  1. The fish arrives already sliced, since the chef handles his prep before guests sit down, which gives this West Loop omakase counter an almost ceremonial stillness. Korean flourishes like kimchi puree and sesame oil show up alongside fish flown in from Japan, and the pacing moves faster than you might expect. The chef rarely looks up, staying locked in, which somehow makes the whole thing feel more serious rather than less.

  2. Salmon sourced from Denmark, fish bought straight from Tokyo's Toyosu market: the supply chain at this Ballantyne sushi spot is taken seriously. The chef puts together nigiri and sashimi with Japanese-influenced small plates on the side, and a decent sake list to pull it together. No reservations, walk-ins only, which keeps things refreshingly unstructured for a room this focused on quality sourcing.

  3. Rank 268. Q Sushi

    Sushi

The tamago arrives last, soft and barely sweet, and somehow the whole meal makes sense. This is an omakase sushi counter downtown where chef Hiroyuki Naruke works through Edomae-style courses with an almost monastic calm, preparing and placing every piece himself. The room is quiet in a way that feels deliberate, and the pacing is unhurried enough that you notice each cut. A focused, intimate way to spend an evening.

  4. Rank 268. RYLA

    Contemporary Japanese

A splashy, date-night-ready restaurant in Hermosa Beach where a husband-and-wife team runs a contemporary Japanese kitchen with broad Asian influences. Small plates arrive meant for sharing, though the menu makes a convincing case for possessiveness. The room reads sophisticated without stiffness, and the cooking leans into contrasts, sweet corn and pickled green strawberries cut against rich ox tongue curry rice, while dessert ends things with a spicy ginger-sugared churro.

  5. A no-reservations sushi bar tucked into hilly Noe Valley, where the regulars skip the rolls and go straight for the nigiri. The menu is Japanese with a few Californian detours, and several omakase options keep things interesting, including an all-salmon version for the committed. Arrive early or plan to wait on the sidewalk, which, given the neighborhood, is honestly not the worst problem to have.

    The awards

  6. The soy-marinated tuna arrives dotted with freshly grated wasabi, a detail that quietly signals what kind of omakase this is. Sato runs a tight, polished counter in Japantown where the menu balances tradition and invention, lobster with dashi sitting alongside buttery hamachi belly lifted with yuzu. The luxury ingredients are present, but the restraint makes the stronger argument. Next door, sibling Sushi Sato offers a more casual, affordable take if the mood shifts.

  7. Rank 268. Secchu Yokota

    Tempura Japanese

A tempura omakase on the Lower East Side where the chef trained in French kitchens and uses mostly Japanese-sourced ingredients, which sounds like a concept pitch but unfolds as something quietly focused. The batter is sheer, the shrimp and anago are treated like they cost what they cost, and the meal opens and closes with dishes that have nothing to do with tempura. Small room, loyal regulars, not much signage.

  8. Ten seats at a counter in LES, where a shabu shabu omakase runs at whatever pace you set. The team swishes prime pork belly and A5 wagyu through boiling broth before finishing each piece in sweet soy, ponzu, or miso, and the volume of wagyu is such that you'd expect to feel pinned down by it, yet the lighter pairings keep everything moving. Spanish and Italian touches appear occasionally, and somehow they fit.

  9. Rank 268. Shunji

    Sushi

Two counters share the space, divided by a sliding wood partition, but regulars know which side to book. This is an omakase counter in Santa Monica where the chef's experience goes deep, the blonde wood counter runs minimalist and calm, and the nigiri speaks for itself. Prices match the ambition without apology. Reservations at the smaller counter fill fast, which tells you something without requiring anyone to say it.

  10. Twelve seats along the Upper East Side, with a chef who trained at Masa and Sushi Nakazawa before opening her own room. Sushi Akira runs an 18-course omakase at a price point that won't require a second mortgage, moving through chilled appetizers, nigiri, and dessert in a calm, unhurried sequence. The Michelin Guide has it listed. For a format that can tip toward ceremony, the atmosphere here stays quietly focused on the fish.

  11. Your name written in chalk on the counter, a cocktail already in hand, chefs ready to talk your ear off: this omakase mini-chain does not take itself too seriously, which turns out to suit the blowtorch. Nigiri here picks up brown sugar, chili ponzu, and fried onions alongside A5 wagyu and New Zealand salmon. Book the last seating and you can linger, requesting extra pieces until someone politely suggests otherwise.

  12. An L-shaped counter wraps around the chef at this modest sushiya in SoHo, where an omakase at a price that won't require a sit-down conversation with your accountant moves through a long parade of nigiri and small courses. The kitchen leans classic, with the occasional flourish, caviar on shima-aji, say, landing without fanfare. The mango sorbet at the end beats the green tea ice cream every time, but nobody told you that.

  13. Fish flies in from Japan twice a week, and regulars have quietly done the math: Friday is the move. This casual sushi shop in an Arcadia strip mall runs more like a busy Tokyo lunch counter than a hushed omakase temple, with a line at the door, servers moving fast, and chefs who don't waste motion. The nigiri rice is notably generous and soft. Counter or table, omakase or a la carte, the energy is the same.

  14. Soft fabrics and moody walls hang alongside framed letters and art that feels more gallery than sushi counter, which sets the tone nicely for what follows. This Sherman Oaks omakase spot runs half or full tasting menus, plus à la carte, with every piece of nigiri and sashimi cut to order. The wine list gets the same care as the fish, which is either charming or slightly unhinged depending on your orthodoxy about sake.

  15. A block from St. Pete's bar strip, this omakase counter keeps things focused: two menus, both built around nigiri, with the chef making confident calls on what goes with what. Koji-fermented ora king salmon brushed with whiskey barrel-aged soy is the kind of detail that tells you plenty about the ambition here. The room is small and the format is fixed, so you give up control at the door and mostly stop minding.

  16. Omakase in a Rowland Heights strip mall, and the price point will make you do a double-take. Sushi Yuen runs a tight, focused counter where most nigiri comes imported from Japan and the kitchen opens with seasonal courses that punch well above the room's modest surroundings. Lunch is walk-ins only and draws a devoted crowd. The Michelin Guide has had its eye on the place, which should settle any doubts the parking lot raises.

    The awards

  17. The handwritten menu changes nightly, which tells you almost everything about how seriously this strip-mall sushi counter takes itself. Tucked into an unremarkable Garden Grove plaza, Taira runs as both omakase and izakaya à la carte, so you can commit fully or just graze. The Michelin Guide picked it up, and the warm, personal hospitality from the team makes the modest room feel like considerably more than its address suggests.

  18. Rank 268. Tare

    Modern Sushi

There's no sign on the second floor of a North Austin office building, just an attendant at the door who knows you're coming. Inside, a dark granite counter sets the stage for a kappo-style omakase built around dry-aged nigiri, fish sourced from Japan with the occasional Texas curveball, think salsa macha or chicharron in the mix. It reads like a cultural argument conducted very politely, one piece at a time.

  19. Rank 268. Tempura Endo

    Tempura Japanese

Tempura Endo is a counter-focused omakase in Beverly Hills devoted entirely to the art of frying things in hot cottonseed oil, which sounds reductive until you're watching each piece emerge with a coating so lacy it barely registers as batter. Sit at the copper cauldron, not the tables. The tasting menu runs expensive, and the chef places each item in front of you one at a time, the way a ritual should go. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  20. A dark wood counter, a few floral arrangements, and very little else: the room at this Woodland Hills sushi shop keeps the focus where it belongs. The chef runs both omakase and an à la carte menu that pulls from solid Japanese sourcing, so regulars debate the chirashi bowl against the nigiri the same way people debate anything they plan to order again. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and the price point keeps the seats full.

  21. A sliding door off Sushi Azabu's dining room inside the Stanton Hotel opens onto a pale Hinoki cypress counter where an omakase menu moves between hot and cold courses with a few quiet surprises along the way. Most of the fish is handpicked at Japanese markets and flown in weekly, and the itamae are the kind who actually enjoy questions. For Ocean Drive, the whole setup is notably low on attitude.

  22. You receive an electronic letter with a coded cipher before you even find the door, which sets the mood for this East Village omakase counter built around the fictionalized office of a 19th-century world traveler. The fish runs from crowd-pleasing shima aji to less common black throat sea perch, and after the last bite, the downstairs library is there for a drink if you're willing to stay in character.

  24. The stone fireplace out front sets the tone before you even walk in. This downtown Asheville neighborhood restaurant runs on smoke, moving through smoked meats, grilled skewers, sashimi, and dumplings in a rustic room built around an open kitchen and a big central bar. The cocktails lean into the theme, one arrives visibly clouded. A tasting menu handles the decisions if you'd rather the kitchen just take over.

  25. Rank 268. Ukiyo

    Japanese

You find it through an unmarked alley door, down into a basement, which is exactly the kind of entrance that makes people feel very pleased with themselves. Ukiyo is an omakase-style tasting restaurant with two seatings a night, the menu rooted in Japanese technique but pulling freely from Southeast Asian and Peruvian traditions. Nigiri runs from otoro with scallion to minced chicken with lemongrass, and dessert has featured uni ice cream over roasted apples.

No sign on the building, a steep staircase to climb, and eight seats at the counter once you get there. This omakase spot in Alameda runs a set menu that moves through composed dishes and precise nigiri, with the cooked courses pulling as much weight as the fish. The Michelin Guide has taken notice. Bring cash, bring patience for the stairs, and don't be surprised if the eggplant is the thing you're still thinking about later.

  27. Rank 268. Vert Frais

    Japanese Noodle Shop

White walls, communal tables, and a daytime-only pace that makes Long Island City feel like it has a neighborhood café worth leaving the subway for. Vert Frais is a Japanese noodle and rice bowl spot backed by the chef behind Kanoyama, which means the cooking is more assured than the casual room suggests. 28. Rank 268. Yoichi's

  29. Rank 268. Yuji

    Japanese

Nine seats at a counter in Japantown, and the meal starts on time whether you're there or not. Yuji is a kappo counter, the less-ceremonial cousin to kaiseki, where a twelve-course progression moves through cold bites, pristine sashimi, and fried tilefish before landing on a bowl of steamed rice with pickled vegetables and miso. Matcha custard closes it out. The whole thing feels quieter and more personal than the format suggests.

  30. The counter runs the show at this handroll shop on East 3rd Street, a stretch that's become one of the better reasons to venture east of downtown. The room is dark and pared-down, the kind of place that hums without trying. The menu skips the usual handroll playbook, leaning into combinations that read strange on paper and make sense in your hands. Regulars fill that counter fast, so arriving early is its own form of planning.

    The awards

  31. The rice comes out burgundy, not white, because Harumi uses Forbidden black rice, and that detail alone tells you this is a modern sushi spot with a point of view. It sits in downtown Phoenix, small and lively, with an omakase option that won't require a financial intervention. The fish is clean and familiar rather than obscure, which suits the pre-show crowd it draws. Phoenix New Times named it a top pick for eating before a downtown event.

  32. This is a strip-mall sushi counter on the Westside, no frills, where the sashimi is spotless and the nigiri keeps things simple. The menu is gentle on beginners, with a starter platter built around the California roll, while the chirashi bowl comes loaded like a small aquarium. Reservations go through a phone line that only picks up at certain hours, which is either a hassle or a personality, depending on your patience.

  35. Rank 335. Hachi

    Sushi

Tucked into the base of a Galleria office building, Hachi is a sushi restaurant that splits its personality between an 18-course omakase and a full à la carte menu, so you decide how much of a commitment the evening becomes. The chef walks each omakase course to the table with its story attached, which sounds precious until it isn't. The nigiri is the thread either way.

  36. Ichiza is a second-floor izakaya in Chinatown that opens at 5pm and keeps the kitchen going until 11 the next morning, which makes it dinner, last call, and breakfast under one roof. The menu comes with photos, a kindness to anyone past the point of reading, and the specials are scrawled on paper taped to the walls. Both Eater and The Infatuation have put it on their late-night lists, and the honey toast, a buttered cube with ice cream on top, is why.

  37. Rank 335. Ito

    Sushi

Ito is a twelve-seat omakase counter on the 67th floor of the Fontainebleau, tucked inside a private members club, which is about as far from a strip mall sushi bar as geography allows. The eighteen courses run $400 a head, and the chefs play classic hip-hop while they torch and tweezer things into place. Expect a room of people dressed for a night out and quietly guarding their uni bowl.

  38. Chef Manabu "Hori" Horiuchi, a four-time James Beard Award nominee, runs this upscale Japanese restaurant and sushi bar in River Oaks. The menu moves between tradition and Houston without apology: amberjack sashimi arrives with foie gras, and a miso lobster mac and cheese sits a few lines below the daily sashimi specials. The room fills with the kind of regulars who know to check the specials board first and order off it almost exclusively.

  39. Rank 335. Kokoro

    Sushi

Kokoro lives inside Bravery Chef Hall downtown, where the team from Uchi turned a food-hall counter into a sushi and yakitori spot that manages to feel genuinely relaxed without the studied casualness of a place trying to prove a point. Nigiri and maki share the menu with grilled yakitori and chicken fat rice. The crowd eating standing up at the counter is not doing it ironically; the food just moves fast.

  40. The counter at this Museum District omakase spot is made from hinoki cypress, a wood chosen because it's said to sharpen the flavor of fish, which tells you something about how seriously the team takes the details here. Chef Chris Kinjo's sushi restaurant draws a dressed-up crowd willing to surrender the menu entirely, and the kitchen rewards them with plates that read as carefully considered as the room around them.

  41. Rank 335. Oishii

    Sushi

Oishii means "delicious" in Japanese, which is either a promise or a spoiler, depending on how you feel about a sushi joint wedged between a dry cleaner and a liquor store in an Upper Kirby strip mall. The family-run room covers the classics: sashimi, tempura, udon, and rolls that don't require a second mortgage. Regulars tend to find it by word of mouth and then act like they invented it.

  42. Sen Of Japan is a sushi spot tucked into a strip mall just east of Summerlin, which is exactly where you'd expect to find a serious six-course omakase priced at a fraction of what the Strip would charge. Families and date-nighters fill the room early. The kitchen stays open until 1:30am most nights, so the late shift belongs to cooks and servers still in their work clothes, hunched over nigiri like it's the first meal of the day.

  43. Tokyo Boys is a sushi restaurant in Henderson wearing the stainless-steel shell of a 1950s diner, which makes the omakase-grade fish inside feel like a plot twist. The old diner counter now serves as the sushi bar, and it's the seat to take. The chef came up through Nobu, so a famous yellowtail jalapeño turns up here at a fraction of Strip pricing. Come in a T-shirt and don't expect a velvet rope.

  48. Rank 349. Hai Noon

    Japanese

Nobuo Fukuda, a James Beard Award winner, runs this intimate Japanese small-plates bar in Scottsdale, where the menu reads like a quiet argument against doing anything halfway. Most dishes land under twenty dollars, from panko-fried tofu with green papaya curry to sunomono with watermelon radish. The sashimi spoons have their own cult following, and an omakase is available by reservation for when you're feeling like committing to the evening.

  49. A Cortez Hill omakase counter where the whole evening is decided for you, which is the point, and the point costs $180. You get about two hours and twenty courses, with appetizers up front, nigiri in waves, a warm dish for a breather, and soup and dessert to close. 53. Rank 353. Honor Bar

    Osaka-style Sushi

Honor Bar is a Hillstone-run American restaurant on the Del Mar stretch of the coast highway, where the old Bully's North held court for decades. It took nine years to open, so the underground parking garage feels earned. Expect booths, a long bar, a patio, a burger, a pressed-sushi counter, and a gin-and-Sauvignon Blanc martini. The smart casual dress code is enforced, so leave the board shorts in the car.

  54. Little Kiki is a new katsu restaurant in a Carlsbad strip-mall suite, from the group behind Harumama and Blue Ocean Sushi Bar. The pork, chicken, salmon, and cod are all dry-aged on the premises, which is a lot of patience to invest in something you then bread and fry. Hot stone steaks get cooked at the table, so dinner doubles as supervised cooking. Right now it's dinner only, with lunch and takeout promised. Eater named it a Best New Restaurant for October 2026.

  55. Rank 353. Super Kyuramen

    Ramen Shop

The two-story honeycomb dining cubes and a lantern-lit alleyway of themed rooms give this Chinatown ramen and izakaya spot the feel of a Tokyo side street you stumbled onto by accident. Ramen bowls anchor the menu, but the kitchen also sends out dumplings, takoyaki, bao buns, and yakitori alongside sake, Japanese beer, and a full bar. It's a lot of fun for a Tuesday.

  57. Rank 358. Ramen Champ

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Jiro-style ramen is the calling card here, a Tokyo-born style less famous in the Bay Area than tonkotsu but arguably more interesting, with its shoyu-pork broth running fattier and more rustic, pork fat globules and all. The thick, chewy noodles come from a local craft purveyor, and a fistful of raw chopped garlic goes in to sharpen everything up. This San Jose ramen shop is doing real work diversifying a scene that tends to default to the same few styles.

  58. Rank 358. Ramen Hajime

    Japanese Noodle Shop

A ramen shop in a Santa Clara strip mall run by a chef who keeps a tight grip on his broths, making the noodles in-house and letting clean, well-built basics like a smoky shoyu do most of the talking. The real reason regulars check the calendar is the rotating specials, which have swung from crab ramen finished with pistachio oil to buckwheat noodles built around dried red snapper. The San Francisco Chronicle puts it among the Bay Area's best.

  60. Rank 358. Shugetsu

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Smoke hangs in the air from the moment you walk into this small ramen shop in Fremont, which is a pretty good preview of what's coming. The specialty is tsukemen, where thick chewy noodles and a deeply concentrated dipping broth arrive separately. When the broth runs low, ask the staff to top it with hot chicken stock. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's best ramen spots, and the smoke and pork anchovy depth make a reasonable case.

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Tsukemen is the format here: chilled house-made noodles served separately from a thick, concentrated broth so gelatinous it coats every strand on contact. The broth, built from chicken, pork, dried anchovies, and bonito, is intense enough that you can ask for dashi to thin it for sipping once the noodles are gone. This San Mateo shop is the first U.S. location of an old-school Tokyo institution credited with popularizing the style.

    Japanese Noodle Shop

A noodle bar tucked into a Lopez Island alleyway, where the chef makes his own ramen and udon and also, apparently, throws his own ceramics, which explains why the bowls are so good-looking. The broth is rich and deeply savory, the eggs are that soft jammy orange that makes everything look intentional. Reserve ahead: the handful of outdoor counter seats and high-tops fill up even when the ferry crossing feels like a bad idea.

  66. Rank 368. Cha-Ya

    Vegan Japanese

Vegan Japanese in the Mission, where the menu reads like an argument that tofu never needed meat to earn its place. Cha-Ya has been around forever, with roots in Berkeley's produce-obsessed dining scene, and the cooking stays rustic and unfussy: brothy soups, deep-fried tofu in mushroom-seaweed dashi, sushi rolls packed with pickled and steamed vegetables. Sidewalk tables if you want to watch Valencia Street do its thing.

  67. A low-key sushi bar in SoMa where the omakase swings from spicy tuna rolls to herb-crusted lamb chops, which tells you something about the kitchen's ambitions. The menu covers crowd-pleasing maki and rice bowls for the neighborhood regulars, but the longer tasting format is where things get interesting. The service is warm enough that people treat it like their local, and apparently that's exactly what it is.

    Kaiseki Japanese

Taking the elevator to the sixth floor of a commercial building off Union Square is a strange way to find a kaiseki omakase, which is probably the point. The chef spent years at the cult Japanese spot Kyo Ya before opening this one, and the room lands somewhere between chic Tokyo penthouse and relaxed dinner party, with the city glittering through the windows. The courses are elaborate and precise; the mood, somehow, is not.

    Contemporary Sushi

A sumo wrestler mural runs the length of the wall at this sleek, sprawling contemporary sushi spot in downtown Dublin. The 188-seat room feels casual despite its size, with granite counters and deep slouchy chairs built for a long night. Curry Japanese

The chef here trained in fine dining and then opened a Japanese curry shop in a Burlingame strip mall, which is either a pivot or a philosophy. The curry is built on three-hour caramelized onions and two dozen spices, and it eats like something that took considerably longer than it costs. Katsudon and a buttery corn soup round out the short menu. Casual, counter-service priced, and named among the Bay Area's best Japanese spots by the Chronicle.

    Omakase Japanese

A tiny counter next to Swan's Market in Old Oakland, Delage runs an omakase-only format that mixes high-quality nigiri with kaiseki-style courses built around whatever local produce is at its peak. The chef, Mikiko Ando, treats a summer tomato with the same care usually given to imported delicacies. Eight courses, two seatings a night, and reservations that require more foresight than most people expect from a casual-looking room.

  78. Rank 375. Gi-Jin

    Sushi

A giant dragon mural looms over a small room built around sashimi, handrolls, and an unusually serious gin list, sorted by style so you actually learn something. The kitchen pairs fatty toro with yuzu salt and tucks pomegranate jam into a hamachi roll without it feeling like a stunt. The bar seats more people than the tables do, which tells you something about the vibe. Better for two than for six.

  79. Nine seats at a counter in Saratoga, quiet enough that you'll learn exactly how someone accidentally ended up with too many cars. This is a kaiseki tasting menu, eleven courses, served to everyone simultaneously like a dinner party. The chef mists soup bowls to simulate dew and trims grapes so they stand upright instead of rolling. Between courses he silently practices piano on the countertop. Small details, unhurried pace, kimono-clad service guiding you through all of it.

  80. Rank 375. Itsumono

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

The menu calls itself "mukokuseki," a Japanese word for stateless, which is one way to describe a Scotch egg that riffs on Hawaiian loco moco with a side of mac salad. This International District izakaya keeps the menu rotating, but the throughline is confident genre collision: fried pork katsu sando tucked into garlic shokupan with spaghetti marinara and mozzarella. The New York Times named it among Seattle's best, and the shochu highball list gives you something to do while you figure out what just happened.

When you order a shochu sour, the proprietor walks over and squeezes the citrus at your table, which sets the tone immediately.

  82. The handwritten daily specials sheet is the first thing to read at this intimate Honolulu izakaya, where the fish changes with the season and the kitchen takes both seriously. Foie gras over braised daikon and egg yolk rice with uni and truffle butter signal the general direction: indulgent, a little theatrical, no apologies. The baby sardine chips do the work of a bar snack, but with more personality than a bar snack has any right to expect.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
