Rank 101. Fiola
Italian
Stone walls, Warhol-esque prints, and servers who greet you before you've touched the door handle: Fiola is a tasting-menu Italian on Pennsylvania Avenue where Fabio Trabocchi's kitchen treats pasta scraps as an occasion for caviar and sea urchin. Several tasting menus let you calibrate exactly how far down the rabbit hole to go. It holds a Michelin star and landed at number seven on 50 Top Italy's global list.

Cocktail Bar
The cocktail menu at this Mission bar changes twice a year, each edition built around a new theme, the kind of concept that sounds like a gimmick until you're on your second drink and deeply invested in 1960s counterculture. Trick Dog won the Spirited Award for Best U.S. Cocktail Bar in 2025, and the room fills with people who know exactly which round they're on. Loaded fries upstairs hold everything together.

Modern Soul Food
The elevator deposits you on the 63rd floor of a landmark skyscraper before you've had time to rehearse an expression for the view. Saga is a fine-dining tasting menu restaurant with two Michelin stars and velvet banquettes to match the ambition. Charlie Mitchell's cooking runs soul-food maximalism through Japanese minimalism, producing bites that read delicate and land heavy. The Moroccan tea service closing the meal is a quiet house tradition worth knowing about.

Cocktail Bar
A cocktail bar that calls itself a nerdy cocktail bar, a natural wine bar, and your favorite dive bar, and then has the audacity to be all three. The Old Bay Martini landed it on Esquire's radar and the Spirited Awards named it the top U.S. cocktail bar, but the room itself is the tell: hot dogs share menu space with wine you've never heard of, and nobody in here seems to think that's unusual.

Ice cream mid-savory-course is either a provocation or a mistake, and at Dave Beran's Seline it's very much the former. Beran holds a James Beard Award for Best Chef: California, and the room earns the attention it gets.

A two-Michelin-starred, AAA Five Diamond counter in Tribeca where the kitchen runs in near silence while the playlist does the opposite. Chef Ronny Emborg sends out a long procession of tasting courses that manage to feel delicate and rich at the same time, a trick harder than it looks. The counter itself is unusually generous for this format, so the immersive part doesn't mean elbowing a stranger all night.

Banquettes, mirrored bulbs, and a room that manages to feel romantic without trying too hard: this is a Michelin-starred modern American restaurant on the North Side that has been doing this long enough to make it look easy. Mexican Cocktail Bar
A cocktail bar in Los Feliz that treats the agave category as a field guide rather than a menu category. While most bars stop at tequila and mezcal, Mírate goes deep into hyper-regional Mexican distillates, fermented pulque, tejuino, and tepache, much of it personally scouted by the beverage director. It landed at number 28 on North America's 50 Best Bars. The classics framework keeps things approachable; the spirits list is where things get interesting.

Venetian plaster walls and tables so generously spaced you forget the rest of Chicago exists set the scene at Curtis Duffy's fine dining room on Fulton Market. Texas Barbecue
Brisket exists here, but only on Fridays, which tells you something about a barbecue joint's confidence. LeRoy and Lewis is a new-school BBQ shop in Garrison Park, run by two couples who built it from a food truck into a Michelin-starred spot with glazed brick walls and a peaked roof. The menu leans into beef cheeks, rotating sausages, and whatever specials the week demands, with banana pudding tiramisu for anyone who needed proof this isn't a traditionalist operation.

Avant-Garde Spanish
A curved counter wrapping a stainless-steel workspace is where dinner happens at José Andrés's avant-garde tasting room, a two Michelin star, AAA Five Diamond operation that takes the small-bites format seriously enough to earn the credentials. Nothing on the menu looks like what it turns out to be, which is either thrilling or unsettling depending on your relationship with surprise. Sicilian
The triangular house slice here has a quiet cult following, which is funny for a spot that built its name on thick, square Sicilian cuts. This is a counter-service pizza shop where the square pies come topped with things like cacio e pepe and street corn, and the olive oil and grated Parm on the regular slice draws inevitable Di Fara comparisons. Time Out put the cacio e pepe among the best pizzas in the world, if that helps you decide.

Ten seats at a sleek counter on a cobblestoned West Village street, and the whole meal is in the chef's hands. Daisuke Nakazawa's omakase moves through a parade of nigiri, each piece built from deeply seasoned rice, a touch of wasabi, and a careful brush of nikiri. The fish skews fatty and tender in ways that tend to make regulars go quiet. One Michelin star, and a price point slightly more forgiving than the city's other serious sushi rooms.

A gallery wall of staff family portraits lines the interior, and a lime green bar anchors the room where church pews run along the walls. Named for the chef's grandmother, this Temescal soul food restaurant riffs on tradition with genuine curiosity: collards seasoned with berbere, fried chicken brined with pickle juice, a wine list that quietly suggests champagne as the correct pairing. Mexican
The agave-roasted sweet potato with salsa macha and fennel-whipped requesón has its own Eater listing, which tells you something about the ambition here. Alma Fonda Fina is a creative Mexican restaurant with a Michelin star, where the chef draws on a Guadalajara upbringing and runs a menu that skips dessert entirely, the logic being you should just order another dish. The chef's counter is the seat to want.

The Beaux-Arts bones alone do a lot of the work here: Corinthian columns, marble staircases, chandeliers the size of small planets, and ceilings high enough to humble anyone who walks in overdressed. The Peninsula New York is a classic Fifth Avenue luxury hotel, the kind where the staff seems to know what you need before you do. It holds a Forbes Five Star and a Michelin Key, which tracks for a place this committed to doing the traditional thing without irony.

The CTA rumbles overhead while the chef rattles off ingredients like an auctioneer building to a close. This intimate Uptown tasting menu spins Mexican cuisine through a restless, personal lens, moving from "chips and salsa" rendered as salsa verde jelly and tortilla crumble to a lamb tartare tostada seasoned al pastor-style. Contemporary Bistro
A moss wall and a foie gras "negroni" topped with Campari gelée tell you pretty quickly that this is not a low-key bistro. Ryan Ratino's contemporary New American spot on 14th Street holds a Michelin star and earns it with cooking that is quietly surreal without being smug about it. The room is warm enough that you forget you're at a special-occasion restaurant until the check arrives.

Reservations are scarce at this compact Japanese-influenced restaurant, and the walk-in line forms early. Chef Trevor Moran's menu is built around sharing plates with a precision that feels almost theatrical, from beef tartare hand rolls to rotating kakigori shaved into powdery, sculptural blocks. A Michelin star and a James Beard semifinalist nod signal the ambition; the laidback, buzzy room suggests nobody here is taking themselves too seriously.

The rooms start around the 35th floor, so Central Park and the Hudson are laid out below you like a diorama, and that view does a lot of the talking for a luxury hotel that also works hard to earn it. Wood paneling, marble, framed kimonos, and gold throw pillows signal the Mandarin group's Far Eastern aesthetic, carried off without feeling like a theme park. It holds a Forbes Five Star, and the spa alone draws guests who aren't even sleeping here.

Saguaro fruit, tepary beans, and wild sumac foraged from Gila River Community land anchor the tasting menu at this fine-dining room on tribal grounds. Vaulted ceilings, aquamarine velvet booths, and waiters in dinner jackets set the stage at this Michelin-starred Italian restaurant inside the landmark Puck Building. The menu reads like a love letter to every New York neighborhood at once: deli pickles, Jamaican beef ragu, Cantonese lobster, all cooked with enough precision that none of it feels like a bit. Meals end with miniature Italian ices that lean deliberately sweet. Tables go fast and walk-ins compete for bar seats.

Sushi
A U-shaped counter of Southern cypress sets the tone at this West Midtown omakase spot: dark walls, low light, and enough intimacy that the room feels like a secret. The chef holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination, and the menu leans into surprise over ceremony, moving from cooked bites to nigiri in a way that keeps regulars from ever quite memorizing the sequence. Dessert is not, as regulars will tell you, an afterthought.

Contemporary French
A blown-glass chandelier hangs over the bar at this contemporary French fine dining room tucked into one of Midtown's newer towers, and the soaring ceilings and warm tones make the room feel less corporate than the address suggests. Daniel Boulud and his team steer the menu toward seafood and vegetables with global touches throughout. The whole thing holds a Michelin star, which fits the quietly serious crowd that fills it on a weeknight.

Seafood
A wood-burning hearth anchors the open kitchen at this Michelin-starred seafood restaurant on the Embarcadero, and the live fire finds its way into nearly everything on the plate. The room goes hunter's cabin by way of Nordic design, with Bay Bridge views softening whatever pretension the dark wood and brick might otherwise suggest. The raw bar runs to purple sea urchin and antelope tartare, because apparently the ocean alone wasn't enough of a challenge.

The Mark is a hotel on Madison Avenue where Jacques Grange's monochromatic striped marble and spearmint lacquered bathrooms do most of the talking before you've even unpacked. The Upper East Side address puts the Met two blocks away, though Jean-Georges Vongerichten's kitchen and a New York outpost of Caviar Kaspia make leaving feel like an unreasonable ask. The multicourse tasting menu here shifts concept entirely depending on what the chef is currently obsessed with, whether that's a music era, a stretch of personal history, or something harder to name. Counter is a small, intimate fine dining room with a Michelin star, and the themes change often enough that regulars come back just to see what's replaced the last version of it. Cocktail Bar
There's no sign on Eldridge Street, just a faux tailor's shop window with a glowing "A" and a buzzer you'll wait at long enough to second-guess yourself. This is the cocktail bar that opened in the old Milk & Honey space after Sasha Petraske moved on, and it runs on the same no-menu, tell-us-what-you-like philosophy. North America's 50 Best Bars lists it, and the wait outside on any given night suggests people have read that list.

The gilded dining room inside the Wynn was designed to stop conversation mid-sentence, and the food takes the same approach. Wing Lei is a fine dining room built around Cantonese, Sichuan, and Shanghainese cooking, and it holds a Forbes Five Star, a distinction no other Chinese restaurant in North America can claim. Thai
Exposed pipes, factory windows, and earthy ceramics inside Hotel Kabuki set a mood that Thai restaurants rarely bother with. Nari holds a Michelin star for chef Pim Techamuanvivit's California-ingredient-driven cooking, which runs through a sharply contemporary Thai lens. The family-style menu changes with the seasons, so the squid, the curries, and the banana leaf parcels shift, but the kitchen's intensity doesn't. If you can't get a table, the upstairs bar takes walk-ins.

Kwame Onwuachi named this pan-African Caribbean restaurant after his older sister, and it carries that kind of personal weight through every dish. Contemporary Italian
A neon-pink exclamation mark glows above the door of this Michelin-starred contemporary Italian restaurant, wedged between a laundromat and a medical center in Buena Vista. The room is small and forest-green, and the staff seem to be enjoying themselves as much as anyone eating there. The menu calls itself Italian, then wanders somewhere more interesting, with house-made pastas and combinations that raise an eyebrow before they make total sense.

This is a French American neighborhood restaurant on Nicollet, where the chef works a distinctly Upper Midwestern palate, finding fall vegetables worthy of a special occasion without making the room feel like one. It won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant and landed on the New York Times Restaurant List. The pommes dauphine are, regulars will tell you, really just very good Tater Tots.

Japanese
NAOE is a five-seat omakase counter on Brickell Key that predates the city's current sushi gold rush. The menu is set each day, substitutions are not entertained, and the allergy policy is a polite no, so this is a three-hour meal you surrender to rather than negotiate. Expect a quiet room, a chef working inches away, and a bill that makes sense only if someone else is paying. It holds a Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamonds.

Thai Taco Tuesdays draw lines around the block at this family-run Sherman Oaks restaurant, where a second-generation chef holds a James Beard Award and runs a monthly omakase that books out before most people know it's open. The rest of the week it's classic Thai with a wine list that gets written about on its own terms. Warm, buzzy, and very Los Angeles in the best sense, which is to say it's completely unpretentious about being excellent.
