A private cottage across the street from its louder sibling, Reserve runs on dress codes, flickering candles, and soft piano, which tells you exactly what kind of evening this is. The tasting menu leans into caviar, dry-aged duck, and wagyu, while an enormous wine cellar offers options at most price points. The service team controls the pace deliberately, so no one is rushing you anywhere. Note that it operates seasonally.

Vietnamese
The motto here is "eat local, think global," which turns out to be a fair warning. Chef BT Nguyen's flagship Vietnamese-leaning restaurant pulls from her French training and time abroad just as readily as her heritage, so vichyssoise shows up alongside dishes built on bright, aromatic flavors. The room is intimate and quietly romantic. The presentation can veer fussy, but the cooking underneath is carefully seasoned and has something to say.

Modern French
Tucked into a corner of the Pizitz Food Hall, Rêve is a modern French tasting menu restaurant dressed in blues and whites that feels more composed than its food hall address might suggest. The chef runs à la carte at the bar and a fuller tasting menu in the booths, with French classics alongside things like ribeye marinated in banana vadouvan miso. The range is wide enough to keep you guessing which direction dinner will go next.

French
A metal gate opens onto a patio strung with lights and greenery, which sets the tone for everything that follows. This is a proper French bistro in suburban Lafayette, with exposed brick, chandeliers, and a menu that runs from gougères and wild boar pâté to venison in puff pastry. The wine list leans French but makes room for California, and the staff move like they've done this a thousand times.

Parisian French
The open-air rotisserie spinning in the front window is the tell: this is an all-day cafe built around Parisian-style spit-roasting, which in Flatbush means roasted chicken marinated for three days alongside bowls, platters, and seasonal grains. The whitewashed walls, cement floors, and a garden patio give it that particular Brooklyn-industrial ease. A good stop before or after Prospect Park, which is right there.

Neapolitan Pizzeria
A two-story floral mural marks the entrance to this Neapolitan pizza spot on Melrose, where the room manages dive-bar ease and actual style at the same time. Black marble bar, varnished wood communal table, a covered patio, and a wood-fired oven you can watch from almost anywhere. The hand-stretched pies are the move, though the seasonal small plates keep the table busy between rounds.

Indian
Deep blue velvet seats across two floors mark this upscale Indian restaurant at the edge of West Randolph's dining strip. The cocktail list comes with its own flavor matrix, which is either endearing or a lot, depending on your mood. The kitchen runs classic Indian technique through a contemporary lens, turning out dishes that feel familiar and surprising at once, the kind of place where you dress up a little and nobody feels overdressed.

Oyster Bar
Wide plank wood floors and exposed ductwork set the tone at this New American restaurant on Ojai's main strip, where the vibe splits the difference between farmhouse warmth and downtown cool. The menu drifts from a raw bar to local produce to a natural wine list, with a provisions counter up front for good measure. Simple dishes tend to surprise, and the kitchen handles a brothy clam stew with the kind of quiet confidence that doesn't need announcing.

Italian
Rossoblu is an Italian restaurant in the Fashion District that plants its flag firmly in Emilia-Romagna, the region where the chef spent formative summers eating very well. The pastas are made in-house, the ragu is slow and serious, and the tiramisu arrives as a proper brick rather than a cloud of pretension. Downtown shoppers and office lunchers fill the room, but the food is patient enough not to care.

The tandoor oven visible through the display kitchen sets the tone: this is a full-scale Persian restaurant with a dining room grand enough that you wonder if you underdressed. High-backed banquettes, earthy colors, and an inviting bar soften the scale considerably. The menu runs classic, from lamb shank braised in tomato stew to baklava, with a rosewater-and-pistachio ice cream sandwich for anyone who wants to go slightly sideways at dessert.

Bakery
The name nods to the two stones used to grind grain, and the flour-sack-shaped concrete blocks lining the walls suggest nobody here is being subtle about the theme. This Brooklyn bakery-restaurant splits its menu between sandwiches and salads, with the bread doing most of the talking. A Per Se alum runs the bakery side, which shows. Save room for dessert, then buy something extra for the walk home.

Contemporary Japanese
A splashy, date-night-ready restaurant in Hermosa Beach where a husband-and-wife team runs a contemporary Japanese kitchen with broad Asian influences. Small plates arrive meant for sharing, though the menu makes a convincing case for possessiveness. The room reads sophisticated without stiffness, and the cooking leans into contrasts, sweet corn and pickled green strawberries cut against rich ox tongue curry rice, while dessert ends things with a spicy ginger-sugared churro.

A backlit wine wall and a rolling library ladder set the mood at this upscale Californian restaurant on Pleasanton's main drag. The kitchen leans hard into hyper-seasonal cooking, sourcing from regenerative ranches and local farms, so the menu shifts whenever the season does. The room is dramatic without being fussy, which is roughly the tone the food takes too. It holds a spot in the Michelin Guide.

A family-run barbecue spot in the Lincoln Mill district, with white walls and high ceilings that keep things unfussy while the menu goes in several directions at once, pulling in bao sliders and ginger slaw alongside the core smokehouse work. Exposed brick, painted-tile floors, and photos of a Tuscan hometown set the mood at this neighborhood Italian restaurant in Shaw. The chef ran the kitchen at DC's beloved Tosca for years before opening this more personal room. Pasta gets serious attention here, and truffles show up more than once on the menu. The soy-marinated tuna arrives dotted with freshly grated wasabi, a detail that quietly signals what kind of omakase this is. Sato runs a tight, polished counter in Japantown where the menu balances tradition and invention, lobster with dashi sitting alongside buttery hamachi belly lifted with yuzu. The luxury ingredients are present, but the restraint makes the stronger argument. Next door, sibling Sushi Sato offers a more casual, affordable take if the mood shifts.

A tempura omakase on the Lower East Side where the chef trained in French kitchens and uses mostly Japanese-sourced ingredients, which sounds like a concept pitch but unfolds as something quietly focused. The batter is sheer, the shrimp and anago are treated like they cost what they cost, and the meal opens and closes with dishes that have nothing to do with tempura. Sfoglina is a casual trattoria on Connecticut Avenue where the pasta is rolled out at a station you can watch from your table, under a portrait of Sophia Loren who seems to approve. The name honors the matriarchs who made fresh pasta by hand, and the menu wanders Italy region by region. This is an omakase counter in Santa Monica where the chef's experience goes deep, the blonde wood counter runs minimalist and calm, and the nigiri speaks for itself. Prices match the ambition without apology. Reservations at the smaller counter fill fast, which tells you something without requiring anyone to say it.

A floor-to-ceiling photo of Sophia Loren watches over the dining room at this Neapolitan pizza and pasta spot in North Park, where the concrete-and-exposed-pipe look is exactly as cool as the neighborhood demands. The kitchen leans traditional Southern Italian underneath all that industrial chic, turning out wood-fired pies and handmade pastas with real conviction. Dinner gets lively; lunch is for people who prefer to think.

The donut fryer gets as much action as the smoker at this counter-service barbecue spot in the Milk District, and that tells you everything about what kind of place it is. Smoked brisket, turkey, and house chorizo come out simply plated, no fuss. Then come the made-to-order donuts, glazed or maple-bourbon or something more absurd, depending on the day. Sichuan
A Sichuan restaurant tucked along a quiet block near Bryant Park, where Midtown office workers have been eating around the secret for years. The kitchen runs on chili oil and Sichuan peppercorns, the kind that leave your lips buzzing pleasantly long after the bill arrives. Scallion pancakes, pork dumplings, braised fish with bean curd, and the spicy hot and sour noodles all make a case for themselves. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

American
A husband-and-wife team runs this fine dining spot in downtown Asheville, where the New American menu splits neatly between serious plates and a looser "easy" section of wings, a fried chicken sandwich, and a burger with house-made queso. The seasonal small plates and pastas are the point, but the fact that you can also just snack at the bar keeps the room from taking itself too seriously. Staff bring the Southern charm without the theater.

A converted house on Canton Street with a porch and a dining room that feels like someone's well-appointed grandmother let things get a little festive. Table & Main is a Southern restaurant where the kitchen follows the seasons closely, so the menu shifts around what's good rather than what's familiar. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Roswell is a quick drive from Atlanta, and the room fills early with people who clearly made a plan to be here.

Modern Mexican
Hacienda arches and in-house tortillas set the tone at this modern Mexican restaurant in downtown Palm Springs, where business lunchers and sunburned tourists in cover-ups share the room without anyone noticing the difference. The menu runs from street tacos to lobster, and the quesabirria short rib tacos come with a side of consommé for dipping. The tequila list is long enough that the margarita flights feel almost restrained.

Mexican
Pink papel picados hang overhead at this counter-service Mexican spot tucked into a Berkeley shopping complex, where the line at the limeade counter is a permanent fixture no matter the hour. Regulars run through chilaquiles at breakfast and sopes by lunch without glancing at the menu. The enchiladas come doused in a smoky guajillo-tomatillo sauce, and the quesadillas with kabocha squash and pecan sauce read more quietly ambitious than a strip-mall taqueria has any obligation to be.

The handwritten menu changes nightly, which tells you almost everything about how seriously this strip-mall sushi counter takes itself. Tucked into an unremarkable Garden Grove plaza, Taira runs as both omakase and izakaya à la carte, so you can commit fully or just graze. The Michelin Guide picked it up, and the warm, personal hospitality from the team makes the modest room feel like considerably more than its address suggests.

The menu at this Montford Avenue neighborhood tavern is organized by height: small plates, medium plates, and "tall" plates for the serious mains. It reads like a bit, but the kitchen backs it up, turning out a Caesar with house-made croutons and a cheeseburger loaded with house-made dijonnaise and griddled onions that feels deeply considered without making a fuss about it. Casual enough for a Tuesday, put-together enough for almost anything else.

Modern Sushi
There's no sign on the second floor of a North Austin office building, just an attendant at the door who knows you're coming. Inside, a dark granite counter sets the stage for a kappo-style omakase built around dry-aged nigiri, fish sourced from Japan with the occasional Texas curveball, think salsa macha or chicharron in the mix. It reads like a cultural argument conducted very politely, one piece at a time.

The front porch wait at this old-school Southern roadhouse is part of the deal, and the scratched walls inside are covered in decades of scribble and class photos that nobody bothered to take down. The move is fried catfish, cornmeal-dusted and golden, with a pile of hushpuppies beside it. The menu exists, technically, but nobody's consulting it. Cash-and-checkered-tablecloth Southern dining, deep in catfish country.

Tempura Japanese
Tempura Endo is a counter-focused omakase in Beverly Hills devoted entirely to the art of frying things in hot cottonseed oil, which sounds reductive until you're watching each piece emerge with a coating so lacy it barely registers as batter. Sit at the copper cauldron, not the tables. The tasting menu runs expensive, and the chef places each item in front of you one at a time, the way a ritual should go. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

The fireplace and ochre walls do most of the talking at this casual California neighborhood restaurant tucked into Bodega Bay, where the whale-watching crowd and the locals who never open the menu tend to end up at the same table. A Craftsman bungalow with a front porch, herringbone floors, and a brick fireplace that makes a convincing case for staying all evening. This is a refined Southern restaurant where fried chicken, biscuits, gumbo, and fried green tomatoes anchor the menu, with the kitchen adding enough unexpected turns to keep things interesting. The line out the door before noon tells you everything about how Jacksonville feels about this barbecue joint. It's an industrial space that fills fast, all smoke and noise and long communal tables, with platters of brisket, ribs, and sausage that emerge from the pit with enough seasoning and patience to make the bottle of sauce beside you feel a little embarrassed. This is a Garden District tasting menu spot where the chef pulls from across Asian cuisines, packaging the whole thing at a price that doesn't require a deep breath. Cocktails lean into Thai tea and lychee; the wine list chases small producers and back vintages. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

A former fish market in Santa Barbara's Funk Zone arts district, The Lark has grown into the kind of seasonal New American restaurant where the room feels as considered as the food. Large, family-style plates travel the table, leaning on Central Coast ingredients and riffing on them in ways you wouldn't quite predict. The wine list reads like a love letter to local producers, and the staff manages to be attentive without ever seeming like they're trying.

American Seafood
The dining room hangs right over the Santa Monica Pier, close enough to the water that the views do most of the decorating. This is a proper sit-down seafood restaurant, Maine lobster at the center of the menu, crab cakes and the rest fanning out from there. Tables are close together and the pace moves, but the steamed lobster arrives in good enough shape to make the butter beside it feel optional.

Korean
Dark wood, a full bar, and a reservation that fills faster than you'd expect for a Korean American restaurant on Sawtelle. The menu reads approachable but lands with precision, moving from kimchi pancake and steamed dumplings through charcoal-grilled short ribs to a caramelized cinnamon hotteok served warm with vanilla ice cream. The wine list gets taken seriously, which is either a pleasant surprise or exactly what you came for.

Mediterranean
A buzzy Mediterranean dinner spot in an old brick building on Telluride's main drag, where the menu wanders from Italy to North Africa and keeps the pasta house-made. Expect shareable plates, a real cocktail list, and a rooftop patio for drinks before you sit down, with mountain views doing most of the decorating. It's a Michelin Guide Selected Restaurant, and priced like a ski town: nobody here is counting.

Contemporary American
High West's own distillery runs this tasting-menu dinner inside a small cottage on Park Ave., where a company ambassador pairs each course with a whiskey pour and everyone eats in lockstep. You start on the patio with sips and snacks, then move inside for the full meal. The kitchen leans toward game and local fish, and the whiskey is, naturally, the whole point of being here.

You receive an electronic letter with a coded cipher before you even find the door, which sets the mood for this East Village omakase counter built around the fictionalized office of a 19th-century world traveler. The fish runs from crowd-pleasing shima aji to less common black throat sea perch, and after the last bite, the downstairs library is there for a drink if you're willing to stay in character.

Seafood
A pie-only dessert menu handled by a dedicated pastry chef is either a bold statement or a confession, and at The Pearl it reads as both. This Channelside seafood spot fills out a mixed-use building with a big, shareable American menu, raw and fried oysters, seafood towers, and fish and chips for when you're feeling sensible. The room mixes contemporary with maritime nostalgia, and the outdoor patio gets well-used in Tampa's approximately eleven months of decent weather.

French
Salmon-hued chairs, tufted banquettes, and marble tables beside a leafy patio give this French-leaning restaurant inside the Dupont Circle Hotel the feel of a very expensive terrarium. The menu drifts happily from lobster bisque to lamb tagine without apologizing for the range, which means the table next to yours is probably ordering something completely different and looking smug about it.
