The Best Places to Eat and Drink in the United States

Eat + Drink, change section
  1. Corrugated metal walls, open air, and a menu that fits on one page: this rustic Mexican spot in Lincoln Heights runs on stewed meats and soulful broths. The carne en su jugo, a tomatillo and bacon beef soup with pinto beans, is what keeps the regulars coming back, though the birria en consommé gives it a run. Tortillas are made in-house. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the small staff acts like they already know you.

  2. A sunny corner spot in Logan Square where the kitchen skips the tweezers and the fancy glassware in favor of food that tastes like itself. Cellar Door Provisions is a casual, Mediterranean-leaning restaurant with the kind of unfussy cooking that makes you wonder why anyone bothers with the other kind. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Counter seats, date nights, and wandering-in-off-the-street all work equally well here.

  3. Rank 2580. Chavela's

    Creative Mexican

The guacamole comes loaded with smoked trout and morita chile salsa, which tells you everything about where Chavela's is headed. This Crown Heights Mexican restaurant earns its Michelin Bib Gourmand behind a wrought-iron door and into a room of vivid tiles and a wall of ceramic butterflies. The cooking leans creative without abandoning the mole that traditionalists came for, and the whole place runs warmer and louder than its Franklin Avenue address might suggest.

  4. Rank 2580. Chef's Special Cocktail Bar

    Nostalgic Chinese-American

The U-shaped bar and oceanic color scheme set the mood before you've ordered a drink. Chef's Special is a cocktail bar and Chinese-American kitchen in Logan Square doing crab rangoon and shrimp chips without a hint of irony, which is exactly the point. The dan dan noodles and the bone-in pork shank with black bean sauce pull serious weight. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the room is loud and happy enough that nobody's surprised.

  5. Rank 2580. Chifa

    Chinese fusion Peruvian

Chifa is the word for the Chinese-Peruvian culinary collision that took root in Lima generations ago, and this Eagle Rock restaurant leans into the mashup with zebra-print walls and zero apology. The menu pulls from family recipes and runs short on purpose, so each dish earns its place. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room where the food punches well above the price.

  6. One kitchen has a comal turning heirloom Oaxacan corn into tortillas; another steams dumplings. José Andrés planted this casual restaurant inside The Cosmopolitan on the premise that Chinese and Mexican cuisines belong together, and the menu doesn't argue the point so much as demonstrate it with antojitos, dim sum, noodles, and ceviche sharing the same table. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room that eats this well without the formality.

  7. Mustard-yellow walls and hand-blown glass fixtures give this Indian bistro on Irvington's Main Street the feel of a neighborhood living room that happens to serve serious food. The menu leans into bold spice and local, organic produce, and the housemade mango chutney has its own quiet reputation. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the room stays lively, the cooking is confident, and the tile-fronted bar fits one more than you'd expect.

  8. The house-made charcuterie case does most of the persuading at this beloved butcher and deli from Donald Link. Mortadella, head cheese, and a muffuletta stacked with house meats and olive salad run alongside a smoky Cubano and something called Le Pig Mac. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and the bread is baked in-house. Order more than you think you need; the muffuletta alone could feed two.

  9. Rank 2580. Colapasta

    Modern Italian

A pasta station sits front and center at this modern trattoria a few blocks from the Pacific, so you can watch the dough come together before it arrives at your table. The menu is short and focused, running through a soup of the day, a handful of antipasti, and handmade pastas that are the clear reason to be here. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room that feels neighborly but cooks with real seriousness.

  10. Rank 2580. Comal

    Mexican

The large flat comal griddles that give this Berkeley restaurant its name sit in plain view in the open kitchen, which sets the tone nicely. It's a lively Mexican spot with an industrial-chic room, a heated back patio for year-round dining, and a serious tequila and mezcal list that keeps the noise level honest. The Michelin Bib Gourmand crowd tends to arrive early and order the guacamole before they've opened the menu.

  11. Handmade tortillas anchor everything at this taco counter inside Santa Barbara Public Market, where the team traces the recipes back to a Guadalajaran family tradition and then quietly updates them with whatever local produce is worth showing off. The Michelin Bib Gourmand went to a spot that plates grilled octopus and avocado tacos alongside a quesadilla so loaded with confit tomatoes and broccolini it barely holds its shape. Accept all three salsas.

  12. Wine by the bottle at retail price with a corkage fee is the kind of policy that fills a room on a Tuesday afternoon, and this California-Italian restaurant in Bankers Hill stays packed regardless. The menu runs seasonal salads, fresh pasta, and brick oven pizzas with playful twists, pepperoni with Calabrian chili and a honey drizzle being the sort of thing that sounds odd and then disappears fast. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  13. Rank 2580. Dai Ho

    Taiwanese

Doors open at 11:30 and close a few hours later, which tells you everything: this small Taiwanese restaurant in Temple City operates on its own terms, and the lines that form before opening tell you the neighborhood is fine with that. The menu hangs above the cash register, so you read it standing up. Tea arrives in a Styrofoam cup without asking. Expect to be out in twenty minutes, holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand memory.

  14. Cash only, order at the window, wait for your name. Dalessandro's has been doing cheesesteaks this way in northwest Philly for what feels like forever, and the system is not up for debate. The roll is soft, the chopped steak is tender, and the Cheez Whiz is not a compromise but the point. Add fried onions, say yes to the crushed hot peppers, and find a sidewalk table. 16. Rank 2580. Del Rossi's

    American

In Northern Liberties, this casual American spot bakes its own sesame-seeded sourdough for the cheesesteaks, which feels like a small act of defiance in a city where the sandwich is a religion. Chopped steak, fried onions, and Cooper Sharp come on that crackly bread, and the kitchen also pulls thin Brooklyn-style grandma pies. The Michelin Guide hands out a Bib Gourmand here, which tracks given how much is happening at the simple tables in back.

  17. The draw at this Koreatown restaurant is a whole duck roasted in a clay pot, stuffed with chestnuts, sweet potato, rice, and herbs, and it requires a day's notice, which is either a dealbreaker or the first sign you're dealing with something serious. The bird arrives bronzed and carved tableside. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it's the kind of place that rewards anyone willing to plan ahead and bring a group to share the thing properly.

  18. Rank 2580. Dija Mara

    Indonesian

The roll-up garage door tells you it's casual; the cooking reminds you it isn't. Dija Mara is an Indonesian restaurant on Oceanside's main strip, with cheeky murals and dim lighting keeping the vibe loose while the kitchen runs serious. Nasi goreng and charred eggplant with smoked tomato sambal are the kinds of dishes that make the Michelin Bib Gourmand make sense. Creative low-ABV cocktails built on house-fermented shrubs round out a menu that earns a weekend return.

  19. Rank 2580. Dim Sum Go Go

    Cantonese

Dim sum made to order rather than wheeled around on carts sets this Chinatown shop apart from its neighbors. The photo menu keeps things moving, which helps on weekends when the room is full and tables are shared with strangers as a matter of course. Rice rolls, pan-fried pork dumplings, and soup dumplings all come out fresh. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the portions are generous enough that the slightly higher prices barely register.

Inside, the warehouse floors and generously spaced tables make it unusually calm for a menu that reads like a small novel, packed with seafood, consommés, and rice dishes. 29. Portion sizes here run generous enough that the name feels like a promise kept. Gordo's is a laid-back Bushwick cantina where the chef, a Mexico City native, turns familiar Mexican cooking into something that earns its Michelin Bib Gourmand. The room skews family-friendly, the menu covers tacos, chile relleno, and mole enchiladas, and nobody leaves hungry enough to be annoyed about anything.

Tamales, posole, enchiladas, and stuffed sopapillas fill the menu, and the combo plates let you hedge your bets. The half-frozen mocha cake is the ending nobody planned on. Lotus-shaped lamps and Colonial-era wooden arches set the mood just off Union Square, where this Vietnamese restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand with cooking that goes well past the expected banh mi. Shanxi Noodle Shop

The menu at this tiny Arcadia noodle shop is short by design, because the kitchen is doing exactly one thing: Shanxi-style hand-pulled noodles, springy and chewy in a way that dried pasta simply isn't. The pork belly and fermented soy number has regulars arguing over what to call it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, cash-and-carry energy, and a strip mall address that filters out anyone not paying attention.

The orm, a chicken-and-dill curry, is the kind of dish that makes you wonder why dill doesn't show up in curry more often. An extensive cocktail list keeps things lively.

  94. A po'boy shop that has been around forever, Parkway Bakery and Tavern earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand feeding the neighborhood from a sprawling, loud, indoor-outdoor room built for Saints games and serious eating. The menu is long but the point is clear: fried seafood, specialty, and meat po'boys on New Orleans French rolls. Regulars don't agonize over the list, they just order the Creole barbecue shrimp and get on with their afternoon.

  95. Rank 2580. Pausa

    Venetian

A charcuterie-aging room visible from the dining room sets the tone at this Venetian Italian restaurant in downtown San Mateo. The chef brings his native Veneto to the menu, running from salumi boards through wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas to house-made pastas, and the kitchen stays open late enough to feel almost radical for the suburbs. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, and the tech crowd has noticed.

  96. A daytime café in a town that already leans hard into whimsy, Peasants Feast somehow fits right in without disappearing into the scenery. The sandwich menu follows the seasons closely, and what ends up between the bread leans creative rather than safe. The soup runs alongside it well. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the sister deli across the street handles picnic provisions for whoever has a winery next on the itinerary.

  97. The southern edge of Bryant Park has quietly become Sichuan row, and Peppercorn Station is the bright, cheerful one with a menu built for ordering too much and splitting the bill. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it with a kitchen that keeps the heat calibrated, nudging the sinuses rather than punishing them. A casual Chinese restaurant where the numbing, golden broths and fermented black bean mapo tofu do the talking.

  98. Rank 2580. Phở 79

    Vietnamese Noodle Shop

The clipboard by the front door tells you everything: this pho shop in Garden Grove has been an old-school institution long enough that the wait is just part of the ritual. The spartan room has a bright yellow wall covered in accolades, including a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and nobody glances up from their bowl long enough to admire them. The oxtail broth is what regulars order without looking at the menu.

  99. Rank 2580. Pho Momma

    Vietnamese Noodle Shop

A strip-mall pho shop on Folsom that earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand without trying to look the part. The broths, chicken and beef, go into the pot long enough to taste like someone actually cared, and the pho arrives ready to build with tender meats or house-made pork wontons. The spring rolls filled with crispy pork sausage are worth ordering before you get to the main event. Bring cash and low expectations for the decor; the kitchen handles the rest.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
