restaurants in America, Betsy pulls off the trick of feeling like a community dinner table without being precious about it.

  2. Rank 5602. majordōmo

    Pan-Asian

A former warehouse on the industrial edge of Chinatown, majordōmo is David Chang's sprawling, loud restaurant where the open kitchen sets the pace for everything else. The menu drifts freely across Asian influences, from snacks through noodles to large-format sharing plates, and it reads less like a document than a dare. Walk-ins can try for counter seats, but reservations go fast and the room fills faster.

  3. Rank 5603. ALTO

    Peruvian

The live-fire hearth in the open kitchen sets the mood at ALTO, a fine dining spot in Studio City built around the flavors of Argentina and Uruguay. The menu runs toward generous, shareable plates, with breads and empanadas opening things up before proteins cooked over fire take center stage. South American wines get their own serious list. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the Los Angeles Times placed it among the city's 101 best restaurants.

  4. Shang Artisan Noodle is a casual noodle shop in a Flamingo Road strip mall, where the chefs pull and cut dough in an open kitchen that works better than most Strip entertainment. Counter seats put you inches from the action, and bowls cost less than a vodka soda on the Strip. Go in as a group and count heads on the way out, because someone will be stuck at the window, hypnotized by the spinning noodles.

  5. Rank 5605. Laser Wolf

    Middle Eastern

Charcoal skewers arrive at the table in steady rotation while a spread of salatim fills every gap in between. This Fishtown skewer shop opened before the Brooklyn outpost, so Philly claims the original. Industrial bones get softened by hanging lanterns and greenery, which makes the whole room feel festive rather than warehouse-cold. The lamb ribs in cola and sour cherry glaze have earned their reputation. The New York Times put it on their restaurant list the year it opened.

  6. The oysters come straight from Hog Island's Tomales Bay farm, and that short supply chain shows in every platter. This easygoing seafood counter in the Ferry Building draws lines of locals and tourists alike for sweet, cold bivalves with all the classic accompaniments, plus Manila clam chowder and a hearty seafood stew. The Bay views from the patio don't hurt. Go early or go patient.

  7. Monzú is a sit-down Italian restaurant in a Flamingo Road strip mall, where the red sauce tradition gets politely ignored. The menu leans Sicilian, with lamb croquettes wrapped in lemon leaves and a stack of crepes baked with meat sauce and béchamel. The rectangular pizzas rise from a starter said to be 300 years old, which makes it older than most of the city's zoning. Dinner-date prices, nothing you need a jacket for.

  8. Rank 5608. Gui

    Korean Steakhouse

The aged steaks arrive finished with nothing but Maldon salt, which tells you something about the confidence level here. Gui is a Korean steakhouse in Times Square that leans into Japanese wagyu and USDA Prime cuts alongside raw bar and Asian-inflected sides like wagyu fried rice. The sleek room draws theater crowds but doesn't need them; the menu earns a visit on its own terms.

Blue-corn tacos, sustainable sourcing, and a no-reservations policy that the neighborhood has accepted as part of the deal. This cheerful Mexican spot in NoPa fills a small room dressed in reclaimed wood and green accents with local couples and families, all working through a menu that runs from chilaquiles to empanadas to pulled-pork tortillas. The kind of place where comfort and conscience occupy the same table without making a fuss about it.

    Mexican

Ceramics shipped directly from Mexico line the walls of this lively Mexican restaurant from Carlos Gaytán, and the earth-toned room hums at a volume that suggests nobody has ever eaten alone here. The chef's counter is the seat to angle for, where the kitchen turns out dishes that sit comfortably between traditional and inventive. Tacos, aguachile, tinga de pollo, and a horchata tres leches that tends to follow you home.

  12. A magazine about the outdoors decided to build a hotel, and it turns out that's a reasonable idea. Field & Stream's first foray into hospitality lands in Bozeman, close enough to Bridger Bowl and Big Sky for ski season and well-positioned for summer fishing and hiking. Yellowstone is a longer drive south. The Michelin Guide has selected it. Expect the full outdoor-lodge treatment, delivered by people who have been writing about this lifestyle for a very long time.

  13. The 1929 Art Deco skyscraper that allegedly inspired the Empire State Building now houses this Kimpton boutique hotel in downtown Winston-Salem. The old R.J. Reynolds Tobacco headquarters kept its bones, and Kimpton dressed them in the brand's signature breezy, mid-century-leaning style. The result lands somewhere between a history lesson and a fever dream of how glamorous corporate America once imagined itself.

  14. The awards

  15. A Victorian mansion turned 48-room boutique hotel, with enough original bones that the newer luxury touches feel like they snuck in quietly rather than arrived by contractor. Rooms run contemporary and low-key, the small spa handles massages and treatments, and breakfast and dinner are both on site. The north-end location splits the difference between downtown Napa and Yountville, which suits guests who want options without committing to either.

    The awards

  16. A boutique hotel sitting right on Redondo Beach's harbor, Shade trades on a location that drew resort-builders here long before the boutique concept existed. Rooms lean coastal-modern without overdoing the nautical clichés, and the South Bay light does most of the decorating. It holds a spot in the Michelin Selected Hotels list, which tracks if you're after somewhere small and considered rather than a big anonymous beach block.

    The awards

  17. Bold colors and graphic wallpaper give this boutique hotel a personality that most luxury properties pay consultants to sand away. The Admiral sits in downtown Mobile, drawing on the city's French colonial roots as a loose aesthetic thread through the décor. Rooms run from comfortable to genuinely suite-level, and the building houses a café, cocktail bar, and a chophouse, so you rarely have to leave.

    The awards

  18. A boutique hotel in Montclair that feels more like a very well-appointed Greenwich Village townhouse than anything you'd expect twelve miles into New Jersey. Bobbi Brown, who traded her cosmetics empire for a second act in hospitality, serves as creative director, and the rooms carry that same instinct for color and texture. The kind of place that makes a weekend in the suburbs feel like an actual idea.

    The awards

  19. The restaurant sits on the 42nd and 43rd floors, which tells you something about this hotel's ambitions. The Opus Westchester is a sleek, modernist tower in White Plains that reads more Midtown Manhattan than Hudson Valley commuter town, which is presumably the point. Views stretch across Long Island Sound and back toward the New York skyline. The spa has an indoor pool and a lounge deck for when the views stop being enough.

    The awards

  20. Stump-shaped tables, owl-embroidered pillows, and toy soldiers in Mason jars: this hotel in the heart of Silicon Valley commits to its woodland whimsy without apology. A greenhouse lobby opens onto a lawn-fringed pool, and rooms come with record players if you need a break from disrupting industries. A beer garden, a café, and the signature Valley Goat restaurant round things out for families and road warriors who've had enough of bland business parks.

  21. Rank 5621. Sawa

    Lebanese

Lines form outside before the doors open, which tells you something about this Middle Eastern restaurant in Park Slope. The menu is a deep dive into mezze and grilled meats, with house-made pita arriving hot enough to make the hummus and labneh situation feel urgent. The name means "together" in Arabic, and the room earns it: the energy runs warm and loud, the way a good dinner should.

  22. Rank 5622. Best BBQ

    Cantonese

The name is a trap, and a good one. Tucked inside a market on Buford Highway, this Cantonese counter spot hangs roast ducks in the window and lines its walls with numbered food photos so ordering is almost embarrassingly easy. The portions run large, the duck is lacquered and serious, and the honey barbecue pork earns its own return visit. Chamblee's stretch of Buford Highway is Atlanta's great culinary equalizer, and this is one of its reliable anchors.

The menu revolves around a rotating oyster selection and moves into fish tacos, lobster rolls, and the kind of bright, light seafood that pairs well with a glass of rosé and nowhere particular to be.

    Barbecue

The smoke here is the point, not the backdrop. This fast-casual BBQ counter inside the Source Hotel takes an Austin-leaning approach to brisket and jalapeño cheddar sausage, where the smoke reads as seasoning rather than spectacle. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich has its loyalists too. Sides like slaw and mac and cheese are present and accounted for, though nobody's lining up for them. The Michelin Guide has it on their list, if that helps calibrate expectations.

    Contemporary American

A short rib empanada with aji amarillo sauce has been the anchor of this Palm Beach restaurant's menu long enough that regulars would riot if it disappeared. Chef Clay Conley runs a contemporary American kitchen where crudos, pastas, and small plates rotate with the seasons, though a handful of signatures stay put. Half-orders of pasta let you try more than one, which is the kind of quiet generosity that keeps locals coming back.

  30. A boutique hotel on the Rockaway Beach strip, designed by Morris Adjmi, the architect behind Brooklyn's Wythe, so it has that same knowing downtown confidence planted squarely in deep Queens. The 53 rooms look out over the Atlantic or Jamaica Bay, the palette runs to sand and ocean blue, and the beach-and-pool scene in summer makes the subway commute from midtown feel like a reasonable sacrifice.

  31. The second-floor dining room on Avenue A reads like a very chic treehouse, all intimacy and low light. This vegan restaurant in the East Village brings a real polish to plant-based cooking, with dishes assembled like small arguments for taking the cuisine seriously. The menu occasionally wanders into paella and mole territory, which is a choice. It's a Michelin Selected spot, and the kind of room where nobody misses the meat.

  32. Rank 5633. Topsoil Restaurant

    Contemporary American

The name refers to the 16-acre farm supplying much of what lands on your plate, which is either a charming detail or a lot of pressure for some soil. This is a three-course New American restaurant just north of Greenville, with hardwood floors, wood-beam ceilings, and the relaxed, unhurried feeling of somewhere that doesn't need to hustle. The menu turns with the seasons, and the pastry side earned a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2024.

  33. A tucked-away New American restaurant on a quiet Bernal Heights block, 3rd Cousin grew out of a run of pop-ups that built enough of a following to fund a real room. The chef's seasonal cooking goes wherever it wants, so handmade truffle ravioli shares the menu with uni crème brûlée. Neighbors who know the menu by heart fill most of the seats on any given night, which tells you something about how the neighborhood feels about it.

  34. The modest exterior on a quiet West Village street gives almost nothing away, which is apparently the point. Inside, 4 Charles Prime Rib is an intimate, old-school steakhouse with deep leather booths and staff who seem to know your name by the second drink. The prime rib comes three ways, the creamed spinach is non-negotiable, and the Valrhona chocolate pie in an Oreo crust lands like a closing argument.

    Italian

Crystal pendants, hand-painted tile floors, and an amber sculpture drifting overhead set the tone at this West Loop Italian from the Boka Restaurant Group. The menu moves through freshly made pasta, puffy-edged pizzas, and a confident roasted half chicken, with a long stone bar doing brisk sandwich work at lunch. 39. The neon hallway cuts through the dark room like a sign that you're not at a standard chophouse. Beloved BBQ is a Japanese steakhouse where central circular grills anchor each table and A5 Wagyu is the main event, cooked tableside. 41. Rank 5635. Boulder Dushanbe Tea House

    Tajik Middle Eastern

Hand-carved panels and painted ceilings line this teahouse, a physical gift from Boulder's sister city in Tajikistan, and the interior stops people mid-sentence. The menu wanders from samosas to a buttery rice plov to apple strudel, which is either chaotic or charming depending on your mood, but tea is the real organizing principle, with a selection comprehensive enough to occupy an afternoon without effort.

  42. Rank 5635. Bramble & Hare

    Rustic American

Fur throws drape the chairs, wood panels the walls, and the prosciutto aging in-house comes from pigs the chef actually raises. Bramble & Hare is a prix-fixe dinner spot where the menu starts at the farm, literally, because the team runs one. The cooking is unfussy by design, letting the ingredients carry the argument. It reads farmhouse lodge, feels like a dinner party, and draws the kind of crowd that never rushes dessert.

  43. Rank 5635. Cheeky's

    American

The bacon flight, five strips in rotating flavors, is reason enough to brave the wait at this daytime-only brunch spot in Palm Springs. Text-ahead seating lands you on a covered patio full of sunglasses and no particular hurry. The weekly-changing menu leans on local produce and runs from breakfast quesadillas to proper coffee cake, with housemade pastries at the counter for anyone too impatient to sit down.

  44. Rank 5635. Chez Fonfon

    Traditional Bistro

A grilled baguette with a jar of chicken liver mousse, aspic gleaming on top, sets the tone at this French bistro in Five Points South. The menu runs exactly as far as steak frites and trout amandine, and not one step further, which is entirely the point. Frank Stitt's room draws a polished Birmingham crowd that dresses for dinner and means it, and the kitchen meets them with the kind of seriousness that makes classic French food feel like a commitment.

  46. On weekends, an announcer calls reservation numbers over a booming speaker like high-stakes bingo, and the crowd outside barely fits through the door. Inside, this cavernous Brooklyn dim sum palace runs on steaming carts and trays shuttled through a gold-accented dining room. Eyes do most of the ordering. Weekdays are considerably calmer, which some people quietly prefer.

  47. Rank 5635. Elina's

Sinatra murmurs overhead, leather banquettes fill the room, and the bread basket arrives before you've even settled in. Elina's is a neighborhood Italian-American restaurant done with real affection for the canon: clams casino, rigatoni alla vodka, chicken parm under a blanket of marinara and mozz. 50. A chalkboard lists the day's fish at this tiny omakase counter, which keeps seats scarce and reservations non-negotiable. The 90-minute sushi experience moves through nigiri sourced from San Diego waters, Peruvian fishing boats, and Japanese suppliers, with a handroll menu waiting for anyone not quite ready to leave. The Michelin Guide has taken notice of this Convoy Street spot, which feels like an inside track even when the room is full.

  51. Rank 5635. Himitsu

    Sushi

Eight seats at a hinoki counter is the whole point at this discreet La Jolla sushiya, so a reservation is non-negotiable. The omakase format is the move, though à la carte runs from sashimi to maki with rice that regulars mention unprompted. The chefs talk through their fish and technique like they enjoy it, which they appear to, and the room, all greenery and natural wood, makes the whole thing feel quieter than the address deserves.

  52. Rank 5635. J.G. Melon

    American

The green-and-white checked tablecloths have been here so long they're practically load-bearing. JG Melon is an old-school Upper East Side burger joint where the dark wood bar stays busy, the staff is genuinely cheerful, and the cheeseburger is the reason The Infatuation named it one of New York's defining dishes. Come early or expect a wait, which at this point is just part of the ritual.

  53. Rank 5635. La Marcha

    Spanish

The smell of saffron hits you before you reach the door, which is a reasonable promise to make. La Marcha is a Spanish tapas and paella restaurant on San Pablo where the jamón legs hanging in the back corner set the decorative tone. Paellas come in enough variations to anchor a group, and the happy hour draws solo diners to the L-shaped bar for wine and free bites. Rustic, lively, and never quiet.

    Pizzeria

Sourdough pies out of a wood-fired oven anchor the menu at this laid-back neighborhood pizza spot, where tall ceilings and a light wood and green palette make it feel like someone actually thought about the room. Park City locals fill it nightly, and the open kitchen is worth watching. Sticky date pudding with salted caramel closes things out on a note that has nothing to do with pizza and no one seems to mind.

  55. Light wood floors, white walls, and the sort of spare aesthetic that lets the food do the talking set the mood at this downtown Boulder restaurant. The menu leans toward meat but treats vegetables with genuine seriousness, and the kitchen has a wry streak: the peanut butter tart arrives as a grown-up riff on ants on a log, which is either charming or unsettling depending on your childhood. 56. Oru is a sleek little sushi counter in the Heights from the Kira team, and the pitch is that nobody makes you sign up for a full omakase. You order a la carte, mixing nigiri, crudos, and a few composed plates as the mood strikes. The rice is served warm and deliberately textured, and dessert is banana ice cream topped with caviar, which is either a joke or a flex. A whiteboard lists the day's fish, and the counter fits a handful of people who know to leave the sauces out of it. This tiny sushi shop inside Vail Village runs a purist's game, nigiri and sashimi cut clean, with cuts like hagatsuo that rarely travel far outside Japan. The Michelin Guide has noted it, which in a ski town full of après-ski excess says something about where the serious eating is happening.

    Steakhouse

The cash-only policy has turned away more than a few first-timers who showed up unprepared, which is arguably part of the point. This old-school Brooklyn steakhouse runs on dry-aged Porterhouse, no-nonsense servers, and wood-paneled rooms full of people who've been coming for decades. The sides are simple, the schlag is non-negotiable, and the whole operation moves with the cheerful brusqueness of a place that has never once considered changing anything.

  59. Rank 5635. Ping Pang Pong

    Cantonese

Dim sum carts still roll through this cavernous Cantonese dining room inside the Gold Coast casino, just off the Strip, which is its own kind of statement. The open kitchen turns out roast duck and walnut prawns alongside the steamed, baked, and fried parade from the trolleys. The lotus-wrapped sticky rice bundles and XO fried rice rolls are the ones to flag down. A full Cantonese menu runs all day for anyone who wants something more substantial.

  60. Rank 5635. Prelude

    Southern Cocktail Bar

Fried chicken wings stuffed with andouille dirty rice tell you everything about this Southern-leaning cocktail bar and dining room in the Jay Hotel. The chef's Alabama roots show up in pimento cheese dressed with trout roe and banana cream pie reimagined as a chocolate-pretzel tartlet, dishes that straddle Sunday supper and something more deliberate. The room is dusky and quietly glamorous, the kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like a reason to dress up.

Radicato is an upstairs Italian restaurant just off Main Street, calling its cooking "mountain Italian," which in Breckenridge seems less a style than a survival strategy. The dining room is a bustling, handsome alcove, and the pasta is made by hand and leans hearty. The focaccia comes from a bakery a few doors down, so the bread traveled about as far as you did to get upstairs. Michelin lists it as a Selected Restaurant.

A wraparound marble bar anchors the two-level room at this polished River North steakhouse, where the décor runs black, white, and wood in a way that says "expense account" without quite shouting it. The semicircular booths fill with people who dressed for it.

This Crown Heights bagel shop turns out chewy, substantial rounds that hold up to the ambitious sandwich menu, where chipotle-bacon cream cheese and asparagus on a breakfast sandwich feel less weird than they should. The weekend line goes out the door, which at a bagel shop is either a warning or a recommendation, depending on how much you've had to eat.

  75. Rank 5676. Brezza

    Tuscan

Brezza is a Tuscan Italian restaurant at Resorts World where the steaks hang around in dry-aging for at least 100 days, long enough to pick up a funk that tastes a little like gorgonzola. The 16-ounce strip is the move, and the pappardelle with lamb ragu is easy to split. The dining room handles a business lunch fine, and the patio looks out at the Strip, which is a lot of neon to see over a plate of pasta.

  78. The mission here is explicit: no rainbow bagels, no blueberry bagels, no what Peter Shelsky calls the "shiksa bagel." This Park Slope bagel shop makes small, crust-forward rounds in the New York tradition, though the Sichuan peppercorn bagel, a nod to the long Jewish-Chinese-food alliance, bends the rules just enough. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
