The Best Places to Eat and Do in the United States

Eat + Do, change section
  1. Rank 2332. La Dong

    Vietnamese

Lotus-shaped lamps and Colonial-era wooden arches set the mood just off Union Square, where this Vietnamese restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand with cooking that goes well past the expected banh mi. Come with a group and order deep: the turmeric crepe with shrimp and fresh herbs is a sharp move, and the pho, poured tableside, arrives fragrant enough to rearrange your whole afternoon.

  2. Rank 2332. Laliko

    Georgian Eastern European

A West Village Georgian restaurant where the wine list runs entirely from the Caucasus and the servers teach you how to eat khinkali before you embarrass yourself. Those large, broth-filled dumplings are the move, though the khachapuri, in either its cheese-molten or mint-bright form, will slow you down first. A long communal table anchors a room hung with murals. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  3. Rank 2332. Lao Xi Noodle House

    Shanxi Noodle Shop

The menu at this tiny Arcadia noodle shop is short by design, because the kitchen is doing exactly one thing: Shanxi-style hand-pulled noodles, springy and chewy in a way that dried pasta simply isn't. The pork belly and fermented soy number has regulars arguing over what to call it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, cash-and-carry energy, and a strip mall address that filters out anyone not paying attention.

  4. Rank 2332. Laos in Town

    Traditional Lao

The menu flags certain dishes "phet" for spicy, and it means it. This Northeast DC Southeast Asian restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for a menu that covers serious ground, including a dedicated vegan section and ingredients you won't find at the usual strip-mall Thai spot. The orm, a chicken-and-dill curry, is the kind of dish that makes you wonder why dill doesn't show up in curry more often. An extensive cocktail list keeps things lively.

  5. Rank 2332. Lapaba

    Italian

A pasta bar in Koreatown where the menu reads like a thought experiment: what if Italy and Korea had sorted things out earlier? Husband-and-wife chefs run a tight, dimly lit room with bar seating wrapping the space, the kind of setup that makes a solo dinner feel intentional rather than sad. The Korean-Italian mash-ups go all the way through to dessert, so order broadly and let the table sort out the overlaps.

  6. Rank 2332. Lardon

    Salumeria Italian

A curing chamber visible from the dining room sets the tone at this all-day salumeria in Logan Square, where the pig cutout over the door is not subtle and not meant to be. The Michelin Bib Gourmand spot runs charcuterie boards and deli sandwiches by day, then pivots to steak frites and duck confit on weekend evenings. Honeycomb tile floors and old wood joists give the room an unhurried, old-world feel.

  8. Rank 2332. Le Chêne

    French

When a pithivier comes out of the kitchen at Le Chêne, the whole room looks, and it earns the attention. This snug West Village French restaurant holds two Michelin stars and cooks like it's proving a point about classical technique, foie gras terrines, vin jaune sauces, and all. Tables are packed close, the ceiling is low, and a curved bar up front takes walk-ins. The wine list is serious and runs deep.

  9. Strip-mall Sichuan in Whitestone, Queens, with a Michelin Bib Gourmand tucked behind a menu that also lists crab Rangoon for the uninitiated. The kitchen's real business is the numbing, chilli-forward cooking of Sichuan province: spicy mung bean jelly noodles, crispy eggplant with a glass-like crust, and smoked pork shaved thin enough to read through. The tears-in-eyes jelly salad delivers on the peanuts and chillies if not the weeping. Cash in your General Tso's loyalty points here.

  10. Rank 2332. Little Alley

    Shanghainese

A Shanghai restaurant in Murray Hill where the vegetable dishes alone could anchor a meal, which tells you something about the kitchen's priorities. The crispy eel arrives sweet and glossy and somehow disappears before you've decided you like it. Pork and crab soup dumplings lean restrained rather than explosive, and the mapo tofu is silken and properly fiery. Dark walls, warm light, a small bar up front. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record here.

  11. Rank 2332. Little Chango

    Caribbean

You order at the counter, and they hand back your number on a playing card. Little Chango is a casual Caribbean street food counter in a cheerful yellow building, turning out arepas stuffed with ropa vieja and rice-and-meat lunch boxes. The sides are where things get interesting: Puerto Rican-style mamposteao, a bright escabeche with avocado and pickled onion. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a spot this low-key and this good.

  12. Lookout Mountain fills the windows at this St. Elmo Tex-Mex spot, which makes it easy to lose track of how many rounds of queso you've ordered. Little Coyote runs on smoked meats, house-made corn tortillas, and a menu built for sharing, so the table tends to fill up fast. The oxtail tostada finished with a fried egg and cactus chow chow signals that familiar territory isn't the whole story. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  13. Rank 2332. Little Fish

    Seafood

A seafood-focused breakfast and lunch spot sharing space with a mini market in Echo Park, Little Fish earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for food that punches well above its casual footprint. The signature fried fish sandwich, beer-battered Pacific striped bass with American cheese and kewpie mayo on a potato bun, is the kind of thing you'll think about on the drive home. Broccoli rabe skeptics and fish avoiders are looked after too.

  14. Rank 2332. Little Fish Melrose Hill

    Californian Seafood

A seafood restaurant where the fried fish sandwich at lunch is reason enough to show up, with clean batter, juicy fish, and the kind of balance that makes most sandwich shops look sloppy. This Melrose Ave sit-down spot is the newer sibling of an Echo Park original, keeping the same focus on sustainably sourced fish and California produce. The room is bright, the wines lean natural, and the service knows what it's doing.

  15. A crunchy Burmese pancake stuffed with vegetables and sesame seeds is the right way to start at this tiny East Village restaurant, where a family team runs the room with the kind of warmth that makes a ten-table spot feel like the whole point of the neighborhood. The menu runs longer than you'd expect from a place this small, covering soups, salads, curries, and noodles. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and easy to see why portions are built for sharing.

    Mexican

High ceilings, concrete floors, and a full bar set the tone at this East Village taqueria, where the tortillas are made fresh all day and the fillings take the whole thing seriously. The Michelin Bib Gourmand nod tracks: this is a taqueria that makes you feel slightly embarrassed about every taqueria you've settled for before. Finish with the churros if you know what's good for you.

  18. Rank 2332. Longman & Eagle

    Contemporary American

The whiskey list at this Logan Square gastropub runs long enough to suggest the bar is the main event, and the dim wood-paneled room backs that theory up. Then the kitchen, tucked into a corner, starts sending out terrines and sweetbreads and omelets folded with brie that quietly reframe the whole situation. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of neighborhood place where people wander in at breakfast and somehow stay for dinner.

    Cantonese Noodle Shop

The parking lot fills fast and the wait on weekends is real, but this Cantonese noodle shop in Rosemead moves its crowd along with the confidence of a place that has never needed dim sum carts to draw a line. Everything arrives hot and carefully seasoned, from steamed buns packed with char siu to rice noodle rolls that most tables order twice. 20. Rank 2332. Lucky 8

    Cajun & Creole

A Cajun-Creole restaurant in Sarasota's Southside Village that has no particular business being this good at gumbo. The room runs kitschy and colorful, the team is warm, and the menu drifts happily from chicken-and-andouille gumbo to crispy suckling pig dressed in nuoc cham, a nod to Louisiana's Vietnamese community that lands exactly right. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and lunch or dinner both work.

  21. Rank 2332. Lufu Nola

    Indian

The name is shorthand for "let us feed you," which is a reasonable promise from an Indian restaurant that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. What started as pop-ups graduated into a proper brick-and-mortar in the Central Business District, where the tandoor turns out garlic-buttered naan and the dosa arrives golden, crisp, and served with sambar masala. The nonalcoholic Curry Nola-da, a pina colada riff with garam masala and curry leaves, signals that the kitchen has a sense of humor.

  22. Rank 2332. Lunasia Dim Sum House

    Elegant Dessert

No carts circle the dining room at this Alhambra dim sum house, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen takes the whole operation. Orders come by menu, servers move fast, and the lobster noodle roll arrives on a platter dressed with the shell itself, a small piece of theater that gets noticed across the room. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the crowd on a weekend morning is exactly what you'd expect.

  23. A sign-in sheet on the sidewalk is your first clue that this strip-mall dumpling shop in Monrovia runs on its own terms. The menu is short, roughly half of it devoted to the namesake specialty, and the kitchen makes everything fresh each morning rather than pulling from a freezer. The pan-fried options tend to disappear fastest. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which explains the lines without quite preparing you for them.

    Pizzeria

A pizza spot in the Arts District where the menu is short and the crust does most of the talking, thin and crisp through the middle with edges that puff up just right. The toppings lean refined without getting precious, and the single dessert, a soft serve that rotates through flavors like tiramisu, keeps things honest. Joshua Skenes is behind it, and the cocktails are stronger than you'd expect from a slice operation. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand.

  25. Tin ceilings, tiled walls, and tall mirrors give this osteria on South Broadway the bones of a classic Roman trattoria, which is exactly what it's going for. Handmade pasta is the main event, with a rotating cast of shapes and tomato-based sauces that keeps the regulars from ever opening the menu properly. 26. Rank 2332. Mala Pata

    Mexican

Corn imported from Oaxaca gets ground in-house here, which is how seriously Mala Pata takes its tortillas, tostadas, and chips. It's a lively Mexican restaurant in a strip mall, with a cocktail bar next door that's essentially part of the deal. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks when the tacos and botanas are this carefully sourced. Order the guacamole, pick a taco or two, and let the mezcal mule situation sort itself out.

  27. The dry pot at this East Village Sichuan spot lets you build your own bowl from scratch, choosing proteins, vegetables, and heat level from a list long enough to be mildly paralyzing. Low ceilings, exposed brick, and a communal table set the scene. The Michelin Bib Gourmand regulars often skip the decision fatigue and go straight for dan dan noodles or cold braised beef and tripe. Nothing here will make you cry; Sichuan-curious beginners are safe.

The pies lean Italian in a specific, considered way, and the menu wanders pleasantly into fried sardines and prosciutto broth before circling back to where it belongs. 33. David Chang's noodle shop has been around forever, and the steamed buns alone have kept it packed. The room runs on wood counters and an open kitchen, and service moves at a clip, which suits the vibe. The menu leans into Asian street food with enough creativity to keep regulars guessing. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of spot where you'll spend less than you expect and think about it for days after.

  34. Roosters wander the yard of this colorful bungalow in Old Town, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. Moondog is an all-day cafe and bakery with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which sounds like a contradiction until the food arrives. This is a casual, cash-friendly dumpling shop in El Cerrito where the fillings run from classic pork to scrambled egg with tomato, and portions land somewhere between generous and alarming. Italian

The blind-covered windows in a Highland Park strip mall don't exactly shout "neighborhood Italian restaurant," but that's partly the point. The cocktails are named after Thai temple festival games, a detail that earns its place. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  93. This is a South End Mexican and Latin American restaurant where the signature taco is built on a sourdough tortilla that loses the structural argument almost immediately, given the ribeye, melted cheese, guacamole, and fried potatoes it's holding. The menu runs big and made for sharing, so bring friends and divide the work. The tequila and mezcal cocktails are worth their own detour, and the Michelin Guide lists it as a Bib Gourmand.

  94. Sopapillas with honey at the end of the meal is the oldest dessert trick in New Mexico, and Tia Sophia's has been pulling it off for longer than most of their regulars can remember. This is a breakfast-and-lunch spot on San Francisco Street doing the kind of New Mexican cooking, red chile pork tamales, cheese enchiladas, posole, that keeps a room full of locals who already know what they're getting. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and priced like it.

  95. Tipsy Thaiger is a Thai restaurant in a historic building on Roswell Square, run by three friends who wanted to cook the way people actually eat in Thailand. The menu splits between small plates built to go with cocktails and big communal dishes meant for the middle of the table. Old Bay turns up in the rice and Thai tea caramel on dessert, and the name is not subtle about the drinks. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

    Japanese Noodle Shop

You share a front door with a bar downstairs, then climb up to this ramen house on H Street, where sticker-plastered walls and Christmas lights set the mood. Counter seats turn fast and you get roughly an hour to work through one of five freshly made bowls. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Reservations only now, so the old sidewalk queue is someone else's problem.

  97. Rank 2332. Tonchin

    Authentic Ramen Shop

The tonkotsu broth here is pork-forward but never heavy, which sounds like a small thing until you've slogged through a bowl that coats your throat like spackling compound. This Tokyo-based ramen shop in Midtown pulls its noodles in-house, and they hold their spring all the way to the bottom of the bowl. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. The room is sleek enough for a working lunch and relaxed enough for a slow dinner.

  98. A Korean barbecue spot in Flushing's Murray Hill where the tabletop grills run hot and the room stays packed. The décor skips every trend in favor of the food, which is the right call. Banchan arrives before you've settled in, including house kimchi that's been aged long enough to mean it. The beef short ribs marinated in soy-based sauce are the move, wrapped in romaine at the table. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
