The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. The natural wine list here won a James Beard Award, and the Michelin star belongs to the kitchen, which tells you this Williamsburg bar is doing two things at once and doing neither halfway. The room is famously small and the wait is famously brutal, but Nick Curtola's seasonal menu follows its own logic, landing somewhere between a great wine bar snack and something you'll think about for weeks. James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem is a co-owner, which explains the playlist.

  2. Perched in Beverly Hills' Golden Triangle, this Forbes Five Star hotel looks out over Beverly Canon Gardens, where white parasols and a fountain do their best impression of a Roman piazza. Rooms run floor-to-ceiling windows and proper beds. The rooftop holds a pool and a Dante outpost for cocktails above the Hollywood Hills. Somewhere below, a dedicated caviar and oyster bar awaits guests who find the minibar insufficiently ambitious.

  3. Rank 103. Mister Jiu's

    Modern Chinese

Salvaged gold floral chandeliers hang over lazy Susans in a high-ceilinged Chinatown room where Brandon Jew, a James Beard Award winner with a Michelin star, reworks the Cantonese cooking of his youth with California produce and genuine affection. The scallion milk bread with honey butter and the Peking duck are the two things regulars pretend they're deciding between, then order both. Dress up slightly more than you think San Francisco requires.

  5. Rank 105. Holbox

    Mexican

Named for a Caribbean island off the Yucatán coast, this Michelin-starred coastal Mexican seafood counter sits inside Mercado La Paloma in South Central, sharing the space with six other vendors and no liquor license, so lemonade it is. The chef grew up spearing fish on that same peninsula, and the ceviches, aguachiles, and grilled lobster on heirloom corn tortillas taste like it. North America's 50 Best lists it at number 26.

  6. The kitchen grows much of what it serves, pulling from an orchard, edible flower fields, vegetable gardens, and an apiary right on the Justin Winery property. This is a single tasting menu, fine dining, the kind where rolling vineyards fill every window and the service feels like a coordinated act of kindness. It holds a Michelin star, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond, which is a lot of hardware for one set of winding roads to carry.

  7. Rank 107. Galit

    Middle Eastern

The hummus arrives first, topped with brisket, alongside salatim and pita still warm from the flame, which is a good sign of what's coming. Galit is a prix-fixe modern Middle Eastern spot on Lincoln Ave, holding a Michelin star, where chef Zach Engel builds a menu that feels personal rather than encyclopedic. The wine list leans into Armenia, Lebanon, and Palestine, so the pairings have something to say.

  8. A former prune packing plant in Geyserville, now a Michelin-starred, AAA Five Diamond tasting-menu destination designed by Olson Kundig in concrete and glass. Douglas Keane runs dinner as a kind of wandering cocktail party: canapés in the lounge, a stint in the open kitchen, substantial courses in the dining room, and finally a chocolate waterfall room with the Willy Wonka soundtrack, because apparently that's where fine dining goes now.

  9. A U-shaped counter on the fifth floor where the cooks work close enough that you can watch them sweat, and they know it. The Catbird Seat is a tasting menu restaurant that has cycled through several chefs over the years without losing its grip on Nashville's imagination. The current husband-and-wife team leans into smoking, grilling, and preservation in ways that feel restless rather than studied. It holds a Michelin star.

  10. A grandfather clock by Maarten Baas sits in the lobby, its face replaced by a video of a man hand-painting the time, continuously. That sets the tone for this 86-room Midtown boutique hotel from London's Firmdale Hotels, where padded fabric wallpaper and original art fill rooms that look nothing like the rest of the neighborhood. A Forbes Four Star and three Michelin Keys for a property that treats Kit Kemp's textile instincts as a design brief.

  11. The whole room gets served at once, and each dish gets announced to everyone, which sounds like a dinner party because that's exactly what it is. Her Place is a tasting menu supper club from chef Amanda Shulman, with a Michelin star and a rotating multicourse menu that shifts every two weeks, leaning French and Italian without being stiff about it. The vibe is warm and communal; the cooking, technically sharp.

  12. Fifty-one lofts on the top two floors of MGM Grand, each with floor-to-ceiling glass and an infinity tub pointed at the Strip. This Forbes Five Star boutique hotel within a hotel gives every guest a dedicated 24-hour butler, a private entrance, and a tidy distance from the casino floor below. Designer Tony Chi kept the rooms calm and contemporary, which is a deliberate counterpoint to everything happening outside the window.

  13. Rank 114. Kalaya

    Southern Thai

A skylit Fishtown warehouse with pistachio-green bar, rattan furniture, and colossal potted palms sets the scene for chef Nok Suntaranon's Southern Thai restaurant, a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner. The food makes a case that Thai cuisine belongs nowhere near a takeaway box: bird-shaped dumplings hide caramelized cod, and the tamarind-glazed pork chop has genuine chophouse swagger. Reservations are hard to get even after the place quintupled in size.

  14. Rank 115. Auro

    Californian Mexican

The kitchen is fully visible behind glass, so you can watch the team plate while you sit in a tasting room that looks out over the northern Napa hills. This is fine dining inside the Four Seasons Calistoga, with a Californian menu that threads a Mexican influence through Wine Country produce, garden herbs, wagyu, crudo, masa. It holds a Michelin star and AAA Five Diamonds, and the James Beard committee has noticed the chef.

  15. Ice cream mid-savory-course is either a provocation or a mistake, and at Dave Beran's Seline it's very much the former. This is a high-concept California tasting menu built around themes like the arc of the seasons, where a miniature garden of edible succulents arrives before lamb with burnt strawberry jus. Beran holds a James Beard Award for Best Chef: California, and the room earns the attention it gets.

  16. Brisket exists here, but only on Fridays, which tells you something about a barbecue joint's confidence. LeRoy and Lewis is a new-school BBQ shop in Garrison Park, run by two couples who built it from a food truck into a Michelin-starred spot with glazed brick walls and a peaked roof. The menu leans into beef cheeks, rotating sausages, and whatever specials the week demands, with banana pudding tiramisu for anyone who needed proof this isn't a traditionalist operation.

  17. Rank 118. Tatemó

    Mexican

The sign outside belongs to a doughnut shop, which tells you everything about the neighborhood and nothing about what's inside. Tatemó is a BYOB tasting menu built around heirloom corn from across Mexico, and it holds a Michelin star. The chef turns masa into something you'd describe to people for weeks: a black mole so dark it needs its own tortilla, made from nixtamalized plantain, to make the point land.

  18. Rank 119. Mita

    Latin American

Plant-based Peruvian tasting menus in Shaw sounds like a premise that requires a disclaimer, yet Mita holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant. The chef's team pulls from across Latin America, so the flavors run from Andean to coastal without apology. Two tasting menu lengths mean you can commit at whatever level feels reasonable on a Tuesday. The bar program is serious enough that Punch named the team among its best new bartenders.

  19. Checkerboard floors, mustard velvet banquettes, and stained glass windows set the scene at this cozy Rittenhouse townhouse, where the eight-course tasting menu weaves classic French technique through ingredients and ideas from the African diaspora. The coconut, the plantain, the frothy sauce mopped up with Caribbean coco bread: it reads like a résumé with a point of view. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant winner and Michelin-starred, with a bar upstairs that earned its own Beard nomination.

  20. Rank 122. Provenance

    Modern Seafood

A counter inside a historic row house is where the kitchen and the dining room become one thing, which is more or less the point. Provenance is a modern seafood tasting menu where Korean and French influences trade off through a parade of pristine fish, dry-aged proteins, and sauces that do the heavy lifting. The Michelin star and a James Beard semifinalist nod for pastry suggest the ambition runs the full length of the meal.

  21. The agave-roasted sweet potato with salsa macha and fennel-whipped requesón has its own Eater listing, which tells you something about the ambition here. Alma Fonda Fina is a creative Mexican restaurant with a Michelin star, where the chef draws on a Guadalajara upbringing and runs a menu that skips dessert entirely, the logic being you should just order another dish. The chef's counter is the seat to want.

  22. Rank 124. Cariño

    Latin American

The CTA rumbles overhead while the chef rattles off ingredients like an auctioneer building to a close. This intimate Uptown tasting menu spins Mexican cuisine through a restless, personal lens, moving from "chips and salsa" rendered as salsa verde jelly and tortilla crumble to a lamb tartare tostada seasoned al pastor-style. Counter seats put you close enough to watch the small team work. It holds a Michelin star and landed on the New York Times Restaurant List for 2025.

  23. Karyn Tomlinson won a James Beard Award for the cooking she does here, which should tell you something. Myriel is a small-plates tasting spot in St. Paul where the menu changes often enough that nothing is posted online, which forces a pleasant kind of surrender. The room runs cream and sand with European bones, cozy but pulled-together. Tomlinson is also known for her pastry work, so if apple pie is on that night, the answer is yes.

  24. Rank 126. Xiquet

    Spanish

A wood-fired hearth and a smoker do the heavy lifting in this fine dining room on the third floor of a Glover Park townhouse, where chef Danny Lledó builds a tasting menu around the food of Valencia. Rice cooked over the open fire is the gravitational center of the meal. The room holds only a handful of tables, and after dinner guests move to the lounge for coffee. It holds a Michelin star and AAA Five Diamonds.

  25. Rank 127. Locust

    Japanese

Reservations are scarce at this compact Japanese-influenced restaurant, and the walk-in line forms early. Chef Trevor Moran's menu is built around sharing plates with a precision that feels almost theatrical, from beef tartare hand rolls to rotating kakigori shaved into powdery, sculptural blocks. A Michelin star and a James Beard semifinalist nod signal the ambition; the laidback, buzzy room suggests nobody here is taking themselves too seriously.

  26. Penelope Wong's Park Hill lunch spot keeps limited hours, which only seems to sharpen the crowd's focus. The menu rotates around dumplings, wontons, and potstickers, with daily specials pulled from her Chinese and Thai background. Wong won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mountain, and the New York Times put this on its restaurant list, which for a weekday lunch counter is the kind of attention that makes Tuesday feel like a reservation you forgot to make.

  27. Rank 129. The Progress

    Modern American

A two-story room of wood, stone, and skylights on the Fillmore, this California-meets-Nordic restaurant is built around sharing plates bold enough to stop conversations mid-sentence. The Liberty Farms duck, arriving with a mountain of peanut fried rice, tends to get a round of applause from neighboring tables. The Progress holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination, and the martini has its own press clippings.

  28. Rank 130. kann

    Caribbean

Gregory Gourdet won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant here, which tells you the industry noticed what he was doing with Haitian cuisine long before most diners caught up. Kann is a full-service restaurant where dishes like griyo and legim carry the weight of actual culinary history, not just a concept. The cooking draws on French technique and deep Haitian roots, and the menu quietly teaches you something without ever making you feel like you're in a lecture.

  29. Rank 131. n/naka

    Modern Kaiseki

A single pasta course, spaghetti with abalone and black truffle, never rotates off Niki Nakayama's menu at this intimate kaiseki tasting room in Culver City. Everything else shifts with the seasons, moving through delicate broths and grilled Miyazaki wagyu in a long, unhurried procession. Getting a table is a project in itself, but Nakayama comes out at the end to say hello, which feels less like a formality and more like the point. It holds a Michelin star.

  30. Rank 132. March

    Mediterranean

The tasting menu here rotates through a single Mediterranean region at a time, from the Maghreb to Andalusia to Greece, so what you eat depends entirely on when you show up. It's a fine dining experience with a Michelin star and serious beverage program to match, starting with cocktails in the lounge before the main dining room takes over. The whole thing moves with a warmth that keeps the ambition from tipping into ceremony.

This lo-fi Balkan canteen in Webster Groves started as a food truck and kept the chaotic energy, with lines outside and regulars still debating what to order. Smoky kebabs, brown butter hummus, spectacular flatbreads. Chef Loryn Nalic holds a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest.

  32. The last building Mies van der Rohe ever designed now has a hotel on its lower floors, which is either a poetic ending or a very good address depending on your priorities. The Langham sits beside the Chicago River with travertine bathrooms, serious service, and afternoon tea if you want it. A Forbes Five Star and two Michelin Keys confirm the tier, though the river views from the upper rooms do most of the convincing on their own.

  33. Rank 135. COTE

    Korean

Cuts of USDA Prime, American Wagyu, and Japanese A5 hang in a visible aging room before they ever reach the grill built into your table. This is a Korean barbecue steakhouse in the Flatiron, dark and moody in the way that only feels intentional when the service is this precise. Staff do the grilling, which sounds like a gimmick until it isn't. Holds a Michelin star and ranks among the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants. The wine list is quietly serious about value.

  34. Rank 136. Press

    Californian

The wine list reads like a love letter to Napa, which is fitting given that Wine Enthusiast put Press in its Restaurant Hall of Fame. This Michelin-starred tasting room off Highway 29 has a soaring dining room anchored by a fireplace, warm wood, and the comfortable hush of people who have nowhere better to be. The kitchen keeps things precise and uncluttered, letting the ingredients carry the weight rather than saucing them into submission.

  35. A hand-lettered sign out front promises natural wines and a garden patio, which undersells things considerably. Inside this Bywater spot, a Michelin-starred contemporary tasting menu unfolds across a series of small, precise courses, each one built around sauces that do real work. The chef earned a James Beard nomination for Best Chef: South, and the room is intimate enough that you notice every detail they put on the plate.

  36. A contemporary tasting menu where Southern ingredients quietly take on Asian influences, course by course. The Michelin-starred kitchen on Peachtree threads regional produce through precise, inventive cooking, the kind where a two-chamber ravioli holds mushroom in one half and chestnut in the other. 37. Rank 139. Elske

    Nordic

A patio strung with soft light anchors this fine dining room on Randolph's restaurant row, where the menu runs Danish-inflected and quietly seasonal. The kitchen, holding a Michelin star, offers both a tasting menu and à la carte, so the commitment level is yours to choose. Anna Posey's desserts are compositions in the visual-arts sense, restrained and a little arresting. The kind of room where nobody seems to be performing.

  38. Post oak from nearby farms fuels the pits at this Fort Worth BBQ shop, open just a few days a week until the meat runs out, which it does. The young crew behind Goldee's earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed at number three on Texas Monthly's 50 Best BBQ Joints, so the line forms early and long. Black Angus brisket, cooked low and slow, is the draw; the sweet-tart mustard sauce alongside it is quietly non-negotiable.

  42. The multicourse tasting menu here shifts concept entirely depending on what the chef is currently obsessed with, whether that's a music era, a stretch of personal history, or something harder to name. 43. Exposed pipes, factory windows, and earthy ceramics inside Hotel Kabuki set a mood that Thai restaurants rarely bother with. Nari holds a Michelin star for chef Pim Techamuanvivit's California-ingredient-driven cooking, which runs through a sharply contemporary Thai lens. The family-style menu changes with the seasons, so the squid, the curries, and the banana leaf parcels shift, but the kitchen's intensity doesn't. If you can't get a table, the upstairs bar takes walk-ins.

  44. Rank 146. Casa Playa

    Coastal Mexican

The whole snapper arrives in tempura, trailing mole amarillo, and the room is already glam enough that this feels appropriate. Casa Playa is a coastal Mexican restaurant on the Strip where the menu works for sharing or not, which is a rarer courtesy than it sounds. The chef holds a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest. Order charred octopus, warm housemade tortillas, and whatever the table can agree on, then quietly order more.

  46. Rank 148. Indienne

    Modern Indian

Pani puris and chats arrive at a fine-dining pace in a River North room where rose-pink booths meet exposed warehouse ceilings. Chef Sujan Sarkar runs tasting menus, vegan through non-vegetarian, that read as modern Indian with a quiet French undertow. The food looks composed and architectural, then tastes warmly familiar. A Michelin star and a James Beard nomination confirm what the room full of very still, very attentive diners already suspected.

  47. Windowless, walk-in only, and usually packed, this South Philly izakaya earned a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic and a Michelin Bib Gourmand without ever taking a reservation. The menu roams confidently from raw to fried to grilled, cod skin crisped to a chip, chirashi bowls stacked with caviar and ikura. Regulars who know the right people find their way to the omakase counter tucked in the back, which is its own argument for becoming a regular.

  48. Rank 150. Bastion

    Southern

You pass through a cocktail bar to get to the dining room, which sets the tone. Bastion is a tasting-menu restaurant in Wedgewood-Houston built around contemporary Southern cooking that treats the region's pantry as a creative dare rather than a comfort blanket. The kitchen holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination, and earns both by keeping things loose enough that the whole thing still feels like a good night out.

  49. Rank 151. Ômo by Jônt

    Japanese-inflected French

Classic French technique run through a Japanese sensibility, with a few Florida ingredients slipped in quietly, is the organizing idea at this fine dining tasting menu restaurant in Winter Park. Chef Ryan Ratino's D.C. flagship, Jônt, is the spiritual blueprint, and the Michelin star followed. Three tasting menus scale from edited to full luxury, so the room draws both the occasion crowd and the regulars who already know which one to pick.

    Italian

Mozzarella pulled tableside from a cart is the opener, but at this Italian restaurant in Tampa it's the flavor that earns the attention, not the theater. The pastas are made in house, and the chef, a James Beard nominee, holds a Michelin star for work that feels both classically grounded and genuinely inventive. The room draws the kind of crowd that books early and orders confidently, and the chocolate custard at the end will make you reconsider skipping dessert.

The room divides in two: a buzzy front Tavern with bar seats and an à la carte menu, and a quieter Dining Room behind it running a prix-fixe. Both are fine dining by any sane measure, just at different volumes. The seasonal contemporary American menu leans on local produce with French technique behind it. Gramercy holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Danny Meyer's flagship, been around forever, and still the restaurant half of New York uses to impress the other half.

Sun Moon Studio is a tasting menu restaurant run entirely by Sarah Cooper and Alan Hsu, no brigade, just the two of them, and the Michelin star on the wall suggests that arrangement works out fine. The menu tracks California seasons closely, and Cooper's baked goods, including savory egg tarts and steamed brioche buns, earn particular attention. Reservations are a project.

  56. Rank 158. Kizaki

    Omakase Japanese

Toshi Kizaki built Denver's Japanese dining scene over four decades, and this intimate counter omakase is where he's raising his own bar. Around twenty courses move between small plates and nigiri he shapes himself, with Michelin's one-star stamp confirming what regulars already knew. The room is spare and dramatically lit, the pacing unhurried, and the sake pairings handled with care. This is a full-commitment dinner, not a drop-in.

  62. Getting a table here is a project, and yes, it's inside Disney's Grand Floridian, but set that aside. This is a fine dining room operating at a rarefied level, with Michelin and Forbes Five Star credentials to show for it. 65. The emcee chef narrating the caloric damage while urging you to order seconds tells you everything about the vibe here. The Kitchen is a tasting-menu experience where you're encouraged to wander into the open kitchen and chat up the cooks, which is either liberating or mildly chaotic depending on your disposition. The monthly menu leans hard on Central Valley produce. A Michelin star and AAA Five Diamonds, for a party this loud, is a genuinely entertaining trick.

  66. Rank 168. Ariete

    American-Cuban

Patio or dining room, the kitchen sends the same meal either way, which tells you something about how this Coconut Grove fine-dining room operates. Michael Beltran's French-inflected New American menu earns a Michelin star on the strength of sauces that feel like the actual point of each dish, with venison tartare and bone marrow sabayon as a case in point. Deep teal walls, hanging ferns, and paper lanterns turned a former strip club into a Southeast Asian street food restaurant that somehow feels like the right call even in a Minneapolis winter. The cocktails lean tropical, the menu ranges across Vietnam, Bali, and beyond, and the chef behind it all, Christina Nguyen, took the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest. Book on Resy; walk-ins are optimistic.

  68. Rank 170. Bell's

    French

A French bistro in a small Central Coast wine town, Bell's runs on a tight three-choices-per-course format that keeps the kitchen focused and the meal moving. Nearly everything on the plate was grown or raised within a short drive, which sounds like a bumper sticker until you taste it. The chef holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination, and the cooking earns both without fussing about it.

  72. Ten seats at a sleek counter on a cobblestoned West Village street, and the whole meal is in the chef's hands. Daisuke Nakazawa's omakase moves through a parade of nigiri, each piece built from deeply seasoned rice, a touch of wasabi, and a careful brush of nikiri. The fish skews fatty and tender in ways that tend to make regulars go quiet. One Michelin star, and a price point slightly more forgiving than the city's other serious sushi rooms.

  73. Rank 175. Chez Noir

    Elevated Mediterranean Bistro

The chefs live upstairs, which explains why this Craftsman-on-5th Avenue bistro feels less like a restaurant and more like a very good dinner party you somehow got invited to. The cooking leans Mediterranean with a California coast accent, prix fixe, and a Michelin star to its name. The canelés alone have sparked quiet obsession among regulars. A James Beard nominee, and the kind of place Carmel somehow earned.

Menus printed on pineapple-leaf paper set the tone at this intimate tasting counter in Nob Hill, where the team reimagines Filipino pantry staples through fermentation, foraging, and the kind of tweezered precision that signals a long night ahead (in the good way). It holds a Michelin star, and the James Beard committee has taken notice too.

  85. Rank 187. Bridges

    Globally inspired Bistro

Sam Lawrence's New American restaurant sits in Chinatown with amber lighting warm enough to make you forget how cold it is outside. The menu is spare on words and refuses to be pinned to a single tradition, which sounds like a hedge but plays out as confidence. Michelin has given it a star. 87. An eight-seat counter where the seafood flies in from Japan several times a week and the Santa Monica farmers market fills in the rest. This is omakase at its quietest: minimal room, soft-spoken service, no flourishes competing with the fish. 88. A long counter in a Scandi-spare RiNo room is where the tasting menu unfolds, the kitchen fully visible and conspicuously calm. 90. Rank 192. Gift Horse

    Korean Seafood

Shuckers at the horseshoe bar crack open oysters from a dozen Rhode Island spots, and you dress them yourself with kimchi mignonette or fermented green-chile hot sauce. Gift Horse is a Korean-inflected New England seafood restaurant, the kind of place that slides littlenecks under crisp kimchi and broils butterfish in sweet-potato miso. The chef won a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northeast in 2025, and the New York Times named two dishes among the best they ate all year.

  91. Rank 192. Musaafer

    Indian

A Michelin-starred Indian fine-dining restaurant inside the Galleria mall, which is either a joke or a statement, and Musaafer is clearly the latter. The grand hall, with its arches, towering windows, and labyrinthine layout, feels more like a palace than a food court neighbor. The menu traces the chef's journey across India's states, so the range is wide and the spicing is careful. The Paan Negroni at the bar is a fine place to start.

  92. Rank 194. Troubadour

    Californian Bistro

The bread course lands at multiple points during dinner, which tells you something about the team's priorities. By day, Troubadour is a bakery and sandwich shop run by two former SingleThread chefs who also operate nearby Quail and Condor. By night the same small room flips to a tasting menu of modern French-leaning California cooking. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the county's top restaurants, and the LA Times put it on their California 101 list.

    Contemporary American

Exposed brick and a vaulted dark-wood ceiling set the tone at this Michelin-starred fine dining room in downtown Marietta, where the menu is short by design and the cooking lets ingredients argue for themselves. The chef keeps things deceptively simple, which is harder than it looks. The wine list has real range. A James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast, this is the kind of place that makes Marietta a destination, not a detour.

  96. Rank 198. Dirt Candy

    Vegetarian American

Amanda Cohen has been making vegetables the whole point since before that was a thing anyone said, and her Lower East Side tasting menu is where that conviction lands hardest. One menu, no substitutions, seasonal produce pushed through pickling, raw preparations, and desserts that can't quite decide if they're sweet. A Michelin star and a James Beard nomination confirm the kitchen's seriousness, even when the food is having fun.

  97. The pale-pink landmark on Sunset Boulevard has been hiding celebrities in its private bungalows since forever, and that arrangement suits everyone just fine. It's a full-service luxury hotel with tropical gardens, a retro pool that looks like a film still, and guest rooms fitted in English furniture and marble baths. The Polo Lounge still runs on handshakes. Forbes Five Star, a Michelin 3 Keys, and a spot on the World's 50 Best Hotels list.

  98. Rank 200. Barley Swine

    Creative Southwestern

Barley Swine collects rainwater for its garden and plates the results on dishes sourced from Goodwill, which tells you roughly everything about where it sits on the spectrum between earnest and clever. It's a tasting-menu restaurant with a Michelin star, but the room runs genuinely casual, shorts-and-sneakers casual. The kitchen leans on local ingredients filtered through Mexican and Southern traditions, then takes them somewhere unexpected every season.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
