The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. The white onyx bar alone signals that someone spent serious money on this room, and the pink-and-chartreuse upholstery inside the landmarked Seagram Building does the rest. It's a mod Japanese brasserie where the menu circles back to Japan at every turn: teppanyaki, yuzu-sauced seafood, charred vegetables. The bar pours over thirty Japanese whiskies, which is either a reason to come early or a reason to stay very late.

  2. A loft-style hotel on the east side of the bay, equidistant from all three Bay Area airports, which tells you exactly who stays here and why. The décor runs toward the tech-forward, the rooms are high-ceilinged, and the South Bay's major campuses are a short drive in any direction. Bring a rental car; this is not a neighborhood for wandering. A Michelin Selected Hotel.

  3. A mid-century-styled beach hotel right where the Jacksonville road runs out at Atlantic Beach, close enough to the Atlantic that you catch the sunrise over the water from your room. The spa, a tiki bar called Soothsayer, a full restaurant, a breakfast café, and an ice cream shop mean you could plausibly never leave the property, which is either a feature or a warning depending on your disposition.

  6. Four restored historic buildings, including a pre-Revolutionary War cottage and an old bank, make up this 42-room hotel in Kingston. The Hudson Valley revival has brought plenty of newcomers to town, but Hotel Kinsley threads its rooms through the actual bones of the place rather than building around them. Restaurant Kinsley handles dinner with New American ambitions. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected hotels.

  7. A rooftop lounge with craft beer and a Tesla charging station is a pretty clear statement of intent for a Hudson Valley hotel. Hotel Nyack leans hard into the urban-getaway-that-doesn't-pretend-to-be-a-farmhouse lane: loft-style rooms, a steakhouse downstairs, and enough city comfort to make you forget you crossed the Tappan Zee. For New Yorkers who want the river without the apple-picking energy.

  10. Heated floors in every bathroom is the kind of detail that makes a 15-room boutique hotel in Glen Ellen feel less like a weekend trip and more like borrowing a very well-appointed friend's house. Wraparound porches, oak shade, gas fireplaces in many rooms, and a low-key pool give it a residential quality that sits comfortably in the quieter, less-trafficked corner of Sonoma Valley. No restaurant, but the wineries are basically the backyard.

  11. A Michelin Selected hotel on West Palm Beach's waterfront, The Ben takes its name from an old estate whose original guest list ran to Vanderbilts and presidents. Rooms lean into early Florida's tropical mood through rich textures and quality linens without turning the whole thing into a theme park. A rooftop restaurant sits above the city for Mediterranean plates and cocktails, while the ground-floor spot reworks American classics with local produce.

  13. An old brickworks turned boutique hotel in Golden, where the Denver suburbs give way to the Rockies and people seem genuinely unsure which world they're in. The Eddy Taproom & Hotel has a rooftop patio, firepits, and a full bar attached, so you can debrief after a trail without going far. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels, which tracks for a place that reads more like a well-designed escape than a highway stopover.

    The awards

  14. A Mediterranean Revival building on Cocoanut Row, The Vineta is Palm Beach's introduction to the Oetker Collection, the European group behind Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc. The 41 rooms were designed by Tino Zervudachi, who kept the grand-hotel bones while letting in enough eclectic detail to avoid feeling like a museum. Three bars and lounges means you're never far from somewhere to be seen, which in Palm Beach is less optional than it sounds.

  15. Newport's seaside inns tend toward Victorian grandeur, so the Wayfinder's 1970s aesthetic reads almost as a provocation. It's a boutique hotel done for people who want to actually talk to each other, with social spaces threaded throughout, local art on the walls, and rooms that mix maritime ease with a bit of Scandinavian restraint. Coffee comes from Providence roaster Nitro, and Nomi Park handles all-day eating when you surface.

  17. A cozy vintage tavern on a quiet West Village side street, The Commerce Inn does the American canon with a light touch: potted shrimp, roasted and grilled things, and a ribeye that arrives buried under a drift of fried onion rings. The patty melt earned a spot on the New York Times's top dishes list, which tells you something. Linen tables, wooden floors, and servers who seem genuinely glad you showed up.

  18. Rank 5719. Coni'Seafood

    Nayarit-style Mexican

Shrimp arrive head-on, sautéed in a red sauce of roasted chilies and beer, and that one dish tells you everything about this Nayarit-style seafood spot in Inglewood. The enclosed back patio is where locals settle in for whole fried fish, heaping ceviches, and tacos that landed on the Los Angeles Times' best taco list. The Michelin Guide has noticed too. Order broadly and let the kitchen, a family operation through and through, do the talking.

  20. Amber walls, wine bottles stacked everywhere, and ceilings high enough that SoHo feels a little less cramped. Altro Paradiso is an Italian restaurant from Ignacio Mattos where the pasta rotates with the seasons and the salads get their own devoted following, which is not something you say about many places. It fills up fast, and the room has that rare quality of feeling both stylish and genuinely comfortable at the same time.

  21. The name means "fragrant chili," and aroma is the throughline at this creative Thai restaurant on Geary, from hand-pounded curry pastes to a coconut ice cream finished with a plume of smoke from a traditional Thai incense candle. The kitchen applies fine-dining technique to both familiar and lesser-known dishes without making a big deal of it. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and the room stays quiet enough that you can actually taste what you're eating.

  22. Rank 5722. Warlord

    Live-Fire American

Diners queue on the sidewalk before the doors open, which tells you something about how this no-reservations live-fire restaurant on Milwaukee Ave operates. Everything passes over, under, or through the flames, from the foie gras ganache on grilled hearth bread to the butter cake that comes out of the fire with a crackling crust. The chefs' counter, where you can watch the whole production up close, is the seat everyone actually wants.

  23. The line out front in Long Island City is your landmark. Casa Enrique is a buzzy Mexican restaurant where family recipes share the menu with tacos and guacamole, but the kitchen finds its footing with the bigger plates: braised lamb shank, branzino marinated al pastor, and a mole that appears in several forms and never disappoints. Frozen watermelon margaritas keep arriving whether you asked or not, which is not a complaint.

  24. A tuk tuk parked in the back of a Fort Lauderdale strip mall sets the tone at this no-reservations Isan Thai restaurant, where the menu runs well past the usual curry-and-pad-thai circuit. The kitchen leans into the northeastern Thai repertoire, and when they ask how spicy you want it, they mean it as a real question. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, and the crowd filing in on a weeknight suggests word has been around for a while.

  25. A nigiri counter tucked into a food hall in Miami's Design District, where the neighbors outside are Bulgari and Armani but the vibe inside is strictly no-ceremony. Chef Yasu Tanaka keeps the menu to nigiri sets made with fish flown in several times a week, and the whole thing moves fast enough that you can be back on the marble-floored sidewalk in under twenty minutes, which is not something most sushiyas would advertise as a selling point.

  26. Rank 5727. Miss Lily's

    Caribbean

Formica tables, reggae on the speakers, and glam servers navigating the brightly colored booths: Miss Lily's is a lively Jamaican restaurant on Avenue A that makes the case for Caribbean food without any downtown hedging. Curried goat, jerk chicken, and oxtail stew are the anchors, and a well-stocked bar means the rum is never far behind. The Michelin Guide has it selected, which tracks for a room this committed to a good time.

  27. Rank 5728. Nudibranch

    Contemporary Pan-Asian

The signature mushroom dish has been on the menu since the place opened, which tells you something about how the East Village regulars feel about it. Nudibranch is a contemporary restaurant where Asian and Spanish influences keep bumping into each other in ways that somehow work, portions run small, and everyone ends up eating off everyone else's plate anyway. The masala chai tres leches lands as a genuinely disorienting closer, in a good way.

  28. Rank 5728. One White Street

    Seasonal Italian

A converted townhouse in Tribeca that runs its own upstate farm, so the vegetables on your plate were probably pulled from the ground by someone who also designed the menu. One White Street is a contemporary restaurant with both à la carte and tasting menu options, housed in a wood-paneled room with marble and tilework that makes "intimate" feel earned rather than euphemistic. The kitchen leans into bold, produce-forward cooking with a Michelin Guide selection to its name.

  29. The horchata here comes with fresh-diced apple, which sounds like a gimmick until it tastes like cold apple pie through a straw. This casual taco shop on 32nd Street does familiar Mexican comfort food with small, quiet twists: carne asada topped with nopales, fried shrimp with mango slaw. The kind of neighborhood spot where you figure out your order fast and eat faster.

  30. The wood-burning oven does most of the talking at this upscale Greek taverna just off Logan Square Park, kissing nearly everything on the menu with smoke. Warm pita arrives with a lineup of dips, lamb chops come in serious portions, and the baklava froyo with pistachio sauce is the kind of thing you didn't see coming. The wine list runs entirely Greek, from Macedonia to Santorini, which takes a certain confidence.

  31. The rooftop garden above this contemporary tasting room supplies some of what lands on the plate below, which feels appropriate given that the whole operation is Auburn University's hospitality school in action. Students run the front of house in sharp suits while resident chefs guide the kitchen, and the result is more polished than you'd expect from a classroom. The wine list ranges widely and seriously.

A Southside restaurant built around the idea of the American Sunday dinner, minus the part where you do dishes. The brick exterior is industrial enough to make you wonder if you've found a warehouse, but inside it's vaulted ceilings, square wood pillars, and moody lighting. The starters are meant for sharing, the cooking is comforting with a few unexpected turns, and it's a Michelin Guide Selected Restaurant, so dress like you mean it, within reason.

  34. Rank 5732. 4 Saints

On the seventh floor of the Rowan Hotel, this fine dining room has the highest rooftop in downtown Palm Springs, with the San Jacinto Mountains spread out in every direction. The chef riffs on Southern cooking, grilled steaks and seasonal produce with a warm-weather looseness that fits the setting. Date-infused Old Fashioneds arrive while the light goes gold. Prices float as high as the altitude, but so does everything worth watching in Palm Springs.

Central Texas barbecue has turned up at a fork in the road in McCalla, about as far from Austin as the name allows. Weekends mean a line, and the beef ribs tend to vanish early, so the early birds win. Counter service, paper-lined trays, and the Michelin Guide lists it as a Selected Restaurant.

  57. A family Thai restaurant on the Westside where the chef took over from her parents and didn't soften a thing. The menu runs from papaya salad with a real kick to green curry made from fresh chili paste, and the kitchen will calibrate the heat if you ask nicely. The pastries are a quiet surprise, French technique folded into Thai flavors. The Thai tea flan alone justifies staying for dessert.

    Pan Mexican

Murals by street artist Senkoe climb the walls of this lively Pan-Mexican restaurant on a corner that the surrounding industrial stretch does nothing to prepare you for. Aqua-blue chairs, cement floors, and a DJ booth set the tone before the food arrives. The menu roams Mexico freely, and the kitchen has a flair for the dramatic. A whole grilled pineapple stuffed with octopus and Chihuahua cheese makes the point pretty quickly.

Bacon & Butter is a scratch breakfast and brunch spot where the portions run large, the ingredients are noticeably fresh, and the menu hits every classic from French toast to overstuffed breakfast burritos. Georgian Eastern European

Khachapuri, the boat-shaped bread stuffed with molten cheese and a raw egg yolk you stir together yourself, is reason enough to make the drive to this Georgian restaurant in Mount Kisco. The room is warm and unfussy, Edison bulbs over dark wood, and the menu reads like a gentle introduction to a cuisine most tables are encountering for the first time. Ground lamb kebabs wrapped in lavash show up at nearly every table.

    Italian-American

The gold-and-red-etched window on Houston reads like a dare, and plenty of people fail it, assuming red-sauce cliché and walking on. Inside, the space is narrow and weathered, and the family crew runs it with the kind of unhurried warmth that suggests nobody's leaving hungry or in a hurry. It's an old-school Italian-American restaurant, the sort where the cacio e pepe and cannoli are doing the heavy lifting without making a fuss about it.

The cocktails are genuinely theatrical, and the dumplings, shrimp toast, and braised pork meatball give you every reason to stay past the second round.

Finding Bar Sawa involves exterior stairs, a second-floor lobby, a glass door, and an elevator down to the B level, which is either a great story or a reason to arrive early. The kitchen can play it straight or get a little loose, and the cocktail pairing keeps pace.

José Andrés runs this steakhouse inside the Ritz-Carlton NoMad like a controlled burn, with an open charcoal and wood-fired kitchen that fills the room with smoke and a sense of occasion that most restaurants wouldn't dare attempt. The cuts run American and Japanese, aged both ways, cooked over fire that does real work rather than just looking good. It landed on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which tracks.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
